Probably The Best Whisky Investments of 2022

  • If you are looking for some bottles to invest in for 2022 what should you buy? These are my top 3 bottles - and I have personally bought all of these for my collection. While these might not be the rollercoaster of the Folio series of Springbanks, they are hugely undervalued in my opinion on the primary and secondary market.
    These are my opinions only and as with all 'investments' the value can go up as well as down.

    MISTAKE CORRECTION: 4:14 - I say Springbank, then Macallan, then Springbank. Fail. I meant to say Springbank, and then Macallan. Both the Springbank 25 2021 (see here www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/auctions/176-the-132nd-auction/564141-springbank-25-year-old-2021-release/) and the Macallan 25 2021 (see here www.thegrandwhiskyauction.com/lot-371794/macallan-25-year-old-sherry-oak-2021/auction-41) are hugely over the price of the Glenfarclas!

  • @andrewmckay2037
    @andrewmckay2037 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The difference is Springbank is on another level in unique production, small batches, high quality control, non chill filtered, natural colour and completely different league to glenfarclas. Whisky nuts are going for what's actually in tge bottle as opposed to brand and boxes... A shift has started. The industry is going to change a lot in the coming years...

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hmmmm, Glenfarclas are also unique production (family owned like Springbank and run NOWHERE near capcity like Springbank), non chill filtered, natural colour etc.
      They are very similar on so many levels.
      Look at Whisky Fun - www.whiskyfun.com/Glenfarclas.html - there are some incredibly well reviewed bottles there.
      Indeed - Serge ranked Springbank and Glenfarclas both as 'Premier Cru' back in 2013 - www.whiskyfun.com/indexation.html
      GF and SB are both very similar distilleries IMO...

    You’ve made me laugh Mark. Myself and my whisky buddy came to the same conclusions you’ve made here. We’ve killed the 30 and 40 on a number of occasions so have arguably increased the rarity value commensurately. I think visiting the Distillery made me overcome any doubts as to the pricing differences. You don’t really get to taste 30 + 40 year old whisky as a walk in. As for what else I’m looking at, everything feels very bubble like. Saying that I’ve been dipping into sensibly priced English Whisky. Thanks for the video.

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha, amazing. It still baffles me how a distillery can have a 'core range' 30YO and 40YO - they have such a depth of stock it is amazing! I agree with the bubble too - look at the myriad of NAS releases lately - it is arguably the greater fool theory...most buyers are ONLY buying becasue of the value jumps.

    Brand brand brand, it’s like real estate location location location. I couldn’t agree more that they are more than likely fantastic whisky’s but we don’t live in a world where people actually care about the quality of a product. All that matters to people that are buying these sort of bottles is bragging rights ONLY!

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree with this - and for the life of me can't fathom why the Glenfarclas brand is not stronger. The best comparison is Springbank - also family owned, priced at 'drinking prices', focus on quality rather than volume etc. All that needs to change is the perception from the market...as such I feel that Glenfarclas is prime for a 'hype' moment. Like I say in the video I dont think this will be overnight, but maybe in the next 3-5 years.

      I bought a 25 year old Glenfarclas about 25 years ago in a beautiful wooden “coffin” for about $150. The bottle looks like one of the warehouse collection bottles. I can’t find it in Whiskybase and I don’t think it has increased in value at all in 25 years. Glenfarclas may be the best value for drinking aged whiskey but unless it sports a distillation year on it, it’s value will only increase negligibly. Glenfarclas can’t be compared at all to Springbank. Comparing Springbank to Glenfarclas is like comparing a fine Krug Champagne to a good Spanish red. They are in a different class and that’s why they are valued differently (and will always be). I wish it weren’t true but it is.

    Really liked this vid. Are the Springbank 25 and 30 YR old not limited supply runs? I believe the 30 may be 1400 bottles. Not sure what sort of size of release the GF 30 is but would imagine many times that figure? hence the much lower price if you were to auction compared to Springbank.

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey - glad you liked the vid 😀 Sure - I think you just have to look outiside the box a little. ALL releases are limited - it's just whether the distillery chooses to declare this as a marketing ploy. As such the GF will be limited in numbers - it's just that we don't know to what extent (i.e. they only bottle a certain number of bottles each year).
      The most important thing to bear in mind with all of this is that it's got very little to do with the whisky or how limited it is - but more how it is perceived by the collectors.
      Springbank is a great example. The 2018 25 Year Old was released c. £300.
      2018 Average Price: £336
      2019 Average Price: £388
      2020 Average Price: £347
      2021 Average Price: £560
      2022 Average Price: £840
      Most recent auction price: £1,650 ( www.wvawhiskyauctions.co.uk/lot-450721/springbank-25-year-old-2018-release )
      Same with the 2020 25 YO Springbank
      2020 Average Price: £392
      2021 Average Price: £537
      2022 Average Price: £1568
      Msot recent auction price: £1,400 www.scotchwhiskyauctions.com/auctions/177-the-133rd-auction/570909-springbank-25-year-old-2020-release/
      You'll note with both that the demand has only JUST come.
      It's not like the collectors always loved this whisky - you can clearly see their perception change in the market. And this is what I feel will happen with the GF bottles. My call about the GF today is similar to me making the call on the SB2018 25 in 2019. This won't be a quick change - but it will come 😉

    Is the 25 year old Whisky in the decanter the same Whisky that's in the standard bottles?

  • @GM-cp1th
    @GM-cp1th 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Interesting analysis. I agree that GF shares similar qualities to that of Springbank and for some wired reason I cannot understand, that most of their release are way cheaper for their ages compare to even non-collectible distilleries. So hands down they are underappreciated. However, one of the key aspects we need to look at is collectibility and distinguishability (e.g. release year, Batch numbers, released in series..etc). I think that is the primary reason why Macallan 25 and 30yr are now released with a release date after 2017 release. I am not saying that this is the only virtue of "collectible whisky" but it does definitely help. Do these GF 25, 30, 40 carries any release date? If they release them in the same packaging without any cues to distinguish batch to batch, I wonder if they will ever be collectible in the future...

    • @GM-cp1th
      @GM-cp1th 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just checked from WhiskyBase that they do carry bottle code. But I always wondered if collectors do not really count bottles as "release date" as it is not directly on the label. for example, Macallan 18 gains 50~100 GBP per year in release date but Springbank 18 doesn't as it is not directly written on the label. I wonder what your thought one this. will our perception change in the future?

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey - I hope you are well and thanks for your thoughts. Factors such as limited edition numbers, release years etc are perceived to be important - hence why almost every releases from the new/younger distilleries carry all sorts of nonsense on the labels to attract a certain demographic.
      You're exactly right too - The 30 and 40 do not carry edition numbers or release years - they are core range bottles. That said, I find it hard to conceive that GF will continue this packaging line indefinately. Ditto that even though they have a HUGE depth of stock, their current inventory of 25, 30 and 40yo stock will be based on historic and current sales volumes. If collectors get on board and start buying for the sake of buying and not drinking (ahem, Springbank 30YO) then stock will run down. And there is no way to make any more high age statement whisky without a lot of time.
      I think in the long term we'll be looking at GF with different eyes. Perhaps there will be a change of direction from the top, maybe the distillery will be sold (in these times almost anything is possible). A few years ago I never would have siad GF would use fancy decanters and design gorgeous packaging for their bottles, but these bottles mark a change of direction already. Look at the difference that Billy Walker has made at Glenallachie or what Aston Martin to to Bowmore whiskies.
      So in summary, I agree - these bottles lack a few kep components BUT they also tick a lot of other boxes. Over the long term (I think I say 3-5 years in the video) I feel they will be great buys though.

    I think what I a lot of people don't realize is that the older Glenfarclas are one of the cheapest in the market, which makes it one of the most drunk older age statement whiskies out there, meaning less availability, whereas all these other "flipper bottles" are kept to obviously flip for profit, so availability is more common

      Hi Dan - thank you - glad you liked the video! I agree too - how can a product that takes, 25, 30 and 40 years to make still sell for so little...Who knows where the market will go, but with the huge investments from the parent companies it seems to be only heading in one direction. Given that GF are family owned there is less pressure to appease share holders etc, but look at Springbank. They price for 'drinkers' but doing so only attracts flippers...I'm not sure why these bottles don't fly out any quicker...

    I'd probably invest in a 2020 Macallan 25 sherry, the outrun in 2020 must have surely been at a reduced level. And if you look at auction entries for this particular bottle and also the 18 sherry there has been nowhere near the amount of previous years or indeed 21/22 auction entries.
    Probably worth researching.

    I agree, in the grand scheme of whisky pricing, all 3 are for whatever reason massively underpriced. I have several 30s from them, never paid more than 250 euros… Perhaps one day…. who knows! Certainly no mistake in buying any of them. The way things are going, there may soon enough be less and less of such ages released any of us not so wealthy people could ever afford… The 40 is tempting…. I may just go searching! Thanks for the tip….

      Hey Anthony - glad you liked the video and glad you have plenty of these on your shelves! Glenfarclas have amazing reserves of stock but who knows what could happen if the 'market' realises what good whisky it is and how unedrvalued it is. I mean that 40YO is less than a third of the recent Distill Your World. Clearly the brands are on different pedestals, but compared objectively the GF is unbelievaby undervalued.

    Last year I was scoffed at for asking which was the best investment between this Glenfarclas 25 & Macallan 18 Sherry Oak Cask. Wish I hadn't listened and bought the 25 year old. Also I do believe that there is a new release over a 5 year period

    • @MarkLittler

      This market is very much driven by the greater fool theory. There is nothing wrong with the Macallan 18YO - I collect them - and in the short term they will likely be the better investment. But if you soften your focus and look 3-5 years down the line, IMO these bottles are going to shine.

    I really like your videos, they are well informed and well made. I can see for sure how the 25 year old Glenfarclas might be a good investment - great whisky, great bottle and packaging and a limited release. I am not yet totally convinced about the 30 and 40 year olds though. No doubt the whisky is fantastic and the packaging is second to none. But unlike Macallan and Springbank the older bottlings do not seem to have any batch or yearly issue to distinguish them. With the Springbank we all know that trying to buy one of the older ones when they are issued at RRP is virtually impossible and their website states how many are issued worldwide for each older age so they immediately assume a rarity value. The same to some extent with The Macallan although their runs are huge, they still sell out extremely quickly. With Glenfarclas the 30 and 40 year olds are part of their core range and as far as I can see there is no yearly issue or batch to distinguish them. That being the case, why would such bottlings increase in value if they remain available albeit only at specialist retailers, at the RRP?

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Martin, I'm glad you like the videos!
      Sure - I can see your perspective on this. In the video I state that these are 3-5 year holds.
      With regards to your point about them being core range I completly agree. BUT. First of all, how absurd and feasable is a 30 and 40YO core range expression...while they are core range at present we have no idea how long that core range is exptected to last. Look at the Macallan 30 Blue box - that was core range - no date etc on it, but now commands a huge premium.
      As such while there is a tendancy at the moment for people to only look at the market in the 'now' I always look with a softer focus at the wider picture. Whose to say that next year there won't be a release year...or a change in ABV (the change in ABV is enough for Local Barley collectors ;) ).
      The other side to the 30 and the 40 is their sheer value - Benromach 40YO is £2k, Balvenie 40YO is £5k, Fettercain 40YO £3k, Caol Ila 40YO (Indy bottled by Hunter Laing) £1,500, Bunnahabhain 40YO £1800.
      Only the Balvenie in the above stands up in presentation alongside the GF in my opinion too.
      And I think my bigger point here is that the WHOLE GF distillery is due a perspective shift. For such a legendary distillery with incredible depths to its inventory it is well under valued in my opinion.
      Sorry this post wasn't meant to sound ranty - so sorry if it comes across that way!

  • @oliverphilp4207
    @oliverphilp4207 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'm a big fan of Glenfarclas, much as I am of Springbank. Despite their geographical distance, both distilleries share much in common, e.g. historical family ownership, a healthy respect for tradition, at least one direct-fired still, floor maltings, etc. Although popular with whisky geeks, until recently I would have argued both distilleries would probably never be the targets of investors and collectors for the simple reason that the presentation of their releases is bland, with dumpy bottles and plain labels. I even once bought and drank a Glenfarclas 40 (at £260). I would now be more wary of making this claim, having witnessed the recent inexplicable clamour for Springbank. However Springbank is a fairly unique distillery within its region, whereas Speyside is full of contenders to the Macallan crown - Glendronach, Mortlach, Aberlour, Glenallachie, etc. Essentially you're predicting that Glenfarclas will be the next break-out whisky but it's a fairly busy field. All that said, Glenfarclas does have a lot going for it and the presentation of the bottles you highlight is light years from a few years ago. I have a couple of the Warehouse 30 stashed away, purchased at £250 each, so I do hope you are correct! Thanks for the video.

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Oliver - I completely agree - I think until these bottles GF whisky was not attractive to collectors because of the presentation - very much a case of 'lets just redesign part of the label'. I can't help but think that these new boxes mark somewhat of a departure for GF. I'm not sure who was responsible for it - but it's great.
      I also totally agree with you on the Springbank comparison. Both are very much 'anti marketing' but for some reason there has been a distinct spike with SB of late.
      You're right though - nothing will change with GF overnight, but perhaps in the next 3-5 years things will change dramatically. Look at Macallan 5 years ago - Folio 1 languishing at £250 at the distillery...

    Hi Mark, great video and advice! I wondered what you think about the investment potentials of Edradour whiskies?
    They're probably the smallest distillery in Scotland, with only 3 people crafting their whiskies and with production in very limited volume. They also produce intense sherry cask whisky without chill filtration or colouring added, at lower prices than even Glenfarclas. I feel they have the hallmarks of a truly undervalued whisky distillery for investment at the moment. Is it a distillery worth looking at? Thanks.

    • @MarkLittler
      @MarkLittler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey - I think they are owned by Signatory Vintage so are never really going to have the reach of Diageo or Edrington etc brands.

    If he believes these are the best investments he’s undoubtedly investing in them too…. Probably the very bottles on display. No harm in promoting your own investments I guess!

      Hey - I', glad you liked the video. Sure, I have bought these bottles, they will stay in my colection until my son is 18 (13 years away!). I feel that if my video was to have any weight then I would have had to at least put my money where my mouth was! Do you collect any bottles?

    You cannot pump a price of anything just because you think it is under valued. You can sit on that 40 year old bottle another 40 years and it may even lose value. Just drink it with friends and family and be happy.

      Lmao, with inflation the way it is, u can't ever lose value on anything. Here in Canada the 25 just went from $269 to $340 over night

    the 35 years is out! now 👍🏻😃 I bought the 30,35,40 😉 BLADNOCH 30 Years also ticks all the boxes: 30 years, sherry cask, 950 pieces, Nick Savage, a killer wooden and leather package and heavy underpriced! a must buy!

    Sorry, but this is a lot of nonsense.
    You probably have to study the matter of brands (brand recognition, brand valuation, etc.) in order to recalibrate your statements.
    It is simply not true to say: look, people are paying a lot more for Springbank 25, so buy Glenfarclas 25 - because it is a bargain.
    With the same argumentation you could say: look, people are paying a lot more for a Rolex watch, compared to an Omega watch. So get out and buy as much Omega watches as you can and you will get rich.
    Or with the same argumentation you could say: look, people are paying considerably more for Coca Cola compared to no name Coke from the retailer. Buy more retailer coke - because it is a good investment.
    That is nonsense.
    Glenfarclas - beside considerable batch variations - has always been the Volkswagen in the whisky industry: decent quality with decent pricing. But it is NOT a premium brand.
    And just by releasing premium products, you do not get a premium brand - see VW Pheaton.
    May be you google the word "goodwill" to understand what brand valuation is about, how tricky it is and maybe you come to the conclusion that Glenfarclas will never be Springbank or Macallan.
    Brands are valuable. This is why the valuation of e.g. cars, art, cigars, watches, etc. extremely differs.
    Conclusion: Is Glenfarclas whisky any good? Yes! Will the older expressions increase in price over time? Yes! Will its brand and the valuation of its whisky respectively reach the recognition and valuation of Springbank? No!

      Funny, because before springbank had its run up to what it is today, people all over forums had the same sentiment as you are having with GF

    If anybody ask you “wich whisky should I invest”… run from him, block his number and never talk to this greddy person again. Because of that people whisky has these insane prices

      But what about the industry that specifically markets bottles to this demographic. Why is everything a limited edition now if not to appeal to collectors. What good do fancy decanters and boxes make to the profile of the whisky. While I agree with your sentiment the industry is also complicit in the changes we have witnessed.
