    On August 3rd 2019 I was driving down to El Paso, TX with my family from Las Cruces, New Mexico. We were on our way with my children to purchase them school clothes for the upcoming school year. Our plans were to shop at Cielo Vista Mall but we were making a pit stop at the Walmart right next to the mall on gateway boulevard. Something seemed off on our way there driving through the highway. Even my mother who was with us at the time stated to me that something felt wrong and began to pray. I made a stop at a gas station and to fill up and had noticed that my front tire was low on air pressure. As I'm topping off my front tire my mother receives a phone call from my sister frantically asking where we're at. I can hear my sister crying in the background asking us to please turn back because she's seen posts on Facebook about an active shooter at that certain Walmart and everyone was being evacuated from the Walmart and the mall which is the next building over. If we of had not stopped at that gas station I would have been inside that Walmart with my two children and my senior citizen mother. We drove back to Las Cruces not knowing what was going on and upon arriving home the news being broadcast was that there was many casualties. I made a vow to myself as a father to never be unprepared for this type of situation ever. My heart and prayers go out to those affected in this incident. Always be aware of your surroundings because Satan never sleeps!

      Seems so dramatic when he’s talking about it but if you have spent any time in a rough area , I would bet that you already do all these things without even thinking about it . Just a quick glance or two around and a couple thoughts through your head. Really takes seconds at most.

    I hate large public area with lots of people.. sends my mind into overload trying to keep up with everything going on at all times. That person who like to share your pants in the checkout line really bothers me.. my wife finally understands why I’m happy to wait an extra 20min for a table at a restaurant just to get a corner booth where I can observe the entire room. One day at a place where I can’t even have a pocket knife like disney is the worst.. takes me days after to recover from the mental exhaustion. Actually had a women walk into the back of me the other morning walking out of a gas station cause I stopped at the door to look both ways before walking out.. she of course was occupied on her phone texting paying no attention to anything!

    I'm far from an expert on crime, but I've read a little, and clearing the corners as you left really stood out to me. Someone loitering there watching the shoppers leave would probably go unnoticed by - well, by most of the people _entering,_ honestly, but certainly by like 99.9% of people leaving. They'd be free to pick a mark at their leisure, then follow them to their car and take them completely by surprise before they were ready to actually leave.

      Agree.

      @WJS774 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It strikes me as the most dangerous point of the visit. On the way in, people are congregating, and it's less likely that anyone will try anything overt with a lot of people around. As you said, pickpockets are more of a concern there and that's not typically life-threatening. On the way out, though, people are dispersing, which is the best time for a smart criminal to follow you to a secluded spot.

Any tips on reducing your chances of being pickpocketed, or reducing the damage done? Also, in public places I tend to look out for potential active shooters (to a lesser degree due to their infrequency of occurrence). Any specific threat indicators of an active shooter/terrorist come to mind?

    Wow! Pickpockets? @4:15, I would not have thought about that. It reminds me how lovely and prevalent our shared peace and prosperity is here in this beautiful country. I'm so used to watching the reliable and ubiquitous threats in Brazil, I guess I underestimate the same common threats here in the States.

    Mail too. I have to pick up my mail down the road, I throw it on the seat and make sure the addresses are facing down when going to the store. I don't know why, it just makes sense.

      I do the same thing if I have mail or any paper with my name/address on it in the car. I thought I was just being paranoid... :-)

      @@epickett63 now I open the mailbox, spray lysol, close it up and come back later. That might be paranoid. Or extreme caution.

    Hop in the car, lock the doors. Start the engine, buckle up seat belts, and turn on running lights. Look around and back out, or drive forward if you parked in that configuration, proceed to destination.

    5:05 Not off-duty, not Brazilian. The woman in red , however, has excellent situational awareness and is keeping her ASP covered! She is obviously subscribed to this channel. Merry Christmas John and hope to be able to comment again on the main channel in the new year! (Less swearing in 2018!)

    Great information as usual but you didn't mention or advise to utilize the technique you used of tactically parking your vehicle for swift egress and evasion.
