if teenagers can recognize that Photoshopped videos are fake, that doesn’t stop them from comparing themselves. they recognize the beauty standard that they’re in competition with no matter how obviously fake it is.
THISSS! And i say this as an artist myself! Even if this content in question is just the artistic expression of these creators, we have to analyze why they all look so homogenous, and what standard is set. Art influences real life! And it shows the internal biases of the creator
@The ring man said literally no one ever because this an extremely well known thing that happens all the time and you would have to be literally deaf, blind, and illiterate to not know this happens
Same thing happens with like animation and toys, it’s not a new phenomenon. I think people just need to stop looking outside themselves for narcassistic supply. Be your own fuel
Going to huge public water parks and seeing the vast variety of body types in different swim suits, just kicking around having fun, seriously helped my self image. It's healing to be out in the real world, seeing real bodies.
sad to think that when I was a child and would go to the beach (aka lake) with my family, I would see a wide range of bodies and would think literally nothing of it. I didn't see any of the "problematic" body parts that I can recognise now.
this is a good point. i have never worried about what my body looks like once i’m actually having fun at the pool. like i’m just worried about digging out my water slide wedgie 🤣
100%. I went to Ibiza terrified of revealing my body and I didn’t see a single Instagram-like body there, yet everyone was so happy and free. They looked real and genuinely beautiful. Stretch marks and all
No one needs to photoshop themselves for approval and shouldn’t have to. I feel like the progress we’re making with editing filters is doing far more harm then good. We should be setting healthy beauty standards for our next generations not putting the bar higher.
I didn’t need to watch this video to write the comment.. I already know abt this trend and have been wanting to get this off my mind, I’m very glad Salem is covering this.
@@blurby396 I was just saying lol no hate I just found it funny how theres already insightful comments when the movie just started and I'm not even halfway through dinner, this is quality content though and I'll savor it
@@_salemtovar_ Honestly I think nobody should have a problem with people editing their own pictures, because it’s theirs simply. It only becomes a problem when you start to endorse and force that standard onto other people. Nobody should have to do unnecessary things for other peoples approval. If you don’t want to see other people edit photos, criticizing and commenting on their flaws in which they (might want) to change isn’t helping the situation. The issue is deeper than “I just want to edit my photos to look unnaturally pretty!!” If you’ve ever looked at the comment section under the videos you show people are just ripping the creators apart.
It’s clear Sunny isn’t photoshopping for “cosplay” majority of the characters she cosplays aren’t curvy so there’s really no need to do it for “cosplay” she should just say “yeah i photoshop my body because this body is in and it’s what makes me money” like most of her followers are men, they won’t care that it’s fake
my mom said she was scrolling through instagram and eventually found herself looking at all these models. she said that it started to make her feel bad and she’s a grown, married woman, and that she can’t imagine how it makes a teenager feel. I just kinda sat there like “…yup…that’s social media ig.” but fr social media can be so toxic…be careful, y’all!!
I feel this! If I spend more than 5 or 10 minutes on Instagram exploring or scrolling randomly, I noticeably feel worse emotionally. I feel bad about myself, I feel bad about my life, I even get a little depressed. It's so important to be aware of how these things affect us mentally.
I agree! I have two ig accounts. one for where I follow, post arts and stuff, and one where I dont follow anyone. I do understand that what you follow is what is suggested to you in the explore page, but in the account where I don't follow anyone, it's full of selfies and beautiful faces, some maybe filtered. I have nothing against it, people can post their faces if they want to. It's just it made me feel bad a little bit about myself, and maybe insecure, so I avoid tapping it and just keep posting my arts, because, it's also an art account, and it's what I love doing. I just thought that the explore page was showing me what's popular, and I just wish that things that are encouraging, or encourages some growth in life are popular as well and is recommended. (in this case where you don't follow anyone, or maybe you're a new user). Just some thought of mine.
@@CaulkMongler it kind does depend, I'm a tattoo artist, my IG has only artists, so I hardly ever see anything else on my timeline, the worse feeling I have is feeling envious of someone else's work . That being said it doesn't diminish your struggle and not everyone is able to curate their social media very well.
Its shocking how society celebrates the extreme these days, and that's translated to looks. Exaggerated Bratz doll features and Jessica Rabbit figures were never meant to be normal: they were cartoons for a reason.
Tbh I might sound super depressing but humans are really psychogically sick right now and we are tricked as young women to think we can ever fill a void by chasing the next look. Looks are so temporary, no matter how much surgery or edits- it's an endless pit of desperation
I hate all of this editing and photoshopping. Not only does it feed women's insecurities, but it also warps men's view of what a female body actually looks like. So many of them really do believe that these exaggerated, cartoonish body types are real and fuel the problem by thirsting over them.
@@Suebee29 I meant by putting in the same effort that we do with women like in videos with the plastic surgery. Telling women they're pretty enough without plastic surgery while tons of dudes go around socials acting like if a woman isn't attractive to them personally then she doesn't have the right to exist can only do so much. Bringing them up in passing isn't really holding them accountable compared to people dedicating entire videos to holding women who "lie" accountable. It wasn't just towards you specifically, but everyone talking about this subject. ("Lie" is in quotes because plenty of people consider BOTH plastic surgery and photoshop to be "lying" while others don't.)
@@Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty Our self worth as women is more important than how men view us though. Through videos like this, we have a chance of changing how someone sees themself. Calling out the edited/fake bodies, helps us feel better in our own bodies, judge ourselves less harshly, and accept ourselves more. Its a lot easier, and much more beneficial to change the way we perceive ourselves than it is to try to change how others percieve us. While I too wish there were less men praising unrealistic bodies and lusting over photoshop, I also understand that it is not my responsibility to change how other's view me. Even if we did call out men that leeched over fake women, its not going to change anything, they're still going to be attracted to what the media pushes as attractive. We can't punish someone for liking the fake beauty standard that we also adhere to - if someone photoshops their body to look hotter, people will find them more attractive. Holding people accountable for finding that attractive isnt going to change much, but lessening the amount of fake content will then in turn lessen the amount of people lusting over fake bodies. Compare this to buying a misleading product. You can either blame the people who buy the misleading product, or you can blame the person who created the product and mislead people about it in the first place. If men only want to buy the misleading product, then thats what they'll do, but if the misleading product wasnt avaliable, they'd probably "settle" for the real thing. Obviously women aren't products, but what I'm saying is that we need to target higher up on the chain for a chain reaction to happen. Basically blame the ones who spread misinformation, not the ones that fall for it.
What’s even worse is that i know of a lot of elementary/ middle schoolers who are chronically on tiktok already. I cannot imagine being on social media like that from such a young age, knowing that even at an older age it fucks you up.
I’m in middle school, I deleted TikTok because of toxic it is, my friend told me she wants to become a stripper because of money. I’m on a sports team with some girls younger than me and I’m really upset because they talk about sexual things and it’s kinda weird because they are like 10… I really hate social media now, I don’t even use snap chat and all the other things lol
i started being on social media at age 9, im 13 now and i realized how toxic it really is and how much influence it has on kids/teens/adults by seeing the lenghts people go to fit the beauty standards
I started to use the social media at 7. (I'm 17 going on 18) and honestly I feel like my childhood went flying and I didn't enjoy it because I didn't pay attention to it. ~
When you were about to say “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” immediately knew the quote. I was extremely active in the tumblr ED community, I ran account from when I was 12 until I was 17 and finally got out of it. I cannot be on Tiktok because of how similar it is. The way Tiktok gives you a constant supply of the same content, and even as a 20 year old. I know how it’s so easy to fall into the constant trap
Although ED tumblr is obviously not as active as it once was, I can confirm TikTok still supplies me with the content and I'm still struggling. It's making it hard to want to recover but I feel alone somehow when I can't physically see other people are like me.
@@beebadoobee. you're honestly completely valid and not alone. I wouldn't say that I've fully recovered because I've had several small relapses. Recovery is hard because it's an addiction and when you have that supply..I understand completely because I've been there, I ended up having to stop using the majority of sm because of this reason ):
that quote is very old. I kinda wonder where it originated...? but I'm a woman in my mid 30s, and I still remember my mom saying that exact quote to me when I was a preteen.
I wish more people had the opportunity to participate in a figure drawing class. It's such a good way to experience what real people look like and learn that so many people have tummies and rolls. Even if the model is conventionally attractive, there's a world of difference between someone you're physically sharing a room with and someone you only see on a screen.
Figure drawing and observational studies helped me so much with my inner voice. It made me realise that nobody was truly "perfect" but that was exactly what made people beautiful.
Yes!! I just took a figure drawing class last year and it was so refreshing. I plan to take more. It helped to expand my idea of what beautiful people look like (hint: everyone becomes beautiful when you take the time to really appreciate a person for what they actually look like)
I don‘t have a tummie or rolls :/ Edit: Before anyone want‘s to attack me, the comment said everyone has a tummie and rolls, now it says so many people. That‘s why I commented that :)
I’m getting so creeped out by how normalized filters are, we are becoming more accustomed to seeing altered versions of ourselves and others, not to mention when they have harmful ass audios like “ This is what your face would look like if you were perfect” Rather than owning our own beauty as we already are, more people feel the need to get plastic surgery to look like filters.
agreed girl. it’s so sad all these celebs, influencers, and models promote photoshop and filters to their audience. i believe it’s because they’re insecure themselves and nowadays when you post unedited pics THE REAL YOU people make rude unnecessary comments both from men and women and it’s almost like a way to mask the hate you will get if that makes sense. when in reality we all would respect and look up to them more if they would show there true selfs. it’s just scary most of us are insecure from comparing ourselves to someone’s “best self” when we never actually see behind the scenes of it all. it’s not reality. our generation needs more face to face contact and interactions instead of looking a someone through a photo and thinking “wow i wish i looked like that all the time” because all nomal human beings have traits like skin texture, cellulite, acne, body hair, stretch marks, hip dips, etc. that’s what makes us human i just wish people would realize how beautiful they actually are
Even if it's not social media, I actually still compare myself to girls I see irl. I once envied my classmate who had flawless white skin, she was petite and skinny. I was jealous because she can wear crop tops in public while I can't even achieve a flat belly. Her waist and hips were so thin that if you put your hands around them, your thumbs and middle fingers would touch. We got close and I opened up to her about how I want to look like her and she replied "no your body is perfectly normal and healthy. I'm always skinny because I have anorexia and I'm anemic. I actually wish I have a body like yours. Atleast you don't get easily sick and tired" and that changed my view about myself. I realised my figure was fine the way it is.
As another skinny girl(not intentional ED but medically complex and pregnancy caused an ED) YESSSSSS. I’m so thankful she pointed that out to you, it’s SO much harder being small. We don’t have energy or any kind of reserves to help our body functioning, we are borderline starving every day. Love your squish because I desperately wish I had that lifeline for rough times ❤️❤️❤️
That's how most bodybuilders usually say that it's looking great but feel shitty inside kind of lifestyle. And it's great that she said that to you that made you change your opinion. Although we can improve our lifestyle to some degree, it should be done correctly and won't sacrifice our health, and we should have a realistic goal.
As a petite girl that has suffered from ed in the past this made me tear up. Usually we smaller girls wish to be bigger, specially nowadays where being thicc is whats attractive. We always want what we don't have. We gotta remember God made each of us beautiful. He makes no mistakes. No matter what the world thinks.
Uhh the thumb and middle finger touching thing is literally impossible. I can't even do that with a regular BABY. How the hell is that scientifically possible for a grown girl to have a smaller waist and hips than a literal baby
The rampant cases of body dysmorphia our society doesn't address is staggering. Straight from the opening you see a woman who is naturally stunning, but feels the need to photoshop herself to look like Jessica Rabbit.
I honestly thought it was plastic surgery at first, so it was pretty shocking watching this. I guess it's another reason not to believe everything you see online.
I'm honestly so proud of you for getting up, doing your makeup, and filming and editing a video while you're sick. When I had "bovid" I barely left my bed. You go girl!
i feel like the "asian" beauty standard isn't really "asian." there are lots of types of asians and the one trending right now only shows east asian features, which i admit that they are really attractive people, is still eurocentric with problems like colorism still rampant.
To be fair, 2016 trends were more Middle Eastern (West Asian) trends because people did makeup for big eyes and big eyelids like Indians and other West Asians. They have a very pretty shape just like the monolids do. My slight hooded eyelids could never.
This! Im from southeast asia and our beauty standard or trends are really different than one in east asia, and i can also say its super different in especially in south asia
@@machinegirl03 yea skin lightening is unfortunately all over asia, but in my country people much prefer curvy and thicker body shape, and from what im seeing in east asia they tend to like cutesy type while here the standard are more mature and classy looking face
By the way don’t get me wrong I for sure think that being honest about those type of things is in many ways desirable but not because of the “insecurity“ of others rather for themselves. Just think about it who is more insecure the person that had to modify their body or the people who point fingers at them for doing so without telling the world about it.
No, as an Asian who has lived through my entire life with toxic asian beauty standards enfo4ced in me, believe me, this is a can of worms u do not want.. asian beauty standards are very specific and very niche.. even the colour of your joints are a part of the beauty standard, as well as the length of your limbs.. and very very unnecessary "proportions" check. Sometimes even their teachers favor lighter skinned children and that's infuriating.
Are we going to continue to act like it’s NORMAL for content creators to get demonetized for saying Covid? ... .. . This level of control and censorship is going completely overlooked at this point. It’s wild.
I was looking for this comment, it’s so weird for TH-cam to want to demonetize covid even though it’s a word so deeply tied into our everyday lives these days

It’s not a scary word, it’s not a bad word, it’s not an offensive word. I almost think that it does an injustice because is a person has the virus they should be allowed to name their illness! As an artist who draw mostly body anatomy, figure and poses, I sorta can tell how abnormal looking these "ideal/attractive" bodies really is. idk how to further explain it but it just doesn't look right..?
I'm glad you're talking about the ED community on Tumblr. A friend of mine from elementary school died by sui* a few years ago, and ALL of her tumblr was proana/body hatred stuff on it. I think the adult content should not have been taken away from Tumblr, but they needed to target THAT content because it enabled and fed into the disordered behavior.
That was the most attacked part of it and it probably gave a lot more time to your friend, the elders of those group were well meaning and supportive of what the person decides to do at their stage
16:00 it’s kinda crazy how people even start to forget how insanely toxic korean beauty standards are when it comes to being skinny, a lot of the diets that I’ve heard some women in kpop go through is literal starvation, although it’s wonderful to see Korean culture and music become even more popular in the US, unfortunately so are the toxic beauty standards, hell they’re even more strict than American beauty standards...I don’t think having curves will ever stop being a “trend” well at least the more slim thick kinda way, but I do think there’s a new wave of being skinny being a trend again, and then it’ll change again, and so on and so on, I swear women never get a break...
We really don’t, sadly being a woman has come to us having to be the new trends constantly. That could come with MORE eating disorders, mental health issues, or the rise of a new cosmetic surgeries we have now.
I knoowww :( it’s so frustrating to see teens making excuses for these anorexic standards to exist in kpop. ”That and that is naturally skinny! They eat so much during tv shows!” ….. DELUSION
Honestly I think we- the U.S. are exactly he same in terms of dieting, E.D.’s, and those random tools that get sold to “become thinner”. As if being thin is the best thing someone could be instead of Idk being generous, kind, sincere in actions, etc. and the fact is that more and more companies will get money from oir insecurities they point out. Like if people look one way the companies will be like, “hey let’s point it all their flaws and market a product to CoRreCT what’s wrong with them and make money off of them” it’s sickening. Women all over the world will never get a break. We always have to change something about ourselves to suit others as if we are made to be looked at, when that’s not the case. I could go on about this for days but I am sick of the standards everywhere on the world forcing women to pay for stuff that will never make them happy. And I’m sick of women getting told that if we are not a certain standard we aren’t enough when that will never be true. But the companies make money from it so of course we see that every day 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
It is worse with age, because most cultures demonize older women. 🤷 Personally, I can't wait when I get to that age when people mistaken me of being a powerful necromancer or a vampire lord, considering I age slowly like Keanu Reeves and Tom Cruise (I have whatever genetic disorder they have that causes slow aging). 😎👍
16:08 as an asian living in asia, im going to say yes, asian beauty standard is bad and unhinged. go on salem, u can say it it's ok bc it's just how it is. it IS bad and toxic.
Yeeeee Im chinese and asian beauty standards are hella hard to maintain unless you’re literally starving yourself and not taking good care of your body
I'm not Asian but whenever I started learning about Asian culture (specifically Japanese) I realized how scary the beauty standards are over there. I contemplated moving to Japan but I knew my black *ss would never make it over there I'm to weak 💀 (also now with Japan closing it's boarders)
I was kind of dissapointed when seeing the sponsor part and honestly I hope you agreed to it just because you didn't know better. For anyone out there who still doesn't know Established titles is a scam. Its a company from Hong Kong that owns some land in Scotland and sells meaningless certificates for like 50$ or so. You are not buying the land, just the pdf file. Do they plant trees? Well they claim they cooperate with One tree planted and Trees for the future. If you want to help these please just donate the 50$ to these legit projects its so much better than when Established titles gives them 1$ to plant a tree and keeps the other 49$ so they can continue to scam people. And also, this depends on the country you live in but you usually cannot actually change your name to lady and have it on your credit card and so on...
This is why I almost never trust the things TH-camrs promote. Even if they don't know that they are promoting scams(a lot of them do imo), it's still disappointing how they won't even do a background check on the company they are promoting
The biggest thing with Sunny's response being like "It's about looking cartoony" is so whack in context of her Annie AoT video with HUGE hips. That has nothing to do with the cosplay! Annie is not even built like that, so claiming it has anything to do with "cosplay accuracy" is an entire load.
The bodyshaming and fatphobia on that app is so horrible as well. I hope that these kids grow up and learn that looks are very miniscule and not really that important overall.

It’s a sad reality to face when even the people who are “meeting” these impossible standards are still feeling so undesirable, worthless and crying themselves to sleep every night. It’s hard to be optimistic about social media…
It seems nobody can be happy with theirsleves when they consume a bit of the inernet :(. Before COVID I didn't worry about looks at all or judge anyone based on it everyone looks just like people to me but with more exposure to media during I got a little bit consumed into it and thought my legs which are thin af, thick. It is really sad, but I'm working on slowly reversing toxic beauty standards and seeing me as beautiful
I think it's hard to be optimistic about society too. Even people who existed before social media seem to have struggled with body image issues...beauty standards have always been a thing in society
Just wanna clarify something rq. In Asian countries, the beauty standards aren't centered around being pale because of white people, it's due to classism. Back in the day, if you were pale, it meant that you didn't have to work outside all day and could afford to stay inside. It has nothing to do with colonization :>
Thanks I was looking for that comment before commenting it myself. I actually studied Asian history at uni and it kinda annoy me when people say those standards are eurocentric when they existed before any contact with Europe
Saying that it has _nothing_ to do with colonisation is a bold face lie. It isn’t all about colonisation but it definitely has something to do with colonisation.
speak for yourself lmfao... countries like the Philippines colorism 100% stems from colonization. Thats why half filipina half white actors get ALL the attention on screen and you barely see any dark skinned filipinos despite them being the majority among all filipinos. stop ignoring the after effects of colonization.
It feel like a dystopian novel where we are being warned about the dangers of photoshop and filters and we aren’t going to realize how dangerous it is until it’s too late. It’s so sad
the fact that like 80% of all makeup filters on tiktok (especially the ones that go viral) change your features to look more Eurocentric and thinner, and tiktok doesn't do anything about it is so gross! Not only does it feed into these standards, but bs like that is so harmful for people with body dismorphia and ED's. I miss when tiktok only had a few makeup filters.
The fact that I didn’t even bother about my hip dips and my stomach until I saw the beauty standards on TikTok. I’ve spent 2 years hating my body, listening to subliminals consistently and crying while looking at myself in the mirror. I’ve literally only realised the other day that my body is perfectly fine the way it is. I’m 13. Also- tysm for your comments it’s really lovely and I have thankfully been able to accept my legs and hip dips. Now I am just learning to love my belly but I feel like I will be able to soon
Idk if this helps any but hip dips are very common! I'm also a bit insecure about it, but I find some sort of comfort knowing that marilyn monroe had them too.
I'm 15 and like a year ago I had a huuge problem with my hip dips and when I first saw stretchmarks on my body (They can literally just appear randomly) I had a literal breakdown. What i did was unfollow all of the cosplayers I followed before and bro- do I feel better now. What also helps is experiment with clothing styles. Once you find your style your confidence will go up like crazy I swear.
As a 20-something girl, I have to tell you, hip dips are perfectly normal, you can't change your skeleton and muscles in some places, nor you have to change them. Hip dips are beautiful! Also stretch marks look like Tiger Stripes :P I got mine from growing up fast as a teen and I love them now. Hope you'll learn to love yours too!
Im almost 18 so im not exactly an old and wise mentor but a piece of wisdom i can share is that puberty changes your body completely so body positivity is a really important thing now especially. Also hip dips are just caused by the way our skeletons are shaped, rachel maxy made a great video on it!
Food for thought, this is already starting in elementary school now, and keeping your kids off social media early on isn't foolproof as their peers may have access and share their findings. I had to already have discussions with my 8 year old about body image, what is fake and isn't fake and what it means to be healthy as well as different body types. It is an ongoing conversation you need to start early if you are a parent because it is insidious.
I’m a millennial, and tumblr was very toxic and very dark. That’s why we went to Instagram. However, in a few years Instagram became just as dark and toxic. I gave up on social media a few months back and I’ve never felt better in my life. All social media is a popularity contest. You guys please, please, please stop comparing your body, and lifestyle because most of the time these people be fronting.
That’s is a fact, but I will say, it’s definitely possible to make it without doing any of that tbh, If a lot of people were just able to 100% be themselves and post whatever random picture/video and not follow an algorithm, people would be so much more happier while still being able to enjoy the positive aspects of social media and could gain a following because everyone is weird in their own way.
Ok, this is going to be long. When you talked about beauty filters, it reminded me of a toxic trend that took place in India before TikTok was banned here. There was a filter used in this trend that showed how you would look in both dark and light skin complexions. In this trend, the videos began with poorly dressed creators putting a sad music and sad expressions because the filter shows them with dark complexion. Then when the filter shows them in light skin, they switch to good clothes, cool expressions and a popular Bollywood party song as BGM. The trend went on for many weeks until some foreign creators (especially African Americans) began reacting negatively to and reporting such videos. It was a relief when the trend ended and many creators took down their videos. I guess TikTok banned it too. Also 🦆
Wow that's crazy, I've never heard of that!! I honestly don't know why "whiteness" or "lightness" is pushed as more desirable. I suppose white supremacy is rampant everywhere 🤷♀Even in the subconscious of other societies
@@smartypantspod frrrr !! I’m from Indonesia (we got colonised by the Netherlands) and to this day we still adhere to white beauty standards (I.e: lighter skin, lighter eyes). When I was in hs some of the insecure girls would dye/bleach their hair bc they ‘Didn’t want to have (natural) black hair bc it’ll make them look like maids’
@@viedaz.4291 Dang! So much of the messaging we receive as children is that we must adhere to someone else's view of what is "right" or "good", and we are not taught to decide that for ourselves. I feel for those girls, I'm sure they believe that bleaching their hair will make them happy but it certainly won't.
Ikr, I'm Indian and when I saw that, i was horrified. The colorist views rooted in Indian society are so damaging to a lot of people. I have heard parents or older relatives saying things like "oh your skin is so dark, you'll have a problem finding a marriage partner", and even though they mean it as a joke most of the times, it is so dehumanising to hear that. My skin tone is more on the lighter side, to the point where a lot of people assume I'm biracial (even tho I'm not). Even at a very young age, I was aware of the advantage i had over my more dark skinned peers, due to the complements I'd hear. People always have praised me for my eurocentric features, and when i was young i liked the praise and attention. i got extremely obsessed with maintaining this light skin, I'd never go out in the sun, wear loads of sun screen because i was scared of getting a tan. Now whenever someone complements me i assume it's just because of my skin and not because I'm actually attractive.
I don't think it's just asian beauty standard but asian beauty standards through a European lens. One of my favourite creators,Khadija Mobwe, said something similar to this that'll I'll try to paraphrase. Black fishing (or poc fishing) is not about becoming that race, it's about picking characteristics you like best and using them while maintaining your white privilege, it's about being poc adjacent rather than poc passing, putting poc features on a white face and just going that much far enough that you have the desirable features without looking poc, it's about cherry picking (this is the general gist not a direct quote)
But when you mentions white privilege and thus people of colors discriminations acts; you talk about it like it's a characteristics unchangeable in our world. Like it became a a law of the universe kind of (i'm not sure i'm clear enough). And i think that there is a problem with that thinking, even if now in 2022 there are discriminations for people of colors obviously, we should focus of the roots of the problems? The problems is in peoples mind and vews to see others and society. It's the people who are flawed like that not the society and the world in its origins. There are parts of this world where we don't believe people of colors are inferiors of whatever... So to me the whole "Black fishing (or poc fishing) is not about becoming that race, it's about picking characteristics you like best and using them while maintaining your white privilege" seems a bit odd to me. Like, this kind of mentaly, will never heal the problem at it's root, and it's a way to attack one of the tentaculas no the head really... @@Liza33650 oh I agree but I don’t think OP was trying to say their a solution they are simply stating the problem with white privileged had brought upon the last several centuries of modernism
@@Liza33650 you seem to mean well but honestly white supremacy and white privilege IS the root of race-fishing. they are the reasons people feel like they have the right to appropriate and claim features that aren’t their own. just because some white people may not be openly and explicitly racist doesn’t mean that they are immune to the influence of white supremacy and white privilege. these forces perpetuate the dominant system of power. focusing on the individual offender instead of on the big picture seems more divisive than productive.

DO NOT USE ESTABLISHED TITLES. i'd just like to mention established titles is a scam company that many youtubers have been using. a lot of youtubers made apology videos about it. if you want to know how its a scam, do a bit of research on it.
I hate those Instagram filters that are kind of gimmicky but still feel the need to photoshop your face and give you a full face of makeup. Even those where you can select how much/what kind of makeup you want have no option to turn off the photoshop. I just want some mushroom stickers on my face goddammit
as an older gen z and someone currently still on tumblr and not on tiktok, when salem said "Tumblr was for millennials what tiktok is for Gen z" I felt like 🧑🏻🦳
Yeah same though, I'm born in 1999 but I feel like for most things I can relate to millenials more than gen z. I think it really a person to person basis around our age though
@@cocoacoolness Definitely. I don't see myself as Gen Z at all. Maybe I have bias or something but the generational gap between those feels super small
I almost feel like there's little subdivisions within Millennial to Gen Z... I was born in 2002 and I feel like the gaps even between 2000 to 2002 to 2004 are so different just because of how fast handheld technology developed from 1990s-2010s
It would be so different if those girls say "yeah I'm using Photoshop to look like a cartoon I'm cosplaying so please don't compare yourself to my cosplay" but no, they want us to think they look like that which is sad since everybody has a beautiful body, either be beauty standard or not
Ikr?? It's so easy and fixes all these problems I think they don't want to though because they wanna trick men into buying their sexy cosplay Patreon photos and such and guys always seem to get mad when their fantasy is turned out to be "fake" (I've seen many men get outraged when they see their favorite sexy cosplayers without filters/editing and vow to never give them money again) They want to play into this profitable fantasy for men, but at the cost of other girl's self-image (Btw I have nothing against these girls selling sexy cosplay photos itself, just wish they would be honest about it and guys could stop having a shitfit over it)
As a person with ana...seeing those photoshopped bodies really triggers my negative thoughts. Lately I've been avoiding tiktok because of all the negativity about being too thin or too thick
When I was a kid, there was a woman working at the local DQ who would tell the teenage girls "a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips" when they went through the drive-thru. You would think we would have run out of ways to shame women for their bodies, but apparently some things really never change.
This is really horrifying because instagram, at least, we all knew that photoshopping can be extremely subtle on a static image... But I think it's more difficult for some people to believe that those idiots are photoshopping themselves on video and easier to just assume they're like that irl, especially younger audiences.
Everyone is photoshopping everything.. Its kind of hard to figure out what is real sometimes... I hope there will be a day where everyone will be able to feel comfortable and confident about who they're, tiktok had many many weird stereotyping trends.. And the body shaming is so embedded in this platform.. I don't even use it and I already had enough.. What sucks is that most of its users are younger generation.. This can make them grow insecured and hard to accepting themselves
when someone who isnt considered "perfect" makes content they won't be getting any views so I understand why people feel the need to photoshopp. I'm just trying to understand every side
@@Edaloyloy literally go ahead and do this girl, I know a did this half a year ago, at first it felt like I was missing something ngl, but after a week I realised that having this freetime and freedom to think about my own goals in life, without constanty distracting myself with comparison, was so freeing. I mean most ppl in this app don't rlly care about one other wellbeing, alone the braging or faking shows it pretty well, so why would you want to waste your time with constant toxicity. Just my take on it tho
The fact is that with each passing trend, more folks are speaking out against the beauty trend problem. And that alone gives me hope. It's only so often folks can go slim to thick to thin again before realizing something isn't right.
I feel bad for those uncomfortable with their body and the people that feel like one of the only ways to get approval is by editing their body, I personally think it’s doing more harm than good :(
I am similar to them in a way that I hate my body WAY TOO MUCH, but instead of photoshopping , I just avoid looking in mirrors or taking any pictures if I can help it. Both are equally horrible. I've lost friendships because I refused to take pictures with them...
I have a friend like that. Shes VERY beautiful and all the guys are dying to talk to her yet she always photoshopp her face and her body one of my other friends before told her that shes very beautiful and she doesnt need it but she kept going anyways.
I feel guilty after watching the video. I don't have tik tok or Instagram, but I often edit my face and body every time I post a photo where Im in it or for a profile picture. I don't tell that to people, because they'll probably just think Im desperate. Until now, I still edit my photos.
The Asian beauty standard of pale skin is rampant. The first thing that EVERYONE says to me when they first meet me is, "you're so white" (white as in pale, not Caucasian.) Skin colour is something people are very conscious about, it's definitely not going away anytime soon.
@@lesbiansuckd7106 Yeah I do, I won't deny that. It's just jarring how much people care, how people compare themselves/others to you, and what people say to you.
@@Lunalla yes, i meant to express that when popularised by western media, it's publicised to incite the reader or viewer to CHANGE themselves.. with commending language ("GET YOUR SUMMER BODY ON" for example) It's not that the beauty standards are wrong themselves. When You come to understand how these communities used physical appearance as a marker of an experience which they as a collective have come to appreciated and it slowly becoming culture, you appreciate the beauty of these people. I.e. East Asian people who appreciate lighter skin as a sign of wealth for not having to work in the sun all day. Or some West African cultures that appreciate plump women as a sign of security, having resources in their community to not starve.. Western media just oohs and aaahs and says "aesthetics".
@@Lunalla what are you talking about? Some cultures had milder beauty standards, like regarding clothes, hair, make-up, jewelery; some had some cringey but mostly unhamful beauty standards la japaneese blackened teeth or european extremly pointy shoes in the middle ages; some definetly harmful but pretty survivable, like corsets, hijabs, pumping your muscle non stop at the gym, tribal estetic like lips with wood through them, ear modiffing or neck rings that push down the bones below your neck; and some down right horrifing or mutilating like feet biding, filling teeth to the point they look like crocodile teeth and have permanent nerve damage, etc. And the most damaging ones are not from the west. And with the evolution of one culture, the "beauty and fashion standards" are becoming less and less harmfull, at least to the individuals of that culture. I'd rather be judged that i have to thick/thin eyebrows, am chubby and my clothes are dowdy than having to tatoo half of my body against my will when i reach puberty or some other weird visible identifier in a different culture. Wich probably i wouldn't even have the choice to refuse.
thx you, its like noone wants to acknowdedge that these were standards in many cultures b4 eurpe came on the scene...and that these apps are made to make us all feel like shite...by design, thro them out live in the real world its much friendlier and happier than they tell you
Honstly this is so sad for years we been trying to get fashion magazines to stop photoshopping models only to end up for us as individuals photoshoping themselves for things.
The Y2K superthin look is definitely gonna come back with the rise of early 2000s aesthetics. And honestly to admit something, the way I had gotten with my body issues aiming for the popular body type, when i noticed the trend coming back, an instinctive thought I had was “At least I’ll look curvier once that gets popular”. Which obviously is completely wrong and I really don’t want the utter horror of what’s gonna happen if the superthin body comes back in style, especially given that BBLs being undone will be so painful on so many levels for so many people who got them, its sad
I’m so sorry, honestly I- The fact that bodies are seen as trends and for companies to get rich, is VOLATILE! I can’t even. This is why I don’t have Twitter, tumblr, snap, Instagram (well for bullet Journaling lol), etc lol. Like it’s the worst that platforms are promoting the nonsense 😭 and we are left to feel the aftermath
@@anyone1111 Absolutely! Like with Kim, it generally hits the influencers peddling it way less since people like herself can get them undone and redone professionally and safely
This is why I wish it was more accepted to wear less revealing clothes, and if you want to fit the standard, use shapewear and padding. Like in the past, the dramatic curves of Edwardian times were from corsets, pillows, and bustles. Even now you can buy corsets and butt padding, so I don't get it. Like, you can wear a push up bra with tons of padding, why not normalize other garments for changing shape? Or the better idea, just make fashion trends something that doesn't rely on what body shape you have. I don't fit fast fashion due to my body, and I've been working on sewing some more timeless designs that fit and are comfortable, but won't get me too many weird looks for being out of style.
@@jlbeeen yes!!!!!! beauty standards become so dangerous when they rely on changing your literal body. before it was the ratio of waist to hip or whatever, not the literal measurements! i’ve found that garments i’ve made that make me feel good totally transcend a trend.

I say tumblr is a lot better now, definitely feels more "safe" than other similar social media. It feels like the kind of calm you get from a post-apocalyptic setting.
i think cause most people who use it now have grown older.. the majority of teens don't use tumblr anymore but other plattforms. the toxicity comes usually from the teenage energy..
what me personally always gets me out of an insecurity on my body is the thought "you were born with it, you walked your first steps in it, you made presents for your mamma with those hands, you smiled with those lips and your hair was combed by your dead grandma" since i got that thought i LOVE myself and it encourages me i be open about it. I love my body...an i'm proud of it.
The best way to bat this- Delete TikTok. Stop supporting Tiktok. I was so insecure when I used it. I was blocked creators bc it hurt to see what i was meant to look like. I was so much more sad. Life felt slow and boring without that constant stimulus. It’s horrible for your mental health and attention span!
I have brown skin and I've grown up hating it, wanting to be whiter because I thought that that was what's beautiful. It wasn't until later in life that I got to really appreciate my skin color as it is part of who I am and my culture. Seeing those filters and your skin whiten up with them doesn't help you appreciate your skin color. Seeing people with my skin color or even darker being confident and loving their skin color and body helped me like mine too. 🦆
I almost died from my ED. All these photoshopping occurrences I find really heartbreaking, knowing that young girls like who I was like when i was younger are going to see this and suffer like I did with body dysmorphia. I hope things don't get worse. I hope so badly that society can encourage all girls to accept their bodies and love themselves and not feel the need to change.
Especially as "Sunny" constantly berated the young girls and women who would call her out on the harmful and untruthful body morphing. It was absolutely disgusting as she would tell these people that they were "just insecure" and that "your insecurities are not my problem", which is TRUE but there was no reason for her to sweep it under the rug. And only when her "scandal" (which could have been avoided as a scandal in the first place if she was just honest) finally had been brought to light by people zooming in and getting better looks at the unnatural swerving of her body, suddenly she's "never claimed she didn't edit her body" and "it was for the aesthetic"... I'm happy she was banned
It's funny that you say TikTok is like tumblr 2.0. I'm one of the few weirdos that still uses tumblr, I've been on there for more than half of my life; I'm not stopping until it's dead and gone. I was on tumblr back in the day and I'm still on tumblr now.... and this is something that has actually been a point of discussion on tumblr. The amount of times I've seen people on TikTok have the same discussions, the same arguments, and the same scandals that happened on tumblr is kind of insane.
Also I feel like the side of tumblr I’m on rn is so much tamer than the side of tumblr I was on 7 years ago Tiktok is in its early stage of toxicity lol
@@a_little_disquised1101 That's because everyone left on tumblr is now in their early to mid 20s, and remembers old tumblr lol. I wanna hope that tiktok will mature too
@@rai1578 I highly doubt that sadly because of how tiktok is controlled to promote this toxic material like crazy that unlike tumblr (I've been on there since the beginning, not now since I forgot my account completely) that pulled the whole plug on NSFW and actually tried to moderate the site, tiktok feels to me (I'm not on it but from my sister being on it) its a wild west of anything goes and the worse the content the more people will see it.
i love that you’re actually talking about this because it is such a serious problem, im in middle school and i see so many people in my classes on snapchat and tiktok using beauty filters and altering their bodies with filters, and it makes me really sad because we’re all so young and things like this have really affected the world 🦆🦆
I had sincerely hoped that with people encouraging others to find their own style and fit the clothes to their body rather than body to the clothes, we'd see more and more acceptance of natural body. I follow creators (here on yt, I'm not on tiktok for several reasons) who are transparent of the work they've got done, who talk about the filters, poses and lighting they and others use to appear to have a certain body shape, smoother skin, etc. (Stephanie Lange is amazing for this btw) and hoped that we'd see more of this trend in the coming years so that the next generation could hopefully grow up with healthier and more realistic body standards but it seems like that will only be a dream now. (Reminds me of millenials and older generations saying that they thought we would be the generation who would grow up not addicted to tobacco and smoking and then vaping came along.) But we can't give up. Hopefully informative content like Salem's and Stephanie's can help people grow up more secure about themselves and help already insecure individuals to remember that the body type shown in tiktok and other social media is not the only type of body out there.
Ha! I agree that our direction should be towards health and I follow Stephanie too! I love her content on this topic as well. I made a comment on this video in another area and I said that this isn't a body type/look that is popular. Plastic surgery Jessica rabbit is popular.
It's amazing how much clothes that ACTUALLY FIT US can make us look 10x better than to try and fit in clothes that are obviously not compatible with our figure
Not being on social media has definitely helped me from hating my body. Seeing the different bodies around me reminds me constantly what a everyday body looks like and not be sucked in by all the Photoshoped bodies
Yes! Same, I honestly feel for content creators and people who have to use social media for their work, (sometimes that means realtors, interior designers, makeup artists, etc.), who rely on it for their livelihood bc they don’t really have the option. Or at least it’s harder for them to not be on social media. I can’t imagine what that added reliance on it would do to your mental health. I could never, oof.
I've been on tumblr for ten years now but I've never seen those types of posts. i'm not saying it didn't happen but maybe it was all before 2012 and never had that experience myself.
It's the same problem with fitness influencers that try to play off that they're natural when they aren't, it sets an unrealistic possibility to the people following them
Definitely agree that projecting unobtainable or unhealthy ideas about beauty onto people over tiktok is gross and dangerous, but I just want to pipe in and say that the idea that being pale, round faced with small delicate features is not a beauty standarn European colonisers pressed onto Asian cultures. I study ancient Persian manuscript art and the heroes and heroines depicted on their manuscripts going back as far as the 1300's are shown with those exact features. They originated in East Asia from earlier Chinese and Mongolian art, not the west. What we are seeing emerging today on tiktok are western interpretations of preexisting Middle-eastern and east Asian beauty standards. Just a small fact check!
Thank you. I feel like it's a little dangerous to say something like that like it's fact like Salem did when it's plainly not true. I think it's really cool she's doing more casual videos and its def a learning process on what you can an cannot say when you speak freely without doing a ton of research first, but I think in the future it might be good if you don't make statements like that if you haven't looked into it to confirm it (talking about Salem).

@@Angel-jt2pl oh sure, the way that the only right way to be 'beautiful' currently is to bend and mask yourself to fit in within a set of very restrictive western ideals is terrible and needs a lot of unpacking. My point was just, historically speaking, the features described, pale skin, round faces, small features, have been favoured in the Middle East and East Asia since the early middle ages, a long time before the west had any significant influence over their culture. To say otherwise is to remove their own history and agency as individuals.
@@Angel-jt2pl No, it does matter. I've argued with SO MANY MEN about this the exact same way I say the bodies are edited, and they usually go "no, just go to a gym. Women look like this all the time" they are absolutely convinced women really look like this Like I used to go to the gym daily and women never looked like this. I found Tumblr at my lowest point and fed off of all the fragile, frail thin bodies my eyes gazed on. My body dismorphia has been following me from the time I was 6, SIX YRS OLD! Its still with me but I don't have time to think much about it now that I'm a mamma. I was dress shopping today and it triggered me so bad. I started uncontrollably crying in the dressing rooms for at least 20 minutes. I feel pathetic... it's drives me mad that I don't actually know what I look like. My mind shows me something that might be there, or not. I don't know..its so confusing. I get so tired.
Don't feel too pathetic, because I'm pathetic too. I get really tired too. The best thing about being a mom is that I get to smother my child in the love I didn't get.
@Elena Vargas @Valentine Lebeau Neither of you are pathetic! The first step of getting out of the habit/mindset of shaming yourself for dysmorphia is recognizing that it's happening and accepting yourself however you're perceiving yourself at the moment! Shaming yourselves for something so largely out of your control is unfair and I'm sure you'd never ever shame someone else for their body dysmorphia because you're most likely both wonderful, beautiful people who deserve acceptance, patience, and understanding! If you wouldn't do it to someone else, don't do it to yourself! And most of all, you both (and everyone!) absolutely deserve unconditional self-love someday :) sending you both good vibes and love and hope you both practice being extra nice to yourselves today!!
ngl one thing thats so bad about this is many people, including myself until recently, dont know that it’s possible to realistically edit videos like this. so you just assume that’s what they look like
I'm naturally "curvy" and am terrified that beauty trends seem to be going back to the 90s/ 2000s thin. And yet, I know that a lot of my naturally thin friends feel self conscious these days about "not having a butt". Idk guys. Thanks for calling it out Salem. Sending you health and good vibes❤🦆
I have a nineties thin type body because of genetics and I am also terrified. This is not a body that’s very attainable if you don’t have the literal skeleton for it, and even I thought I wasn’t skinny enough, resulting in ana that I still struggle with until this day.
@@GreenAndGoth I am so sorry to hear this. I wish you good health and healing. For what it's worth, your body is deserving of goodness, rest, and food just as it is.
It’s not just affecting females by sheer comparison to the photos.. it also the astonishing reality of how there are cis/het males who are still not privy to the way photoshop works and in tandem are actively, albeit indirectly, perpetuating the lie that women and people who present as female actually look like the augmented photos in real life. It is actually sickening and dangerous how all of this is marketed just as much towards males as it is to females and these girls in the photos are keeping the lie alive by doing this, even if that wasn’t their first intention, it’s still the consequence.
100%. They perpetuate this lie and shame real women for how they naturally look, saying we're just bitter and jealous, when we are actually just trying to tell them the truth. And then the cycle continues
It goes both ways, youd be shocked at the number of gurls who think that a guy who is 6 ft 5 in with abs and a 6 figure income is the norm...its toxic for all of humanity and the only way we stop it is putting the blame on the companies that push this bullshit, not the ppl caught up in it...
I really don’t comprehend why people can’t be like “oh btw i filter my pics or my videos”. I rarely do it but i have done it. But i am so honest with my followers and and disclose it on my stories.
i appreciate you for being honest with your followers ♡ but i really do think a lot of people just don't open up about that because they'd like for others to think that they look *that* good naturally. there's also still a lot of stigma surrounding plastic surgery and editing, so people would rather lie than admit they've gotten work done or that they edit their pictures/use filters (like,, consider the kardashians and ariana for this)
it’s good that you do that! the reason that most people don’t is because they’re insecure on how they look NATURALLY… so they want to trick people into thinking they have the body proportions of a literal cartoon.

@jadetea6112 there are many subsections of the fandom ares (there's a reason it's like half the site), and I admit I was on the fanfic/fanart area. Thank you! I've been on Tumblr since 2012 and I never came across any of the things she talks about in the video. All because I always followed fandom stuff and my dash was always filled with that. I feel like Salem is forgetting that Tumblr didn't have an algorithm like Tiktok or Instagram does. If you want to interact with certain content, you gotta look it up yourself.
I remember coming across “thinspo” posts and pro-ED/“ana” accounts when I was a really young teen on tumblr, even when I mostly used the site for fandom. Thankfully I had an faint idea that those posts and accounts were wrong, but I was most definitely obsessed with being thin at an age far too young and seeing that content definitely didn’t help :( Thanks for making a video about this, it needs to be said!
I was a victim of this community back in the day as well. My eating disorders and body dysmorphia started when I was 13 and didn’t really end until… well. I still have issues surrounding food and body image to this day
It’s also genuinely horrifying to see how algorithms support proana content. Back when I used tumblr a mutual of mine accidentally reblogged one thinspo post to their main and I interacted with it. After that, I kept getting recommended thinspo and it sent me into a deep rabbit hole. Luckily, I was able to drag myself out as I realized what exactly proana, thinspo, etc. really meant but it really is dangerous especially for young people using these platforms

Please talk about toxic Korean beauty standards becoming the new beauty standard. I've always noticed that the toxic Korean beauty standards is something aimed at a "dehumanized" image and more "impossible" to obtain. I'm afraid of what might happen if these standars spreads a little more to the world, because especially for women, these patterns refer to a childish/doll image.
You’re right! Because of trending of K-media (Music, TV, etc.,) around the world. Asian beauty trends have been trending heavily lately. It’s good Korean media/culture is getting its popularity, but not good that it’s toxic beauty standard is popular.

As someone who still uses tumblr (you will have to pry it from my cold dead hands), I do agree that TikTok is turning into tumblr 2.0, I've seen the exact same discourses, jokes, and scandals that we have gone through years ago re-created on that app. The only difference is that they display their faces behind these posts now, and it definitely amplifies the toxicity of it all.
I’ve deactivated my socials and it’s been months. Let me say this,it’s really an experience and I realised that people don’t know what’s real life anymore. As someone who’s skinny and gets skinny shamed for not having a big butt or being flat i felt terrified and terrible it also felt like as if I wasn’t desirable to be someone’s partner . But all I know is that atleast I’m a real person.

I would try to see if it was photoshopped but i literally couldn't tell so i just assumed it was wild genetics. I cant imagine what an incredibly impressionable young girl or even boy would think about themselves seeing this kind of stuff. beauty influencers are not r e a l, they're putting on whatever act gets the most likes. even as an adult its so hard to remember that
Honestly with the TikTok filters changing skin tone, it brought me back to Snapchat. I remember a picture I took (I'm sorta dark-skin, not that dark but not light-skin if that makes sense.) and I looked like my colours were super washed out. It almost looked like I was white. I've noticed that a lot of filters in apps such as TT, IG, and SC have this issue.
I remember so many years ago when I realised that I looked slightly thinner and lighter because of those SC filters! I was honestly so shocked because it was SUCH a subtle difference but it was enough to make you look a bit thinner. Once I saw that, I stopped using face filters. I only use colour filters if I ever feel like it lol. Amazing how these subtle things can subconsciously affect you so much.

If you're uncomfortable with your body just look at old paintings and sculptures trust me at some point in history you are absolutely gorgeous and still are. But what you'll also notice is how much the ideal body type changes, I'm shocked our society hasn't gotten whiplash from this.
So much anger is directed at the girls for editing their bodies but I think we ought to question the world we live in where the easiest claim to fame is fitting or exceeding the beauty standards
29:48 “It is just such a shame that we live in a society, where people who already look the beauty standard, still feel like they're not enough.” That was so powerful.
Even if people know it’s photoshop, it has fundamentally changed the beauty standard - including by those who yap about “you’re so dumb if you don’t know it’s photoshop.” And I’m the same as you. I can be conscious of photoshop and surgery and get I still find myself feeling pressured to use a filter myself because I’m so embarrassed by the way I look. It’s such a struggle to stay mindful of it AND completely block out the intrusive thoughts. No femme person will ever be truly liberated until beauty standards are eradicated entirely.
One of my mail coworkers sent me one of her tiktoks talking about how shes so pretty and he likes her body and unprofessionalism aside he didn't even freaking realize she's insanely edited and I told him and he got butthurt at me and I'm just?? It's so normalized for people to believe this and the standards for how woman look are always raising and at this point it's completely impossible without surgery or edits and it hurts so so many young girls
salem you're literally so strong for sitting there and talking about your experience with tumblr and it's issues after dealing with them yourself. So freaking proud of you
I don’t photoshop my pictures because I want to save my memories not a distorted image of what I looked like that one time in my mind . I want to be proud to show my kids what I actually looked like not a freaky filter on grandma
I was scrolling through TikTok yesterday and Eugenia Cooney popped up. I didn't even know she had an account and blocked her immediately. It's so hard to look at her, and I can't even imagine the effect she'll have on young impressionable people :/
26:14 “I’m not trying to hide anything lol” Even if she isn’t trying to hide the fact that she edits her body, by choosing not to disclose that she does, she’s doing just as much harm to young girls who believe that’s how she looks in real life. And even if she *did* disclose that in all the videos where she edits herself, it’s *still* harmful.
As some who has struggle with acne since I was 12 (im 20 now) and being super insecure about it these TikTok filters really make me wish I actually looked like them💔
"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" I was still saying that even when I was close to death through having a ED. It's awful, I learnt about it all at like 12/13 years old. Snapping a hair band on my wrist whenever I felt hungry, all the pictures of the skinny dying girls ect. Very dark time.
Just had a flashback to tumblr and how people would literally make their entire bio a long list of health conditions. It was so unhealthy!! It seemed like in my tumblr bubble at least the longer the list of mental health conditions was, the more clout someone had. The culture idealized being an unstable manic pixie dream girl. I never heard that term until like 2015 and then it was like woah, I see it
Just one thing I want to point out, Asian beauty standards for wanting to be white or paler doesn't necessarily have to do with colonization. Back in the day, peasants and the poor had to work in fields and so they would get very tanned. Thus being white or pale is associated with rich and elegance because the "whiter" upper class stayed indoors and didn't have to do exhausting labour in the fields. Asides from that, I really enjoy your thoughts and opinions on these topics! You always have something to bring to the table. Hope you get better soon! ❤️
That’s the case for South Asians who naturally have darker skin than East Asians. East Asians are naturally fair skinned and actually don’t get very tan.
As a southeast asian ( i'm indonesian ), i can confirm this. There's even a lot of whitening products going around in my country and people who had a darker skin rarely considered as attractive 🙃
@@MickeyAndMore It's the same case with East Asians as well. I'm Chinese and whenever I visit my family in China I'm always reminded on how being pale is pretty. Also if you just look at Kpop, being pale is definitely super ingrained in Korean beauty standards as well.
@@elw3075 but East Asians are naturally pale. It’s not like there are dark East Asians who are forced to bleach their skin in order to fit the standard (rarely). They are the “standard” for Asians.
@@MickeyAndMore East Asian's beauty standards is to be as snow white as possible, which is in comparison paler than the Southeast Asian beauty standard. So although we're considered "the standard" for Southeast Asians, East Asians have their own standards which is to be paler relative to the average East Asian. I also think one of the reasons why people think East Asians look pale is because of the white filter they put on TV programs, dramas and performances. You can notice this especially when you look at Kpop idols on Korea television vs on American television (ex. BTS)
I'm lucky that I never had body issues. I have no idea why, I just look at myself, and other people, and I can literally fall in love with how anybody looks. I just love bodies, if we're close enough I'll literally worship it. I LOVE HUMAN BODIES
if teenagers can recognize that Photoshopped videos are fake, that doesn’t stop them from comparing themselves. they recognize the beauty standard that they’re in competition with no matter how obviously fake it is.
THISSS! And i say this as an artist myself! Even if this content in question is just the artistic expression of these creators, we have to analyze why they all look so homogenous, and what standard is set. Art influences real life! And it shows the internal biases of the creator
Agreed. .. SSDD
EXACTLY bro i'll feel bad about myself after looking at a drawing of a character with the 'ideal' body lmao
Going to huge public water parks and seeing the vast variety of body types in different swim suits, just kicking around having fun, seriously helped my self image. It's healing to be out in the real world, seeing real bodies.
Exactly! Thin, large, chubby, thick, lanky, all bodies are beautiful and real!!
sad to think that when I was a child and would go to the beach (aka lake) with my family, I would see a wide range of bodies and would think literally nothing of it. I didn't see any of the "problematic" body parts that I can recognise now.
True, cause even if it's faked, it's still a fantasm (globally)
this is a good point. i have never worried about what my body looks like once i’m actually having fun at the pool. like i’m just worried about digging out my water slide wedgie 🤣
How did you already watch the video
I didn’t need to watch this video to write the comment.. I already know abt this trend and have been wanting to get this off my mind, I’m very glad Salem is covering this.
i actually think using body filters should be like...against the internet law or something.
It’s clear Sunny isn’t photoshopping for “cosplay” majority of the characters she cosplays aren’t curvy so there’s really no need to do it for “cosplay” she should just say “yeah i photoshop my body because this body is in and it’s what makes me money” like most of her followers are men, they won’t care that it’s fake
question is, why men like those unreal edited bodies?
She has literally said on multiple occasions that she photoshops her body because she likes doing it lmao stay mad
@@dragon1512 who said they were mad
@@dragon1512 why r u defending this shitty cosplayer that edits her body to get male attention lmaoo
@@dragon1512 That not a fun thing to do to yourself because it creates a false reality of yourself, therefore leads to mental health issues.
my mom said she was scrolling through instagram and eventually found herself looking at all these models. she said that it started to make her feel bad and she’s a grown, married woman, and that she can’t imagine how it makes a teenager feel.
This is literally why I don't have instagram, I go on for a second and I feel the worst i've felt in ages, lol.
And everyone wants to diminish my worries and say “it all depends on what you consume!!!”
@@mondaysandtuesdays6842 true, we just also have to consider how absurd it is that >>body types

@@xox6663 which is very weird because spongebob is clearly peak body goals like smh my head 😤😤
@@sarabeatriz5569 I mean how cool would it be to actually be able to wear square pants. Its evolution at its finest.
I hate all of this editing and photoshopping. Not only does it feed women's insecurities, but it also warps men's view of what a female body actually looks like. So many of them really do believe that these exaggerated, cartoonish body types are real and fuel the problem by thirsting over them.
This thoooooo
We should also hold those men accountable tho.
@@Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty I did by saying that men fuel this problem too
@@Suebee29 I meant by putting in the same effort that we do with women like in videos with the plastic surgery.
Makes me wonder how Gen Z is going to end up.
Beauty standered wise, it's definetly not going to be good. But what happens after?
That's a very famous quote though. The model in question has expressed regret for saying that, so yay bare minimum!
@@paulatamaramohamad5794 ahaha yeah true, It was just very popular on tumblr so that’s where I knew it from lol
Although ED tumblr is obviously not as active as it once was, I can confirm TikTok still supplies me with the content and I'm still struggling. It's making it hard to want to recover but I feel alone somehow when I can't physically see other people are like me.

that quote is very old.
It made me see beauty in all types of bodies, and I still see people through that lens.
Yes!! I just took a figure drawing class last year and it was so refreshing. I plan to take more. It helped to expand my idea of what beautiful people look like (hint: everyone becomes beautiful when you take the time to really appreciate a person for what they actually look like)
@@cr_96512 perfectly said💕
I don‘t have a tummie or rolls :/
Edit: Before anyone want‘s to attack me, the comment said everyone has a tummie and rolls, now it says so many people.
Imo a lot of "perfect" edits look weird. I'm not even just saying that to be nice or w/e, they look uncanny.
i be looking for something that changes the color of the sky and i find ones that give me unhealthily smooth skin
Filters like that make me feel so uncomfortable. It's very uncanny.
agreed girl. it’s so sad all these celebs, influencers, and models promote photoshop and filters to their audience. i believe it’s because they’re insecure themselves and nowadays when you post unedited pics THE REAL YOU people make rude unnecessary comments both from men and women and it’s almost like a way to mask the hate you will get if that makes sense. when in reality we all would respect and look up to them more if they would show there true selfs. it’s just scary most of us are insecure from comparing ourselves to someone’s “best self” when we never actually see behind the scenes of it all. it’s not reality. our generation needs more face to face contact and interactions instead of looking a someone through a photo and thinking “wow i wish i looked like that all the time” because all nomal human beings have traits like skin texture, cellulite, acne, body hair, stretch marks, hip dips, etc. that’s what makes us human i just wish people would realize how beautiful they actually are
I dont use filters on my photos because it's important to remember thst I'm beautiful and actually have pores
@Hunter Duncan wow I hope you're okay I can't imagine the strength you must have
That's how most bodybuilders usually say that it's looking great but feel shitty inside kind of lifestyle.

Social media is just a marketing and manipulation machine. Otherwise they wouldn’t be around for their main purpose: making money.
Im lucky to have born before social media became a thing .. i was SO unhappy about myself and i can't imagine what it would've been with so/me
It seems nobody can be happy with theirsleves when they consume a bit of the inernet :(.
It has nothing to do with colonization :>
it’s not that it has nothing to do with colonization, it NOT ONLY has to do with colonization
Thanks I was looking for that comment before commenting it myself. I actually studied Asian history at uni and it kinda annoy me when people say those standards are eurocentric when they existed before any contact with Europe
Saying that it has _nothing_ to do with colonisation is a bold face lie. It isn’t all about colonisation but it definitely has something to do with colonisation.
thank u for saying this !
speak for yourself lmfao... countries like the Philippines colorism 100% stems from colonization. Thats why half filipina half white actors get ALL the attention on screen and you barely see any dark skinned filipinos despite them being the majority among all filipinos.
stop ignoring the after effects of colonization.

Isnt it the same with makeup and plastic surgery though?
the fact that like 80% of all makeup filters on tiktok (especially the ones that go viral) change your features to look more Eurocentric and thinner, and tiktok doesn't do anything about it is so gross! Not only does it feed into these standards, but bs like that is so harmful for people with body dismorphia and ED's. I miss when tiktok only had a few makeup filters.

I will never understand why people wanna be normal tho, but i have odd maybe thats why.
TBH everybody has it its just that we don't normalize the normal things
Amen
I’m a millennial, and tumblr was very toxic and very dark. That’s why we went to Instagram. However, in a few years Instagram became just as dark and toxic. I gave up on social media a few months back and I’ve never felt better in my life. All social media is a popularity contest. You guys please, please, please stop comparing your body, and lifestyle because most of the time these people be fronting.
I remember that some people migrated towards Twitter as well. Tumblr was filled with special snowflakes 🥲
I used to be on Tumblr as well and I completely forgot about the thigh gap thing. I didn't even realize I still pay attention to it either.

Wow that's crazy, I've never heard of that!! I honestly don't know why "whiteness" or "lightness" is pushed as more desirable. I suppose white supremacy is rampant everywhere 🤷♀Even in the subconscious of other societies

Yeaaaa I'm Indian and I had seen videos like that and it just looked so fcked up honestly
Black fishing (or poc fishing) is not about becoming that race, it's about picking characteristics you like best and using them while maintaining your white privilege, it's about being poc adjacent rather than poc passing, putting poc features on a white face and just going that much far enough that you have the desirable features without looking poc, it's about cherry picking
(this is the general gist not a direct quote)
Yes, this makes sense.
I LOVE KHADIJA💅

@@Lunalla yes, i meant to express that when popularised by western media, it's publicised to incite the reader or viewer to CHANGE themselves.. with commending language ("GET YOUR SUMMER BODY ON" for example)
It's not that the beauty standards are wrong themselves.

Or at least it’s harder for them to not be on social media. I can’t imagine what that added reliance on it would do to your mental health. I could never, oof.

@@scarlet.priestess doesn’t matter cause white people pushed their European beauty standards on us everywhere so her little slip up isn’t that big of a deal when you step back and realize every group of POC today keep getting pushed European beauty standards onto us
@@Angel-jt2pl oh sure, the way that the only right way to be 'beautiful' currently is to bend and mask yourself to fit in within a set of very restrictive western ideals is terrible and needs a lot of unpacking.
You shouldn't speak for all Asian (especially east Asian) people because some of us are sick of non-Asians blatantly stating misinformation as fact about our history and culture, and that includes exactly how things and phenomena came to be. Uuuggh... my ex husband used to literally, after I told him models were retouched/ photoshopped (this was in the 2000s, so not as crazy..but in magazines) he actually said "no...they are just perfect." ...nobody is perfect.
This comment broke my heart. I hope things improve for you soon
@Elena Vargas @Valentine Lebeau
Neither of you are pathetic!

This is why I’m a fan of not caring what men think. If they wanna be alone, that’s on them
