    Honestly I think all of this situation just proves how, no matter how trivial the drama may be, women will ALWAYS be held to a higher standard than men in the beauty community.
    Cancel culture does not exist for men, just like it clearly doesn’t exist for Jeffree Star, James Charles, Shane Dawson, Manny MUA, etc.
    Think of all the women who have been cancelled- there are a lot less who have been able to claw their way back to popularity again.
    Edit: also 🐣🦆

    The point about non-white creators not getting the same amount of support/forgiveness as white creators is incredibly valid and I think there's another piece that adds in: The way males in female dominated spaces are treated. I work in a female dominated industry and males are treated like magical unicorns that can do no wrong. I see the same thing in the beauty industry, especially with influencers.

  • @ornelathieba3261
    @ornelathieba3261 ปีที่แล้ว +270

    Hypothesis: these fan bases turn a blind eye because they see their faves as indispensable to internet culture. Internet culture thrives on drama, it keeps the momentum going. Jeffree coming back isn't really about makeup, it's about the him feeding people's insatiable appetite for drama. People who cause this amount of chaos on the internet cannot be truly cancelled, they will resurface at some point. It doesn't matter whether we like them or not. Ultimately, all influencers become a commodity on the internet. Some people understand this and use it to their advantage at the risk of their 'public image', they realize that they don't have to take accountability irl as long as their online persona makes it seem like they do. I honestly feel like minorities, neuro-divergent individuals, POC, etc., should protect their vulnerability online as much as possible, bc few are the spaces that are actually safe.

    I think it's a mix of different problems - the more time has passed, the more people either forget or its impact is minimised in public memory, and second the fact that Star's problematic behaviour doesn't directly impact a majority of people but rather depends on people having empathy continuously in order to even understand why it's problematic, whereas Mikaela's problematic behaviour doesn't NEED empathy from viewers, everyone can just feel directly insulted that she tried to pull one over them. It's interesting how human behaviour is influenced by feeling personally attacked vs having to put yourself in someone else's shoes consistently.
    I noticed this with another issue but in a very different way - more female TH-camrs showed truly passionate responses and anger at the anti-abortion changes in recent past (the Roe v Wade) because it directly affects us, and the same people (who ARE nice and good and aren't being malicious) spoke up against racism, but in a very subdued, speaking-the-liberal-talking-points kind of way, like of course they were sincere in their support, but you also got a sense of detachment due to their distance from the issue. Such a huge contrast between what felt like a true issue vs something that of course they champion but is not personal to them.
    All this to say, seems like typical human behaviour 😅

    • @sindhusanthanakrishnan5465
      @sindhusanthanakrishnan5465 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Another thing I thought of - villainy can be forgiven (or forgotten) but affecting someone's pride or ego or being irritating in a regular way is somehow hated more. Think Voldemort Vs Umbridge.
      I really think swindlers will be hated more on a personal level than mass murderers because something about being fooled will hit more people more personally and lead to a more visceral and gut based reaction. I could be completely, absolutely wrong about this though lol.

    This video is such a breath of fresh air. Canceling influencers can be such a flippant and performative thing when it becomes this barrage of shitting on creators for such minor things and never ever letting things go. People DO change!! Calling it “Selective outrage culture” really hits the nail on its head. It’s so inconsistent and it seriously harms smaller creators who are genuinely just trying their best and are not trying to hurt anyone.
    I also appreciate your take on accepting apologies. It’s how I feel about apologies as well, because I know at least a few examples of people who seem great at taking accountability and apologizing for their behavior or for some type of outburst, but then I find that their words are empty because they continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. It’s like they think that as long as they’re self aware a light to say sorry because they know they acted out, they think it gives them a clean slate every time. But when this becomes a pattern, you have to actively make a change and work on being better in order for people to truly take your apologies seriously.

I work with hundreds of artists every year as the department head of Artist Alley at a few anime conventions and I keep seeing this small artists that are a delight to work with every year with fantastic merchandise that will get chased down and verbally harassed by attendees because TikTok has decided that the characters, ships, and/or series that they make merchandise for is "problematic". There was even one time where we had to get an attendee banned and escorted off property by security because they were making death threats at one of our artists over a Genshin Impact print.

    Honestly, i think there is a difference between loreal putting an ad that is photoshopped out and them hiring a tiktoker who lies in her ad for them. Because we know and expect that big companies lie in their ads. We know that. But the tiktoker on the other hand is only hired in the first place bc they have a relationship and trust built w an audience, so when they lie, it breaks that trust. Like when we see a magazine ad, we're like ok that's obviously fake, but when an influencer u follow and like says something, ur not expecting them to lie. So when they do lie it's just like okay what's the point of ur tt page then? I understand that an influencer is a brand too, but if their brand is built on trust w their audience, i think it's fair for that audience to be shook when they find out the influencer is a liar

    Hi 🦆I’m a somewhat new viewer, but binged a pretty good chunk of your videos. Even though I don’t care about a lot of topics your videos are based on (mostly bc I’m uninformed about most of the scandals out there in the internet), I absolutely love the way you approach them. I love your messages and your wisdom (to be honest, I sometimes tear up while listening to you).
    Edit: To elaborate, your approach to the commentary really touches me, as you don’t become personal about this and breakdown these situations as a set of systemic human behaviour. In the end, it’s not about certain people but about us as humans.

    I had *no idea* how much Mikayla actually edits her content until I saw the video Fenty Beauty uploaded of Mikayla getting her makeup done, and it legit hardly even looks like the Mikayla you see online. I've never watched her content, but ive always heard that she always claims to be body positive but she edits the hell out of her photos, but I didn't know she was editing her content as drastically as she does. It's not surprising at all that she lied about the effect of a product she's trying to sell, she doesn't seem to be a very genuine person.

  • @safiaa1902
    @safiaa1902 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    i think one of the reasons why Mikayla gained such a big following was because her reviews seemed authentic. she really made her viewers feel like they could trust her to show whether products and makeup hacks worked. since her viewers trusted that she was not like the "other" influencers, her lying (and continuing to do so) was a shock

  • @naevisx
    @naevisx ปีที่แล้ว +49

    Although I agree that we should keep the same energy for the companies and their photoshopped commercials, I feel like... most of us know that they do that already, so we take it with a grain of salt. The issue with Mikayla is that as far as I know, she was seen as relatable, and people trusted her reviews. So for her to be lying like this must feel like a punch in the face for the people that trusted her and bought makeup based on if she recommends it or not.
    I don't use makeup and I don't follow influencers, so maybe I'm wrong but that's how it looks like to me.
    edit: not me posting this comment right before I heard Salem say almost the same thing in the video lmao

    The answer to why some people get called out and others don’t is simple confirmation bias: they’ve been a fan of someone for such a long time that they would have to admit to themselves they were supporting someone problematic and toxic the whole time and many if not most people are unwilling to accept responsibility for having made a mistake and instead double down to keep their fragile psyche from collapsing

    I have no horse in this race, only a 🦆 I actually like to watch your videos while crocheting and I enjoy listening to your beautiful voice, Salem. My opinion on cancel culture is that if it's big enough to be called a culture, it's not going to "cancel" anything. As you said very well, it's all about outrage. When I encounter something I dislike, I forget about it. If it's a nasty person, they are not getting my attention. The end. But the people who get publicly outraged get something out of that, which in many cases is attention that they possibly lack in their real life, sadly. The "hurt people hurt people" adage applies to more than influencers...

    I think that people can change, for better or for worse, and obviously people can apologize and truly mean it… but at the same time people still need to be held accountable for their actions. You can’t take things you did / said back, and even if you apologize and mean it, you’ve still hurt someone, and it’s important to make sure people aren’t just let off without any repercussions (wow this got long fast 🦆)

    I think people expect influencers to be more “real” than a standard ad for a product. More people are skeptical of the genuine nature of ad photos and videos, they expect them to be fake.
    I think people are influenced by both influencers and standard ads, and i think it’s bad for both to be fake, but in the end I think the uproar comes from people believing that their online bestie isn’t lying to them about “this new product they’re just obsessed with”.
    Imagine the difference between being lied to by your best friend or your principal at school/CEO of your job. There’s like a sense of betrayal I think.
    These are just my opinions, please let me know what you think if I said something wrong 😅

    You are so valid for being worried about talking about Jeffree Star in a video... I can't remember when it was, 2019 maybe, I wrote in a comment on Facebook about criticizing Jeffree and his racist antics and had his fans coming at me calling me a Karen and saying that they truly don't care about the racism. Like grown women, married with children, saying I'm the bad guy for bringing up the bad things he's done and for not forgiving him just because he put out an eyeshadow pallet they like. Just truly unhinged things because I said (paraphrasing) "This guy did racist things, so I will never buy his makeup products because I don't support racists."

  • @thegagabouche

    🦆I also appreciated Jenna Marbles approach because instead of just watching/hearing about the other creators problematic incidents and ignoring or letting it come up on her, she actively took a look at her past content and said herself "this wasn't okay". That's the start of taking accountability so we know she has the range to change lol the others acted real shocked that it existed/was wrong made some type of apology and hoped things keep blowing over if its brought up. Also some people dont have strong discernment to make a "cancellation". If ion like you i wont look you up, unfollowed, no views/not buying your product. Some can't, they feel soooo stuck on the influencer/celeb and dont realize you invest in their worth problematic or not and I want to know that my money amd views won't go to furthering your racism, politics, bad habits, -isms...
