As someone who’s been a repair technician for all kinds of consumer electronics, I would say the choice to order a surface laptop was a good and bad choice. Reason being that any repairs on a surface 2 in 1 are crazy difficult because the screen is a horrible experience to remove if it isn’t already damaged(even if it is, it can still be a hellish experience). If your surface had its battery replaced but not the screen then I totally see it possible that the technician damaged the screen accidentally. Then again, it would’ve been very impressive to see that Back Market’s selection of qualified refurbishers actually able to complete a repair like that. So again, good and bad choice.
I've bought 2 phones already from BackMarket (both UK & US) and I am actually satisfied with my purchases. It's pretty much the same experience with Austin's when ordering the fair/good condition. You just have to manage expectations and sometimes you get better specs or "freebies" just like the Gamepass 👌🏼
At one point, I feel like Back Market was actually a great deal. I bought a used Galaxy S7 from there shortly after the S8 came out. It was essentially brand new, great condition, and for super cheap (I think around $300). I got the S10 when that came out, but when I decided to try an iPhone again about two years ago, Back Market was not competitively priced at all. I looked at both Android and iPhones, but couldn't really find anything on there even close to eBay or other secondhand market prices. Just not worthwhile anymore in my opinion, but was once a great place to look for deals.
Bought a 2018 Macbook Pro for school from backmarket in fair condition, and there were minor scuffs, definitely didn't feel like it needed to be in fair condition. The keyboard works perfectly too and hasn't failed! (knock on wood)
I don't mind refurbed, but it should still be closer to the second hand value, than to the new price. With these prices you may as well just buy two second hand ones from a random seller. Worst case scenario you only get it right on the second attempt ;).
I was 1000% going to leave a comment about how you can get a brand new series X for only $60 more but then the 2 years of gamepass ultimate came up and wow, that makes it worth it.
Don't assume they'll all come with it. And I think I bought a year of Game Pass for about $30. So if you're willing to jump through some VPN hoops, you can get it cheap.
The Surface did have bad pixel burn but that's super common in most Surfaces that are past a few years old :/ The non-touch issue was a driver not being installed most likely. If you fresh install Windows from a wiped SSD the drivers aren't natively installed. Turning on Wifi and checking for updates fixes this in about 10 minutes.
Recently brought an iPhone 12 for the girlfriend because her old one was stolen, white, 128gb in "good" condition and cost £335. I was blown away when it arrived, it looked brand spanking new, fresh off the Chinese factory floor. Obviously not every seller or item will come near perfect but it was an easy, stress-free experience. Will definitely go back when I'm due an upgrade
All this makes me want to do is not ever buy a "fair" product lmfao, I couldn't get behind how bad even the cosmetic scratches were for something I'm paying hella money for tbh... But the ones that were in better condition, if that is applied to all their products, could find some great deals it seems!
lmao dude your just brainwashed believe it or not i'm writing this to you on my macbook FROM backmarket and the ONLY issue with it is the battery is trash but that is literally it and mind you it's an 11 year old piece of technology
I bought a monitor from backmarket that was "fair" the screen is pristine, there are a couple visible scuffs in the plastic but I have to look for them to see them. The base has a bunch of scratches but I wouldn't consider that important.
@@sundaxe10 oh no your macbook from 11 years ago still works, i guess im totally brainwashed because I said I wouldnt want scuffs on my tech! whatever dude, I didn't say the products wouldnt work or anything, and admitted you could find good deals. So please GTFO bud.
@@rogervanaman6739 Yea thats a good point, I guess it would depend on what each device was. A monitor with scuffs on a stand wouldnt even matter if you had an arm mount or scuffs on the back plate which youre never going to see. I recently purchased a Galaxy Note 20 5G for $180. The phone arrived in just two days, which was quite impressive. Initially, everything worked perfectly. However, after a few days, I encountered an issue with the Bluetooth-it stopped working and wouldn’t turn back on. Despite this setback, the return process was straightforward and only took a few minutes. I received a replacement phone two days later without any issues. Overall, despite the initial hiccup, I’m satisfied with my purchase and the customer service I received.
Your Xbox was a lease package. I got one of these when I leased mine in the middle of the great shortage.... the beauty of the lease was that you actually spent less for the Xbox Series X and Game Pass, with no interest payments spread out over 3 years.
Console leasing doesn't seem to be a thing here in the UK just _yet_ (There is one company leasing out smartphones and laptops, so it'll come soon enough) but UK advertising law requires leases be clear over the fact they are _lending_ rather than _selling_ you the product. This is clearest on ads for cars leased by _Personal Contract Hire_ (As opposed to _Personal Contract _*_Purchase_* which is a classic lease-to-buy) where the ad must clarify that _„You will not own this car“_ 🚫 I'm picturing a UK leasing ad for the inevitable XBox Series X2 and the quite shocking disclaimer _„You will not own this console...Even if your YT channel implies otherwise“_ 🙃
@@dieseldragon6756 In the Xbox "lease" - you own the Xbox after the "lease" period. I also missed that it was 2 years, at $37, which includes Xbox Ultimate Game Pass during that period.
Back market is great. There's always a risk buying refurbished, but Back market has a great return/guarantee policy. Most of what I've bought has worked like new, or at least close to it.
This has just appeared in my feed. My partner bought an Iphone from them. 2 days after buying it, it slid off her couch onto the carpet and the screen fell off. Literally came apart. They would not touch it because it was 'fall damage'. Their customer service was apalling. I wouldn't go near them
my personal experience with back market is overwhelmingly positive, i have only bought off them twice, and only to buy iphones. both bought in "excellent" condition, saved around £200 the first time and around £320 this time compared to buying new, both phones came with 100% battery capacity, not a scratch on either. Cant speak for anyone else but i will most likely buy my next phone in a couple of years from them again
A few years ago, my friend ordered an iPhone Xr from Back Market, and it was fine. After an unfortunate sequence of events it ended up taking a dip in a swimming pool. It wasn't underwater for that long, but still died. This makes me wonder if and how Back Market and other refurbishers test for water proofing/resistance on their refurbished devices, as well as other aspects that aren't obvious from visual inspection, like the used iPad on the channel a few years ago they bought to compare to that cheap HP All in one; the one that had half the Geekbench score it should have had because half the cores weren't working.
Any phone refurbisher I've EVER bought from has always clearly stated in the item description that once the device is opened up the waterproofing is essentially gone forever. Not sure if it's something only the manufacturer can do, or if it's not something the refurbisher wants to put their own guarantee on considering they most likely don't make anywhere close to what a massive manufacturer does.
Phones are not waterproof for eternity. Especially Iphones lose them after about a year. Seen it happen many times with brand new devices. Is not covered, the manufacturers will tell you the same.
Its kinda a hit or miss when you buy from places like this. Someone could buy X and it could be really messed up and someone else could buy the same exact thing and it look good. I looked through their site and didn't see any great deals on anything but maybe next week there might be one who knows. I'm sticking to buying new, knowing its new is worth the extra money
The thing with surfaces is that if they have data wiped it correctly and then just installed windows onto it, tested that everything works, wiped it again and reinstalled it leaving it on the setup, then there will be no touch screen.
8:08 what I don’t understand is that it takes less than 1 minute to see if a touch screen is working or not and you would think it would be part of the refurbish process to see it’s working or not. In my opinion that’s really BAD!
I've bought my mom, sister, and myself a phone from back market, and bought new jbl ear buds and a Samsung galaxy tablet, and everything came in really great quality. I'm a big advocate for backmarket.
personally i love backmarket just bc of there 1yr warranty and excellent customer support, and bc of this u can literally sort by cheapest of any product without worry, which does have a great value. Dont buy the fair, good, excellent claims bc its all by the seller labeled it as. And if it doesn't fall under the fair category u either return it, the seller swaps it with a better one, u get a discount if u wanna just put up with it, or return
It's my money and I can do whatever I want. Sorry you can't afford new and excellent condition products. I buy new and A1 condition products. But you're right, I'll pay $357 for a new ps3 since that's what I use that app for is for consoles collection only.

I bought a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro from back market that was in “good” condition and it was damn near MINT! The only noticeable damage was a slight scuff on top and a tiny dent on the bottom. If I wasn’t looking for it, I probably would’ve never noticed it It also came packaged REALLY well, but it didn’t come with the original charger, but what I received seems more robust
Swappa is my favorite spot to get second hand tech. You actually get photos of what you’re getting and can get a great price. Series Xs often go for $375
The fact they sent out a tablet with a broken touchscreen is wild... what a complete waste of time. It seems like it's better to buy from an eBay listing where they took photos of the exact item you're getting.

Great video! I haven't had any experience with Back Market but wondered how good they were. I'm a big fan when it comes to finding deals on tech. I've bought used stuff from Amazon Warehouse with mostly positive results. The laptop I'm watching this on Is a "open box" item from Best Buy that came with 8 months of remaining factory warranty and was a couple hundred dollars cheaper than new. However, it's always a good plan to be able to return the item if it doesn't meet your expectations.
I bought a phone from backmarket and it turned up In pretty bad shape with a battery that had clearly already been charged hundreds of times and was no good. It was the one and only time I took a gamble and it didn't pay off.
I got my M1 MacBook Pro 16GB RAM & 512GB SSD for like $1,100 from Back Market like 1.5-2 years ago and it came in great shape. Except the battery is a little tired but with Apple Silicon being so efficient it doesn’t bother me at all.

i used backmarket to get an iphone 12 pro for about $400 when trading in my old phone. it was good condition and although it had an 80% battery life, it came with apple care for a year which was nice. i actually liked the phone and didnt care much about the battery life (i saw reviews saying the battery life sucked and expected it). its all just luck of the draw but what really makes the website worth it is the 30 day returns and warranty. in case u get a lemon, you have ALOT of time to either return it or have it fixed which is a HUGE perk with refurbishing websites
I've had a pretty good experience with them buying 3 different phones, but like other sites it really just depends on the competition at the time of purchasing. I got an excellent condition 256gb iPhone XS about 2 years ago with not a single scratch on the screen and was about $50 cheaper than any other site regardless of condition. I also got 2 Motorola phones for my gf's parents and they were about $100 each whereas they were at minium $160 elsewhere. Also comparing to Amazon "renewed" isn't a very good comparison, Amazon does a whole zero inspection, there's a good chance when buying a refurbished Amazon phone that you either don't even get what you ordered, or you get a shotty repair job and don't notice until it's too late. I got my grandmother's phone from Amazon and they apparently swapped the entire motherboard so a lot of the info in the settings is just broken, the finger print sensor is also completely broken but she doesn't use a passcode so we didn't notice. I could re-buy the exact same phone from backmarket for $150 and it'll almost definitely be in far better condition than hers arrived in 3+ years ago (it's a Galaxy Note 9).
I bought a good condition 2020 M1 Air from backmarket and the ONLY complaint I have with it is the keyboard seems to have some garbage under it that prevents keys from pushing down unless you mash them, I'm sure I can take it apart and fix it but it actually works perfectly fine.
Honestly, I bought a PlayStation2 a tablet, AirPods, and a phone off of Back Market and every time it looks brand spanking, new, fresh and clean. I had that same version of surface with a chinese charger. The touchscreen worked perfectly EXCEPT when it was charging with that particular charger (other chargers worked). Did you try using the touchscreen when it was not charging ?
I knew 100% the touchscreen would not work. I have the same one I bought to use as a PC and just added a keyboard and Mouse. Only thing is the listing said the Touchscreen did not work and I paid like $150. I think if you go into the devices setting it may be a driver issue if not the senser was probably removed.

I have puchased two phones so far, and actually had a samsung Note 10+ break on me the first time. I have never purchased anything refurbished because I always ask myself one question. What parts were used during this repair? If I am paying near retail, I’d like to know it’s quality parts. Considering I can’t know what parts they are, it’s a no go for me
you have to ask what did they do to refurbish it. some things did not seem to have anything done. on the phone why not include a screen protector fitted for the price and even a case. to save just 20 to 30 on getting something new or better. i think i would rather save up and get the new so it will last longer. you had to send an item back that is Poor quality control it should never have been sent were was the checks and tests done on it to allow it to come out as it was.
That Xbox console was bought from the leasing program they did through Citizens Bank, It appears someone sold it without using the Gold included with the system for a quick buck and abandoned the system and the payments on it. That wont affect the system at all, but thats why you got 2 years of GPU.
I'd say yes. Ordered two phones from them in excellent condition. The first phone was supposed to be locked to T-Mobile and it was locked to AT&T. Plus the screen wasn't genuine and it was bulky. So I sent it back. The second phone was supposed to be excellent but had scratches everywhere, gunk in the speaker and the speaker didn't work. So I sent that back. They have zero quality control. I then just ordered from Amazon, a renewed premium phone and it is like new. Not a scratch, or dent and 100% health. Don't buy from back market and if you do, expect to send it back if you order it in anything but fair condition

The non-touch issue was a driver not being installed most likely.
Did you buy from Back Market?
@@arafatzahan3697that’s what he was implying
I make tech videos just like Austin evans would preciate if you gave them a shot
As long as the screen works and no dead pixels hiding somewhere then you'd be good to go!
I did the same but mine was over 2 years.
A lease package? How does that work!
@@JeskidoYTyou pay a monthly fee. Don’t like it? Send it back. Like it? Keep it with monthly payments for a set period of time
Console leasing doesn't seem to be a thing here in the UK just _yet_ (There is one company leasing out smartphones and laptops, so it'll come soon enough) but UK advertising law requires leases be clear over the fact they are _lending_ rather than _selling_ you the product.
This is clearest on ads for cars leased by _Personal Contract Hire_ (As opposed to _Personal Contract _*_Purchase_* which is a classic lease-to-buy) where the ad must clarify that _„You will not own this car“_ 🚫
I'm picturing a UK leasing ad for the inevitable XBox Series X2 and the quite shocking disclaimer _„You will not own this console...Even if your YT channel implies otherwise“_ 🙃
@@dieseldragon6756 In the Xbox "lease" - you own the Xbox after the "lease" period. I also missed that it was 2 years, at $37, which includes Xbox Ultimate Game Pass during that period.
i can guarantee you back market isn’t a scam, bought PLENTY of devices from them
Same they are pretty much the only place I buy electronics anymore and I have never been disappointed
Same here
Who are you
Back market is great. There's always a risk buying refurbished, but Back market has a great return/guarantee policy. Most of what I've bought has worked like new, or at least close to it.
Same here!! So far so good!! I love back market
Na once they open any phone that water resistance is out the window back market or not
Any phone refurbisher I've EVER bought from has always clearly stated in the item description that once the device is opened up the waterproofing is essentially gone forever. Not sure if it's something only the manufacturer can do, or if it's not something the refurbisher wants to put their own guarantee on considering they most likely don't make anywhere close to what a massive manufacturer does.
well, there's ways to restore it, but I wouldn't test it if I don't have to lol @@-_JayR_-
Phones are not waterproof for eternity.
Yeah. Its 100% a gamble. And since there are multiple sellers selling the same thing with the same listing, who knows.
The thing with surfaces is that if they have data wiped it correctly and then just installed windows onto it, tested that everything works, wiped it again and reinstalled it leaving it on the setup, then there will be no touch screen.
We have bought 4 items on Backmarket with 0 issues, i think bad experiences are pretty rare from experiences of people i know
8:08 what I don’t understand is that it takes less than 1 minute to see if a touch screen is working or not and you would think it would be part of the refurbish process to see it’s working or not.
I brought a ‘very good’ switch oled for £240 and it was brand new
Seeing the price of the Xbox a month ago is pretty funny when brand new units are now on sale for $350+ in December.
As for the surface charger most of the time the surface contacts get dirty and you can wipe them clean with a lens wipe or something.
Yeah you gotta…. clean the surface
Thank you for doing a video on this. Can’t tell you how long I’ve been waiting for a reliable review.
He didn't even buy the excellent condition products. Only fair and good
@@Kernee that’s what I am looking for anyways. Cool if you can afford an excellent one. At that point might as well buy it brand new. 😂
It's my money and I can do whatever I want. Sorry you can't afford new and excellent condition products. I buy new and A1 condition products. But you're right, I'll pay $357 for a new ps3 since that's what I use that app for is for consoles collection only.
@@Kernee, another reply? . You have no idea how much I have so who are you to judge? Maybe I buy some things used in order to save and buy newer things that mean more to me. Watching this off of my new samsung s10+ from back market, conveniently enough. Got it in excellent condition, and i'm very hapy with it !
I want to find a great condition Note 9 512gb. Nice to know you scored an s10+ in excellent condition. That Note 9 was the last phone Samsung made that had it all. I want it as a collector's item. If I could find new old stock somewhere?
Guess I have been lucky with Amazon Renewed? I have ordered refurb phones and several bluetooth speakers from Amazon, and all have worked/been in better shape that what I have seen from Back Market and/or DK Oldies.
The stuff I order from Amazon renewal sometimes comes from back market
I bought a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro from back market that was in “good” condition and it was damn near MINT! The only noticeable damage was a slight scuff on top and a tiny dent on the bottom. If I wasn’t looking for it, I probably would’ve never noticed it
It also came packaged REALLY well, but it didn’t come with the original charger, but what I received seems more robust
Does it still work?
Swappa is my favorite spot to get second hand tech. You actually get photos of what you’re getting and can get a great price. Series Xs often go for $375
I always find it interesting that they only showcase the 4 and 5 star reviews on their site.
bit of a weird thing to say, why would they show anything else?
You can pay to have bad reviews removed lol
I’m from Texas.
I’ve bought three iPhones one tablet and two computers from Back Market and I’ve had no problems with my devices.
Lol I was literally about to buy a phone from their site and decided to look up a video review before pulling the trigger! Thanks Austin!
So did you get the phone?
The fact they sent out a tablet with a broken touchscreen is wild... what a complete waste of time. It seems like it's better to buy from an eBay listing where they took photos of the exact item you're getting.
@@tomer4566 It can happen but you can still send it back? Consumer rights and all. We have never had issues sending back faulty or wrong items here in Germany.

I've bought a couple of iphones thru backmarket, and it has worked fine for me. You just need to be careful with selecting a good seller
7:42 I only buy refurbished or used because of the price. So little issues mean nothing as long as it works 😂
Hi Austin just wanna say i have been watching your vids for a while especially your gaming pc tutorials i managed to build an RTX 4060ti gaming pc for $800 and when i got it i followed your video all the way through very easy to follow and very simple
My stupid ass thought it was black market 💀
If you get a couple scratches of a device that's liek half the original, it's still cheaper to repair the minor stuff than buy a new one
They sent you a junk surface with a sticker on it to hide damage. 😂🤣
i used backmarket to get an iphone 12 pro for about $400 when trading in my old phone. it was good condition and although it had an 80% battery life, it came with apple care for a year which was nice. i actually liked the phone and didnt care much about the battery life (i saw reviews saying the battery life sucked and expected it). its all just luck of the draw but what really makes the website worth it is the 30 day returns and warranty. in case u get a lemon, you have ALOT of time to either return it or have it fixed which is a HUGE perk with refurbishing websites
I've bought 3 phones from there total and they've all been flawless so I'm intrigued lol
i got my iphone X for $100 on there, traded it in on backmarket as well and got a 12 mini for $145
I've had a pretty good experience with them buying 3 different phones, but like other sites it really just depends on the competition at the time of purchasing.
Must of my audio tech is from Back Market and I love em all.
I bought a good condition 2020 M1 Air from backmarket and the ONLY complaint I have with it is the keyboard seems to have some garbage under it that prevents keys from pushing down unless you mash them, I'm sure I can take it apart and fix it but it actually works perfectly fine.
Thank god more tech videos.
Austin you saved my weekend, thank you my friend
