Chinese Empire/Qing Dynasty (1636-1912) Anthem "Cup of Solid Gold" Medley (1911)

  • Gong Jin'ou (Chinese: 鞏金甌; pinyin: gǒng jīn'ōu, lit. "Cup of Solid Gold") was the first official national anthem of China, created during the late Qing Dynasty; though it was used only for a short time due to the Republic of China overthrowing the Qing Dynasty.
The song was composed by Bo Tong (溥侗), a high-ranking officer of the Imperial Guard. The lyrics, in Classical Chinese, were penned by Yan Fu, commander of the Qing Navy. Guo Cengxin (郭曾炘), Master of Ceremonies, made some minor adjustments and arranged the music. Gong Jin'ou was adopted by the Qing government on the 13th Day and 8th Month of the 3rd Year of the Xuantong Emperor's reign (October 4, 1911). However, only six days later was the Wuchang Uprising, which effectively led to the end of the Qing Dynasty with the declaration of the Republic of China on January 1, 1912 and the abdication of the emperor on February 12, 1912. As a result, the anthem never gained any notability. Since it praises the Qing dynasty specifically, it is also a Royal anthem.

Fun fact, the lyrics has NOTHING TO DO with the Qing dynasty. It's about Chiang Wei Shui, a famous Taiwanese cultural and activist leader in Japanese colonial era. This is only the First Part of the symphony.
In the first sentence, she is saying the city he was born in Yilan,
    (3:00) 宜蘭城邊小街市
In the Second sentence she is describing that city, ("The wind is clear and the moon is bright"),
    (3:40) 風清月明好安居
In the Third sentence, she said that Chiang Wei Shui was born. (BTW he was born in 1891).
    (4:08) 渭水先生初出世
In Fourth sentence she says "At sunrise, thw dragon is sinking. The flag is changing" meaning that Qing was ceded Taiwan to Japan (that happened in 1895) . That's why you can hear a fragment of the Japanese national anthem in end of this part.

    The story of Qing dynasty:
    He defeated Ming Dynasty
    He defeated Great Shun
    He conquered Tibet
    He conquered Xinjiang
He was so big, and so proud then.
One day, Britain gave him guns and machines, but he refused to use them.
He hasn’t refused opium from Britain.
He was sick, and he wanted to be healthy. Therefore he burned all the opium from Britain.
    Britain beat him for this.
Britain and France beat him again.
Japan beat him on the sea.
Eight countries established an ally to beat him.
    He cried.
His people were in poverty and starvation. They knelt for Europeans and gave all their money to the foreigners.
He knew he would die soon.

English translation (done by Yan Fu 嚴復) :
Firm and Stable be the "golden cup" (which means the great empire of Qing) domed by the Celestial concave.
In it men and things happily prosper.
Glad are we who live in the time of Purity.
May Heaven protect and secure us from enemies and help us to reach the truly golden age!
Oh! The Blue firmament is infinitely high and the seas flow everlastingly.
    _______________________________
BTW here're some key facts that you guys on TH-cam should realize in order not to refer the MISTAKEN situation to the REALITY.
The original source of the soundtrack is from this TH-cam video right here: th-cam.com/video/cVHywl3DJnE/w-d-xo.html
Purely based on the content of this link, the actual player and the original copyright owner of this song is Taipei Chinese Orchestra, 臺北市立國樂團 (their official page www.tco.gov.taipei/ ). If you guys get to check the Chinese title of the original video, the name of this song is called “旅程-蔣渭水交響詩 ; 第二樂章:龍沉日出” which literally means “The Life Journey--Symphonic poem in memory of of Tsiúnn Uī-Suí (the Hokkien pronunciation of蔣渭水;otherwise it could be pronounced in Mandarin as Jiang Wei Shui) ; the second movement: the dragon disappeared(龍沉) and the sun rose up (日出) (This means that the dragon flag of the Qing empire got replaced by the national flag of Japan. Representing the beginning of the Japanese colonial era of Taiwan, which was also the young age of Tsiúnn Uī-Suí at the same time)”.
As the title said, this Chinese symphonic song mainly describes the life story of Tsiúnn Uī-Suí. And the paragraph of Qing anthem is in order to represent his early life before the Japanese colony while Taiwan was still under control of the Qing empire before the year of 1895.
If you would like to learn more about the story of 蔣渭水 or the historical background and maybe many other interesting stories about Taiwanese culture, you guys could go Google directly for all information you need or I would like to recommend Wikipedia for the first try.
And the most ESSENTIAL reminder for everyone watching this video and enjoying the amazing soundtrack of the piece is that the ACTUAL part of the Qing anthem would only be the part before 2:46. Then right after that, the woman’s singing is NOT the lyrics of the Qing anthem NOR the melody. The Qing anthem should be sung in the language of Mandarin and accompanied with the melody between 0:00~2:46 while the singing part of the woman is actually in Taiwanese Hokkien language and the melody is based on the traditional Taiwanese Hokkien opera which is called 歌仔戲. Here’s the correct lyrics below (notes: the writing is in Chinese characters and the pronunciation is in Taiwanese Hokkien):
宜蘭城邊小街市 Gî Lân siânn pian sió ke tshī
風清月明好安居 hong tshing guat bîng hó an ki
咱渭水先生初出世 lán Uī Suí sian sinn tshoo tshut sì
日出龍沉換國旗 ji̍t tshut liông tîm uānn kok kî
    Approximate meaning in English:
Once upon a time there was a small village beside the city of Gî Lân (nowadays known as the Yilan county in Taiwan)
The breeze was gentle and the moon was bright; it's truly a nice place to live in harmony
    Respectful Mr.Tsiúnn was born here
While flag of the falling dragon replaced by the one of rising sun
Obviously the so called “national anthem of the great Qing” right on this channel is just a partial paragraph captured from the link I posted above. In my personal opinion, it is always important for all creators to be respected. If you did QUTOE any other creator’s original content, it would be the most primary for you to mention the original RESOURCE. Not to mention that such MISUNDERSTANDING between the Qing anthem and the Taiwanese orchestra--causing that almost the whole world of TH-cam considers THIS is the REAL CONTENT of the national anthem of Qing empire: ) Plus, I can't even make sure that whether the owner of this channel @Norwegian Baron had the official affirmation given from the original owner of this soundtrack before he uploaded this video. And I do believe that many of you guys are not able to ensure it either.

It would be strange that the communists chose to keep the emperors’ symbol as they pretended to stand with the smallfolks, and not the monarchists. But in general, the communists have destroyed several aspects of chinese cultures and traditions.

It was based on the formats of the national anthems of UK and Japan. They also took references from US, France, German Empire, Austrian Empire and Russian Empire. The main theme was peace.

Sadly, even if he surrounded to the United States in Japan instead of getting captured by the Soviet Chinese - Russian Armies, chances are he still would've been sent back to Communist China or or KMT China, both being bad options, one possibly being worse than the actual option that played out in real life.
