you didn't mention the first gen 80gb model. it had the 4 usb ports, card readers and full backwards compatibility. that is the version i have and it still works.
From what i remember correctly, there was no 80gb model with full bc. Only 20gb and 60gb. You are talking about the partial emulation 80gb ps3. Either way, the partial emulation covered most games and have higher video quality.

The disc drive bandwidth is pretty funny. The Xbox 360 had a faster disc drive while also ironically having the option to full install to the hard drive. Really wish the PS3 had that option. I'll defend PS3 forever though.
Pretty sure ps3 did that for some games as well. Like I never owned one, but iirc me and my friend who did have a ps3 were quite disappointed by having to install gta 4 before we could play it.
I had a launch phat PS3 and i was one of the people who got the YLOD. The thing was, when I went to my local EBGames/Game Stop, I picked up a refurbished phat PS3 and 4 hours later, I got the YLOD again, in which I returned the system and then ended up getting a slim PS3, and it has been with me ever since.
21:53 the ylod of death has nothing to do with overheating. It has to do with the fact that the gpu in the ps3 used improper bump solder material that would get to soft from the constant hot and cold and eventually the chip would break connection with the board. The same problem was what caused the red ring of death. It was known as bump gate and was a widespread issue with electronic devices in the mid 2000s. Later model systems don’t have this issue because the new gpus were made with proper material this time that can handle the temperatures
I spent hours looking for one on launch day and couldn't so decided to go to Blockbuster and rent a PS2 game as a consolation. Miraculously, they had 2 for sale and I got my launch day PS3!
I got my 60gb PS3 a few months after launch. First games I got was Heavenly Sword and MotorStorm, and grabbed the movie Four Brothers as my first BLURAY movie. Eventually, I ended up getting that yellow light of Death hardware failure, and Sony wanted to charge me almost $200 to fix it. They never offered me any type of deal like what Ken got, unfortunately. So, I sold it to someone for cheap who was willing to pay to get it fixed and replaced it with a PS3 Slim when it released.
i got the fat and motorstorm bundle in 2008. It was wrapped under the christmas tree. MY GOD what a time! In 2014 I installed cfw on it and had even more fun playing online! hahhahahaha. Now i own 2 slims fully customized with leds etc etc. Still playing bo1, Heavenly Sword and other games. I own a PS4, 3 xbox 360s, some PS2s and a gaming PC BUT still turning on the PS3 wins me over every night.
and I've literally just started playing PS3 games now. because back then I could only watch game reviews and trailers of that generation. I can remember those times dreaming of having a PS3 starting in high school
I really miss the PSP, I got the PlayStation portable and returned it.. depends to much on a strong WiFi signal which defeats the purpose of portability. BRING BACK PSP!
I will note as someone whos extremely passionate for the FAT PS3s is that yes the systems did get hot and overheat but this was most common for the Launch PS3s with the built in PS2 known as the Emotion Engine (EE) causing more heat but the most common cause for this issue even in the slim was the NEC Tokin copasitors having to be really close to the CELL and RSX to be most effective but intern making the capacitors fail causing the yellow light of death (YLOD). Some nit picky things you said the PS3 had a blue light then showed footage of a PS3 with the green light it always had and the image demonstrating the Other OS option was on a Jailbroken system running REBUG.
This is really nice Austin i love those longer informative videos. You schuld do more like this, find some retro niche product and go over it’s history.
The 20GB CECH B model did not have 2 USB ports, it had the same 4 USB ports as the 60GB CECH A model. No PS3 before the 40GB CECH G model (released late 2007) shipped with only 2 USB ports
Well actually the reason for YLOD and RROD is not the solder between the GPU and Boards, it was the seal betweeh the GPU dies and the GPU board, which would become soft at 70C. PS3s lasted more than 360s because they ran cooler, but they all failed eitherway. Later models use fixed GPUs that don't have the low temperature seal
All PS3 models were backwards with the PS1, but only the launch (fat) 60gb model was backwards compatible with PS1 AND PS2 games. Most people forget or seem to not know about this.
noooooooo Austin whyy you diss my PS3 Super Slim like that? :(((( as a kid I only had a ps2 and psp, my parents stopped caring about me after that I guess lol anyway years later when I was 19 and I had a job I was sitting one day at a cafe with a friend and saw a listing in fb marketplace for a PS3 Super Slim USED 80 euro (1 controller and 3 games) and I asked my friend if he knew if that PS3 was good and he actually said "yeah that's the last version and the best" and I was like "really? lets go get it" it was only a 20 minute drive and that's the story of how I bought my PS3 😁
Actually not a full year, the Playstation 3 (November 17th 2006) actually came out 360 days after the Xbox 360 (November 22nd 2005). Which is actually a fun bit of trivia!
For YLOD, it's not only the GPU, other components could've failed too, there is a long video about everything there is to know about PS3 YLOD and videos on how to see exactly what components failed and need to be replaced or if your PS3 needs a reball. Time consuming for sure.
I’ve noticed that TH-camrs (not hating on Austin, just an observation) never say the Xbox 360 SKU’s correctly. It was Xbox 360 Core and Xbox 360. He called the Xbox 360 (20GB) “Elite” Often other TH-camrs call the Xbox 360 Core an “Arcade” It is: Xbox 360 Xbox 360 Core Xbox 360 Elite Xbox 360 Arcade Xbox 360 S Xbox 360 E
Don‘t forget the PS3 was only this ambitious, because Sony wanted the console to be so hard to develop for, that developers wouldn‘t be able to develop for other plattforms.
I remember buying my PS3 about 3 months or so after launch, and all of my friends giving me crap for spending $600 on a console lol. Always enjoyed the PS3 and thought it was underrated a bit. Greatly enjoyed this video, as I totally forgot about the yellow light fiasco! Well done!
One thing to note: The 20gb model also had 4 usb ports. The moment they brought down the usb ports from 4 to 2 was with the same models when they removed ps2 backwards compatibility. That also means when you find a ps3 that's being sold you just have to look if it has 4 usb ports in order to know if it has ps2 BC. (Apart from checking the specific cechX model)
I got a 20gig model 6 months after launch, I used it heavily and sadly I was one of the unlucky ones to get a YLOD. Only recently reacquired a fat PS3 as I'm working to get the 7 consoles I've had in my life.
remember when multiplayer was free and the UI was clean and snappy without any bs or annoying stuff? and controllers had new features and had built in batteries instead of wasteful AAA. and devs even managed to optimise some games to run at 60 ish fps. those were the days.
I have somewhat a similar PS3 purchase story to Ken's. I was at our mall to see Casino Royale with my family. We went a bit early (having just brought my brother to the airport), so I decided to hop into GameStop... as the UPS man was delivering them to the store! I was then asked how many I wanted! Obviously, I could only afford one but was taken aback by the question. After purchasing it, my dad and I clutched the bag tightly as we trudged through the mall to tell my mother and sister that we were bringing it home and would come back. Didn't miss a second of the movie but suffice to say my mind was elsewhere during it. I was able to truly appreciate when I watched my Blu-Ray (which was played on my PS5!).
The YLOD and RRoD were *NOT* related to high temperatures. It was related to newly developed lead-free RoHS-compliant solder being used in many products at the time. This included: the 360, the PS3, Nvidia's mobile GPUs, and more. The solder cracked as a function of the number of thermal cycles from room temperature to operating temperature and had *ZERO* to do with "overheating" or the actual temperature... anything operated at. The solder would have cracked if the system operated 15 degrees cooler. It would have cracked if it operated much at all above ambient temperature. This is a myth that's been debunked for over a decade.
Great video! My Ps3 slim is still working to this day. If it ever breaks I'm getting another slim. They still had great looks, are damn reliable and were built really good. The super slims are just way too cheap looking and feel like crap. The slim will always be the best of them for me.
Yeah, the Super Slim felt extremely cheap, and that flash storage thing is an absolute joke imo. I've had a Slim since 2011, and it works amazingly even today. Throw in an SSD and it'll run pretty well...
The PS3 vs the 360 felt like the difference between a gameboy and a tiger electronics handheld at the time. It's crazy how much Sony put into that thing. I just picked up an old fat unit, and the design still holds up today. Also the image is still so nice, even on my 50" 4k TV.
what people never understood was that it was actually amazingly priced and thought it was expensive. I get it. For just a console it seemed a lot but if you compare a launch 360 just to add the hard drive and wi-fi module etc it already became more expensive without having all the other goods like HDMI, card readers, blu-ray drive, hardware backwards compatibility etc. That initial fat console was amazing.
@@SIPEROTH Absolutely. I agree. I actually knew quite a few people who owned one simply for the Blu-ray capability. The one I ended up owning I actually bought from my friend's mom because she upgraded her theatre system 🤣
I still feel guilty, but my PS3 60gb lasted 5 years before getting the yellow light. I did a "repair" by using a heat gun to melt the solder which 'fixed' it long enough for it to pass Gamestop's trade in tests which got me about 100-150 towards the God of War Red Super Slim which i still have plugged in today.
I will never forget the launch of the PS3. I was so excited for it, but it was immediately dashed when its price was announced. My dad immediately after this drop bought a 360 there was no way we could afford that let alone with a game. but then our hopes of possibly getting one after a good bonus, mom and dad were blown away from the scalper prices. stores were sold out in several states and we were flat out of luck. I am really happy we did eventually get one roughly around the time of the slim model. nowadays it’s one of my favorite consoles rn. still love booting it up and playing all my old games.
It was the "failure" of the PS3 that forced Ken Kutaragi to resign from his position as the "Father of the Playstation". In retrospect, considering the push of the original, the 2, and the 3, his departure is why Sony's consoles began to meekly move forward. Also, I thought the PS2 was the incarnation of the Cell chips.
We can say that the shiny case was gone, but the matte was way more scratch prone. Or at least picked up absolutely every bit of loose skin cell on your fingers and just stuck there being absolutely impossible to dry clean.
The PS3 Super Slim primarily came in 500gb I know because I bought it in white. Still runs reliably well. The 12 gb model there must’ve been a late in the lifecycle release.
I had a launch ps3 that had backwards compatibility…. I’m still mad at my dad for selling it and then rebuying a newer one… the model that had the thermal paste flaw 🤦🏻♀️
It wasn't a thermal paste flaw. The original fat ps3s that had 90nm chips had defective GPUs, suffering the same issue as the Xbox 360s from launch to about mid 2008.
my concern that nobody mentions: my CECHA 60Gb PS3 running PS2 games consumes 220W of power (presumably running CELL and RSX to upscale and emulate sound) while being pretty loud and heating up the room, while PS2 slim consumes 15W and almost inaudible. Such a waste.
way more models exist than you showed. typical lack of research and knowledge from austin and crew. the original BC had both the cpu and gpu of the ps2 on board. You only said the emotion engine and not the graphics synthesizer. The 80gb model didn't drop ps2 compat. It just dropped the emotion engine but kept the graphics synthesizer. You guys aren't even trying it's pathetic. It wasn't the first ever removal of backwards compatibility. There was the gameboy micro that removed gb/gbc compat. That was in 2004. I was part of the lawsuit over dropping linux and it wasn't 25c per person it was around $25-30.
Very interesting and comprehensive overview, sir. I like how unlike your regular videos this is. (No offense intended. Usually it's just too 'shouty' for my taste, with a hyperfocus on buying (which feels a bit showy-offy, and pummels in the fact that I don't have that kind of money), and - more importantly - the actual information given gets overshadowed) Anyways - I appreciate this one
Excellent look back to a wild time in gaming. I was a middle schooler when the PS3 dropped, and was absolutely obsessed with it. I badgered my poor mom, God bless her, into getting me a launch model 60GB when they were on their way out in January 2008. Played the HELL out of that thing. Thoroughly used the PS2 back compat as well. Unforunately, I got the infamous YLOD in early 2012, so I ended up replacing it with a Slim I still have to this day. Still fire it up occasionally for Rock Band 3 and old Dragon Ball and racing games. PS3 will always have a special place in my heart.
Nice that Sony replaced Ken’s PS3 after YLOD, My PS5 died 1 DAY after the 1 year warranty was up and they wanted £275 to replace it. Lost it over the phone, deleted my playstation account, cut my losses and game on PC now instead.
I remember waiting for my pay cheque so I could go to EB Games and grab myself a PS3. I bought the 60 gig model and Resistance Fall of Man as my first game! Those where the days

I had never even heard of the YLOD until it happened to me... Sadly, it was a launch 60GB and they replaced it with a Slim. I didn't really use the back-compat or the ports and stuff, but it sucked to lose them.
you didn't mention the first gen 80gb model. it had the 4 usb ports, card readers and full backwards compatibility. that is the version i have and it still works.
From what i remember correctly, there was no 80gb model with full bc. Only 20gb and 60gb. You are talking about the partial emulation 80gb ps3. Either way, the partial emulation covered most games and have higher video quality.
You're talking about the 60GB model.
I don't think that ever existed man.
@@player-one1yes! It only had the PS2 's GPU, instead of CPU+GPU+RAM. Here in Europe we only got this version, even in the 60GB flavour! (Motherboard is COK-002 instead of COK-001).
My dude I hate to point something out that is always overlooked on all PS3's.....all PS3's can play PS1 games all day. lol something worth mentioning. Keep up the excellent content that you provide my dude. Also we need a Micro Center in AZ like I've said before on previous comments.
The 20gb ps3 had 4 usb ports. Not 2
The disc drive bandwidth is pretty funny.
@@zwenkwiel816 Games that needed to use the HDD would install parts or fully to it. But you couldnt choose what games did that like you could on 360.
16:00 bro it literally says DualShock 3 on top. Original Sixaxis controllers had that text on top and nothing on the bottom.
What's YOLD. You that lazy to spell four words
@@Ryan-p1ge0nif you actually watched the video you'd know that it means yellow light of death
I think we can easily say the backward compatible models were the best. I mean, PS2 AND upscaling?! Yes.
Great video Austin!
The Gears of War example video is definitely just Killzone again
Awesome video! You guys never disappoint!
I had a PS3 Slim, it was an amazing console.
Now its slowed down for idk what reason, but it is usable as a DVD player or something idk
PS3 consoles had hard drives for storage. Hard drives slow down over time. An SSD (Solid State Drive) would fix it.
@@Wally504they don't, usually it means the HDD is dying
@@My_Old_YT_Account actually yea you're right idk why else they'd slow down
and I've literally just started playing PS3 games now. because back then I could only watch game reviews and trailers of that generation.
The ps3 had more sales than the wii U tho
It was the best-selling 7th Gen console so yeah
wtf is a will U? Is that like what Trump pays for?
@@kidShibuyatf you yapping about, it’s Nintendo’s console before the switch
@@kidShibuyathe Wii U was the successor to the Wii
That's not a major accomplishment
This is really nice Austin i love those longer informative videos. You schuld do more like this, find some retro niche product and go over it’s history.
its just him being obnoxious like he has been since 2017
his older videos were so much better
Learned a bit about console history, always nice to see content like this.
Also, what's up with all the garbage comments?
Example: First 🗣🗣🗣
The 20GB CECH B model did not have 2 USB ports, it had the same 4 USB ports as the 60GB CECH A model. No PS3 before the 40GB CECH G model (released late 2007) shipped with only 2 USB ports
The loss on ps3 at launch made ps4 & ps5 profitable with making Blu ray standard
I still play ps3
Well actually the reason for YLOD and RROD is not the solder between the GPU and Boards, it was the seal betweeh the GPU dies and the GPU board, which would become soft at 70C. PS3s lasted more than 360s because they ran cooler, but they all failed eitherway. Later models use fixed GPUs that don't have the low temperature seal
I love the super slim... Opening & closing the disc try is so satisfying... Austin is just a cheap heater... The super slim 4 ever ✊🏾💯
11:00 my mall had 2 and that mall was so small it didnt even have a traditional food court. they were EVERYWHERE
idk why but I really love these types of videos you make
All PS3 models were backwards with the PS1, but only the launch (fat) 60gb model was backwards compatible with PS1 AND PS2 games. Most people forget or seem to not know about this.
noooooooo Austin whyy you diss my PS3 Super Slim like that? :((((
as a kid I only had a ps2 and psp, my parents stopped caring about me after that I guess lol
anyway years later when I was 19 and I had a job I was sitting one day at a cafe with a friend and saw a listing in fb marketplace for a PS3 Super Slim USED 80 euro (1 controller and 3 games) and I asked my friend if he knew if that PS3 was good and he actually said "yeah that's the last version and the best" and I was like "really? lets go get it" it was only a 20 minute drive and that's the story of how I bought my PS3 😁
Actually not a full year, the Playstation 3 (November 17th 2006) actually came out 360 days after the Xbox 360 (November 22nd 2005). Which is actually a fun bit of trivia!
11:30 of course this guy lived a nice wealthy life
For YLOD, it's not only the GPU, other components could've failed too, there is a long video about everything there is to know about PS3 YLOD and videos on how to see exactly what components failed and need to be replaced or if your PS3 needs a reball. Time consuming for sure.
This felt more like an LGR Retrospective and I’m all for it. Would love more videos like this
I’ve noticed that TH-camrs (not hating on Austin, just an observation) never say the Xbox 360 SKU’s correctly.
It was Xbox 360 Core and Xbox 360.
He called the Xbox 360 (20GB) “Elite”
Often other TH-camrs call the Xbox 360 Core an “Arcade”
It is:
Xbox 360
Xbox 360 Core
Xbox 360 Elite
Xbox 360 Arcade
Xbox 360 S
Xbox 360 E
Man, this system recap was excellent, lots of memories! Loved it
i was JUST watching the "I BOUGHT EVERY PS2" video yesterday and was like "I wonder when he will make one on the PS3's"!!
really great video and series, always looking forward to these
I got a 20gig model 6 months after launch, I used it heavily and sadly I was one of the unlucky ones to get a YLOD. Only recently reacquired a fat PS3 as I'm working to get the 7 consoles I've had in my life.
Some of the realest gamers went from;
super Nintendo,
to GameCube,
to Ps1,
to Ps2,
to Xbox 360,
to Ps4,
to PC
👌👌👌👌
How to you go from Gamecube to PS1? Gamecube was PS2 generation.
remember when multiplayer was free and the UI was clean and snappy without any bs or annoying stuff? and controllers had new features and had built in batteries instead of wasteful AAA. and devs even managed to optimise some games to run at 60 ish fps. those were the days.
Plus you can’t fully jailbreak the super slim homebrew enabler is ass
@@MichaelUrbanskii Lmao, that makes the Super Slim a "use and throw" tech product 😂
I love the console story videos! Thx 😃
Gran Turismo 6 came out after the Playstation 4 was released. I think you meant Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. 5 came out after that.
I remember the launch in some "fun" places in Michigan. My friend's Security company was booked solid by all the gaming places that had them
The PS3 vs the 360 felt like the difference between a gameboy and a tiger electronics handheld at the time.
Kinda wish you would go ahead and do a video about the Frankenstein PS3.
6:19 not the elite, just the standard version vs core.
Meanwhile me in Middle East, making it super hard to find PS3s in my area😞
Where r u in the middle east? I'm in Egypt and there're plenty of PS3s around
Forget Mystery Tech. This is what I sub for.
PS3 was peak
I had a 360 like most of my college peers, but I bought the 80gb ps3 only to play metal gear solid then solid it all on eBay
These ps3 engineers ambitions remind me of the German ww2 engineers coming up with random wild stuff😂
Ken
We can say that the shiny case was gone, but the matte was way more scratch prone. Or at least picked up absolutely every bit of loose skin cell on your fingers and just stuck there being absolutely impossible to dry clean.
The PS3 Super Slim primarily came in 500gb I know because I bought it in white. Still runs reliably well. The 12 gb model there must’ve been a late in the lifecycle release.
Yes, i have both so there definitely was a 500GB model as well.
@@SIPEROTH Also a 250GB
I had a launch ps3 that had backwards compatibility…. I’m still mad at my dad for selling it and then rebuying a newer one… the model that had the thermal paste flaw 🤦🏻♀️
Which slim or super slim
@@Saxofome the slim I think… the one without the sliding door to the disk drive. It looks like a launch ps3, without the extra usb
@@inudigifan201 Ahh that one. Still one of the best PS3 model I've bought.
It wasn't a thermal paste flaw. The original fat ps3s that had 90nm chips had defective GPUs, suffering the same issue as the Xbox 360s from launch to about mid 2008.
Whoever didn't rotate the logo on that 3rd vertical console for the glamour shots should be fired.
my concern that nobody mentions: my CECHA 60Gb PS3 running PS2 games consumes 220W of power (presumably running CELL and RSX to upscale and emulate sound) while being pretty loud and heating up the room, while PS2 slim consumes 15W and almost inaudible. Such a waste.
4:35 that's not Gears of War 2
way more models exist than you showed. typical lack of research and knowledge from austin and crew. the original BC had both the cpu and gpu of the ps2 on board.
Usually it's just too 'shouty' for my taste, with a hyperfocus on buying (which feels a bit showy-offy, and pummels in the fact that I don't have that kind of money), and - more importantly - the actual information given gets overshadowed)
Anyways - I appreciate this one
The ridiculous thing is of course that the slim is backwards compatible with PS2 via emulation. It’s pretty good at it.
I have a _jailbroken_ PS3 Still *SLAPS* . Still has the "free online play" with a Psn account and it works safely.
Also PS2 emulation with the Slim or superslim
While PS3 Phat can without emulating it
2:26 I wouldn't call Microsofts debut console outselling the Nintendo console of the generation by millions of units only a modest success.
I remember when you can split your PS3 hard drive. And run Linux on your PS3 but they did a update and disable it.
This explained videos are great. Been throughly enjoying them. Eager for the PS4 one.
Nice that Sony replaced Ken’s PS3 after YLOD,
My PS5 died 1 DAY after the 1 year warranty was up and they wanted £275 to replace it.
Lost it over the phone, deleted my playstation account, cut my losses and game on PC now instead.
I remember waiting for my pay cheque so I could go to EB Games and grab myself a PS3. I bought the 60 gig model and Resistance Fall of Man as my first game! Those where the days
This video made me realize how lucky Iw as to have a PS3. I still can’t believe my parents were able to afford it. I’ll always be super grateful
