How To Upgrade Lionel's Mail Pickup Set - Cheap And Fun!
This is a new in the box Lionel Trains #6-12729 Operating Mail Pickup Set for O gauge. These were cataloged from 1988 to 1991, then again in 1995. They are reissues of the Lionel #161 Mail Pickup set that was cataloged from 1961 to 1963. Based on the graphics, I’d say this is the late 1980s version. While there is little difference between the 1960s and 1980s versions, the originals can fetch $100 or more in Excellent condition, while the reissues can be found new - like this one - for under $25. So, if you’re an operator, go for the newer version.

    And I bet you can fashion more “mailbags” so that you can do multiple transfers without stopping the train to retrieve the bag fro the train to do the transfer again….the kind of thing for your 3-d printer?

    I can't run my Menards Train from transformer because the new Menards caboose lights buzz and flicker at voltages lower than 18 volts. Do you have the same issue? - Thanks.

    • @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks
      @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Well, I don't have a Menards lighted caboose, so I don't know. That seems odd because many people who buy Menards trains use conventional transformers so the track voltage is usually more in the 10-12v range.

    You could mounted the magnet so the bag would have been attracted thru the boxcar door to the inside. Maybe have a workman inside

  • @modelrailpreservation
    @modelrailpreservation วันที่ผ่านมา

    A rare earth magnet could be mounted in the doorway of a boxcar so the bag gets loaded in the car, instead of magically levitating on the side. Either keep the door open, or perhaps some shielding inside the door when it is closed. I wonder if the shielding bags computer parts come in would work. Some just protect against static electricity but some also shield against magnetic power too. Better yet, a rare earth magnet mounted to the man that tosses the mail sack. Car picks mail bag up, drops it off elsewhere, just like a real train. I wanted one of these when I was a kid, but looking at them as an adult now, I would have hated it in the end. The mailbag stuck to the side would have bothered me back then.

    • @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks
      @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks 10 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      There was no Lionel MPC in 1988. Richard Kughn purchased Lionel's rights from general Mills in late 1986 and the name changed to Lionel Trains Inc. (LTI). As mentioned in the video, the accessory was cataloged from 1988-1991, and again in 1995.

    Neodymium Magnets, (also sold at HF), would do the trick I suppose. They are like10X or something stronger and a lot smaller. The ones at Harbor freight come in a white tube 10pc.s they're about 1/4 inch or 5/16 dia.

    I was wondering how this thing works, I got one in a tote of random o and o27 gauge stuff and couldn’t figure out how it worked. Although, the swinging mechanism is broken looking at spare parts photos. (Side note) someone should place the pairing magnet inside an explosive boxcar just for fun (mail hits speeding boxcar) (KABOING!)

    • @modelrailpreservation
      @modelrailpreservation วันที่ผ่านมา

      I like the way you think. Maybe replace the mailbag with a small Rambo figure or something doing a flying kick. Or maybe Chuck Norris. Figure swings on the pole, kicks the boxcar. Boxcar explodes.

    @Peckwesterlo1 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I'm hoping you'll find my comment on a video thats 4 years old. I built (mistakenly) 1 large loop (over 50' long) with multiple connections along the track id guess 16. There is really no way to block the loop now. Is there a way to phase a couple of transformers to run 1 loop?

    • @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks
      @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      No. That will just add more voltage which will destroy your motors and electronics. If you have enough feeders on your loop, one transformer should suffice unless your wire gauge is too small for the distance.

    • @Peckwesterlo1
      @Peckwesterlo1 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ToyTrainTipsAndTricks I ran 16 guage wire from transformer and continued it along the track. If I'm running an older engine with lighted passenger cars, when it at the outer limits of each loop. The engine slows way down and my overload light blinks. I'm using a CW-80 Transformer.

    • @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks
      @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Peckwesterlo1 For a 50 ft run 16 ga is a little light. There's a LOT of resistance over that length which is why you're getting an overload. A PW steamer and 3 lighted cars will pull 50 watts or so, therefore it doesn't take much resistance in the wire to put you over the top. A bigger (110w or more) transformer may prevent the overload, but you will still slow down at the far end.

    Thanks for the video...I really wish the factories would just include a simple switch for conventional/remote mode.....they can do it on some of the more expensive engines and they know many owners still like to run older conventional trains. I got my son a Strausburg set and it has been a hassle explaining to a 3 year old why Dads old trains and his newer train cant all run together.

    • @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks
      @ToyTrainTipsAndTricks 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The issue is the price point for having two different sets of electronics in the locomotive. In order to run straight conventional, they would need to have a reverse unit and all of the lighting and sound circuits would be more complicated and more expensive. With these changes, the Menards F unit would retail closer to $250.
