Disclaimer: I'm not an experience mechanic. It's my understanding that you just need to unload the car's suspension so that the spring is not under weight when removed and that the Quick-Strut used here comes with the new spring already installed. Some struts are just the shock in the middle with the spring supports and brackets, and you have to compress and remove the original spring and re-install that for re-use. That's where the spring compressor comes in, but if you are doing a whole part swap as in the video, it's ok. Just be careful, those springs are incredibly strong as they can hold up a car... I've hear stories of them going through roofs and shooting things and parts at breakneck speeds when they rapidly unload.

My struts are starting to go, but I was to scared to practice on mine. I practiced on a Mazda. Turns out my neighbor didn't like me practicing on his car at 315 in the morning !

I am nearing the end of my lease on my Audi, and I'm heading in a very different career path starting with a one year internship. I can't afford a new car now and we've had an old 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser that has just been sitting in our driveway, left neglected. Ahhh, I needed this video a couple of months ago! My car started clunking when I'd drive over any bumps in the road... not good! Took it straight to a mechanic and he tells me both front struts are bust and need replacing- fine. An hour or so in he rang to tell me he can't unscrew one of the bolts on the strut tower, that he'd have to cut it off to get it out and it would be an extra £80 to get in a new bolt!! That job lot cost me near £400. No way near confident enough yet to tackle this stuff on my car, but even just understanding what the heck is happening is a better position to be in. Thank you so much Chris for sharing your knowledge, you make it so much less intimidating!! Loving your channel.
Yea.. It is quite educational, even though you are not gonna do this by yourself, you can still check the condition of the suspension and sway bar before taking it to the mechanic, so you will know if the mechanic has replaced ALL the required parts or just scam your money lol

Be warned when attempting this yourself, it could be as simple as shown in the video, but if your car is front/4 wheel drive there is a good posibity that after disconnecting the wheel hub assembly from the strut that you will pop your cv from the gearbox and lose a bunch of oil. To avoid this, make sure that you undo the wheel hub nut before starting the work and remove the cv shaft from the wheel as well as the tie rod
The first time I replaced my struts I actually managed to seperate the inner cv joints on both sides because I failed to do what you mentioned. And they weren't the cv joints that consist out of 3 rollers and a sleeve, they were the type of cv joints that consist out of a sleeve, a cage and 6 metal balls. I did not have fun spending 5 hours of solving those greasy puzzles. So this is great advice, you will definitely mess up if you don't remove the hub nuts/bolts and it will cost you a lot more time and money in the end to get your car to drive again

Man this is perfect for refreshing the brain after ten years being a single dad. I always hit this channel for a refresher and im usually right but there is always something he shows me that i would've done the hard way. honestly man you passing on mechanical know how, and your format is great! kids could be playing minecraft one day, find your vids and be working on their car that same night, providing they or their dad has one in the garage to be worked on. Another great video Chris. I've done this a couple times in the past where I thought I'd save some money by just buying the strut and reusing the old springs but quickly found out that it's not worth it. The complete assembly (springs already on) aren't that much more expensive, save a shit load of time and you don't have to worry about having your face ripped off if the spring compressor slips off the spring while taking it off or putting it on. Just one of those things where spending a few bucks more is really worth it.
Yeah, the mechanic at firestone told me he's going to replace all four shocks then calls me back telling me he needs to replace the struts too and it's going to be another 800 bucks. I said, nah, put it back together and I'll figure it out. lol Rear shocks and two front complete strut assy. are 330 bucks total. I could not justify 500 bucks for a couple hours of work, max.

A lot of arrogant techs out there will torque your wheels down with an impact gun. Ignoring a torque wrench because "well the wheels are too tight being over specification, they won't fall off" Except it creates massive runout on your rotors and wastes your money.
they did to one of my tires and it was loose at sears auto place, have my struts replaced at Toyota dealership they messed up my alignment plus I ended up with crooked steering wheel, but that was when I never wanted to touch my car own my own and trusted toyota dealership and probably sears too...you said it well though :)

Thanks for the tutorial man. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 and this video made it so easy to replace my front struts. It took me a couple of hours to do but if I were to do it again I could probably pull it off in 25 or 30 minutes. I learn so much with each of your videos and for that I thank you!
Thanks for the simple explanations and tips to make it easier, such as turning the steering to help reach the bolts or using the jack to push the knuckle back into the strut. Small tips like that save a lot of time. I changed the strut on a 2006 Volvo S40 this weekend and it took about an hour, without any issues, which was better than I expected since it was my first time changing a strut on any car.
Most experienced mechanics have learned to only replace the strut rather than use a full "quick-strut" drop-in assembly. Turns out these "quick-struts" almost never match up perfectly to their OE counterpart. Things will be different whether its the spring rate, spring material, strut mount material, strut mount bearing, etc. On almost every car that I have installed a pair or set of "quick-struts", the owner reports back that the car is riding rougher or not handling like it used to. That is why it is recommended to get a pair of spring compressors and only replace the strut or, if you really want to go the drop-in route, purchase your full strut assembly from the car's manufacturer.
Monroe anything are absolute junk, and most mechanics know this ahead of time. Unfortunately a lot of franchise shops like pepboys for instance sell monroe exclusively. Of the dozen or so car's that I have personally used Monroe products on, every one of them has failed within a year. Monroe Economatics on a chevy cobalt, squeak during the winter months and strut bearings failed within 6 months of use, monroe sensatrac struts, blown out and leaking in less than a year. The list goes on. From now on I use Bilstein and Sach's exclusively on any strut/shock replacement unless specifically requested by the customer that they want Monroe, at which case I refuse to warranty them for any reason whatsoever. I used them probably about 10 years ago on my own personal vehicle and the alignment shop actually laughed and asked how bad the ride was on them. lol
did alot of research and when shopping around for some strusts, was going to buy the cheapest quick assembly i could, glad i read some reviews and comments like yours before my purchase. ended up buying kyb excel g struts. going to have to do more work to move the springs tophats etc's over but im excited to learn and try em out
Lol. I am about to replace struts on my Accord and also Monroe was number one choice after quick search on internet. Then I went a little bit deeper in web and found that it is all marketing and they are actually crap. Started looking for another brands and found that people are actually happy with KYB and some other brand that has the name similar to some female's name, I forgot what it was. So... I bought KYB's strut-plus. Also I would like to mention that sometimes it is better to replace shocks only but in case of damaged shock + strut mount, plus torn rubber "stoppers" or how you call them - it is simply easier to buy the whole strut assembly. Sure, genuine parts are always better but they cost twice or even three times more than some aftermarket ones. Plus sometimes aftermarket parts may give more stiffness that people want for their cars. As I understood from comments and reviews KYB strut-plus for my Accord is exactly the case and I am glad to that :) coz my car is like a jelly.

I just replaced this style strut on my 2013 Ford C-Max this weekend. One thing I was trying to figure out is how to get the strut back in the knuckle after the old one came out. Mine wasn't rusted but it was a lot tighter to come out than this video and it took a lot of hammering. Then trying to get the new strut back on, it wouldn't go on it's own. What I ended up doing is putting the strut bolt for the knuckle in the other way around (starting from the threaded end) and putting a piece of metal in the way so it doesn't go through the hole on the other end. That widens the gap for the strut to get in much easier. Then I did the same on the other side for removal as well and it made it much easier to remove the old strut. I found out there's a tool for this purpose, but I didn't have it. so this method worked great. Just for anyone that might has struggled getting the strut off or on the knuckle. On my C-Max I also had to remove the wiper cowl, wiper assembly, and air box to get to the strut tower bolts which was a bit of a pain. Some cars have them way down underneath. I didn't expect that as I had only ever changed struts on a car that was more accessible like this Mazda 3.
Replacing the strut assemblies on my 2000 neon was the first project I took on when it comes to cars. I think I did that in 2011/2012. I replaced a lot on that car, learned a lot from that. I sort of miss that car lol.
Thanks, ChrisFix man, for a great demonstration on how to replace struts! Obviously, the first time around always takes much, much longer than we think, or dare to think. But after having successfully completed one or two such jobs, the average backyard mechanic can at least move -- perhaps significantly -- in the direction of the ease and fluidity that you display for "video purposes." Great channel, as your subscriber count obviously confirms "in the millions!"

I change all my parts just to do it now even if it doesn't need it when I buy an older car that I know looks like it's about going out changed two of my cars complete suspension and a lot of other parts thanks Chris

And after installing you'll probably need to get the front-end aligned. Also, I'd advise getting the workshop manual for your car to find out the correct procedure as it might be different to the car in this video.

Thanks for this video man. I was recently shown and told that all my struts are leaking and are very close to blowing out. The guys at midas quoted me $1600 to replace both the front and back pairs of struts. I’m a broke college student and there’s no way i could afford that. It got me thinking that I should just try and do it myself. I was able to find some nice kyb struts and all the tools I needed for about $850. Everything worked out good and I actually had a lot of fun doing this myself. I’ve never worked on my car before but I’m definitely going to do everything myself from now on.

+Dolo Squad You can do it man! There are three things that make the job so easy. 1. The right tools for the job 2.. The little tips and tricks I show like using penetrating fluid make all the difference 3. Understanding the job at hand and what needs to be done which is really simple Sometimes things dont go as planned but then you need to have the right tools to solve the problem. If the sway bar end link doesnt come off, get a vice grips and impact gun and if that doesnt work, cut it out with a cutoff wheel!
My non-DIY self did the front struts today. Will tackle the rear struts next weekend. $300 for parts or $2,000 for a mechanic? No brainer. Thanks, Chris Fix!

It's cool that your learning this in advance of driving and owning a car. Tastes in cars varies and there are tons of feelings and opinions, but from a master technician standpoint, I will say that I look now, at cars that last and are easy to work on. I have found that Toyota cars are great in both respects, but Honda is also good. Fixing something in a Toyota will give a lot of satisfaction with very little frustration. Whatever you get, enjoy it and stay safe when you fix it.

Yes, he always makes it look really easy. But I still know that I'll probably have one heck of a time trying to do it myself, and that's what worries me.
If you don't replace them in pairs, then you'll end up having a car that looks like Rasputia is driving it. LOL You can also experience clicking sounds when driving straight over bumps if the upper bushing/bolts are worn or loose.
@@chrisfix hope you can read this! Hi Chris, tried to replace the struts on my Windstar 2000, it has been an adventure! I hope you can help! While installing the new one I realized that the distance (new strut) between the hole for the sway bar and the eyelet hole where the knuckle bolt drives in is about 6 in. while on the old strut is 5.5 in. I tried to install it but it was not possible for 2 reasons; 1- the sway bar was 0.5 in. shorter and the knuckle would hit the eyelet welding. Well, I thought the part was wrong, they checked if the p/n was right and shipped me another set, but same problem. So I decided to check with Autoparts (local) and they had a different brand but it was exactly the same as the other brand. I tried to re-install it thinking I could have made a mistake but no, no mistake, but I took lots of pictures to show the problems (I cannot attach them here). I tried a mechanic, the local parts shop and the one online, nobody can figure it out. Have you ever had an issue like this? Thanks for any help/suggestion you might have, Carlo
+Juriaan Tolkamp It's just like repairing any wood. Sand the scratches out, smooth it out with fine sandpaper, and stain the wood. Add some of that clear coat stuff over it to give it a shiny look if you want. In wood, you either need to sand the scratches out, or they do sell wood putty for holes and really deep scratches.
I'm told I need struts...this was a fantastic explanation; I'd never be able to do this myself, but now I have a very good idea of what's going on. Thanks for your clear explanation!

If you just buy the struts by themselves, yes. However, it's a whole lot safer and quicker plus cheaper just to buy the whole strut complete! Believe me, what would cost twice more in parts and 2 hours per side would only cost half and around 45 minutes to install!

Yea.. It is quite educational, even though you are not gonna do this by yourself, you can still check the condition of the suspension and sway bar before taking it to the mechanic, so you will know if the mechanic has replaced ALL the required parts or just scam your money lol

Be warned when attempting this yourself, it could be as simple as shown in the video, but if your car is front/4 wheel drive there is a good posibity that after disconnecting the wheel hub assembly from the strut that you will pop your cv from the gearbox and lose a bunch of oil. To avoid this, make sure that you undo the wheel hub nut before starting the work and remove the cv shaft from the wheel as well as the tie rod

The first time I replaced my struts I actually managed to seperate the inner cv joints on both sides because I failed to do what you mentioned. And they weren't the cv joints that consist out of 3 rollers and a sleeve, they were the type of cv joints that consist out of a sleeve, a cage and 6 metal balls. I did not have fun spending 5 hours of solving those greasy puzzles. So this is great advice, you will definitely mess up if you don't remove the hub nuts/bolts and it will cost you a lot more time and money in the end to get your car to drive again

Another great video Chris. I've done this a couple times in the past where I thought I'd save some money by just buying the strut and reusing the old springs but quickly found out that it's not worth it. The complete assembly (springs already on) aren't that much more expensive, save a shit load of time and you don't have to worry about having your face ripped off if the spring compressor slips off the spring while taking it off or putting it on. Just one of those things where spending a few bucks more is really worth it.
Yeah, the mechanic at firestone told me he's going to replace all four shocks then calls me back telling me he needs to replace the struts too and it's going to be another 800 bucks. I said, nah, put it back together and I'll figure it out. lol Rear shocks and two front complete strut assy. are 330 bucks total. I could not justify 500 bucks for a couple hours of work, max.

Properly calibrated torque wrenches and a breaker bar are two must haves for any technician. It's unsafe to ignore factory specifications.
A lot of arrogant techs out there will torque your wheels down with an impact gun. Ignoring a torque wrench because "well the wheels are too tight being over specification, they won't fall off"
Except it creates massive runout on your rotors and wastes your money.

Thanks for the tutorial man. I have a 2010 Mazda 3 and this video made it so easy to replace my front struts. It took me a couple of hours to do but if I were to do it again I could probably pull it off in 25 or 30 minutes. I learn so much with each of your videos and for that I thank you!
Thanks for the simple explanations and tips to make it easier, such as turning the steering to help reach the bolts or using the jack to push the knuckle back into the strut. Small tips like that save a lot of time. I changed the strut on a 2006 Volvo S40 this weekend and it took about an hour, without any issues, which was better than I expected since it was my first time changing a strut on any car.
Was changing the strut similar to what he did in this video?
Most experienced mechanics have learned to only replace the strut rather than use a full "quick-strut" drop-in assembly. Turns out these "quick-struts" almost never match up perfectly to their OE counterpart. Things will be different whether its the spring rate, spring material, strut mount material, strut mount bearing, etc. On almost every car that I have installed a pair or set of "quick-struts", the owner reports back that the car is riding rougher or not handling like it used to. That is why it is recommended to get a pair of spring compressors and only replace the strut or, if you really want to go the drop-in route, purchase your full strut assembly from the car's manufacturer.
Monroe anything are absolute junk, and most mechanics know this ahead of time. Unfortunately a lot of franchise shops like pepboys for instance sell monroe exclusively. Of the dozen or so car's that I have personally used Monroe products on, every one of them has failed within a year. Monroe Economatics on a chevy cobalt, squeak during the winter months and strut bearings failed within 6 months of use, monroe sensatrac struts, blown out and leaking in less than a year. The list goes on. From now on I use Bilstein and Sach's exclusively on any strut/shock replacement unless specifically requested by the customer that they want Monroe, at which case I refuse to warranty them for any reason whatsoever. I used them probably about 10 years ago on my own personal vehicle and the alignment shop actually laughed and asked how bad the ride was on them. lol
did alot of research and when shopping around for some strusts, was going to buy the cheapest quick assembly i could, glad i read some reviews and comments like yours before my purchase. ended up buying kyb excel g struts. going to have to do more work to move the springs tophats etc's over but im excited to learn and try em out
@@silosis KYB also sells "StrutPlus" which is their version of a loaded strut. I've had great results with them.
Lol. I am about to replace struts on my Accord and also Monroe was number one choice after quick search on internet. Then I went a little bit deeper in web and found that it is all marketing and they are actually crap. Started looking for another brands and found that people are actually happy with KYB and some other brand that has the name similar to some female's name, I forgot what it was.
So... I bought KYB's strut-plus.
Also I would like to mention that sometimes it is better to replace shocks only but in case of damaged shock + strut mount, plus torn rubber "stoppers" or how you call them - it is simply easier to buy the whole strut assembly.
Sure, genuine parts are always better but they cost twice or even three times more than some aftermarket ones. Plus sometimes aftermarket parts may give more stiffness that people want for their cars. As I understood from comments and reviews KYB strut-plus for my Accord is exactly the case and I am glad to that :) coz my car is like a jelly.
Agree. I did some research for Volvos and found that Sachs is the OEM supplier. I was easily able to find struts and they ride like OEM.

I just replaced this style strut on my 2013 Ford C-Max this weekend. One thing I was trying to figure out is how to get the strut back in the knuckle after the old one came out. Mine wasn't rusted but it was a lot tighter to come out than this video and it took a lot of hammering. Then trying to get the new strut back on, it wouldn't go on it's own. What I ended up doing is putting the strut bolt for the knuckle in the other way around (starting from the threaded end) and putting a piece of metal in the way so it doesn't go through the hole on the other end. That widens the gap for the strut to get in much easier. Then I did the same on the other side for removal as well and it made it much easier to remove the old strut. I found out there's a tool for this purpose, but I didn't have it. so this method worked great. Just for anyone that might has struggled getting the strut off or on the knuckle.
On my C-Max I also had to remove the wiper cowl, wiper assembly, and air box to get to the strut tower bolts which was a bit of a pain. Some cars have them way down underneath. I didn't expect that as I had only ever changed struts on a car that was more accessible like this Mazda 3.
Replacing the strut assemblies on my 2000 neon was the first project I took on when it comes to cars. I think I did that in 2011/2012. I replaced a lot on that car, learned a lot from that. I sort of miss that car lol.

And after installing you'll probably need to get the front-end aligned. Also, I'd advise getting the workshop manual for your car to find out the correct procedure as it might be different to the car in this video.

Thanks for this video man. I was recently shown and told that all my struts are leaking and are very close to blowing out. The guys at midas quoted me $1600 to replace both the front and back pairs of struts. I’m a broke college student and there’s no way i could afford that. It got me thinking that I should just try and do it myself. I was able to find some nice kyb struts and all the tools I needed for about $850. Everything worked out good and I actually had a lot of fun doing this myself. I’ve never worked on my car before but I’m definitely going to do everything myself from now on.

1. The right tools for the job
2.. The little tips and tricks I show like using penetrating fluid make all the difference
3. Understanding the job at hand and what needs to be done which is really simple
Sometimes things dont go as planned but then you need to have the right tools to solve the problem. If the sway bar end link doesnt come off, get a vice grips and impact gun and if that doesnt work, cut it out with a cutoff wheel!

It's cool that your learning this in advance of driving and owning a car. Tastes in cars varies and there are tons of feelings and opinions, but from a master technician standpoint, I will say that I look now, at cars that last and are easy to work on. I have found that Toyota cars are great in both respects, but Honda is also good. Fixing something in a Toyota will give a lot of satisfaction with very little frustration. Whatever you get, enjoy it and stay safe when you fix it.

Yes, he always makes it look really easy. But I still know that I'll probably have one heck of a time trying to do it myself, and that's what worries me.
If you don't replace them in pairs, then you'll end up having a car that looks like Rasputia is driving it. LOL You can also experience clicking sounds when driving straight over bumps if the upper bushing/bolts are worn or loose.

@@chrisfix hope you can read this! Hi Chris, tried to replace the struts on my Windstar 2000, it has been an adventure! I hope you can help! While installing the new one I realized that the distance (new strut) between the hole for the sway bar and the eyelet hole where the knuckle bolt drives in is about 6 in. while on the old strut is 5.5 in. I tried to install it but it was not possible for 2 reasons; 1- the sway bar was 0.5 in. shorter and the knuckle would hit the eyelet welding. Well, I thought the part was wrong, they checked if the p/n was right and shipped me another set, but same problem. So I decided to check with Autoparts (local) and they had a different brand but it was exactly the same as the other brand. I tried to re-install it thinking I could have made a mistake but no, no mistake, but I took lots of pictures to show the problems (I cannot attach them here). I tried a mechanic, the local parts shop and the one online, nobody can figure it out. Have you ever had an issue like this? Thanks for any help/suggestion you might have, Carlo

+Juriaan Tolkamp It's just like repairing any wood. Sand the scratches out, smooth it out with fine sandpaper, and stain the wood. Add some of that clear coat stuff over it to give it a shiny look if you want. In wood, you either need to sand the scratches out, or they do sell wood putty for holes and really deep scratches.

Struts dont always come with a new spring, you should show how to mount the spring on the strut.

Not if you can compress the springs properly, just compress the new spring on, and assemble it as it was :)
If you just buy the struts by themselves, yes. However, it's a whole lot safer and quicker plus cheaper just to buy the whole strut complete! Believe me, what would cost twice more in parts and 2 hours per side would only cost half and around 45 minutes to install!

If it's too tight, a little penetrating fluid never hurts. Then you can get the nut off easily.

Hey Chris, every time I go into dips or go over bumps my car makes a clunking like noise. Could it be that my struts are bad??
Clunk sounds could be bad ball joints or worn out rubber bushings on the control arm.
