  • The Prodesk and Elitedesk G1 USDT or Ultra Small Desktop is an interesting little PC form factor that I haven't really seen in office type PCs for many years. Thought I would make a video as a holdover until I can finish the OptiPlex case mod.

    I think about elitedesks and prodesks here and there, but really, I mainly think about .....chairdesks.

    Thanks for the shout out! For the G1 600 and 800 SFF, there were only a few differences that I can see. The 600 had 1 x16 and 3 x1 PCIe slots, and the 800 had 1 x16, 2 x1, and 1 x16 wired as x4. So the 800's could hold two graphics cards. They also ran different chip sets, and I think the 600 didn't have a DB9 serial port standard. I've not dived into the G2, but when you get to G3 there are actual size differences. I hope to get that video out soon! Great find on that form factor BTW! Long live chair desk!

      Another difference between the ProDesk and EliteDesk was vPro, which is basically a hardware IPMI/BMC. That's how they upsold enterprise customers on the EliteDesk.

      Nice, sounds like the 800 would be a better choice for running a GPU along with a PCIe SSD adapter then. Anyway I look forward to the next vid, whatever it is! 🪑

    Enjoying your videos. New ones are often the first I watch in a batch. I do have a suggestion on "modernizing" your environment: You need another ChairDesk. Put one ChairDesk on the seat of another. Boom! You've created a standing ChairDesk. The ultimate in modern workspaces! Add/remove the upper (or lower) ChairDesk for adjustability.

    Ever since this video dropped, the price of USCD's have gone up. Makes it hard for us fellow chair desk enthusiasts to get a good deal on the used market...

      😂To be fair, Chair Desks are an invaluable resource. It is a surprise anyone would be willing to sell one at all! 🪑

    I use a HP Pro Desk 800 G2 as a HTPC ... but only can find Elite Desk 800 G2s when I search for specs/info ... guess they're the same .. only diff I see picture wise was the Elite Desk had an optical drive

    I scored a free chair from a Starbucks that closed down by my old work; like real, solid wood. It has like these butt indentations in an attempt to make a solid block of wood more comfortable for a butt. Think it would be an okay candidate for a chairdesk conversion or should a proper CD also fold?

    • @LowcastleTech
      @LowcastleTech  ปีที่แล้ว

      😄That is an excellent question! And perhaps a philosophical one as well. If I were to speculate, I do believe it could qualify as an official Chair Desk. While being able to fold is one of the many incredible qualities of Chair Desk, I wouldn't say it is an absolute necessity!

    I don't think Dell or Lenovo have a similar size, so good on HP for making the form factor.

    • @chazbotic

      they do, however dell calls then the USFF and the micro desktop respectively. unlike HP, the dell USFF typically has an internal FlexAT-esque "micro-FlexAT" power supply since the mini-ITX standard doesn't define a PSU form factor. it also usually uses low profile, standard memory modules (rather than small-outline memory). the HP does offer better heat management though and typically higher end processor options, while the dell's internal power supply is convenient (no brick) but takes up space and produces heat in the case, limiting CPU options.

    Hey man, honest opinion; for a cheap workstation that can also act as a gaming pc; what would you recommend? An hp Z workstation or a dell optiplex? I would of course want to upgrade the gpu and some other components :)

    • @LowcastleTech
      @LowcastleTech  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They could both be solid options, but I would lean towards the hp z workstation for a couple reasons. One, is that you have a much wider array of processors to choose from in terms of number of cores, speed and how much you want to spend. Also the Xeon workstation processors are really cheap considering how good some of them are. The second reason is price to performance in regard to GPU. While there are some good GPUs that don't have additional power connectors, they tend to be pretty expensive compared to GPUs of equal or greater power that do have the connectors. It is possible to replace the PSU of an Optiplex to get the power connectors, but you have to use adapters and such. The z workstations on the other hand, tend to have them already. For example, on one of the z440s I have there are dual 6 pin connectors. Just be careful if you go that route because not all of them have those. Seems like it is only the ones with the 700w power supply that have the additional connectors. So I just generally lean towards the workstations, but they both have some solid potential. Also give some consideration to which model of Optiplex or Workstation you go for, whichever way you decide. Sorry for the long explanation, hahah, just a lot to consider. Also, I like your style, either way is likely a good choice!

      @@LowcastleTech thanks man! Yea I’m thinking a Z. What is the best bang for your Buck processor? I’d probably just get an rx580 as those seem to be pretty cheap these days

      @@jasonmatias8979 No problem! The e5-1650v3 is what I'm running in mine. It is a 6 core processor that I got used on eBay for $20. I'm pretty sure it can run the 1650v4 as well, though I haven't personally tried it. It is only like 10 bucks more, same number of cores but faster. The e5-2667v3 is 8 cores, not quite as fast though. And it also is about $20 on eBay. Only downside is they aren't new enough to run win 11. But I just use 10 anyways because I don't like the direction 11 is going. The rx580s are looking pretty good price wise, could be a solid choice. GTX 1060 is what I'm running currently and it is a good budget match as well. There's definitely a lot of inexpensive options, one of the reasons I really like the Workstations so much. 🙂

      @@LowcastleTech thanks man I appreciate the insight. Sounds like the 1650 is a good choice. It’s like when I built my everyday gaming pc, I went with a ryzen 5 3600 mainly because of bang for my buck. 1650 for 20 bucks is ok with me! Plus the turbo drive capability makes these older workstations viable for years
