The negative self talk portion was so spot on. I’ve noticed that if I am frustrated or upset about anything (usually negative self talk is involved), it’ll come across in the video I’m making, so it’s so important to approach filming with the mindset of just having fun and rolling with the punches. Another great video Nick!

I just started about 6 weeks ago. If I’m honest I would say that I did not WANT to be in a video, because the thought made me ill. I’ve been on a few news shows about a book my husband and I wrote, and I hated every minute (being on camera) and wouldn’t even watch it. But I want to share the things I love to do and I want to learn video (I’m a photographer). The big surprise for me, after putting out 7 videos, is that it has helped tremendously with all of that. It’s helped me to stop being so critical of myself! It’s getting easier and the critical voice is getting quieter.

This is great! For my first 10 videos I was trying to be a perfectionist and so I was planning everything out, to the point I was scripting every little thing. I was worried because the authentic me is kind of awkward, but it was way too frustrating to keep up with. The past few videos I've made, I have tried to let my true self show through and not worry about scripting or what people will think of me. I have already felt such a huge difference. Thanks for the great video, Nick!

  • @MagicPrepper
    @MagicPrepper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great tips Nick as usual. In the beginning, you tend to emulate those who are successful in order to move in that same direction. But, after your first "100 crappy videos" you get your own on screen personality that starts to become more natural and a part of who you are. Then, people seem to grab on to that. It's not always about having better content. If people like you, they will support you. And people like people who are themselves.

Hey Nick! I've been doing TH-cam for over a year now, and I just hit over 2500 subscribers the other day. And I need to thank you because you are partly responsible for that. I've watched a ton of your videos and they have really helped me not only improve my channel, but help to get me over those slumps where I'm being really hard on myself
And on being yourself that is something I've been trying my hardest to do since day one, and a lot of what you've said definitely makes sense. And it was so refreshing to hear that you have a whole "routine" or "ritual" that you do before recording because I am very much the same way. Sometimes I can jump right into filming but other times it takes a bit of work to get over the nerves and to feel like myself
As always thanks for the great videos!

I have been true to myself and honest. Thanks Nick for putting this out as a reminder to stay true to myself and for all the niche TH-camrs who could benefit. I think most of my focus is accedemic and science related. I have recently been involved in some very fruitful outreach. Despite having under 500 Subscribers I have some extremely great opportunities that I can't say too much about but it doesn't always have to be a monsterously large following to have massive doors open for you. I like your stuff and It has helped me make changes that have been helpful. Including contacts links etcetera.

Whatstheword, personable, engaging, making every video feel like a personal consultation, edited out short pauses, never loosing eye contact, great speaker, great salesperson, great timing with editing and subtle intentional comedy, but staying serious, I mean gees is that all workable skills or an advantage by personality type? You are a PRO, and I cant recall anyone else on youtube being so Could Work On TV professional. Most channels, even big ones, lack the tight editing skills, THEY should be watching you too.

When I worked for a cable company in the repair department on the phone assisting clients that called in, I started out using a slightly, what I considered, professional voice when on the phone. After about a week I got a sore throat. I realized I was straining my vocal cords so I stopped "trying" to be professional and simply spoke in my normal voice and did my job. My sore throat recovered immediately.
I've never forgotten that lesson. It's like that with this too. Not everyone can keep up a facade forever. So, start out being you. It's less painful in the long run. 😆

This is a great topic, Nick. Before I started a YT channel I was a public speaker for 30 years. I remember wrestling with the temptation to imitate other speakers that I looked up to when I first started. The quality of my speaking didn't really improve until I learned to relax and be myself. I was able to bring that with me to YT. Those without a public speaking background have to learn that art.

Such sage advice right here, I loved every second of it! So obvious, but also for some reason (at least for me) so hard to own. This may be the ONE thing that has been killing my content in my channel, the lack of me just being me more consistently. The point of "comparing yourself to others": guilty. I modelled the format of my content after some others that to be honest just doesnt fit my personality. This will be a point of improvement going forward. I really enjoy watching your content, very helpful, and very authentic.

Hi Nick- older TH-camr here. I don’t really leave these kinds of comments often but I wanted to say that your channel is one that has actually given me the courage to start a TH-cam channel. At the moment it’s still in the infancy stage despite my having started it a few years ago. Not really spent much time or effort in building it. But recently my husband and I have decided to try and put more effort in to building it up. We are older, retired and live in rural Japan. We have a bit more time now. The most difficult part was thinking about how we should “be”. This video was really helpful because I think we should just be ourselves. If people want to watch our content- fine. If not…that’s okay too. There seems to be such a race on TH-cam to gain the most followers or be TH-cam stars. Suddenly I just … exhaled and thought- let’s just enjoy sharing life with others. Thanks for the content you share.

Very good tips and thoughts as usual Nick! And it can be really hard to balance - 'be yourself' with also 'growing/developing' and not see it as a bad thing - just seeing it as testing different paths a bit. Nothing wrong with testing something and then taking steps back cause it wasn't working for you. Like charisma for example - it took me years in my life to grow and get more comfortable in my voice and express myself and I still feel I have some ways to go, to really become the very VERY authentic me.

As someone who exists only as a disembodied voice, I've tried to make sure that my own YT channel plays to my strengths - i.e. existing purely in the medium of recorded voice-over- and, so far at least, I seem to be getting away with it.

I am my own worst critic. So I’ve reviewed all my videos and noticed that I don’t have that animated spirit. Initially I was negative on myself. But I thought about it. I’m an autistic introvert. Being animated would be me not being me if that makes sense. So Nick, I agree with your message. Because as soon as I allowed myself to be me it’s when creating videos actually became easier. Plus autistic people and introverts will relate. And others will thing I’m weird but you know what that’s ok to. We are all a little weird in our own ways doesn’t make us a bad person. Awesome video man!

Great advise! Learned something new watching this content. Relate much on the "comparing" self to other youtubers (im guilty beyond reasonable doubt, hehe!), to the point that I'm already doubting myself, my strategy, my capability, and my slow progress as a small youtuber, which lead to being depressed and lack of motivation to continue...so, thanks for this content, needed to listen to this now...to be my authentic self, enjoy the journey in this platform, be genuine and sincere in my advocacy - what is my goal in creating each content in my channel...and hoping that in one day, the rest will follow...hopefully!

Great content. I was struggling to be myself on my own video coz I think my way of talking is boring and not funny at all. But turn out people don't care about how I talk. They care more about what content I bring to them. Now I just enjoy making content about what I think people want and need from my channel, instead of worry about are they gonna like me.

Nick! Thanks to your advice, I finally discovered why they had a claim on one of my videos. YT allowed me to simply trim that clip out of the video and now it is eligible for monetization again 🙂 YUGE relief since I spent about 3 weeks working on that video and it is pretty good in my opinion. Anyway lol. Thanks again! You're the Goat of this niche imo.

For some years I was very introverted, until my mum passed away, back in 1993.Then I suddenly changed and thought I need to speak up for myself
In my day job in retail,I use my customer service skills to great affect when I am creating content for my channel
So from a TH-cam creator point of view its essential to being just you As this will reflect on your viewers and subscribers and hopefully attract new ones too.
Giving a false impression wont go down well thats a certainty and will drive viewers away.

These are some great suggestions as usual. I've been bingeing your channel this weekend because I really want to improve the videos I put out. Your comment yesterday about taking care of mental health being important for creators really struck a chord with me, and I think you should make a video about that if you haven't already. It's something that has been requested on my channel before, and after listening to what you said, I am thinking about making it. I will make sure to link your livestream in it and give you credit!

"Be constructive....." when I have one of those days filming (I have a fishing channel) when I make mistake after mistake; snags in overhanging trees, tripping over my tongue when talking, etc. I put a blooper reel at the end of my video. Knowing I will put a blooper reel at the end keeps my attitude light and positive even when I am having a rough time filming.
