  • Learn how to use the DJI Pocket 2 to capture some astrophotography photos and 4k timelapses. We will also review the ‪@FreewellGear‬ Light Pollution (or clear-sky) filter to see if it can cut the light pollution and allow to get brighter stars. The first part is about setting up the DJI Pocket 2 and taking pictures of sharp stars. In the second part, we will see how to capture 4k timelapses. I will also compare the DJI Osmo Pocket with the DJI Pocket 2 for astrophotography and to I do a quick photo editing tutorial in Lightroom.

      @@loicba Definitely do it! I will admit to being a bit deflated seeing them: I didn't get the cool colours - at least not with my eyes. The camera however, picked them up nicely! (to my relief!). Maybe it's a male colour vision thing. We got a short trip to Iceland that I extended by a day. It include a Northern Lights coach trip. If you didn't see them you go another coach trip free to try again. The xtra day gave us that option, but we didn't need it as we saw them in two locations on the same night! You can look at my amateur results on my other channel if you like. It's called Terry McGeary (the video I think has Aurora in the title). Thanks for an encouraging video.

  • @torinsall
    @torinsall 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good video; pocket2 does amazingly well. Although it might have been easier to aim the camera at dusk, so it was ready to go when you wanted to start photos. Either way involves extra time in the cold, so I guess it depends on your preference. 😉

    • @loicba
      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It definitely would be better! The problem is that it’s really hard to know during the day when the condition are going to be perfectly clear at night. We have a lot of low hanging clouds which will not be considered on “clear night” predictions. With all of that being said, I know by hart these locations so it’s not a big deal for me to go there at night but I would definitely plan my shoots during the day if it was a completely new location!

    Such a good video, yet again. I like how you physically identify where the light pollution is, and later you show photos with and without the filter. And all your photos & videos are stamped with all relevant data. It may seem obvious but some people don’t do it or don’t make it as clear.
    Are there any cheaper alternatives to Lightroom for someone starting out? It’s just disappointing to see that it’s only available as a monthly plan for people like me who won’t (at least at this stage) use it much - it’s like joining a gym when you don’t intend to go very often.
    Thanks.

    95% + of my pocket 2 is devoted daily to Timelapse photos (sunrise & sunsets, etc) here in NYC, I also use a professional filter. I've been bitching and complaining that the pocket 2 is not as quick to focus or as sharp as the original OSMO pocket when it captures birds, airplanes even ufo's. (and would sometimes be completely out of focus when I download to my computer.) (In defense of the pocket 2 though, I have only been using the factory settings, with a couple tweeks.) I will purchase this filter. (Thanks , Nice Video) Dark/Black nights like in your video would be nice.

    Allô Loïc, i have a question with timelapse. Your video is pretty clear. Did you tried stars timelapse in a non stable ground, meaning for example on a sailboat while sailing? what are you recommendations? Can Pocket 2 follow an specific or group of stars and the gimble follow them in order to have an steady time-lapse while sailing? Thank you very much!

    • @loicba
      @loicba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a complex question because there are so many variables at play. It could technically work if the sail boat is stable enough but I would be surprised that in practice it is. I tried taking some timelapse from my dock and just walking on it is enough to ruin the shot. Remember, for each photo, the camera needs to be stable for 8-10 seconds.

    This is amazing, a shame youtube compresses the video which ruins the picture quality.
    is there a lot of grain with dark footage or can filters minimise that? I have a POket2 as well, I wanna try this out. 😃

    • @loicba
      @loicba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A filter can't reduce the noise (grain) in an image. There is definitely quite a lot of noise but it's not that bad in the end.

    • @loicba
      @loicba  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that's all about the color temperature! When taking shoot at night, you should manually set it to something that look good for you. If you take RAW images, you can change it afterwards in Lightroom in the colors tab.

      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I have very mixed feelings about that, our upload speed is currently 0.4 Mbps so it takes around 24h to upload my videos. Starlink is one of the most promising solution. On the other hand they are a disaster for astrophotography. I am still hopeful, Starlink is aware of this problem and started testing different coatings to reflect less light (it's not a huge success but a step in the right direction!)

    could that Light Pollution filter also be fitted on the pixel 4A or in my case, the pixel 4A 5G?

    • @loicba
      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's bigger than the Google Pixel 4a lens (the 4a 5G has the same lens) but I wouldn't recommend it because it has strong magnets and the Pixel phones have a bad history of fragile camera parts that can be easily broken.

    • @loicba
      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't apply any stabilization in post processing for this video! If you are taking about the timelapses, the are on a tripod which explains why they are so stable. The movement comme from the fact that the gimbal head can turn around instead of having to turn the complete camera!

    Can you tell me how I can set my Dji Osmo Action Cam for a starlapse?
    I don't really understand the "duration" because I can set only till 5h max.

    • @loicba
      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't remember the exact settings, but I think it's 10 second interval, 1h duration. You will also have to set custom settings for long exposure, but I will let you listen the video for those. The duration is the time it takes to capture timelapse, the output duration is different. If you take a 1h (3600s) timelapse (the duration), with an interval of 10s (so 6 images per minute), you get an output duration of 20s seconds.

    • @loicba
      @loicba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You’re welcome! It depends, these days, yes I am mostly alone when making the videos. Before COVID I made most of them when being out with friends and family. It’s normal to be scared when starting out, we all are! I actually tried to make a few vlogs over the years that never ended up being a video. Most of them I didn’t even bother editing them. It’s really hard getting started and if you look back you can see that I was very awkward in front of the camera just a year ago! If it’s something you want to do, just do it. Don’t wait to be “more confident” because that’s just an excuse. It doesn’t need to be good but by doing it you will learn. You should start by making something small, maybe just vlog with your phone a walk you are taking? Or record yourself inside talking about a funny story. Again the goal isn’t to publish it but just to learn and build your confidence up. It’s probably going to be terrible at the beginning but that’s okay! I started filming over 12 years ago and I still learn loads of new things everyday, it didn’t just happen overnight .

      The DJI Pocket 2 has a 64MP but produces better images at 16MP by using a technology called "pixel binding". It basically that each final pixel it will use 4 pixels on the sensor. It helps reduce noise because if 1/4 pixel has noise, it knows that the value should be the one of the three others.
