- Why did Lionel Trains produce an O gauge set of cars commemorating the American flag in 1989? While it WAS the 20th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which may have been the inspiration behind the #19518 car, I believe there was more to it because the flag itself was in the news in 1989.
This is the #6-19599 The Old Glory Series, an uncataloged offering from 1989. This set of three commemorative woodsided reefers comes in a specially-decorated outer box featuring lots of American flags and spelling out “The Old Glory Series”. Within this outer box, each car is encased within its own window box. Each car represents a significant historical event for the United States in the 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries, an historical quote, a flag of the era, and a graphic representation of the event.
So, if you are interested in some inexpensive, yet historically significant, woodsided reefers, keep you eye out for the Old Glory Series.

Awesome cars and thanks for the history Mike.
Thank you!
This is an outstanding video. It has the feel of a documentary.
Thank you!
Yes, swell video of the Lionel set. Thank you.
Mike, another outstanding video. Your inspirational words at the end of the video are what we all need especially now.
Thanks!
Nice to see what the cars look like, my set has never been opened lol.
I had never seen any of these out of the box. Had to open them!
I recently added a 1930s Flying Yankee to my collection.. It was a reflection of the new and VERY modern, futuristic if you will, progress in transportation design and metallurgy in the 1930s. there is a video of it on my channel. Nice to see some of these modern era commemorative cars. I have Lionel D-Day car someplace in the collection, was hoping to get it out in honor of the Memorial Day weekend.
I'll have to check that one out!
Excellent video, thank you for the history.
Thanks for watching!
Nice!
Thanks!
I enjoyed this video greatly.
Glad you enjoyed it
Before I go any further my compliments on your stirring conclusion to this video Mike! Very appropriate for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday.
Thanks for the story behind the "Old Glory" series! I've seen the cars pictured in various Lionel reference works but didn't know the whys and wherefores. Like yourself though I'm underwhelmed by the somewhat crude graphics compared to the "Spirit of '76" cars so haven't given any serious thought to purchasing any. MAYBE if I see any with a really good price I might reconsider.
Thanks for posting!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting set Mike but nothing I would be interested in owning. An enjoyable informative vid as always tho and a nice little tribute to the fallen as well. Have an enjoyable memorial day weekend my friend!
And also to you!
