Did you look at their final income? Now what would have been super surprising if they made 60k and did this. Getting rich is not easy but high incomes are commonly associated with high overall wealth.

Grew up in Ethiopia, this was engrained in us from childhood. We did baby steps not knowing about it :) It should be taught, common sense, from childhood, and be part of the American culture.

We had reasons why we wanted to pay off the debt. It's working out just fine for us the way to decided to go. There's nothing wrong with somebody choosing to keep the debt and invest. We strongly believe it's all about doing what you think is best for you.
Couple with strong religions believe usually will end up fine. These are the example. Jesus Christ love us all. He will provide a good way for whoever believe in Him. Good job for this couple. Why would you say they are trying to undermine their accomplishment? Noting people are making hood incomes is not bad. Normally paying off debt requires an income higher than expenses which they are also implying. I just think they are not super impressed considering the income was also high!!! They made good incomes and could afford to pay their debts so it is not a surprise.
good lord... with my income the soonest I'd be able to pay that off is 14.5 years and that's if I only spent money on bills and essentials that entire time.

@Caligula Mortgage is actually considered a liability not an asset. Reason is, even if you turn around and sell your house for higher than you bought it, good chance you spent that much in repairs along the way. A rental property mortgage IS an asset because the tenants' rent usually pays for not only the mortgage AND repairs, but STILL puts money back into the property owner's pocket.
