I am definitely going to be picking this up, but I wish they would release an expansion. I want to be able to play as Kyle Katarn, Dash Rendar, Cad Bane, Hondo, etc!
Slightly mitigating the dice issue is the fact it uses the same dice as x-wing. Not to let FFG off the hook here, but if you have a bunch of those you won't need to invest in a new set.
Love this game. My wife doesn't like high conflict games, so this hit a sweet spot. It isn't a tight board game, but it gives a great sense of adventure and story.
Loved Sam’s enthusiasm in the video. Was thinking of passing on this one, since my collection has so much Star Wars, but it this review has me developing a serious case of FOMO.
They need an expansion ASAP. I'm very surprised FF has'nt at least come out with the standard "more cards for every deck in the base game" expansion that they do. We need the razor Crest and Din, ect..
The problem I have with this and in FFG in general over recent years is that they sell you half the game and then you can buy extra dice and the million expansions rather than having the whole game in the box. And you could say this is to keep to a price point, but that would be ok if they were not overpriced already compared to other games.
The main reason I've decided not to buy anymore FFG games. It just ends up costing you a fortune. Everything they make is just built off the back of their expansion business model and I'm done with that. The only thing that may bring me back is another game in the Android universe but it would have to be a great game. I keep hoping for an Android revised board game.
Same here, I just considered this as I was searching for a space opera game, but finally I took Firefly. Much more game for a lower price, and I also don't like how the special properties of cards in FFG games use dozens of different mechanics (reroll here, ignore there, unless, never, may, may not, might, must, icons there, keywords here, icons in text, keywords among icons). I looked carefully at Firefly and the card design is refreshing, things work using a pair of mechanics, and cards bring modifiers already accounted for in these mechanics, instead of overwriting partially the rules in dozens of different ways. That is streamlined. With FFG cards design, it is almost impossible to get a clear view of an opponent's tableau characteristics unless you have played dozens of times.
I just played it for the first time last night. It felt really similar to Merchants and Marauders. Just with a space pirate theme and with the player actions shuffled up a bit (but only a bit.) I loved what it did to immerse you in Star Wars. But the gameplay felt VERY familiar - to a fault IMO. I wouldn't go so far as saying this is Merchants with a Star Wars skin, but it is pretty close.
Or they just had a different opinion? I guess if you want to keep hunting until you find someone who agrees with you and poopoo everyone else that didn't, that's your prerogative.
this is one of my favorite games. deffo one you need to pay attention to, and make sure to figure out what you are going to do BEFORE your turn, or it will take forever. expansions great too
I have a question. If I have negative reputation with a faction and someone else buy from the market, making that patrol move against the buyer. But I am in the middle of them so the patrol passes by me. Do the patrol stop at me or will it keep moving? If it stops, do I have to fight it right away or wait for my turn? If I have to wait for my turn, do I fight it right away or can I play planning and action first? If so, can I move away from the patrol then since fighting is step 3? Sorry ir I sound stupid. Thanks for great video!
I would say Xia if you want a more in depth sand box type game with a lot of re-playability. Until more expansions come out for Outer Rim, I'd say the re-playability is pretty limited based on what I saw in this review. I haven't played Outer Rim yet, but I have played a TON of Xia and no two games of Xia are the same... even if you try to do the same things. I do plan on getting Outer Rim as well since I'm a huge fan of Star Wars and the game looks fun.
Thanks for the review Sam! Definitely pre-ordered this one. Sad to hear that FF still isn't including enough dice - and the small print will definitely be an issue for my eyes. Otherwise sounds like a great game!
@@LookAtTheBacon WEDS is incredibly fast. I don't see this being faster than that. FFG playthrough with 4 experienced players with minimal instruction was 2.5 hours
I was over the fence with this one. I love Star Wars, I absolutely LOVED Solo movie, that finally made me start really like Han Solo (I mean - I was ok with him, but he never was particulary interesting to me), and I loved how Star Wars started showing a universe that wasn't Skywalker centric. I'm also mainly a solo gamer (pun actually not intended ;) ), and as a father of 2 lovely small ladies I rarely have enough time to do gaming. But watching this review I got convinced. Why? Well... because a Star Wars fan, who knows a few things about table top games :) says that it's smooth, sandboxy, fun, and THEMATIC! I need nothing more. Long story short: I just ordered it, and will spend few evenings of my Holidays next week playing the Outer Rim. Btw - I do have this fantasy of playing Han Solo with high Imperial reputation :D.
@@vincentheslin9636 It's fun. It's a nice, fun game. I love the Star Wars feeling, and how the game deals with the story-telling aspect. With that being said - I do feel that with all that Star Wars universe is - we could easily have more variety. I'm guessing that this will come with expansions, but that's the thing - I believe we could have a bit more "out of the box". But I'm not complaining - it's a fun little game, that is definitely worth trying for a Star Wars fan.
Hey Sam (or anyone), as someone who got rid of my copy of Firefly the Board Game because it had lacked much player interaction, is it a good bet I probably won't like this game very much and should just save my money?
Needs a Jedi expansion. Kanan, please. That numbered deck in the center of the table contains cards from 1-99, but is missing about 40 cards from that range. Obvious expansion.
Nathan Bredfeldt - Would be interesting if they had a story arch of some Jedi on the run in the Outer Rim, and the Empire would conduct a manhunt, players would be able to choose a side in the conflict or just not meddle if they wish.
@@SamHealey6 I can see Firefly and Outer Rim have almost the same amount of decks and components. Moreover, Firefly relies on simple mechanics with modifiers already explained in the rules, while Outer Rim relies on every card having quite different text, usually modifying/overwriting a rule in a different way. I can see the decks are thinner in Outer Rim but other than that I am not sure it looks more streamlined than Firefly. But of course I did not play both :)
Really liked the review! And also the rules overview! Don't know if it's my kind of game despite it being Star Wars, but I will give it a try if I can.
Thank you for curbing your enthusiasm when it came to the final score. Clearly you love this game very much, but I agree that it seems pretty lame to not include more dice. I'm glad your score and seal reflect that.
Great review Sam and I totally agree with your Cons. Corey Konieczka games are my favorite and this one hits the mark again! As with STAR WARS: REBELLION this game is a great replication of the universe. For me the movies actually put more theme into the game and gets me watching them so I can shoot out appropriate character quotes during play, LOL! I've played XIA, liked it but didn't buy it. I played this one and put my order in on Amazon immediately after. If you like STAR WARS then you'll love this game. Theme like REBELLION but half the time to play and..........nothing you have to paint (Yay! Because I can't play with unpainted minis).
Was just going to pass on the game, but how can I NOT go play it after this review? Sam's enthusiasm is pretty contagious. Keep rockin' Sam. Love these solo reviews you do.
Great review! As for encounter deck sizes, I think they can easily keep it small if they want. I’m thinking something like Runebound, where they eventually had 20+ skill sets released but you only used six in the deck for any particular game. Or even simpler, just mixing all of the expansion encounters into one deck and drawing 24 or so for each game, similar to setting up Too Many Bones encounter deck. Although doing that for all six decks may be more trouble than it’s worth.
I literally thought of Dash Rendar when I first heard of this game. I feel they could have done a lot more aesthetically (characters and ships mainly: outrider, slave 1, ebon hawk (which I know is old republic but I mean they threw clone wars Anakin ship in), etc). At least they have a decent choice of bounty hunters
@Matt Firefly is actually a lot simpler, you just do two actions per turn and everything is very streamlined in the cards. On the other hand this game is a messy mix of tokens and many pieces, a game board that is modular and a lotttttt of text. Oddly enough the small text on cards is also a problem with their Journeys in Middle Earth game.

You don't want Hondo in your crew. He'll definitely betray you.

you can. but the defence dice for xwing would be useless (if say you went out and bought a pack, specifically for this game)
Yes but defence dice are the useful type
Its more the other way around in that you can use these gold dice for x-wing
