Why The 2021 RAM 1500 Is On My Shopping List

  • Should you put the RAM 1500 on your list? It's on mine. That said, I have specific preferences and needs in a new vehicle and with so many excellent truck options in America right now we're truly spoiled for choice. While it's not going to be the right fit for everyone, if you are looking for a solid V8 engine, an excellent ride, the best interior in the segment, and solid practical features, the RAM 1500 is the right truck for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for higher payloads, the latest towing tech, or the best small diesel, you'll find that in either the Chevy or the Ford.

    Ram 1500 and Ford 150 are where it’s at depending on what you want. Ram for luxury and ride quality. F-150 for innovation like the hybrid, electric or even hands free driving. I don’t know why anyone who isn’t some shameless Chevy fanboy would buy a Chevy. They’re always just playing catch up. Interior quality is just one example.. they’re the last to update their interior.

    GM trucks have a trailering information sticker on every truck that is specific to that truck, so you don't need to plug in a VIN to get the info. If the max tow rating isn't listed, just multiply the max hitch weight limit by 10 to get the max tow rating.

  • @AlaskaErik
    @AlaskaErik 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd be sticking with the Silverado/Sierra for two reasons. 1. The 6.2L engine with the 10 speed transmission. 2. As stated, GM is the best truck for towing technology. I tow and I love the various tow features, such as trailer tire pressure and temperature displayed on my infotainment screen, the downward looking camera view for lining up the hitch and coupler, and with it, the parking brake automatically engaging when the transmission is placed in Park. I also like the trailer light test feature, trailer profiles that keep track of accumulated mileage of each trailer and the trailer anti-theft feature that sets off the alarm when the trailer is unplugged from the 7 pin. And that's just to name a few.

    Re: the Ridgeline's tailgate. It does actually have detents when you open the gate sideways. There is one at about 40% open and then full open. Those detents aren't incredibly strong and pronounced given the weight and inertia of the gate. It's easy for the gate to overpower those detents, especially if the truck's nose is pointed downhill.

    A month ago, I bought a Ram 1500 Bighorn quad cab. 2wd, 5.7 hemi. I am replacing a 2012 model with the same configuration but that one is an Express so this new one is a huge step up as far a features.
    I live in an area where I don't need 4wd and I got the quad cab because I wanted the 6' 4" bed but not a truck that was too long. I never considered a Ford because their extended cab trucks still use the rearward opening doors instead of standard opening. That configuration makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to get into the back when parked in a tight parking spot. I carry my tools in the back seat so I have to be able to access them. I also didn't want a Chevy because I really don't like the design.
    I just love this truck!

    6:03 I agree with this. They've just started to offer the 6.4 in the Wrangler (although I feel that's unnecessary), and it would fit in the 1500, so I don't know why they wouldn't do it. Besides, the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer will have this engine, and they're based on the 1500. Update: there's a new GT trim for the 1500, but unfortunately it still gets the 5.7 like the others. No significant performance upgrades there.

    Alex - I own a 2019 Laramie CC that’s fully loaded with the off road group, premium everything, black sport kit, all stock. It had the V8 and I get up to 24mpg and average 18. It has 47k and has been superb in New England winters and rough country. Everyone loves it. It listed for $62k and I paid $46 new. It’s my first truck. I absolutely love it. I also own a 2019 Honda Accord 6spd sport turbo. Which is fun with my long commute to work. I’m practical most of the time and not brand loyal. My first American car and my first Asian car. the 6.4 is a bored out 5.7. The issue with it as a workhorse engine is that it took what is a strong block (the 5.7) and made the block very thin and light while adding a lot of power to it (srt 392/6.4). What they did for the heavy duty trucks was redesign the engine and make it all iron and no aluminum and added some other reinforcements, as well as significantly detuning it to 410hp and 429ft-lbs of torque. The extra displacement gave it better low end torque, vs the 5.7 which has to rev out a little more to get good torque, but they completely gimped it at the high end to keep it from exploding. The extra weight of the iron block and marginal on paper performance bump just wouldn't be worth it in the ram 1500, mainly due to fuel economy but also weight balance. As for the srt 392, I think it should of been the base engine in the trx (a lighter trx jumps better, gets double digit mpg and has better weight balance) and it should of been an option in the longhorn and limited trims to compete with the 3.5 ecoboost and 6.2 ecotech. I think they were just afraid to put it in the ram 1500 due to its cooling based towing restrictions, as about 9k is as high as it would go before it would run into thermal issues. For the trx that's fine because it's way lower, but for the limited and longhorn, people would probably be pissed hearing their payload AND towing went DOWN because they got the more powerful engine.
    Edit: the GM trucks have all the towing/payload info for the specific truck on a sticker in the door, which is infinitely more useful than being on the website, granted the website is better than what ford, toyota and nissan offer which is nothing

    I am apparently the odd man out with the Trailboss here lol. I think Rams are nice and considered all options with test drives on all twice before deciding which 1/2 ton was my favorite. In 2014 I chose the F150 since the Ram I test drove had a broken mirror and at the time Chevy was not desirable at all to me. In 2020 I desired a more rugged truck so the choices were Ford Raptor, Ram Rebel, Chevy Trailboss, Tundra TRD pro. GMC AT4. While the Ford is far superior, my wallet is not so Raptor was out and Tundra with awful gas mileage and dated designed had me begging for more also was priced high. Rebel and Trailboss were neck and neck and since I have six in my family that available bench seat option in the boss made it an easy choice. With 10k off MSRP and a generous trade by the Chevy dealer It made it all easy for me. I paid 42K and though it’s pretty basic I do have heated steering wheel and seats. I also take in to account resell value and reliability and historically speaking Chrysler products have not really been high on those charts. Subjectively speaking, my opinion, which apparently isn’t shared by most, is the Trailboss is the best looking truck on the road, at least until the 2022 Tundra drops with its much improved everything. I feel like the comfort and handling and ride is fantastic. Gas mileage is good around 18-19 overall. Plenty of power with 5.3 liter matched to 10 sod trans. Was very affordable. Resell is good and right now it’s worth 58k if you can believe that. Reliability feels above average which is acceptable. All the GM vehicles I’ve ever had have been reliable and this one really don’t have many bells and whistles. Sorry for the long comment. Just wanted to share my experience as a truck lover and buyer. With all that said when it comes to a truck in America I really don’t believe there is a bad choice available especially with the big 3.

      I have a warranty which is why I took a chance.....these are just honest opinions from lifetime truck owner since the 80s....
      I feel like Ram is for new gen of SUV owners converting to trucks....I could never get comfortable in my 21 GMC or Silverado which is why I switched... after owning both though Ram just feels cheaper even though I am in higher trim and more comfortable....

    IMHO, a two door pickup with an eight foot bed is not your typical multi-use daily driver, and is more of a purpose built vehicle intended for commercial duty. As such, it makes more sense that people in search of that particular configuration would be more inclined to look at three quarter and one ton pick-ups that can haul more in the bed, and take more of a beating.
