Really my only gripes are just the touch settings, and the fact that the battery isn't replaceable unless you do some warranty voiding methods or buy multiple battery grips to hold a decent charge down the line.
Yes, I agree. The camera would definitely be even better with one or two tactile buttons or switches. Appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts.
First I want to say congrats man! You got 3.55k subs (at the time of this comment) and 40k+ views on this video alone! 5 videos in the last 2 years that have views over 20k+ per video. Hey RatzOnCrack. Hilarious name btw. To be honest and hard to know exactly why but I just try to make videos about things that I am interested in. The truth is the videos that have high views are like gear based videos. Impresstions, testing, reviews etc. And to be frank not my favourite but I am trying to make them more fun than the typically ones that made that are in studio. Im usually out and about so the real world uses helps I guess. Thanks for the video idea. I appreciate your thoughts on this. thank you for watching.
@@MichaelNgvyen thanks! Do you use a Lut converter or you color correct it yourself manually? id love to see you make a video explaining how you color grade your footage, looks great!
Yeah you totally can. I like to keep my lines straight and parallel and that makes them converge. But in some situations it would definitely be fine. As some other people have mentioned, using it in flashlight mode would also help seeing the screen. I like to do a lot of crane style shots, where I start really low, push forward and start to raise the camera above my head. So in those situations, the flash mode doesn’t work for me because holding the camera above your head while the Osmo pocket is horizontal is super awkward.
I do agree with you on the "swipe", I'd like a larger screen especially so my fat fingers could manage the swipes quicker & easier. That said, I have the the custom setting "set" to my most common settings (i.e. C1,C2,C3). I would like some custom buttons instead; to your point. Agree on the ND's, these are a pain due to the size (TBH, I just use a 3 stop all the time and call it a day). For me, I'd like to see it redesigned to handle vertical content without a sensor crop. Also, a weather-sealed model.
Hey Stkuj! Yep I agree with everything you mentioned. I think they could implement the same scroll wheel/ button like they added on the Mic 2 transmitter module. I also do the same with the ND. Usually keep the ND32 on and have the auto iso do its thing. Unless its really dark. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave your thoughts!
I can’t wait to use it for car rollers! Im sure you will find the best settings, it’s not super hard to get a great image from it. Stoked for you. Thanks for watching
Maybe I’ve been lucky but I have had zero issues with it so far, it just the screen but the camera as a whole. And I don’t necessarily baby it either. Hope that helps.
Thanks for this very practical deep dive. Ever since I stopped using my Powershot GX7III + gimbal, I haven’t had a travel camera outside my phone. My R5 just isn’t practical for this usage. This video is very informative, the Pocket 3 is still on my radar but will think about it more. Coming from Canon, I’m very much used to tactile and fast interfacing, so this is one thing I’ll need to keep in mind. Thanks again! Also to your (travel) partner for being a great sport!
Thanks Shone! Yes the Pocket has been a great travel cam. Definitely better than always using a big setup. It could be mote tactile for sure. But i think it could be a worthwhile investment for you. Appreciate you watching and taking time to leave your thoughts here. Cheers
I came to point out the oversight on how to follow AND frame your subject, but it looks like others have already done so. That immediately made me go hmmm when the video started off with it as a con.
Getting my dji soon 🎉 would love to know if you have a video explain how to upload the content to iphone? Or settings adjustments for better image quality?
regarding the ND Filter issue: I use the K&F variable ND filter, so I don’t need to take it off as often. Therefore it’s less smudged. Maybe you could look at this one😉
Honestly I tried t find some but I guess they weren’t as readily available when I got the Pocket 3. How do you like yours. Any weird cross x issues ? Or are they hard stop? Thanks for sharing your experience and watching the vid!
@@MichaelNgvyen At 5 stops it starts to happen very slightly so you have to make sure not to turn further, but in the video you don’t really notice it. For me I chose K&F over Freewell because you can turn the gimbal off without taking off the filter
Hey thanks Shadi. I do find D-log can be tricky. I am working on a colour grade video. Hopefully. i can get that up soon. Appreciate your comment and time man. Cheers
Could you share what the cheaper mic options are that you mentioned? I've heard people complaining that the pocket 3 is not compatible with the mics they already own or they have to be manually plugged in to connect. I agree with you about how the cost of the dji mic makes it feel less affordable. But overall, this video was super helpful, thank you!
Hi Sophia. Yeah unfortunately only the DJI mic2 will connect without have a receiver plugged into the pocket 3. But the cheaper mic options you could look into is the Synco P2s. ( I have these). Or the Hollyland lark m2. Both those options have a very small receiver that plugs in and still keeps the pocket 3 setup small. And they are simple plug and play. Hope that helps. Appreciate your time.
Hey Bret. Glad it was helpful. Yep! Just trying to add another perspective to all the other ones out there. Tried to convey my points on how I specifically use it. Appreciate your comment. Cheers
Hey Chad. I just have my entire channel set to People and Blogs. It’s still boggles me that they don’t have Camera/tech/review category or something along those lines 🤷
Thank you for the review. Really covers all the aspects of the camera. One question though: stabilisation...do you apply any in post to soak up the bounciness of the footage from walking?
Hey Ravigza! Thank you for the comment and watching the video. I probably should’ve addressed the stabilization in this video, but I was planning on making a best practises video for best results from the Osmo pocket 3. But to answer your question, the camera is quite sensitive to the up-and-down bounce from your walk so to solve it you either need to walk really slow or have a really great ninja walk which when I was blogging on my travels, I didn’t feel like doing, but when I knew I needed a really smooth shot, I would do it. Post stabilization can really smooth out sort of the orbits or the tilt motions of the gimbal, but it doesn’t do a very good job with the walking bounce at all unfortunately. Hope that answers your question. Thanks again for your time.
Oh man i love the Color grading , it’s so cool, and too I see a short in Berlin 😊. I want to learn how to Color grade and edit videos , any ideas or recommendations?
Hey Sylva! Thank you so much! Honestly there are so many video on YT that can help. It's honestly how I learned back in 2014. I have been working on some cooler grading and editing workflow videos too. Hopefully I can get them up on the channel soon! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment.
can the footage be used for instagram to. the same landscape footage. Im struggling to film in Landscape for youtube and use the same content (just cropped) for Instagram horizontal. If I'm far enough back o the screen I can crop it with no issues, but this camera is more of a vlog camera, meaning we are quite close to the screen. How could you crop vlogging footage on this camera so it could fit Instagram without it being blurred or just an extreme close-up of my face lol. Nobody wants that! :) I keep thinking the solution here is to 1, not film vlogs. 2, film separate for youtube (when vlogging) and separate for Instagram. Just use both footage when I can, i.e. when I'm away from the camera a bit. But it defeats the reason for having this camera. Can someone help!
I think you’ll eventually find a solution that works best for your workflow. But to give you insight on mine. When I am filming and vlogging talking to the pocket 3. I have my rule of thirds grid turned on and hold the camera as far back as I can, and I make sure I am in the middle thirds. When the horizontal footage is cropped for instagram. The framing is still good. A bit of space above my head down the middle of my chest. So not just a floating head lol. I film in 4k and I export the vertical footage for instagram in 1080 so the quality is still really good. Hope that helps.
@@MichaelNgvyen this is so helpful, thank you. It's the one thing holding me back from ordering it. So u find holding it away from you enihgb and being mindful of your location on the screen is enough? That's good to know. Would a wide lens help this even further do u think?
Hi Nia, the other mic is the Synco P2S. there should be a video in my channel. It's a super simple budget mic option that works really well! and for smartphones as well! Thanks for watching the video.. Hope that helps!
This was a good review especially about your thoughts around the standard version or the extras pack. It's good to know that it can last a full day and that it charges fast. I have a Rode mic and have seen that you can connect it to this pocket as well.

Hi Christoper! Yep! Actually everything is shot on the pocket 3 except the shots where you see it. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Appreciate it!
Pocket 3 is 2 steps forward, one step back. Max exposure time of 1 second is a big nono for me. I bought a second hand Pocket 2 and I’ll wait for the Pocket 4 (hoping for DJI to fix this big mistake by then).
I just bought this! For my first camera I think this is good beginner camera! I also wanted a Sony a6600 and a 28-70mm which would of costed me probably double :/ but maybe I’ll get there or maybe I’ll love this lol Thanks for review! (I wrote this because the comment section was kinda very negative lol)
Hi Munakim! Honestly, I am finding video about cameras and gear that pick up traction with have a lot of negative and positive. It's impossible to please everyone since we all use gear different and have different needs. As a beginner this is a fun and fairly easy camera to you. I think if you keep practicing and evolve you skills you'll know when and if you will want to upgrade your camera to something like the a6600 or even the ZV-E10ii. Thanks for leaving a nice comment and watching the video. appreciate your time!
Great video, im about to buy one of these for our TH-cam channel and have been going through a bunch of different osmo pocket 3 reviews. Yours has helped a lot! Thanks man :)
Hey Okportugal! The pocket 3 is really great. Could be a great asset to your channel. Glad it is helpful to you in someway. Thanks for watching! Definitely will be checking put your channel! My wife and I have fallen in love with Portugal.
Excellent video!! Very insightful and well done. One thing that drives me crazy, that I don't think you mentioned, is the "bounce". It clear in almost all of your shots, the up and down movement when walking. Is that something that "warp stabilizer" would get rid of, in Premiere Pro? Otherwise, you have to walk like a ninja, which can look funny in public. Hence drawing attention, which defeats the purpose of this camera being discreet. Idk...just some thoughts.
You are absolutely right. The bounce is not great. I should have mentioned it but I was planning to make best practices video for the Pocket 3. The bounce can sometimes be fixed with stabilization and sometimes not I have found. The best fix that I have found is to either walk very slow or do the ninja walk if you’re gonna be moving fast as you mentioned. If you walk slow, there’s not much of a bounce at all and can still be discreet. Anyways, I appreciate you watching. Thanks for the feedback.
There are lots of issues when engineering a removable battery in a device. When you look at modern battery tech vs the longevity of a device like this, you find that the battery isn't really an issue.
Hey! Thanks! You should definitely consider it. Overall it's an amazing camera especially for travel. Honestly all the things I don't like about it or minor in the end. It provides more value than it doesn't.
I think the problem was that he was saying certain things cos he is used to having certain things done a certain way with normal DSLR's on gimbals. Especially the first part where he said it would've been nice to have the screen tilt up when you just have to tilt the device forward for the camera to come up so you are looking straight at the screen instead of having to crouch or bend the knees. Great review though. Also for the battery problem, yes it is a justified con, but what I do with batteries or devices such as this with non removable batteries is that they will have gradual degradation which is in itself a reason to get it replaced during warranty which in this case is a 2 year warranty (DJI care plan) so get it replaced before it ends and it will last you another 3 years (which is generally the life span of batteries such as these). I've had the OP2 and it still works fine, and i haven't heard anyone, yet, at least saying that the batteries don't have a good life span. Generally speaking people usually upgrade these things to the newer one within a span of 4 to 5 years which is basically how long these will last.
Hey Tom. I appreciate your comment. Critical but analytical. And you are right, I’m just addressing things that I have found bothersome to the way I use it. For some they are non issues and that’s great. Again. Thanks for a thoughtful well written comment. Have a nice weekend.
your first cons i think is easily fix by joystick, which I always do to correct the proposition... even in tilt lock mode. anyway your long term reviews are valid.
Do you mean the for composition? I like to have my vertical lines straight so if I compose with the joystick and tilting the vertical lines starting to skew and converge? Unless you mean something different or have a solution for it that I am unaware of? I'd love to know, my back will thank you lol. Thanks for within and leaving your feedback.
@@MichaelNgvyen composition... u r right... not sure why i typed proposition... 😂. i assume you are using tilt lock right? then no choice hv to move the camera lower. haha. But if you move lower, and double tap the joystick, the camera will face straight. then u can see the display better.
@@Weedeogram yeah composition. I use the ronin gimbals a lot so pretty familiar with double tap etc. I use it a lot to recenter but when you certain compositions you have to crouch over to see the screen of the pocket 3.. I see a lot of videos with people crouched over when filming with the pocket 3 so I don't think it's just me. lol. Thanks or the chat. Re: con #5, why not make a tutorial overview of the fundamentals for new Osmo Pocket 3 owners? Your gimbal movements and techniques are especially smooth.
Hey Jesse. Here is what I use that gives. E good results. Day : Shutter 1/50 - EV -0.3 - iso 50-800. With a nd32. You can also use 64 for really bright days. Night: is basically the same except I don’t use a ND and keep my ev at 0.0. If the light is consistent and even I will set my iso rather than use the auto iso. Hope that helps.
Hey Mark! Thanks for watching. I think a pro build while keeping a similar form factor footprint could be nice. Do you mean a focal length of 35mm or something similar? I actually sometimes use the digital zoom so you can get a 28mm, 35mm or 40 mm look. The quality loss to my eye is very minimal especially if you film in 4k and export in 1080 for socials.
@@MichaelNgvyen ...on the framing thing, I saw another review where he nocked the angle down with the button on the camera so the framing was lower, couldn't you have done that?
@@markshirley01 Yes, a few people in the comments have pointed out that I could frame using the joystick or suggesting that I don't know about the joystick lol. But I guess I didn't communicate what I meant well.. For some situations, to get good composition and to keep the vertical lines vertical and parallel, you have to lower the camera which causes you to have to hunch over to see the screen. If I kept it at eye level to see the screen and use the joystick button to angle down the camera the lines start to converge and I tend to not like that framing. For creative shots sure but not always.. hope that makes sense? Thanks for bringing it up.
@@MichaelNgvyen to see the screen when holding it low move the camera all the way up and hold the osmo horizontally not vertical like you did at the beginning of the video, this also helps take out the jerky steps that you see in the footage, making it even smoother. Add a small ninja walk and you’re golden.
@@JoshWilliams-mf9fc Hey yeah that makes sense. I honestly wasn't even thinking of that and I just tested it and it works. Thanks for the input as it led to this solution! Appreciate it Josh!
Dude you have too much headspace and the fix is just to tilt the screen with the joystick. Or, double tap her head to track and push the joystick to frame correctly and it will stay and look awesome. My Pocket 2 even does this.
On the battery question, I asked DJI this morning "if the main battery failed would the camera be no good to use" and the reply was " The additional spare battery purchased with the creator combo would power the camera if the main camera battery ever failed.
In regards to not being able to replace the battery so one has to buy a new one when it finally dies for good: the batteries do seem to have a fairly long life before that happens; however, I am reminded of US auto manufacturers of the last century--the cars were built with what we called 'planned obsolescence' which meant they wanted to cars to die at some point so people would be forced to buy another one. Fortunately, the Japanese car manufacturers built to last and forced the US plants to change. I don't really see that happening with DJI, but one can hope. I know I love my Pocket 3.
I definitely think they hope that we will eventually have to replace it. Capitalism 😂 But What a prompt for a cool story. Thanks for sharing it! I appreciate your time for watching. Love your avatar pic BTW
Sure you have a point sometimes that works but dynamic framing like subject tracking doesn’t always work well. Sometimes it’s introduces some weird stutters and jerkiness and the shot feels robotic. It also doesn’t work well if you start low at the subjects feet moving forward and then crane to above their head. The tracking gets confused.
FLASHLIGHT MODE - Point 1. Hold the device pointing light a flashlight. Double click the center of joystick to recenter gimbal. Now you walk and video on the subject at a level you can see the screen, properly shoot your subject… AND you are less visible as a blogger. ;)
Thanks Dana! Yes it had been suggested. I don’t use that mode often with my big gimbal and monitor so didn’t even think of it, oversight on me. Appreciate the constructive feedback. Thanks for your time

If you did something different when you uploaded these video compared to the rest would be really awesome to hear about it in your next video since a lot of people here are probably just getting started (myself included) and would provide us with some great knowledge.
I appreciate your thoughts on this. thank you for watching.
question! where do you try to keep your EV to keep a good exposure?
when shooting DLog m.
I find the highlights blow out easy so I keep it at -0.3 in bright conditions. In the golden and blue hour it’s at 0.0. Hope that helps!
@@MichaelNgvyen thanks! Do you use a Lut converter or you color correct it yourself manually? id love to see you make a video explaining how you color grade your footage, looks great!
awesome review Michael. love the cons that you bring up, good points.
Hey! Thank you man, for having an open perspective. Appreciate your time!
can't you adjust where the head will be located in a normal 9 grid in one of the settings
Quick question for ya for the first issue u had can't you just toggle the camera to aim down a bit?
Yeah you totally can. I like to keep my lines straight and parallel and that makes them converge. But in some situations it would definitely be fine. As some other people have mentioned, using it in flashlight mode would also help seeing the screen. I like to do a lot of crane style shots, where I start really low, push forward and start to raise the camera above my head. So in those situations, the flash mode doesn’t work for me because holding the camera above your head while the Osmo pocket is horizontal is super awkward.
Btw you can use the 5d joystick(one press) to get out of menus, fast.
Is the footage all stock?
All the footage is shot in D log then colour graded.
Great video! Super impressed with the Osmo Pocket 3.
Thank you. Yeah it caught many off guard for sure. Appreciate your time!
I just got mine, and still trying to figure out best settings for car rollers :), great video!
I can’t wait to use it for car rollers! Im sure you will find the best settings, it’s not super hard to get a great image from it. Stoked for you. Thanks for watching
Loved the grading in this one, Michael!
Thanks Manny! Hope you are enjoying the start of Summer
Agree. Lut or custom grading?
@@maartenjanssen it’s custom graded. I am working on something for a faster workflow though. Hopefully I can share soon!
Does the Rode mic work with it?
The rode wireless go mic does but you will have to connect the transmitter with usbc cable. A little less clean than a transmitter with built in usbc
I'm interested in getting a Pocket 3, but I've seen some users mention issues with the rotating screen. How has your experience been with it so far?
Maybe I’ve been lucky but I have had zero issues with it so far, it just the screen but the camera as a whole. And I don’t necessarily baby it either. Hope that helps.
Great Video, thanks. Was it partially recorded in Berlin? Greetings from germany.
Yep! The locations are Porto, Douro valley, Albania, Madeira and Berlin. Thanks for watching. Appreciate it 🙏🏽
Thanks for this very practical deep dive.
Yep they have. Flashlight mode is a good solution. Not perfect for every situation but works for sure.
beautiful shots ❣ you really know how to take the best out of the camera 💖
Thank you! Appreciate it! Have a nice day!
How do I get this look for my music video?
Which ND you use?
Hey man. Using the k&f concept nd filters
Thanks for this review Michael! Keep up the good work! 🙏Wondering if any color grading tutorials of the D-Log M are coming soon?
Fair points, thanks for sharing! Have been reading many good reviews, so this helps provides a more balanced perspective before purchasing
Hey Bret. Glad it was helpful. Yep! Just trying to add another perspective to all the other ones out there. Tried to convey my points on how I specifically use it. Appreciate your comment. Cheers
Question. What category do you use for camera and gear reviews on TH-cam?
Hey Chad. I just have my entire channel set to People and Blogs. It’s still boggles me that they don’t have Camera/tech/review category or something along those lines 🤷
@@MichaelNgvyen ok I appreciate that! Thanks 🙏
Really like the Look in your Videos. Do you use any specific Luts? :)
Thank you Daniel. Using some I made. Thinking about putting them online at some point. Appreciate the comment
Would a wide lens help this even further do u think?
what was the mic alternative you mentioned?
Hi Nia, the other mic is the Synco P2S. there should be a video in my channel. It's a super simple budget mic option that works really well! and for smartphones as well! Thanks for watching the video.. Hope that helps!

This was a good review especially about your thoughts around the standard version or the extras pack. It's good to know that it can last a full day and that it charges fast. I have a Rode mic and have seen that you can connect it to this pocket as well.
The fast charging is major for me. Yep i have seen hacks to make the rode work as well. Thanks for watching the video. Appreciate your comment and time.

Hi what filter do you use?
Hi. Using the K&F concept nd filter.
was the begining broll filmed on the osmo pocket 3?
Hi Christoper! Yep! Actually everything is shot on the pocket 3 except the shots where you see it. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! Appreciate it!
I have had the pocket 3 for 1 day today and the footage looks very meh so far. Spoiled with my full frame Sony sensors I guess.
I also wanted a Sony a6600 and a 28-70mm which would of costed me probably double :/ but maybe I’ll get there or maybe I’ll love this lol
Thanks for review!

Thanks realnizefilms! I love your username! Appreciate you watching and your time!
Use your phone to make fine adjustments... There are limitations. Why not set your favorites? I almost never change settings...
I love the inclusion of a yes man
great video and review ! I might get one in the future for my next holidays :D
Hey!
Im sure someone reading all this will be helpful for them. cheers

Yep yep. Flashlight mode. We have come to this solution in the comments. Greta solution for some situations. I find flashlight can be awkward for other situations. But thanks for adding your feedback. Thanks man.
Could you add sections to the video next time? It’s handy for when I come back and watch it again
I can do that! I edit this one also as soon as I get a chance! Thanks for the suggestion
Con 1, flashlight mode
Yep someone pointed it out. I normally never use that mode, even with my ronin ,unless I’m doing a spinning shot so didn’t even think of it! But it’s definitely helps solves some of that issue. Thanks for bringing it up!
Can't u you tilt up then see screen lower
You could yes. Sometime movements in the flashlight mode is a hit awkward.

2:59 Who told you that you have to hold the camera upright? that's gimbal. Hold it horizontally and adjust the angle!
Can anyone give me some good settings for day and night please :)

Don’t you have a screen protector on? That’s why you have bugs with the screen.
Point 1. Once you have your shot, press in the 5d joystick and the gimbal wont move, itll stay the shot you want until you take your thumb off.
Thanks yep. People have mentioned flash light mode. Definitely a solution. Appreciate the helpful feedback! Thanks for your time!
Great review thanks for your efforts 👍🏻 I'm hoping the next model is a pro version with at least a standard lens incorporated
Thanks for
bringing it up.
You’re holding it wrong
How so? would love to know your advice.
@@MichaelNgvyen to see the screen when holding it low move the camera all the way up and hold the osmo horizontally not vertical like you did at the beginning of the video, this also helps take out the jerky steps that you see in the footage, making it even smoother. Add a small ninja walk and you’re golden.

Thats a ok workaround. Thanks for relaying the message here. Appreciate it!
wow 600 euros... thanks for your review... especially composition shots...

Capitalism 😂
But What a prompt for a cool story. Thanks for sharing it! I appreciate your time for watching. Love your avatar pic BTW

No dynamic framing? I get what you were saying but bending down as the fix without a mention of dynamic framing? Can’t take this video seriously.
