- I got a ton of comments from people asking me how they can have a Tesla if they live in an apartment. What's worse is if you live in an apartment and there's no superchargers nearby! What do you do?

It's so funny you posted this now. I took delivery on my Model Y yesterday and I live in an apartment! 🤗
Haha perfect timing!
Me too got mine today and live in an apartment
Why don't y'all wait until you buy a house or move to an apartment with a garage💀...seems stressful
3 months later, how is it? i drive like 30-50 miles a day. supercharger is about 30 miles away, no other charging in my area
@@justabrokeredneckLoving it. We have a charger (level 2) at my apartment so I'm able to charge while I work at home (plug it in at the start of my day and it's done by lunch time). I drive about the same as you (30 or so miles a day) so I end up needing to plug in twice a week or so. If you're not sure about your situation, I would suggest renting one for a couple of days and trying it out to see how it would work with where you are. That was what convinced me I could make the switch to an EV.
I got my 2023 model Y performance 6 months ago now and it's been fantastic. I rent and the nearest supercharger is 12 mins away and I charge once a week during off peak hours and its cost me $10. Best car I've owned it's insanely fast and comfortable.
2022 MYP owner here, agree on all counts!
Have you noticed degradation with only Supercharging?
@@tonyfrese6903 I haven’t noticed any and I don’t baby the car. I drive it like a normal ice car. The range is kinda bad in the winter. I’m getting 130 miles per charge and a charge now costs me $15.
I have been driving EV’s for more than 7 years and 6 of them was with me living in an apartment.
My tips would be:
1. If possible get an appartement with a public charger nearby.
2. If you take a trip try to charge at the destination by looking for a public charger nearby where you need to be, more often than not you will charge more then you need to get home.
3. In my country in Europe we can ask for operators to install public chargers near our homes, maybe this can be done in the US as well?
4. Compare charging prices of different operators, it can save you a lot of money.
5. If possible ask for your employer if you can charge your car while you work (if they have an outlet nearby) even at just 2 or 3kW, 8h of worktime can add up.
Good tips!
My tips would be:
1. Get a hybrid...
I live in a 900 unit apartment complex that doesn't provide EV charging, yet I've seen more residents with Teslas, so I always wondered how inconvenience it was not to have a charger at home. But there are several supercharging stations in the area, including one that's just down the street, so figure that's where they go.
This is very helpful. I was wondering about my mobile charger not being long enough and it says online that they don't work with extension cords. It's good to know there are some extension cords that do work with it. I currently live in an apartment and its certainly more tricky than having a charger at home.
Also adjust driving according to the little white progression bar-keeping it low or green (regen)
Good stuff Chris! Thanks!
Great video, so comprehensive and well edited! Yeah I have to keep MYP in Sport, I put it in chill and tried and it was a lot slower than I am used to. #neveragain
The fact that this guy purposely ran his battery down to %0 tells me that degradation is not a huge concern for him. Constantly SuperChargering too.
Either way, good info on this video
Facts. Thanks
Thanks for the info! A wireless wash video would be helpful.
I took delivery of my Model 3 a month and a half ago. I live in an apartment in the Los Angeles area. Luckily, in my home area, I have 2 Tesla Superchargers near me. And 4 on my work route. One more on the way that has been built but isn’t online yet, down the street from work! On top of that, there is a “Flo Charger about a 10 minute walk from where I work, and this isn’t much of a problem because I like to walk on my breaks from work anyways. There is a city free charger on our street, but many EV’s share that, and there is a first come first serve system, with everyone there agreeing to “2 hours,” however I don’t like dealing with the people, though so far they seem to be lovely. I’m extremely lucky, and yes, this is one of the reasons why I decided to pull the trigger on getting my Model 3! Good luck to anyone considering or taking delivery of a Tesla. I personally say, do your research on your personal situation. Take into consideration your routes, and daily driving habits, and you will be fine! Sorry for the long comment, and I just thought about it, I charge about every 2-3 days. I have a 2021 Model 3 Standard Range Plus!
yeah, I never heard of 3rd party cam. I need this!
getting my model 3 delivered in 3 days. Not planning to install the NEMA for the time being since I want to max out super charger while it's free for 6month.
I live in the Northeast. The temperatures are sometimes as low as -12ºF. I will run the heat. However, I do make sure that I have sufficient charge and will run the heat as necessary. I had a different electric car last winter and was able to run the heat on the coldest of days. Having the heated seats and steering wheel was helpful, but my breath would fog up the windows unless the heat was on. With the heated seats and heated steering wheel, I would sometimes get too cold. Also, I made sure the battery was preconditioned when leaving in the morning and leaving work in the afternoon.
Good job!
Not being able to charge at home is 100% a deal breaker for any EV IMO. The extension cord you listed is for "15A, 125V, 1875 WATTS", these cords are not for 100% duty usage. The Tesla charger will pull 1800 watts a 100% duty cycle, that is just asking for trouble..
We are so lucky to have so many options in So Cal,i can charge at home, and haven't had to use a 3rd party charger, plus Tesla just opened a 14 stall station less than a mile from me behind a Polly's Yes a slice of pie , while i wait if i need a fast charge. Thanks Elon, and a Like to you Chris appreciate all the info
The Chargepoints I've used stop charging when unplugged- not if sure if it depends on location.
My cousin lives in Washington and tried the extension cord idea but outdoor outlets weren’t available for him to charge. He then ran it from his apartment and was told to stop because of it creating a “trip hazard” and a “fire hazard” because he had to run the cord out his windows and over a sidewalk. It also ended up passing by other tenants windows, which didn’t make them happy either. I’d make sure you check with management or the landlord prior to just running an extension cord, he ended up having to move
Yeah! They don’t like it so do it late at night and lower your amps in the car so you don’t trip anything
@@EverydayChris oh, the “trip hazard” wasn’t relating to the amperage, it was relating to someone tripping over the extension cord and suing the company that owns the property.
The biggest tip in the entire video was glossed over somewhat. Not driving too fast. Air drag is the number one drain on the battery for most people (unless they never drive on a highway). Keep it below 70mph if you really want to maximize range or save battery. That being said, don't drive slower than the flow of traffic, that's dangerous.
Yup!
Thank you, just got my model y, I live in an Apartment 🙃🙃🙃💙💙💙
The Tesal Gen 3 Wall Connectors can collect payment now for NACS and J1772. If I lived in an apartment complex I would make them aware that they can profit from providing Tesla Wall Connectors. If the Chargepoint handle is broken just lift that lever and it will start charging. People break them off because it won't start charging if the lever doesn't lift enough on the thumb end when you plug it in
I'm planning on getting the Highland. I live in an apartment and there are 2 superchargers on Staten Island.
Nice!
Another way to conserve battery, but want to have cabin overheat protection on, is to get a sunshade.
Not just apartment charging. Renting electric cars from Hertz. A new driver is not giving a lesson on charging. They should include the CCS charger. My coworker was put off on electric cars after renting one in Florida Miami.
Nice you posted this while I was deciding if it was worth it to get a Tesla. Live in a town home and don’t want to get bitched at by HOA 😒 luckily my super charger is at a mall so I can just get some food there and chill for a bit.
Nice!
I’m pretty sure Oahu isn’t “The Big Island”. That would be the island of Hawaii (furthest east).
your videos are so good
no you're so good
I'm sure you're potentially making a video about it... But could you make a video discussing the recall and your thoughts about that?
Chris I live in a apartment with open parking with a model s , I cover up my car to not use sentry mode while parked outside what else can I do any recommendations
Personally I'm anti charge lock on the 1772 adapter simply because if someone wants to unplug the car, I'll let them do it so they feel like they won something instead of breaking the charge port or hitting the car.
Have you ever used a NEMA 5-15P to to at 110V ? I hoping this extension cord type on Amazon and was wondering if it would get you the faster charge since your using the NEMA 5 15 only different is the NEMA 5 15 is an extension cord with 110v on the other end that plugs into the normal house charger.
you know a lot about tesla's. I got my 2023 Tesla model S plaid. do I need TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM? that's sold on Tesla site. I thought the wheels came with them already installed.
Dam 2 hours I have nothing to complain about. I have personally had to wait till 12 am to get incentives, only charger that close to me is FLO. For 8 hours I only pay $8 but if I use a supercharger it charge me $21 for a model x for if it on 20 % to 80% charge. I stick with FLO I just have to walk 10 min to my house. The Downfall is the winter it stuff here in nyc.
Wow I wonder why in the heck anyone would go through all this b.s. thankful for my dino driver.
Chris: “Turn on chill mode”
Me:🤮🤮🤮
if you don't travel or commute that much , level 1 is more than enough for daily charge . plug it at 8 pm and it will be fully charged at 5 am next morning .
Holy cow. Sounds like a pain in the butt. I'm sticking with hybrid for now.
LOL I live right next to that whole foods! I charge up there from time to time
Wouldn't recommend Irvine Company apartments to anybody who has a Tesla in Orange County. They recently raised their ChargePoint prices and made it as expensive as Supercharging. You can probably find other apartments with better EV charging prices.
My cousin has a 2023 tesla model y here in dubai and ge says he charges his tesla when ever he sees a charger at the mall he usually spends around 2-3 hours at the mall and he used those time to charge the car
Tesla's dragging their feet on the CCS retrofit for early Model 3/Y. Every time it reaches the given time they say to check back, they push back another several months and just continue to kick the can down the road. It's annoying for those of us that want the official retrofit, but I ready to just settle for the "hack" with the 'bundle of wires'.
I live in Hawaii and would not own a tesla if I didn't have a house with a level 2 charger. Most of the level 3 chargers are limited to one or two station and are always taken.
That's Oahu not Big Island, but all good bro, Aloha 😄🤙
My bad! Aloha!!
The supercharger you zoomed in on the map is Oahu not the big island
btw, the island that you showed that had the one super charger is on O'ahu, not the big island lol
but it's big and it's an island
Just no
Can you charge a Tesla with a gas generator or camping battery?
I lives in an apartment too and I just charge my M3 downtown for free overnight. It’s only 5 minutes away riding an electric scooter. So basically free “gas”.
0:20 Killed me for some reason 😂
0:41 That map is NOT the Big Island. That is Oahu, where Honolulu is.
It would be too time consuming for me. If I couldn’t charge at home I’d get an ICE vehicle.
Would definitely like to see the 3rd party dashcam video.
I live in an apartment without a WiFi connection to install updates. Any tips for me?
I got quoted $6200 to install in my condo so this is timely as I am questioning a potential purchase in the next year or so
To install a normal outdoor power point?
Hey Chris, how about supercharging once a week?! Will that cause any battery degradation?
Nope! That shouldn't be an issue
Can you also make a video on using a portable battery + Tesla mobile charger to charge the car in case of emergency
will do!
just moved to Pearl Harbor and was thinking about getting an EV
Hey bro, I’m in a similar situation. I can’t charge at home just yet. However I have convenient Supercharger 2.3 miles from me. My question is this normal, I lost 3% overnight. Parked at night around 11:32 pm 79% and this morning 6:50am 6:45a. Per your suggestion cabin overheat off, sentry off as well. Is they lost normal or abnormal man?
wow 3% is kind of alot. Go to the secret service menu for any active alerts. Then 2 finger reset your car. See if that fixes it
@EverydayChris yeah, I thought so to! 😧 thanks, man. I'll try that and update you. Oh lol how do I get into that menu?
@tonymiles89 software, hold the logo, password is service and you’re in!
Which tire inflator do you recommend?
geni.us/2W7AAkZ
Thank God i passed my high school, so much of algebra & physic skills required !!! 😂
Nice that SuperChargers are all over!
Yeah! We blessed!
Palmeras!
wow you're crazy hahaha
Bro you leaving in irvine?
that wasn't that the Big Island what was Oahu but yes the struggle is real
Yeah :X
Lol yup. Other islands of Hawaii have it worse with no supercharger
First go rent an apartment then go buy a Tesla lol. Charging it is not that hard now. I remember when I got my 2018 Model 3 and my charging station at home was not install yet I had to drive a few miles to get charging after work and when I got home I waste a few miles already. Now there are 2 charging stations within a mile or 2 from where I live.
Amen!
BTW, Oahu is not the big island.
Had a model s and lived in an apartment for 7 years. Its doable but not convenient.
Oi! The map and review was of Oahu not Big Island 🤙🏽
Honolulu is not on the big island…
My apt does not have a charger, my boss is so cheap, he refuses to turn charger on-wtf ?. I have to drive to FREE TYPE 2 charger. I have to sit in car for 4-6 hours while car charges. Once a week-in the cold or pay at a supercharger
Seems like an opportunity for smart small businesses in the area
For real. Gimme that damn Snickers.
I ate it after.. hadn't had snickers in years..best treat ever
😩
Did everyday Jan kick you out of the house? Why you living in the apartment? Just a curious long time subscriber. 😊
She's stuck with me :)
Here is a challenge/potential next video topic...how do I update my Tesla when living in apartments and cannot connect to home wifi? Currently trying to figure this out...I only have 10MB in wifi tethering per month, so not sure what to do.
@jastinhaha2 was gonna say hot spot or go to a Starbucks and try to get free WiFi haha
@@jastinhaha2 I get updates at Tesla Service Centers, using their wifi. Can go after hours and park next to the building. Car auto connects.
hahaha gotta love irvine
I thought everyone there has solar power 🔋
What do yo mean I can't roll down my window 😔 how else are everyone gonna see that I own an EV too save the environment smh
Jk yeah rolling down the window would definitely mess up the aero, and deplete the range tremendously. Tried it once on my Leaf and was not impressed 🤣 Though I feel a lot cooler so it balances out in the end.
Mentions the Big Island, and then zeros in on a map of Oahu. SMH.
From a distance looked like Jeremy lin.
get a charger for home
dont get an ev if you dont have a 240v plug
Bruh im too poor why the fk am i watching this?
Dreams can become reality
Hue I love that odesza song
I live in Apartment (6 EV Level 2 installed "always FULL") for the past 14 years 9 months driving EV for the past 9 years 9 months (Tesla for past 6 years 10 months).
Charging Station Apps:
For Tesla Drivers
1. Tesla App
2. Plugshare
3. Chargepoint (J1172/CCS compatible Tesla)
4. EVGO (Some have Tesla plug)
5. Electrify America (CCS compatible Tesla)
Non Tesla EV Drivers (CCS)
1. The App that connects to Vehicle
2. Plugshare
3. Chargepoint
4. EVGO
5. Electrify America
You forgot Volta, it’s the best for 2 hrs free.
@@Believer1995ofGodyes but the problem is most of the time at least in my area every time I visit a Volta station, all stalls is occupied!
@@Teslaalmosh yea they get taken quickly lol but I’ve been lucky enough to snag the spot a few times and it’s been great. The Volta app is also decent at letting you know the status of chargers.
LOL the middle class are not supposed to be in a Tesla let alone thinking they are human beings
This is way to much man
If you live in a apt/condo, have kids, good luck having an EV and juggling time and schedule commitments.
Ok so just straight up don’t use my Tesla to get the most range…. Got it 😑
Do you think using the super charger will degrade my battery faster if I charge it twice a week? I am currently charging it from 20% to 80%. Thank you.
You should be fine!
