My grandfather and I played this when I was around 6 and I remember sitting there watching him play then I would come through and basically try to replicate what I saw. It honestly still holds up. My biggest issue with the game was the blur on the reload and you can get around that but hitting the top button right after you press reload. (Y or Triangle)

This game is a pure cinema fps, everything done for rule of cool. Its fucking rad. I actually dont mind the DoF effects on the reload to give them emphasis. Also, that Gulag part from Call of Duty was actually the bathroom part from The Rock
Hilarious enough, I found immediately pressing the X (Xbox controller) button during reload gets rid of the depth of field. My friend I was playing with was so thankful for me finding that out.
its interesting you mention "airsoft course" in this video. a lot of the weapons are just models of airsoft guns. this was such a great game. an absolute classic. they dont make them like this anymore
Thats most shooters though. They model after airsoft guns cause A: its easier to get a hold of one, as well as guns generally not being legal in most places, and B: its to avoid copyright issues
@@MrMegaMetroid There isn't really any copyright issue: the intellectual property issues with using firearms are mostly trademark issues related to their names, with the only ones related to designs, IIRC, being issues of HK having a trademarked logo which included the outline of an MP5 and Glock having one with a Glock 17, which some games companies worried might mean they could argue trademark infringement for depicting those weapons in games. Mostly it's just because a lot of FPS devs are into Airsoft, and aren't aware of which the signs are that something is an airsoft gun rather than a real one.
I can pass along a fun development story related to this; the police were called on the Criterion office once, because passers-by saw people running around chasing others with assault rifles and shotguns through the window. Heard that from an ex-Criterion dev I worked with
This game was the best at the time and has honestly soured me towards most FPS games after it. The thoroughly destructible environments should have become an industry staple, but outside of indie titles, no one is willing to downgrade graphics in exchange for processing power.
I found this game at a yard sale when I was a kid and played the shit out of it. I used to replay the highway mission over and over to reenact the street shootout sequence from Heat with Val Kilmer and Al Pacino. Such a fun game from simpler times.
One of my favorite guilty pleasures of gaming. LOVED the bridge level. It's so campy, goofy, over-the-top, and everything else taken to a level that's so fun. I always found it weird (yet, fun) though, that it technically takes only 3-4 AK rounds to take out an enemy soldier, but you can spend an entire 60 round mag on just one due to the "hit" animation/detection cooling down
I remember this game feeling very fresh to me when I played it as a kid. I really enjoyed it back then because it had a pretty unique feel/style compared to other shooters before it. Great memories :)

I used to play the game with my dad for hours when I was 11. We spent evenings and nights playing the game. This is one of my absolute favorite FPS! Pure nostalgia, I hope the game gets a comeback on PC or PS-4/5. Good old days, the best FPS for the PlayStation 2...especially the gun/explosion sounds of the grenades and the RPG are just epic. Since I haven't been in contact with my father for 2 years, "the background isn't that important", I bought a used PS-2 in very good condition and the game was in black condition, new and in the original packaging, and I play almost every evening. I just love this game. Especially the DC-3 Elite pistol that you have available for the 1st mission is a very, very good pistol...2 to 3 shots and the enemy is dead, it's similar to the Desert Eagle and the Beretta M9 and the sound from the DC- 3 Elite is awesome.
I remember this when I was like 14. Im 32 now and the game still looks decent. It was right up there with halo, fable and morrowind in my regular gaming rotation.
I never managed to complete this game on PlayStation 2 and when I bought it on Xbox 360 a few years ago I really enjoyed it,it was beautiful for those times and very well made, one thing i always loved was the realistic that when you get close to a wall or any object the weapon gets closer for obvious reasons

This game is so proud of it's gun models that it literally has a depth of field every time you reload but then has the receiver on all the guns flip to the wrong side.
Maybe hes a lefty lol
yep, that always bothered me but still great fucking game..
You can tell they wanted high visibility for those flying rounds. I say it was worth it considering games that look like this were still a novelty. Yeah, you wouldn't normally want them pumping out in your face, but for our visual appreciation on a PS2 game? P damn good.
The deliberately put them on the left side to show off the detail of the rounds getting chambered and casings getting ejected.
I think it was to avoid copyright claims because they had tested real firearms when developing the game.
It's impressive how much post processing the PS2 could throw on screen, lots of transparency textures on top of one another , light shafts , blur , bloom , it requires a shit ton of layers do to that and a high bandwidth fill rate, these effects were really fancy back at the day
I would say it's more due to the devs and environment at the time. The profit motive to rush games out the door and trinkle out content is just too good for shareholders these days.

I just played it for the first time list month. Had a better time than all of Cold War.
I never played Black but my buddy always talked it up and showed it to me every now and then. so I can't say exactly how good this game is but being better than a modern cod campaign is a pretty low bar to pass lol.
I believe it. 6th gen in many ways is the golden era of FPS and many genres in general cause Timesplitters is still my favorite fps series even compared to stuff like Far Cry 3 and up

its interesting you mention "airsoft course" in this video. a lot of the weapons are just models of airsoft guns. this was such a great game. an absolute classic. they dont make them like this anymore
Thats most shooters though. They model after airsoft guns cause A: its easier to get a hold of one, as well as guns generally not being legal in most places, and B: its to avoid copyright issues
I'm glad they don't make em like this anymore. These games are a dime a dozen, made to pander to white dude bros gun nuts.
@@MrMegaMetroid
There isn't really any copyright issue: the intellectual property issues with using firearms are mostly trademark issues related to their names, with the only ones related to designs, IIRC, being issues of HK having a trademarked logo which included the outline of an MP5 and Glock having one with a Glock 17, which some games companies worried might mean they could argue trademark infringement for depicting those weapons in games. Mostly it's just because a lot of FPS devs are into Airsoft, and aren't aware of which the signs are that something is an airsoft gun rather than a real one.
@@CruelestChris thats very informative, thanks man✌️
