The sounds aren't over exaggerated. I've shot a 30-06 and it is not only insanely loud, but has some pretty good kickback if you aren't expecting it. What IS over exaggerated are the explodability of cars.
When you said that these sounds are exaggerated; consider that at firing ranges you have to wear hearing protection, and soldiers get hearing damage in certain situations where guns discharge too close to their ears (remember Black Hawk Down, when Twombly is totally deafend for the entire battle by an M60 burst next to his head). The sound of a .44 Magnum is in the range of 140-150 decibels, which is louder than a rock concert or a jet engine, plus this is all coupled with the shockwave in the air, which games cant replicate, and the recoil in your hands. Firing a proper gun is a violent thing, far more than what 99% of games show.
Žiga Auer Most modern games try to replicate the "timbre" of the gunshot, but they totally fail to get the bass/sub-bass "thump" sensation, or the volume (most speakers aren't designed to go that loud anyway).
I like the loud guns, because anyone who has ever fired a 12 gauge shotgun in real-life without ear protection (which is stupid) KNOWS how loud a simple shotgun is.
Actually, the gun sounds aren't very over exaggerated at all. Real guns are loud as fuck, but in newer games they just sound like firecrackers. If you fired an AK-47 indoors, even if you missed the enemy, I guarantee the person would double over holding heir bleeding ears.
+TechLikeABoss They gave it an 8.6, and said "BLACK is everything you'd ever want in a shooter if all you ever wanted to do was shoot stuff. It's an extremely focused game that offers one of the most visceral gaming experiences you'll find anywhere. But, it offers little variation outside of blowing things up and its short length and lack of multiplayer will irk some people. No matter its faults, however, this is a game that everyone really should play through. After going through it ourselves, we can't help but think of the leaps that Criterion made with its Burnout series and are anxious to see if they'll carry over to BLACK as well. If nothing else, BLACK really, really makes us hunger for a sequel."
My nephew bought this from a carboot sale for a pound, and when he played it for the first time in my room i thought "eh it looks like just another first person shooter" and i stopped paying attention, then he fired the shotgun, and i dropped my laptop in terror.
When this game came out they were the best graphics of their time. I remember thinking how garbage call of duty was compared to this was back in the day
How to make the best FPS ever: 1. Get the shooting mechanics from black 2. Get the destruction mechanics from Red Faction 3. Put actual effort into making the game 4. Sit back and make all the money
This is true. I once shot a shotgun when I was 12; I was fucking half-deafened for a few seconds. Next time, had to wear headphones. Still fucking loud.
Anyone else want this on the Frostbite engine? Fire a shotgun, boom, buildings collapse, the ground splits open and the heavens tear asunder to reveal Super Jesus, then there's a huge boss fight.
aaron james Make it "ONE $BILLION-MAJILLIA-NMAGHE-BFKLS-HVFBV-SJBVAJKLSE-BVFAKLFNA-KLHEWBFAJ-KLBFAK-LBKLWB-FAKLE-FHBKLE-FH-BLKHEFBLJKE!" That's a lot of money.
As someone who has fired real guns, I can confirm that the pistol and shotgun sound more or less like ear-friendly versions of the real thing. Sadly, my experience does not extend to SMGs or rocket launchers, but I assume they're pretty accurate, too.
I remember playing this game fucking ages ago on my ps2, I remember it being absolutely fucking awesome, good to see I'm not the only one that thought it was the best fps game ever
Me too, i had a fucking blast playing this game, i don't know what made it good, is it the sounds? is it the destruction? is it the guns? is it the awesome gun battles? it's ALL OF THAT AND MORE!!!
Guard 1 hears a distant shotgun blast in the woods. "What was that?" Guard 2: Oh just the sound of a wild Nerd³ crashing through the forest. Guard 1: Should we investigate? Guard 2: No he'll be here soon enough. Guard 1: What ever you say.
Real guns are WAY louder than that. Also when people get shot in real life, they don't react much to it. They just slump over and die. If it's not a lethal shot, they don't move much but they do fall over after a little bit.
Black is the perfect blend of toning a gunshot down for a game and giving your shots weight. I can understand COD toning it down even further, their matches being so short and at times, frantic, but for Battlefield one, or Rainbow six siege, this kind of bullet weight would make certain parts feel much better
-_- It has more realism than Ghosts, besides, Ghosts is for 7 year old girls who use snipers as shotguns thinking they will make friends but in reality it just increases the strength of their virginity.
The second time he hummed the metal gear theme, I decided to put in on in the background on a loop... it made this video about 1.63 million times better :)
Game looks great in 4k on the Series X and all you have to do is insert your old disk. I love that Microsoft has decided to bring the games from the legendary PS2/Xbox era to current consoles. Hopefully Sony does the same sometime soon
Weird how games nowadays railroad you into action set-pieces but it just ends up being boring. COD bores me to tears. Forced cover? Set pieces? Guns that have no feel to them whatsoever? Yeah, loving this. There's more stuff happening on-screen - playing Black Ops for me felt like having an epileptic fit - but between being carted from place to place, nagged what to do at every turn, and regenerative health, it was just tedious. What made older shooters like Black, Timesplitters, Medal of Honor (original PS1/2 series), Half-Life etc great was they felt organic. Basically, there's a tonne of enemies with big guns, you have guns, we'll let you work it out. You're vastly outnumbered though so you'd best get to work quick if you want to survive. Hence why I loved Far Cry 3, it had that gorgeous organic sense that you were doing things for yourself - snipe stealthily in? Jump in sideways with machine guns? Ram-raid with a jeep? Your choice! I'll never forget when I first picked up the BAR in the very first Medal of Honor game on PS1. It sounded like God hammering nails into a bit of wood. Just beautiful! And the bazooka had great weight and heft. And seeing enemies scatter in all directions with all sorts of death animations was brilliant, even if by now they look like papier mache Playmobil figures as PS1 graphics haven't aged too well haha! Black was amazing as it genuinely felt like you were in an action movie, but not a scripted one like COD. It had that FUCK FUCK GOTTA SHOOT DUDES TO STAY ALIVE JESUS CHRIST feel that all good shooters must have at least once. And there's nothing more satisfying than being in a tight spot and organically working a way out - like a moment in FC3 when I was completely out of ammo and had to take down a general and his guards, so I nabbed a nearby jeep, ran all of his guards over, jumped out the jeep and stabbed him in one fell swoop. Awesome!
Team Bombersports apart from the awesome weapons I always felt it was very like a generic shooter. The original half life was always my go to for exhilarating fps action, on hard difficulty at least that was always a game where you could execute crazy sprints and ducks into cover to avoid gunfire and alien rays. Shame it relied so heavily on quick saving, however. Black at least forces you to stay alive or have to repeat the last 30 mins. Infuriating, yes, but good god pulling off some of those firefights without dying made you feel like stallone on steroids.
Ethan, why dont you calm down, breathe for a second, relax. Is the thing he is saying lies? No! Is the thing he said a straight insult to your family or dignity. No! So why do you have to attack like that. He didn't even said anything about pc, he just said that consoles are bad, and he has a point. And after that you started talking shit out of your ass, for no reason at all.
Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified has pretty good reactions to getting shot. The flinch in multiplayer is really noticeable, and in Hostiles mode and the Campaign mode after getting shot people will be on the ground for a bit writhing, or in some cases sort of immobile and flinching for a bit while standing up.
amnesiagrunt2356 When your vision flicks upward, that's the flinching. Other people in multiplayer do it too. You might just be playing it on the hardest difficulty only. Or trying to kill people with pistols. Pistols are useless.
Actually the gun sounds in this are way more realistic than those in cod or battlefield which sound like mice farting. It still doesn't have the right sound for the silencer tho
It's like the Bad Company 2 SP in a way. Completely dumb plot, but brutal sounding guns, great general sound design, similar music, destructible levels and varying mission structure.
Note to all FPS game developers, BRING BACK HEALTH PACKS none of this health regen shit and to hell with being realistic, and bring back excessive Blood and Gore.
+SharpHD The only good games to come from EA is Forza, need for speed and this ( I havn't played this though) The other games are just copy pasted. Did you know that Fifa 16 is the same as Fifa 10. OMG THATS AMAZING! No its no EA.
Mass Effect 1, 2 and, arguably, 3, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 1 and 2, Burnout Paradise, Battlefield 3, The Sims 1, 2, and 3, Kotor 1 and 2, Titanfall and several others have been published by EA. All are great games. And that's just off the top of my head.

"now you may be confused because that didn't sound like some sort of gentleman coughing in the middle of an opera house, that did, in fact, sound like Thor himself exploding" :D I just love how descriptive he is with the guns in this video
The most memorable experience with this game was tossing grenades through the windows in the second level. Literally blowing out the windows along with everything inside was amazing.
I’m rewatching this video because I’ve just read the chapter on Black in Dan’s book. I rented this game from Blockbuster with my older brother when I was in primary school. I don’t remember any of the plot, or any of the levels, but I remember that this game started my love affair with the SPAS 12 that carried on for multiple video game generations. Black and James Bond Nightfire are my favourite FPS games for the original Xbox.
This game was awesome. Fantastic sound design, semi-destructible envrionments, the somewhat unique collectibles (collect documents, destroy computers and safes) . Just awesome.
Going Orange (commando) may be the new Black (patrol, paramedic, fire brigade, coast guard and air rescue). But what about Ash Grey(stormtrooper), Tan(Paratrooper/Trooper), Yellow(personnel rescue and recovery), Iron Gray(quartermaster, munitions, logistics), Brown(bomb squad, waste disposal, hazmat), Scarlet(engineer/demolitions/thermophile), Red(Reconnaissance sniper sharpshooter), Green(marine), Blue(navy), Maroon(admiralty, specialist, distinguished soldier, veteran), Cyan (air force), White (officers, internal affairs, trainers, jailers, education), Monochrome(armoured corps, heavy artillery, tanks, iron man suits), Indigo(special forces), Violet (female only oceanine submariners), Pink(r and r, entertainment, morale, catering), Rouge(female only recon, scout and sniper support), Amber (voluntary auxiliary tradespersons), Turquoise/Aquamarine (techscomms, security hacker, drone operator), Pale Green (soldier of fortune, merc, criminal conscript), Golden (Intel spy) and Sallow (assassin). Phew! Great shooter, dual wield, responsive AI and varying enemy layouts, maybe a jogging feature and playable online, possibly all with Unreal Engine 4 I think this game would smash it.
my favourite nerdcubed video. i used to love this game but nobody ive ever met seems to know about it. sort of sad i watched it, i remembered it being better in every way than any other fps (like yourself) in every way, including graphics, which its not, but whatever.
The sounds aren't over exaggerated. I've shot a 30-06 and it is not only insanely loud, but has some pretty good kickback if you aren't expecting it. What IS over exaggerated are the explodability of cars.
***** That's what I meant, I just couldn't think of the word. It sounded weird to me too, but it works :P
***** Nah, more like it kicks you back.
+Brendan Risney The exaggeration is kind of the point aleast in baby panda sneezes
+Brendan Risney Have you seen a car explode before?
JadensBro Have you?
Although I do agree with you, he went deaf from an M240B if I remember correctly
Creepy pastas master Xl He was correcting a typo.
Žiga Auer Most modern games try to replicate the "timbre" of the gunshot, but they totally fail to get the bass/sub-bass "thump" sensation, or the volume (most speakers aren't designed to go that loud anyway).
Žiga Auer a jet engine is 220 decibels......... kinda why the personel needs to wear soundproof headsets instead of normal hearing protection........
So basically, guns are loud as fuck.
And so would you. You have to wear hearing protection for most guns even outdoors or your ears WILL be ringing after one shot.
It took me 20-30 minutes to get out of the starting room. I spent that time destroying the walls and furniture
if the guns in the game aren't giving your grand dad Vietnam flashbacks, they're pea shooters.
You're never too young to have a nam flashback
Knowing ign, they'd probably rate this game a 6.5/10 for "guns are too loud"
TechLikeABoss and they will probably say ea is better.

I was making a joke...never mind
They should make a sequal to this game, and call it Orange.
Then the reviewers can say "Orange is the New Black".
Genis.
Mirrors Edge to* grammar nazi hypocrite confirmed.
Mirrors Edge My comment was a joke a very bad one.
red is the new black
HD remake
the shotgun sounds like god sneezing
Jesus christ... This is giving Payday 2's sound assets a serious run for their money.
No grinding in Black...
BLACK WINS.
This original Xbox and PS2 game had levolution? *Battlefield 4 theme cues*
That is still the dumbest word ever made.
Games have been doing that for a while before Battlefield 4 anyways
lol I know
battlefield 3 campaign copied this game
My nephew bought this from a carboot sale for a pound, and when he played it for the first time in my room i thought "eh it looks like just another first person shooter" and i stopped paying attention, then he fired the shotgun, and i dropped my laptop in terror.

Dimpz or Call of Duty World at War, where you can properly decapitate people with a shotgun
Josh Reddy Rinse and Repeat
this game actually doesn't over exaggerate too much what a gun sounds like. guns a re LOUD. VERY LOUD. even silenced guns. they are still quite loud.
no duh man. videogames+watching youtube= nerdcubed. basic math.
yes but in all of the black ops games the guns sound like they have 3 silencers
don't forget ghosts and advanced warfare as well :P

Super Jesus would likely be riding a flying shark with laser attached to it.
He'd also be holding the world ransom for "ONE MILLION DOLLARS!"
aaron james Make it "ONE $BILLION-MAJILLIA-NMAGHE-BFKLS-HVFBV-SJBVAJKLSE-BVFAKLFNA-KLHEWBFAJ-KLBFAK-LBKLWB-FAKLE-FHBKLE-FH-BLKHEFBLJKE!" That's a lot of money.
The one million dollars was an austin powers reference, same as TheReal99PercentGamers's comment
Actually, not Super Jesus. RAPTOR JESUS.
The pistol sounds better than the .50 Cals in COD

***** Also you would be deafening your players. That's bad.
Finally someone understands.
I fell asleep on this playlist then just woke up to gunshots.
Tyler Peters 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I wish they would do a HD remake of this
i probably will if no one has by the time i learn how to make games

Mass Effect 1, 2 and, arguably, 3, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 1 and 2, Burnout Paradise, Battlefield 3, The Sims 1, 2, and 3, Kotor 1 and 2, Titanfall and several others have been published by EA. All are great games. And that's just off the top of my head.

I think you've got it backwards.
Ah, yes.
The EGGHNL rule: because Every Good Game Has Nine Levels.

"Nerd³ Plays... RACIST!
How is this in any way racist?
Joel Törnlund don't you get it oh my god...
Platinum Panda's No, I dont get it. How is black racist?
Joel Törnlund uh uh ya know what just....
Platinum Panda's You obviusly dont know what racism is.
The sounds aren't really exaggerated. They actually sound like this. Loud and brutal.
If you think FPS games are all about sound and effect go play arma
+Medic On The Move Cod isn't an fps anymore. it's an mlg simulator
FPS games are half sound effect, and Arma is really boring because it doesn't even have decent sound or gameplay lol.
He has just look up nerdcubed plays arma 2
IMO Arma is cool only with the sniper mods made by someone nicknamed QuickDagger :D
I think modern FPSs would be better if they had satisfying, somewhat overpowered weapons.
The guns sound cool and enemies flinch. Still don't see anything too impressive.
+ray ray No regenerative health, backtracking, destruction, explosives, stealth, shooting, etc.
+Zachary Johnson Something that alot of shooters have still. Still not seeing it.
+ray ray still the idea is that for its time it was kinda amazing to have that stuff
+Lee Sin True, true.
you are giving this game way too much credit.
no he is not
It's the best shooter in the universe, shut it
Brandon Johns
*Cough* Titanfall *Cough*
ECG 163 black is still better
i am epicness Nein.
"now you may be confused because that didn't sound like some sort of gentleman coughing in the middle of an opera house, that did, in fact, sound like Thor himself exploding" :D I just love how descriptive he is with the guns in this video
This is where Gears of War 4 got it's colour palette.
7mims in and Dan hums the MGS theme. Damn I love you Dan!
This guy reminds me why the ps2 was the king of gaming consoles.
Also this game is the fucking coolest FPS I've ever seen
Jesus I remember watching this as a kid😢
Nerd³ Completes - Black
Cut to a couple years later with Dan saying every game doesn't need to be open world.
*picks up spaz 12*
Dan: this is now my silesd wepen
me: more like your silensing weapen
Logan Wolfkamp silenced silencing
silenced weapon*
silencing weapon*
This plus red faction guerrilla building physics=the best damn game of all time.
It is now 7 years later. And this video is the exact reason I dropped money to buy a game from like 2005. And fuck do I not regret it at all.
This game was so advanced for it's time. I remember being blown away by the graphics.
This game was awesome. Fantastic sound design, semi-destructible envrionments, the somewhat unique collectibles (collect documents, destroy computers and safes) . Just awesome.
Going Orange (commando) may be the new Black (patrol, paramedic, fire brigade, coast guard and air rescue). But what about Ash Grey(stormtrooper), Tan(Paratrooper/Trooper), Yellow(personnel rescue and recovery), Iron Gray(quartermaster, munitions, logistics), Brown(bomb squad, waste disposal, hazmat), Scarlet(engineer/demolitions/thermophile), Red(Reconnaissance sniper sharpshooter), Green(marine), Blue(navy), Maroon(admiralty, specialist, distinguished soldier, veteran), Cyan (air force), White (officers, internal affairs, trainers, jailers, education), Monochrome(armoured corps, heavy artillery, tanks, iron man suits), Indigo(special forces), Violet (female only oceanine submariners), Pink(r and r, entertainment, morale, catering), Rouge(female only recon, scout and sniper support), Amber (voluntary auxiliary tradespersons), Turquoise/Aquamarine (techscomms, security hacker, drone operator), Pale Green (soldier of fortune, merc, criminal conscript), Golden (Intel spy) and Sallow (assassin). Phew!
Great shooter, dual wield, responsive AI and varying enemy layouts, maybe a jogging feature and playable online, possibly all with Unreal Engine 4 I think this game would smash it.
Is nobody gonna talk about the fact that these are really good graphics for like 2005
I still comeback to this video for fun, and to take notes.
Finally, a realistic Space Marine sim. Every gun sounds like it could slaughter a truck full of people
my favourite nerdcubed video. i used to love this game but nobody ive ever met seems to know about it. sort of sad i watched it, i remembered it being better in every way than any other fps (like yourself) in every way, including graphics, which its not, but whatever.
watching because it was mentioned in the division video
This is one of those games people have in mind when they say "Old games were so much better"
I watched this video when it came out and many times after that but I'm rewaching it because of the division video.
I loved this game and i still do. I don't know how but i played it again and Id remembered most things.
This channel is so awesome; my favorite musician does the outro music.
*nerdcubed sneezes* ... did he just fire a shot into the barrel fire? pewdiepie would be proud
