    I agree with you Sam. If Hornby made all their models like this then they would not be in trouble, but some one obviously wants to squeeze every penny out of us. Budget Model Railways has a video on this issue if you want more detail

    I love your blood and custard coaches. And I do love the green one just a little better than the lined black. I do like that red lining on it though

    Hey mate. Thought I’d let you know that I bought one of these a couple of days ago and also a princess and a class16 diesel from rails of Sheffield. They’re really good. Helpful combo of your reviews planting seeds in my head and rails’ excellent service over the years, and I ended up having a Christmas splurge since it’s been a right crap year! Hope you have a wonderful Christmas nevertheless, and look forward to your Xmas present reviews!

      @@SamsTrains haha. Not at all! I had a right blow out. Hope you have a happy Christmas. I’m sure it’s tough in your area at the moment with these restriction. It’s times like this we realise playing with trains for a job is a bloody brilliant idea. Can work in total safety away from people. Still do what you love and still earn enough to bother doing it. I commend you my man. Watched for years as you know and really think you’re a top bloke and thanks for improving my collection with your brilliant reviews year in year out of all the models you do, it really is great mate. Hope you’re proud of how far you’ve come on. Your viewers prove that. So yh. Happy Christmas mate and here’s to another year of playing with trains!!! 🎉🎉

    Swapping out the motor for a K1 with flywheel makes a big difference to slow speed running and adds a bit of weight where it’s needed. Springing the front bogey/truck helps with pulling as it sits with better balance over the four driving wheels.

    I believe the reason they and many other classes became black with red lining was a money saving scheme introduced in the late 20s or early 30s. I've read that the few that remained green did so for hauling the royal train. Then from 1941 all classes of locomotive were painted black due to war conditions

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the info Chris - yeah that makes a lot of sense to me! Funnily enough, I expect that's why we see so many locos with those liveries in model form too!

    Good video Sam. Also, fun fact, the LNER B12s were actually stretched out versions of the D16's! The B12's designer, Stephen Holden, was actually the son of James Holden, who designed the Claud Hamiltons, according to the LNER Encyclopedia. And for the LNER Locos: LNER J94, LNER Peppercorn (A1/A2?) LNER A1 (Book Law I think), LNER B1, Q6, B12 and finally the D49. Also, I prefer the LNER apple green, because it's my favorite locomotive color, along with garter blue. It makes the engines stand out. Where I live I see black diesels all the time, it's nice to see engines with more color.

  • @jamestalbot4900
    @jamestalbot4900 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of my favourites, it’s easily the smoothest running loco I have. The pulling power is an issue for all my 4-coupled engines (D16, C1 and D11) except the Railroad D49, bizarrely. Tend to agree completely with the comments re:detail etc, but you can’t beat that price.

      Not a problem, I enjoy watching and really need to do something of my own!
      Locos were A1, Peppercorn A1, B12, B1 and J94. Are we doing odd one out? I’d say the Peppercorn if so.

  • @totalal4601
    @totalal4601 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with your comments on price, while the grey pound allows models to be sold with ultra detail and eye watering prices its not sustainable.
    The price barrier undoubtedly reduces new people entering the hobby which makes it more niche and more expensive. Some people claim "kids these days don't like modelling" which is utter rubbish, if Games Workshop gets young people building, painting and modelling why can't the train hobby appeal to them?
    Even the railroad range is far from 'pocket money' prices...

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Allan. I agree - the models are superb, but I very rarely feel that the prices are justified - let's hope they sort it out before they go out of business! If kids don't like modelling - it's because the prices are too prohibiting for them to give it a good go!

    Hi Sam, great video and a fab model. Curious though as I watched this video after your review of the LNER green version where you gave the performance 10/10. As this video is later is that a hindsight matter or was the green’s performance markedly different from the black? Just wondering generally as either way I think I still want one as everything else about the models are fab, and I really enjoy seeing your running sessions as part of your reviews too. Nick

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Nick! From 2018 onwards, I was much harsher on performance. As I've collected more models, I've learned more about what makes a good performer. Back in 2017 I was just blown away by the livery, (and the lack of traction tyres!) so I probably was a little too generous! But generally no - both versions run the same!

    I do like the Hamiltons, nice engines. A shame about the gear ratio, I'd think it makes more sense to have a high speed motor geared down for better torque at the wheels and more precise control. The motors ultimately fare better if they can run at a good speed with little load on them, very low rotation speed can be bad for them as well.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jonatan - me too, such lovely things! Yeah I prefer them to be like that too - but maybe space was a bit of a limitation on this one? I suppose it's possible there wasn't enough room for any more gearing?

    If I'm right, there were possibly seven other LNER engines on the track. I managed to name the B12, Flying Scotsman (?) and was it a K1 near the turntable? I can never remember the class of the Saddle Tank Engine or the 2-8-0 tender engine. Were there seven altogether? Your video displayed some of them so briefly, I couldn't count properly. So apologies for that. Not your fault, but I like the LNER apple-green liveried engines more than the black. You've done better with GWR engines, if I may say so.
