Header wrap will help a lot. Before you wrap them paint the headers with high temp header paint. Or, going to center dump block hugger headers if you can do center dumps. Also, another option would be to dent your headers where it is close to the plugs. Mark how the plug boot crosses/contacts the header with a sharpie. Lay a 3/4 impact socket on the header in the direction of the marks. Hit the socket to make "controlled" dents in the header to give clearance for the boots. It doesn't hurt exhaust flow at all. I've crammed small blocks in S10s several times and had to "mod" the headers a bit. Later man!!
I second that! Wrapping the Headers decreases engine compartment heat, increases performance & while your at it put some 90 deg boots on there too! your problems are solved!
Wrapping is bad news for a trail jeep. The wrapping will hold water and rust the header. And any mud will stain it. Jet Hot coating claims only 200 degrees emissions but I've never found anyone to back that up.
You could always just wrap that one area that its touching. I'm sure as far as staining, he wont be worried. That's why you run the engine to dry the wrap out. I wrapped the header pipe on my atv because it would get so hot. Even through my jeans I could feel it on my leg. No problems with it rotting out yet.
Glad to see more garage fab work again, that's really what I watch this channel for. Glad you got a break from working to have fun with your builds but wheeling vids just aren't for me. Watching you engineer solutions is awesome
Love how the comancheap is coming! Every tine I get my girlfriend to sit and watch your videos, she says you’re the Bob Ross of jeeping! I’d take it as a compliment
i had a similar issue, i made a custom set of wires using the boots that plug into the distributor (they were 1/4 the length) you can also get eyelets that just bolt the plug wire to the nut on the spark plug like you see on vintage cars, they make boots for them also.
Plug wires for the big block 8.1 (came in suburban 2500 from 01?-06 and a few other trucks) have a 45ish degree bend on the plug side. I use them with my headers on my 6.0.
You can either zip tie the spark plugs to reduce the amount of slack allowing the contact with the exhaust manifold or turn the spark plugs backwards to have the angled boot end near the exhaust to avoid contact.
Hey Matt for the those plug wires...I see unused bolt holes in the heads. Why not make some little sheet metal arms that bolt to the heads that would give you a place to zip tie the plug wires to, just enough to keep them off the headers? You could insulate the end of the arms if you're worried about shorting the wires to the arms. Just a thought.
You can get plug wire boots without any wire. And you can pull those boots right off if you're careful enough. Get a 60 degree and an 80 degree boot for those rear plugs. I've used straws to go thru the boot and then put the wire into the straw (with plenty of dielectric grease might I add) and that saved me from melting boots and wires on my manifold.
Header spark plugs are short and you can get some header wires that are 90 degree and shorter on the plug side then use some of your heat wrap on the headers and no more burnt plug wires. Had same issue with a s10 with a small block swap and a sidekick with a LS swap
You can make a aluminum heat shield that blocks the thermal convection path between the spark plugs and headers. Has worked for me in the past when nothing else did.
Header wrap, boot insulator and MSD has custom wire kits w/ angled boots. Hard to tell on the video but 90 looks like too much. Cool video!! I remember the first Comanche video, the meteor strike in the roof!
Matt, I swap c10s for a living and have also struggled with plug wire to header clearance. Untill I discovered Taylor wiring products 135 degree boots. Try them you won't be disappointed. I sent Jeremy a link. Be sure to order the correct length for your style coils.
I’m honestly looking forward to when I can build my second ranger that I bought just to sas. My first one was my grandpas and it will stay stock and clean but my second one I bought with the entire front clip being parted off for the fact I wanna v8 swap and also sas. I know this is a Jeep channel but I also have my wj but I want something that I can run 40s on and that’s a bit far of a stretch for a wj to handle. I’m either gonna go with a ford 302 with a Holley efi kit or for sake of cheapness use the Chevy 350 that’s in the top of my grandpas garage that’s already overbored to 400. And also you can make your own spark plug wires to to help with spacing. But having watched everything you’ve done I feel like I’ve learned a lot of what’s hopefully going to be useful tips and tricks to have an easier Time with my first major major more than just bolt on build
Here’s a thought with your headlights what about recessing them into the grill or making mounts on the bar So the grill would slip over or basically in front and then cut a slot for them to come threw the grill
I had major issues with plug boot melting on my '73 Charger. I solved it with a set of MSD 8.5 Super Conductor with silicone boots. The silicone boots are rated up to 600 degrees and the multi angle boots can be bent up to 90 degrees. Add those with the boot covers you already have and you will be golden. You'll need part # 32829.
@@bleepinjeep Now I remember why I didn't get those. I needed flexible boots and never measured the headers over 550 degrees. I figured 600 degrees boots and 1200 degrees cover would be fine. That was 2 years, 3k miles ago, & no issues.
Make small metal inserts cut out out of heat resistant or treated metal pipe for those fiberglass plug protector socks and insert the spark plug and the sock inside these short tubes this way it will act as a heat shield. You might want to use old spark plug ratchet ends as they fit over the end of the plugs anyway and then fit the sock over that....just might need to drill out the hole a little bigger for the wires to fit through them.
BleepinJeep shorty headers don’t give you any power gains over stock manifolds. You would have to go long tube headers to get an increase in performance over the factory manifolds.
It’s looking gooooood 👍 .....not sure about the air filter so close to the wheel, its going be sucking up everything the wheel throws at it , including water 🤔
It is surprising that they don't make a 45 degree boot for the spark plug wires. I seem to remember seeing them for other applications. BTW, you can heat up spots on the headers and dent them in quite a bit to get more clearance. Enginemasters did a dyno test on dented header tubes and they made almost no difference in HP. You could also go for much smaller header primary tubes, you don't have a race engine that needs that much flow anyway.
Like the rest of the frame, the shock hoop could be a mix of sheet and tube. Wouldn't hurt to have a splash shield for that intake either. Dual purpose?
Also wrap the header. Plumb the cooler so if it should spring a leak you can loop the hoses and you don’t need any other fittings. For the air filter you should one of those really cool snorkel. 😂
Just saw the new icon and diggin' it. I'm sure you already got this response but wrap your headers and then try everything you've done again. Or trade for a diesel...
With the intake, I was looking at it wondering if you could do a hummer-style snorkel and just run a 90 off the throttle body and connect it on the hood. Would that give more room under the hood?

In regards to your air filter issue turn the intake around to where the throttle body is facing the firewall and make an intake tube to go thru the firewall into the cowl and put your filter inside the cowl. Like the cowl snorkel kits and home brew version guys do to the xj. Now as far as burning thru plug wires I would wrap the headers with a good quality exhaust wrap not the fisher price stuff the local auto parts sells. An if you check summit racing I’m sure you can find either a set of build your own plug wires or set of Taylor or other quality brand plug wire setup.
