Skil 12v Brushless Drill vs Milwaukee Fuel Gen 2

  • A quick (for me) video comparing and testing the Skil 12v brushless drill and the Gen 2 Milwaukee Fuel.
    Skil model DL529001 (DL529002 as a 1 battery kit $80)
    Milwaukee model 2504-20 (2504-22 as a 2 battery kit $180)
    A buddy lent me this drill to try after being pretty impressed with it. Other than the protection circuits kicking in a little sooner, the Skil feels every bit as powerful as the Fuel which is high praise since the Fuel is pretty much tops in the 12v category.
    The Skil is quite a bit cheaper as well at less than half the cost for the kit, though the Milwaukee does have two batteries. I should add that the larger 4Ah battery comes in the Milwaukee kit, you don't have to get it separately. I forgot it's the Fuel impact driver that included two compact batteries in the kit.

    I have the Skil kit..its sweet. No bells and whistles like some but, the light on the drill is better than name brands, its on the base of the handle down by the battery...no shadow. Batteries are $29 and they have a usb port for charging phones or computer. The impact is just as good as Dewalt 12v but without the 801 Wobble

    One thing I absolutely hate about the m12 is the electronic clutch, at lower settings theres a huge trigger delay and that cut out with the setting just feels odd.. i like the traditional style clutch on the Skil
    Most often on the m12 I will just feather the trigger when driving fastners because i cannot stand that electric clutch but these 12v platforms really pack a punch for their size. Soo much soo that i rarely use my 18v drill or impact on most jobs.

    Just saw your video. A great comparison and I think it really depends on who’s using these tools.For the average homeowner/DIY (me) Skil has really upped it’s game and you cannot beat the prices. For the price of a similar bare-tool Milwaukee you can get a kit (battery and charger) from Skil. Obviously Milwaukee has the larger line and I think for a contractor/pro, especially with their 12v/18c combo charger that is the best way to go. For me though. After using and accomplishing a lot with my Black & Decker 20v Matrix system over the years, the Skil PwrCore 12 looks to be a winner. I am hoping they eventually expanded both the 12 and 20 lines to include a trim router, brad nailer and more to compete with Ryobi who currently has the largest DIY line.

    • @superspeeder

      Agreed! I have a ton of tools in the M12 lineup and that variety is why. BUT, for someone who just needs to cover the basics these Skil tools seem like very good value.
      If you haven’t heard, there’s a new line of pro tools coming from FLEX. This is another Chervon brand and will apparently be sold at Lowe’s. They’re gunning for the big dogs with a 24v battery platform.

      @@superspeeder I did just hear that from another TH-cam video. The light and speaker I could careless about, but they also have the Skil 5-1/2” circ saw for $99 that has a 4ah bat and another charger. And as pointed out, the Skil just feels better in my hand. The fact that Chervon who also owns Ego is bringing out the Flex line to Lowe’s show their commitment to battle the Milwaukee/Ryobi lines.

    Once you noticed how compact the grip with the battery in it on the M12 Milwaukee, there's no going back. The 18V style battery grip on the Skil defeat the purpose of having a compact 12V tool.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There’s no denying the compactness of the Milwaukee M12 tools, but there’s also no denying how fat the handles are. I’ve owned Bosch 12v tools too (same battery in grip design) and they’re even worse than the M12.
      If getting into the tightest places is your main priority then the M12 design might be best. If you favour a drill that’s comfortable to hold then the Skil is much better. Everyone will have their own take on ergonomics and how much weight to place on them.

      Ergonomics is the #1 issue I have with Milwaukee's M12 lineup. HOWEVER, I had Bosch 12V tools before I got into M12, and the Bosch is even worse because they turn the battery 180 degrees and the flat side of the fat handle is forward making it harder to grip.
      That being said, I still like Milwaukee's M12 tools a lot and I have a TON of them. They just have so many options and most of them, especially their Fuel models, are pretty good. For as many tools as I can tell, Skil is using sensorless brushless motors. The motor loses sensitivity at low speed, but delivers more torque with slightly lower current draw, and is virtually immune to dust fouling the sensors as there aren't any. This motor choice is what causes the hickup when you first pull the trigger as the controller has to index the motor position using voltage at the poles rather than with sensors. These are more common in RC in aircraft and trophy trucks as they are so resistant to dust and deliver slightly more power to weight ratio. Not common in rock crawlers, or track cars that want immediate torque response. All of these are geared down quite a lot, as the motors spin at over 20,000 RPM, so the loss in precision at low speed should be minimal. For a job site, the dust resistance may prove invaluable.

I have an m18 all fuel gen 3 impact, hammer drill, recip saw, circ 6 1/2 , d handle jigsaw, and random orbital sander. I love every one of those tools. I also have a bunch of ryobi stuff 18v but want to get some 12 volt stuff. With some of the deals Milwaukee has been running it’s been tempting, but I feel like I owe skil a shot. I had an issue with my miter saw. The arbor was off just a touch where if I was cutting at an angle with the bevel on a shorter piece of stock the blade would catch and launch it across my shop. I tried new blades, checked for bumps on the washers and determined it was the arbor. It’s rare that I use the bevel so I didn’t notice any issue until at least 3 months of having it. I finally had enough when a piece of stock blew threw a window in the back of my shop (thank God miters throw away from you) I called skil and expected to be told to bring it to one of their service centers for a tech to analyze, and I would have been ok with that, but nope the guy on the phone said “ I’m so sorry that’s been happening, you haven’t had it for that long so I’m going to send you a brand new miter saw” I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with any companies customer service. So I’ve been resisting the temptation to jump on some of these m12 deals and am waiting to find a good deal on a skil 12v drill and impact set. I honestly feel like I owe them a shot. And besides the issue that I had with the first miter saw I have been so impressed with the level of quality for the price I paid on both those saws. Skil is definitely doing something right, and standing behind their products so I’m gonna support that. Now I have never had a single issue with any Milwaukee tools, so there’s that, but if I did have a $600 dollar Milwaukee miter saw and had an issue would they have done the same as skil did with my $200 miter saw? 🤷

      True, 4Ah batteries work better with the Milwaukee, but I didn’t have the Skil 4Ah battery so I kept it even. As I mentioned, one of the advantages of the Milwaukee, its compact size, mostly goes away with the XC battery so that’s another reason for not using it.
      You’re right though, if the Skil doesn’t take advantage of larger batteries like the Milwaukee does then the difference could be greater.

      If I was starting into tools today I might even skip the 18v stuff for most applications. For larger tools like saws and rotary hammers, yes, 18v (and up) has its place. But smaller hand tools do quite well on 12v, and certainly most of what the typical homeowner would need.
      I’ve even heard a few pros admit they reach for 12v tools first.

    If you are going to own just one drill/driver, you need the hammer feature. Theres going to be a time when you need to drill into brick or concrete for a fastener. People think that all you need is a masonry bit and a drill to make a hole. They end up burning out all their bits. You need the hammer feature.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brick, block or mortar, yes, these “hammer” drills will do fine. Concrete? Not so much. As soon as you hit a piece of rock only the most powerful hammer drills will keep going at any meaningful pace. Most will just stop.
      Concrete requires a rotary hammer for any decent size hole. They have far more impact energy and can easily break through the aggregate in concrete.

      I found the Skil selector to be pretty firm, requiring a decent push to move, but it gives decent feedback when it's engaged. It's not hard but requires a deliberate action. This tool was brand new as well, so it might loosen up a bit with use.
      My M12 Fuel drill is easier to move and feels good going into speed 2, but going into speed 1 it's kinda mushy with little feedback. Seems to work fine though, just not as "positive" as the Skil.

    You say the electronic clutch is a nice thing about the Milwaukee, but if the purpose of the clutch is to protect from overdriving into delicate material or prevent stripping screw heads, then the mechanical clutch of the Skil works better. Notice that the Milwaukee turned at least a quarter of a turn before stopping, but the clutch on the Skil slipped immediately. If you're drilling at high speed, the Milwaukee might end up taking several turns before it stops, destroying your material or screw head.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a point about high speed fastening, where the drive train inertia could continue to drive a screw past where the torque limit is reached. However, the Milwaukee has some electronic trickery going on that I haven't had a chance to fully evaluate; when softer clutch settings are chosen the drill ramps up to speed much slower, leading me to believe they have thought about this. Like I said, I haven't really played with it to figure out all the subtleties of how it reacts to different situations. Also, if I'm driving something critical that would be light enough to be affected by that inertia (like cabinet hinge screws) I usually go pretty slow.
      The clutch on the Skil seems to work well, but it is a mechanical clutch and in my personal experience they are not trustworthy when it comes to fine work. I'd much rather slow down and finesse the screw with the trigger.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you referring to the Milwaukee chuck clicks? If so, that’s not a clutch, it’s some sort of ratcheting mechanism to keep it tight. The Milwaukee has no mechanical clutch at all, it uses current limiting to reduce torque.

    • @jamesfair9751
      @jamesfair9751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clicks were the ratcheting chuck lock lmao it allows you to really connect bits tight and they can’t vibrate loose.

    • @superspeeder
      @superspeeder  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      There’s no denying the Milwaukee’s metal chuck is more heavy duty than the Skil’s plastic chuck, and yes Milwaukee has a pretty good track record. But there’s also no denying the Milwaukee is twice the price. That’s a BIG deal to most people, and will the Milwaukee last TWICE as long?
      The aggressive nature of their battery protection (letting the tool almost stall before cutting power) tells me it may not, given the strain it allows the user to put on the tool and battery.
      Don’t be fooled by all the marketing hype on Milwaukee tools... “Red Lithium”, “Power State Motor”, “Red Link Intelligence”, those are all fancy words to describe the Chinese circuits in the tool that are all likely similar to what Skil is using.
      I love my M12 tools, and I own most of the M12 lineup. They’re great tools but Milwaukee sure charges a pretty penny for most of them, especially the Fuel models.

      Michael Meredith, in my testing the tools felt about equally powerful. The difference was the Milwaukee had a more aggressive tuning of the protection circuit that allows you to nearly stall the tool before cutting out. That aggressive stall will be very hard on the tool.
