A NEW BIKE

  • This is a definitive moment in all my biking life. When you have changed your bike and then realise that your wife cannot stand riding pillion anymore, what do you do? Buy another one and have two?. The GS is my dream bike and I have had 4 of them over the years, also 2 RT's. The number of friends who are also finding that their partners do not enjoy riding GS pillion anymore is quite frightening...but everyone of course is getting older. So to keep touring with my wife I have had to do something drastic. Stand by to be shocked!

    Well, well, well, what a surprise Norman and totally unexpected! I thought you were going to reveal the BMW K1600, but i was wrong (again!) I was thinking of you last week when i was down at the BMW Skills garage (just calling in at Touratech) and wondered how you did on the course, now i know, well done. Looking forward to watching your adventure on the GW. I'll call in and let you sit on my GS soon!. All the best, Tim

      Hi Tim, yeh must admit the thought of a GoldWing never entered my head😵‍💫. I so enjoyed the BMW skills, even though it frightened me to death, I subscribed to Adventure Bike mag straight away and Ordinance Survey, checked out green lanes in the Peak. The editor of Adventure Bike Magazine was with me on the level 1 course, think it will be featured in their September mag. Just hope it doesn’t show a pic of me coming off, but we all did, many times🥵

  • @MillfieldWheels
    @MillfieldWheels ปีที่แล้ว

    Well Norm, you've done it again. I swapped the 1250GS recently for 1250RT and believe it or not the reason was too heavy and tall. I'm 74 and even with the extra weight of the RT it is easier to move around than the GS. I've literally arrived home on Monday after 11 days around France and the RT performed really well.
    Next video needs to be GL v RT.
    PS: I put the same Shad case on the RT and I'd put some thread lock on the 4 bolts that go through the red plastic parts on the top part of the rack.
    Keep safe.

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just so tight Millfield Wheels! I had made a mistake changing the RT for a GS. Only because I take Heather as pillion. Even then at 73 I was finding the GS do too heavy.
      So my solution is buy a Goldwing, light as a feather, I must be nuts🤣🤣

    Great choice Norm; arguably there's nothing more important than keeping an open line with the most important people in our lives! Not a moment too soon if you look at it from my recent perspective as I've been following your travels.
    I've given to taking my 76 year old mum on the Guzzi this year and the other week we had a little topple (vid on my channel).. Thankfully only broke a pillion footpeg, but the shame was truly palpable! She's still happy to get back on the horse because she's made of yesteryear stuff but it has had me looking at the (older) Wings on auto trader.
    As a side note, I did come across some talk about the DCT having faster wear issues on the clutch so I'm interested in your perspective as a gent thats au fait with taking stuff apart.

    The last thing I should do is go for a demo , I think me and the wife's heart to heart would be very different from yours mate! I remember trying an electric bike and one of the things I loved was no gears , especially after years of older bm's and trying to master the art of the seamless gear change. I just think the gears are a distraction and a hassle when you're changing all the time.

  • @normanmart7933
    @normanmart7933 ปีที่แล้ว

    Come on you inventors please come up with an aftermarket reverse gear, I think that would help so many riders. Once you know your pillion rider isn't comfortable , hence doesn't feel safe then if you want to share riding you've got to compromise. I think the only BM tourer with reverse is the 1600 so not a lot out there. Great bike , I'm sure you've got room for a green laning bike. Enjoy.

    The GS I have is a 2006 model, and I noticed in one of your previous videos that you had fitted LED indicators and a tail light. If you don't mind me asking, how did you wire it all up, did you buy leads or make them yourself? I have the indicators and the tail light, just not the leads.

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely keep your GS, it is an amazing bike. My 1250GS was the last bike ever for me and that was why I had every available extra from BMW, the £2000 916 design parts, which looked stunning and then I spent another £2000 at least on extras. Big mistake when it comes to part exchange. First the dealers do not want anything you put on, they virtually demand that you remove it. Hex ezCan, Innovv cameras, multitude of sockets etc etc. because they cannot offer a warranty when they sell. Gradually selling it through eBay. Then they only value it as a very normal bike. Nothing for the bling, black wire wheels, £1300 of Matt black luggage. What really hurt is that BMW said that no one wants a 1250GS now because they are all waiting for the 1300GS. If it had been a GSA then no problem as the 1300GSA is a year away and everyone wants a GSA anyway. But that is life eh. The GoldWing has to be my last bike so I will learn to love it one day like the GS. Heather says it is just the best bike I have ever had, so that makes it worth buying🤗.
      Greenlaning are tracks through our countryside that are identified on Ordinance Survey maps as permitted for vehicles/bikes. There are not many and hikers campaign to get them declassified for walking only. You can only ride on them with roadworthy, insured and taxed vehicles. Most bikers use lighter bikes like 250cc Hondas etc but you can go on them on GS’s.

    Which one is best to own?

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to be the 1250GS...but can you really tell the difference between each model?? Now the 1300GS is being released would it possibly justify a change from the 1250GS, I doubt it very much even though millions will do exactly that. BMW didn't even want to buy my one year old 1250GS bike back as they said everyone is waiting for the 1300GS. In some way I think I enjoyed the days when I had a humble 2005 1200GS. Travelled everywhere on it with no issues, but then when my son Jason rode his 2005 1200GS for 3 three years daily to work and one night it decided to blow itself to pieces I was too nervous to have a 2005-2007 GS after that. So a 1150GS really attracted me...but I could not reach the floor, whatever I tried really. Seat was wider in those days and if you have 29" inside leg you are left dangling!! Yep if money is not an issue you have to say go for the latest, which would be a 1300GS. But do not forget insurance as many companies will not insure a bike worth more than £20,000. What a problem the 3 of us had last year to get insurance. If you buy new then the insurance companies know the list price and trying the 'minute I ride it off the forecourt' line cuts no ice. We all eventually found insurance companies to take us on but had to fit data tool tracking systems! I have never had and accident, got a totally clean licence, have IAM certification and IAM Masters with Distinction but that made absolutely no difference at all.So by any GS built after 2007 according to budget and you will have a big smile on your face as you travel the world!!
