    23 years ago Yamaha unleashed their YZF-R7 on the world, a 750cc inline 4 cylinder superbike. They only produced & sold 500, the number required to qualify it for the World Superbike Championship. This summer Yamaha reincarnated the R7. Whether it's a "higher form" of the old remains to be seen; it's down 2 cylinders and 60cc's (kind of like being Michael Jordan and coming back as Steve Kerr). With a limit of 1 per dealership, it sure feels like they made less than 500, so it's got exclusivity going for it.

    Thanks for posting this Dave. I've had my new R7 for two weeks... Lots of rain... but got through my break-in miles a couple of days ago. You give me the sense that I've learned a thing or two from you over the years. I've done pretty much what you covered in this video already, and encountered the same observations on adjustment limitations as you show on the bike.
    I'm pushing the limits on what the R7 stock suspension can carry at 250lbs. I cranked a bunch of preload front and back and am sitting at 36mm front rider sag and 34mm at the rear... slightly forward bias intended for track. With all the preload, I'm running into limits of free sag being almost gone, and damping forces that aren't exactly up to the task of controlling the extra spring strength from all the preload. The rebound adjuster on the shock I have only a half turn out from closed. The rebound adjuster on the fork I have only 1 click out from fully closed as well. I adjusted the compression damping on the fork to 6 clicks out from closed to match the movement of the rear as much as possible. The front and rear of the bike move together pretty well. Free sag on the front is ok, but rear free sag is almost gone.
    Its taken a little time riding my R7 to at least figure out what I am starting with to a certain degree, and I plan to visit friends at Traxxion Dynamics soon to beef up the suspension, so my heavy weight is a bit more nominal to what some new hardware can handle.
    Thanks for all you do, Dave. You're helping folks not only ride better, but folks are safer too.

      Great work! As you set sag, also verify fork travel used. I plan on changing fork position to raise the front 5mm to see how that geometry works given the soft forks specifically for braking stability.

    I love your attention to details and the fact that you ALWAYS take into account that riders are different. Personnaly, I love Yamaha for making bikes that even us smaller people can ride comfortably. The saddle on this bike looks pretty similar to the one on my previous MT-07 (or FZ-07 in the US) - and I absolutely loved it! It made it easy for me to mount the bike and maintain control when standing over it, and while riding I could slide back and enjoy the wider comfortable part of the saddle. So many brands could learn from this, but they choose not to. But, as you also point out - lever adjustments are rubbish. This goes for more brands, I know. What I don´t like about the Yamaha´s are all the "afterthought" bits, like the shifter rod on this one and the brake fluid reservoir (this, I would bend to fit, or replace with clear plastic tube). And if you give it the smallest opportunity, any part on the Yammie will rust. But they still come up with a lot of innovative stuff, and make bikes that are a lot of fun for most riders.
    Anyways, thanks for scrutinising this bike - your opinion matters almost more than my own ;)

    I was waiting for this video! Picked up my R7 in Los Angeles and rode up to San Jose for MotoAmerica the other weekend. Everything in this video explained my experience. My wrists were(are) killing me. My left knee is bad but I’ve never had any problems riding and now it definitely starts to kill me especially on the longer rides. I have to constantly stretch. The suspension at stock seemed to buck me a lot and was very soft. I’m 5’6 and 215 pounds. Ended up tuning my suspension the other day the best I could. Did 30mm sag front and rear. Feels MUCH better but I know it can perfected more. You tuned my R6 a few years ago and I was hoping to acquire your services again but it doesn’t seem like you’re around Los Angeles at all =(

    • @nicholasaguirre1661
      @nicholasaguirre1661 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Brian_R6 engine heat is definitely less of a problem. I remember my R6 turned off on me while lane splitting once cuz it got too hot. I haven’t had an issue with the R7. Ergonomics need some work depending on the rider most likely. The R6 I never had to switch anything. I ended up turning out the bars just a bit and dropped my levers as much as I could and my wrists don’t hurt anymore and I’m MUCH more comfortable now. Crazy how big of a difference a small adjustment can make. The brake lever is definitely a problem for adjustment since you’re very limited in how far u can lower it. Suspension is by far way better than the R6 out the gate simply due to the adjustment options. However it’s a very interesting setup since the front is a bit soft and the rear is pretty damn stiff. I’m still adjusting to find my right setup but I ride 100-200 miles a day for work and it’s pretty damn comfortable. Especially the seat. I rode my R6 to Julian which is a 300mile round trip and that trip was killing my back. Even with that 900mile round trip and all my daily miles I haven’t experienced any back pains with the R7. I feel that slight degree difference from the R6 makes it much more enjoyable ride. Overall I don’t regret the purchase and I’m full enjoying the bike. I think it’s worth it and much more comfortable and fun than a R6 to commute on.

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you study median heights for all races globally, spines are generally shorter so arm angle is slightly flatter. As there is some range of movement, there is the possibility ot getting it right. IMHO the angle needs to be set where we are in a crisis situation where time is limited so movement to the brake is quick so you can respond to the crisis not react to it.

    • @garylai363

      @@catalystreactionsbw That makes sense.. the brake lever does appear abnormally high on that bike for some reason. I actually wanted to lower the clutch lever on my bike but I actually couldn't because doing so would make my clutch hit the traction control switches (RSV4). I have a doubt: if we're measuring total fork length from the end of the anodised/outer/top tube, to the end of the chrome/bottom tube, and marking bottom out accordingly, wouldn't that give us a false zip tie read considering the dust/fork seal? In that case, should we be measuring total travel, sag, bottom out etc taking the dust seal into account? I've wondered about this for quite a while, would be lovely to hear the boss man chime in :)

    • @catalystreactionsbw
      @catalystreactionsbw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent question. I started measuring from the bottom of the dust seal and found that did not work, then changed to the tube. So far with accurate data on travel, this method has worked. There have been a couple of instances (RS660 being one) where the data and actual have not matched. The big issue is making sure the forks are fully extended for accuracy.

    • @greyanaroth
      @greyanaroth 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@catalystreactionsbw the reason I ask is because when doing a zip tie read, it is pushed down by the dust seal, which is about 5-8mm, maybe 10mm. Now, say, fully extended your forks are @130mm (tube end to tube end) with 110mm of travel and you mark bottom out at 20mm from the end of the chrome tube. But if your zip tie hits the 20mm mark, does that not mean that you still have the dust seal width to account for?
      Also, why did it not work, measuring from the bottom of the dust seal?

      As sport bike looks fade away, it will appeal to those that like that type of look and can use vinyl etc to ad graphics. The low horsepower is appealing to many 1-3 year riders that are taking their time learning.
