We aren't BLACK , We are SOMALI ! : 5 Reasons Why Somalis Reject the 'Black' Label.

There is an exhausting recurring debate taking place online. The question is: are Somali people black? As simple as it sounds, it’s a question that generates differing opinions and passionate disagreement from Somalis and non-Somalis alike. It feels at times that the blackness of Somalis is being uniquely scrutinised, and it’s not only happening online.
The purpose of this video is not to impose our viewpoint on the matter, but to highlight the views of Somalis who reject the notion that they are black. This, in my opinion, is crucial if we are to objectively empathize with both sides of the argument. Here are five justifications given by Somalis and many other African tribes who reject being labelled as black.
    1. Race is a Eurocentric Construct that Doesn’t Exist in Africa.
In Africa, generally, people do not specify and identify with being black. This is understandable as they are living in a society where people differentiate themselves by ethnicity and tribes and not by the colour of their skin, as it would be pointless. Those who live in Africa are not burdened with these Eurocentric ideas about race. A racial identity does not exist for them. That is why some Somalis, especially older ones, do not identify as black. Somalis may not identify as "black" because it would then overlook their own specific identity. They have their own religion, beliefs, language, and traditions, but in America, these are ignored and they are considered black? Race is a social construct and one that does not truly exist in Somalia as there is no cultural context for it. Somalis are simply Somalis, a people native to the Horn.
    2. Africa is too Diverse to Group all Africans as Black.
Also, because of the fact that people still subconsciously see Africa as one gigantic country, with one huge group of people, we don’t tend to look into the people who live on this second-largest giant continent. There are 54 countries in the Africa, and usually even within these countries, there are different ethnic groups with different languages. You can't group an entire continent and expect them to all look the same. Once again, as I’ve mentioned before, Africa is a continent. An incredibly genetically diverse continent, one where the entire human race came from. Like I said before, the majority of the world only sees a certain group of Africans. And the whole world also tends to subconsciously regard Africa as a country with one huge group of people who all look alike. If you see and understand Africa as a continent instead of seeing black people as "one group," you’d understand why it is not wise to throw all Africans under a single classification.
    3. Black Label has Racist Origins.
Race is oftentimes quite arbitrary, and there isn't any way to definitively categorize people according to it. Definitions of blackness are regional, and they're most typically used in the greater context of the transatlantic slave trade. So it may not even be an appropriate label to use on people from the horn of Africa. That is because race is a social construct. During the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and the African Scramble, Europeans used pseudo-science to divide the human race into distinct races, labelling some as inferior and others superior to justify their fellow man's subjugation. Most of the so-called "black features" that they used to categorize "black" individuals were based on West African people. When it came to race, the word "black" was used in a derogatory way, and I don't think it's a good idea to keep this identity that was created out of racism.
    4. It’s an Inaccurate Misnomer.
It’s an inaccurate misnomer to call Africans black. I always ask myself, what does it mean to be black? Does it imply black skin? If so, why aren’t Indians black? If anything, a majority of Africans, even sub-Saharan Africans, have a wide spectrum of skin complexions that range from almost pale to dark chocolate. The Kikuyu tribe of Kenya and even the Kamba are mostly chocolate complexioned. Why would you call these people black? The same can be argued for Somalis. Africa is simply too diverse to fall under one singular colour. Africans are not black; it's because of racism that they are classified as such.
    5. It makes them more vulnerable to Police Brutality in the West.
Existing at the nexus of anti-blackness, xenophobia, and Islamophobia increases the visibility and vulnerability of Somalis. This has in part led to cases such as the tragic deaths of Shukri Abdi and, more recently, Mohamud Hassan, a 24-year-old man from Cardiff who died shortly after coming into contact with the police. Their deaths serve as reminders that institutional racism and state violence are harsh realities that Somalis encounter due to their being collectively grouped with other black groups in the UK and the States. What’s more, the more Somali youth identify with being black, the more they will be forced to conform to stereotypes of blackness.

@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106 There are some black skinned Asian too. Like South East Asian. Their skin being darker doesn’t mean they are African or African American. They just happen to have a darker complexion or rich in melanin. Chinese falls under the Asian category, they’ll probably be more offended when they are called Korean or Japanese etc by mistake rather than yellow. Or when some other lighter Asian (that aren’t Chinese) with narrow/somewhat split eyes are called Chinese will be offended or be critical. Certain skin color will not be exclusive to a particular ethnic group. As for red skin, I guess that’s debatable even though there are varieties of complexion ranging from light to dark in Native American. White people will be more offended when they are called “red neck” and some lunatic one would even kill you for that.

That's a beautiful thought of us all being of the human race, but unfortunately, unrealistic. Perhaps you are ahead of your time because In God's New World, soon to come (Psalms 37:10,11) we WILL all be one group of humans without 😢regard of regional or racial differences. At that time, only righteous and unrighteous behavior will divide and separate us. That divide will be beneficial. Unfortunately, currently Satan has us divided by racial and regional differences. This is not what God intended. Nevertheless, for our survival we currently help ourselves by being united as Black people. I am an inventor. Just imagine if we were united as African, Caribbean, and American Black folks? We would rule the World with all our talent and intelligence!
I am truly a Proud Black American. We are a people who innovated the World with inventions used by every advanced country in the World. (Look up Inventions of Black Americans) From the moment we wake up and use granulated sugar to sweeten our coffee or tea to using GPS to get to the new job and using a computer when we get there after stopping at red lights to avoid having an accident, twe have already used multiple Black inventions. There are soooo many more. If you want your feet free of Athlete's feet, toenail fungus or foot odor, you can use MY invention! (I hope to get it to market soon)

Somalis are simply Somalis and are PROUD of their ethnicity and heritage. Race based on a color created by European colonials has been rejected by everyone around the world. Ask a Native American how he or she identify themselves and they’ll gladly tell you about their Cherokee, Navaho, and Apache tribe instead of the color Red which they find it to be offensive and disrespectful. I was so tired of the online hate against Somalis because of the belief that they deny their blackness because they're somehow ashamed of it.
I knew all along that Somalis did not want to be pi·geon·holed, in to this white man's category of Africans as one very large ethnic group without any differentiation according to culture language and other identifiable identity markers

Most of semitic people of Horn of Africa are originally from Arabian peninsula and forcing them to be called black is nonsense. If they are not black they they have the right to be so . Also , semitic people never considered themselves the same people with black Africans. They called them “ Zanj “ . So it’s not just Europeans but it goes much deeper.

He said that he was black a couple of times in that first chapter. So we knew we were black before a white man told us. And Kemet the Original name for Egypt means land of the Blacks! So Black comes from Black us! We are Black and We are the Original people. O and one more thing! In the Holy Quran Allah says that He created Adam from Black mud fashioned into shape. If Adam was fashioned and formed out of black mud into shape then what did he look like? HE WAS JET BLACK! He was Black before he was anything else!

Africa is a roman designation given to the continent by General Leo Scipio Africanus when he conquered the Northern part of the continent.
He was given the name of a roman God in honor of his victory - and he in turn labelled the entire continent "Africa".

Uhm, the last part is somewhat specious. You're not subject to racism because you're grouped with Black people, you're seen as "Just Black" and the racism comes from there. If you could "pass for white", I guarantee you, police will make the same assumption. The label does not cause the racist acts, the racism (and your perceived race) causes the label.

A long time ago when I came to England, I went to an employment agency to apply for a job and I was given a form to fill in, it was an ethnicity form, it required to choose my ethnicity, whether I am African black or so, I ticked African black box but the employment agency asked me to cross it and put in Somali, actually I was quite amused. Since then I haven't been sure identifying people according to their colours of their skin. African people or people originated from Africa seem generally to be darker so it's easy to identify them as black while we identify Indians (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangolis an so on) as Indians and Chinese as Chinese, and European or European origin people as a white. It is a simple way of identifying people, nothing more than that. In reality, they aren't people look like white, for example, we know colour of the moon and the colour of white a car, there are no people in the earth look like the moon. I usually now identify my self as a green person because I love the green colour and whatever it is associated with, the black colour and it's associations became liabilities for the darker skin people so no one should accept to be called or identified as Black
