    Im going to agree with Jamie on the tea gadget. That is one of my pet peeves, "smart" gadgets that remove control and functionality. If i cant get a machine to automate the exact process i prefer, then it isnt smarter than doing it myself

    • @thomasjousse2427
      @thomasjousse2427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +219

      Yeah this machine is a big no-no if you're used to brewing your tea with loose leaves. The only thing you need ,really, is a kettle with temperature control, that's it.
      Edit : Well, the last kettle does the trick hey.

      I mean, I exchange the water whenever I make tea. And if I didn't I'd still have to pour and drink my tea... so all it does is save me three minutes. And for that and parts that are more prone to breaking I'm paying 80 additional pounds? No, thank you.

    • @amazingdrewH

      Yeah if you like tea enough to get that then you're probably not gonna like the lack of control involved

      It saved me from standing next to the kettle for just over a minute but in actuality I'm using that time to get stuff to pour the water into so really I've not saved any time anyway. I've got a kettle where I press a button to select the temperature and another to start it and that does me fine.

    • @XdivineExp
      @XdivineExp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I still think it's pretty handy. Like you fill it up before you leave for work, while you're coming home you set it to boil to whatever temperature you want and hold it. You get home and there's already hot water ready for you to make some tea. Or maybe you fill it up before bed, you wake up the next morning, "Hey Alexa, turn on kettle to 85 degrees". Get up and do your morning routine, bam, water is ready for you again.
      I don't think it's super useful in an "I need water right now" kind of situation, but it does seem quite nice in an "I'll need water in 5-10 minutes" kind of situation.

    In 5 years, what percentage of "smart" appliances will still have working apps that are supported by the company? That's the number one reason I shy away from the internet of things, you can rely on it to be temporary.

    • @lemmadogman4924
      @lemmadogman4924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Agree. I know a maker of one of those pet feeders - the kind that use a tag to only open for one pet - shut down during the pandemic. Their tech is designed so you can’t even replace the batteries in the tags when they die, you just have to buy a new tag. Now everyone has to throw their whole units out when the batteries inevitably die because it won’t work without the tags and they’re not being sold anymore.
      Edit: it’s petnet.

    • @moonmint8047

      Also, "old", non-smart kitchen appliances still work, obviously. Your Blender does not need an Internet connection, especially because those that do work, and might just be a few years old, are still great.

    • @aliciagates1
      @aliciagates1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I shy away because it seems everything is great for like a year or 2 and then they release a "new and improved" device and just drop the old one altogether. Then you either have to buy the new one, or deal with trying to use the old one when the app barely works anymore because they don't care about it anymore.

      That's why when I buy one of those (multifunction pressure cooker, kitchen robot) I need to be 100% sure that it can be used manually (in case of the cooker) or without the need for an app

It's way pricey, but it was a gift from my husband after I kept leaving my tea to oversteep in my mugs because we have two young kids, working FT from home due to COVID, etc. I'm a super taster (no coffee for me) so I'm serious about my tea and oversteeping (especially the more delicate teas) always made it too bitter from the tannins so I'd have to start brewing again. Now not only do I not have to worry about oversteeping, it makes 3 cups and I can go back for a refill.

    Being able to set the kettle for a specific temperature, have it hold it there, and tell me exactly (give or take) how much water is in it is pretty cool. Same with the countdown, especially here in the US where it takes about twice as long to boil water with an electric kettle.
    If it were priced 10-20% more than a similar quality regular kettle, I’d probably buy it, but it looks like it’s a £20 kettle with £70 of techy markup on top.

    One little flaw with that one size fits all lid: Note that the metal rim overshoots the smaller pans/pots, so it's essentially dangling directly above your heat source. Now imagine setting the lid down on anything meltable. A cutting board, even cooking utensils. Instantly melted. And there's risks of burning as well.

    To be really honest, to a busy person that lives alone, that kettle may be a blessing. Imagine yourself with your cellphone in the car, 5 minutes from home after a awful day of work and you just want a perfect cup of tea when you arrive. There is no one home to ask help to so you would have to waste a few minutes preparing it yourself. But with that kettle you may just program it to do it and by the time you arrive all you need to do is pour the water in the perfect temperature in your cup and put the teabag in it. I imagine it being as useful as a slowcooker. Just leave it to do its thing and by the time you're home you got whatever you want ready for you.

    I'm gonna assume that dish was "Char Siu/Siew Cheong Fun" (叉燒腸粉), for anyone curious :)
    If you wanna read it up, look for the base dish called "Chee Cheong Fun" (豬腸粉). Char Siew are commonly added as protein.

      You are correct, my dear! That dim sum was indeed char siu cheong fun. I've grown up knowing the base dish as just "cheong fun", which does have a slang name as well that roughly translated to "blank slate". Usually served with a bunch of condiments like mustard, chili sauce, peanut butter, soy sauce...

    An important note on the appkettle - anything that works via an App, you're taking a gamble that it'll still be working in a few years time. So many companies fold, or get bought by other companies who then decide not to put the resources into continuing the service. So unlike a kettle with a temperature knob, you may be paying more for something that you can't use not because something is broken, but simply because it's designed to work with a service that is no longer available.
    It's not quite the Juicero of kettles, but it's not far off.

    Time, temperature, and leaf to water ratio are the keys to great tea. Every tea and every pallette will vary for these.
