Situational Awareness - Transitional Spaces

  • You might save a few seconds by busting out your cell phone and pulling up your shopping list while you're walking to the store, but is it worth it? Being situationally aware in those transitional spaces is possibly the most important time to do so. Yeah crimes happen inside of these 'safe spaces' such as your house, the store, church, a restaurant, etc - but they happen way more often when you're on the way there.
    Transitional spaces (such as parking lots) are opportune places for criminals to take advantage of unsuspecting victims. By simply being aware of your surroundings, you are lessening the chance that you'll ever even have to draw a gun in the first place. Watch the whole video to find out why.

    Great vid. In the military when you go outside the wire there's the 'hard target' concept. It's basically you want to exude a confident aura about your squad that basically signals 'If you fuck with us you will die' and a huge part of it is looking alert and looking mean.

    On the first point regarding getting off your phone and being aware, your one hundred percent correct. Staying aware in a parking lot or garage and the like will also make you aware of CARS. You are far more likely to be struck by a car than robbed and I've seen case after case of distracted walkers walking straight into a cars lane of travel.

    I'm a fully grown man and I lock my doors as soon as I get in the car. It's not just a tip for women. If that door is closed it should be locked too. That's the #1 time to get car jacked.

      I do the same thing. As soon as the doors shut, they get locked.

      We are the same way- lock it immediately while being aware situationally. We couldn't believe people don't lock it. Just sit in there in a car with the door unlocked! It's like not locking your house door.

      Agreed. Lock start the car and get moving immediately. Don't bloody well use the car as your office. That text or clearing a voice mail can wait.

    Great video and glad you are covering this in a series. I'm always noticing details and quizzing myself on what I saw, i.e. What color shirt did the lady in front of me in line have on? What was the license plate on the car that passed in front of me exiting the store? I also quiz the kiddos. Just taking 5 seconds of observing your surroundings before getting out of your vehicle is worth it. Pat McNamara covers this in his book The Sentinel.

    Great topic and great points. Since my daughter was born, I started practicing this stuff like it's my profession, and I can remember distinctly two times when I am sure I made eye contact with somebody who was looking for a victim. Both times we were not chosen and I don't know how much of that was because I made eye contact or because he could tell that I was making plans to deal with the situation that exact moment when we noticed each other, but either way, I'm grateful.

    On point! Lots of good tips in here.
    To add to the point you made about smiling and making eye contact with potential criminals...I used to work for a large supermarket chain in the SE United States. In order to reduce shoplifting, employees were taught to simply offer premier customer service by smiling and acknowledging each customer. If a bad guy thinks you're on to him, he's less likely to commit a crime.

    .. in all seriousness though, great video brother!
    Also, just on situational awareness (nothing violent) .. I work in construction. Our job site was GMU and we had to close a sidewalk, put signs, barriers, etc. We watched as 9 out 10 students walked into the barriers (one even did flip over it!!! 🤣) ... I SHIT YOU NOT, wish I recorded this. The 10th person that DIDN'T walk into it? It was a BLIND GUY!

    *As long as you are alert, aware, I could see having someone (friend, family) on the other end of the phone to tell them where you are and if something happens they could call 912 whereas you might be unable to. Just a thought, maybe wrong.*
    And now, 6 years later we should ALL have ear buds!

    Regarding your point about making eye contact with strangers -- I would add that by looking directly at people's faces and making that eye contact, a thug crossing your path will realize that you will remember his face and what he looked like, and that you will be able to more easily identify him to the police after an assault. You would be able to identify him by seeing a mugshot, picking him out of a lineup and even helping a police sketch artist to draw his picture (assuming you had opportunities to do any of those things). Knowing that he could easily be identified would be an additional deterrent to him, making him look instead for a victim who's paying no attention to him.

    I was sitting in the parking lot with my windows down eating a milkshake when I noticed that a black SUV pulled up and three black males got out and the driver stayed in. One came walking straight to my car while the other two spread out through the parking lot. I immediate pulled my jacket behind my gun so I could access it easier and I pulled it out of the holster a tad. He came straight to my window and began talking to me, the whole time while my hand was on my gun. I kept looking around to make sure the other two guys weren't coming around the other side. All he wanted was for me to sample cologne, but I refused and he got mad at me but I told him to go away and he did. I work at the jail in that county and he actually looked familiar, but it could have just been the adrenaline flowing in the moment while all the thoughts were going through my head. Situational awareness is important

      I do look around like everyone is out to get me when I walk around in my sheriff's uniform. I always feel like I'm going to get shot in the back or somthing, of course everyone stares at someone with a badge, uniform, and dirt belt so everyone looks at you and says hey. One reason I hate wearing my uniform in public

    • @Brandonx-nb7rv
      @Brandonx-nb7rv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Forensic Wow nah, actually since this incident, I have been a police officer for a year and a half. The most in North Carolina you would get is misdemeanor assault by pointing a gun and maybe misd communicating threats, which if it isn’t witnessed by a police officer, the victim will have to go press charges at the magistrates office and if the magistrate finds probable cause for the crime, for a private warrant, they will usually only issue a criminal summons to court which has to be served and it basically just like a ticket, or what it sounds, a “summons” to court and the victim would have to be there to testify over it and if the victim doesn’t want to come to court, it will be dropped. In NC, we don’t charge people for misdemeanors that happened outside of our presence except in a few exceptions.
      Now I still would not suggest pointing a gun at someone for that reason and I do not think that you could articulate a deadly threat just based i these circumstances, but if you were to pull a gun, the consequences legally would be very minor

    Great video/topic. One other place I noticed is on your own garage when you open the garage door and getting in your car. When I realized this I started backing into my garage so I am always facing the outside, even when getting in.
    Also, early in the video looks like a king Soopers in my town, do you live in or near the front range in CO?

    Funny, at work this morning I was talking about an Eagle River, Ak couple that was followed home after using the ATM at the fuel station and then robbed in front of their house when they got out of their car, I was pining similar things in regards to situational awareness and transitional spaces. It definitely comes more naturally to some of us, but is something to always exercise.
    Btw it happened about 7:30pm Tuesday night and the police caught the robbers 30 minutes later because the guy had the track my phone option on and so police were able to gather in number and then take the robbers down in a relatively safe space (a gas station parking lot)

    You are right Mike...Several years ago I went into a seven eleven store to get my pregnant wife a Orange juice and a couple of you guys were in the store acting nervous...They were just standing over near the Soda pop coolers..Which isn't against the law...I bought her the juice and I bought me a Mt.Dew and left the store...On the way back home we passed the store and cops were all over it...I stopped and asked an Officer what happened...He told me the clerk had been robbed and killed...I later found out the two had robbed and killed the clerk...I was very lucky the real clerk was dead in the back room and the third had acted as the clerk...I'm very lucky that I was Killed...It could have happened in a second...Have a great day Mike...

    I've noticed that the way I dress, usually hoodies, beenies, worn out cloths like torn jeans, it seems the sketchier people I've passed by don't really pay as much attention to me. But they really eyeball the people walking in with 5.11 tactical clothes & tucked in shirts & the preppy girl with her skinny jeans. Always considered my worn hoodie as sort of "Urban Camouflage".

    @TroutWest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eye contact does not always tell a potential criminal that you're "not a victim" People are sizing you up just like you size them up. It's not the guy you see that's the problem, it's the guy you DON'T see that is. If you watch Active Self Protection on TH-cam you will see a lot of videos where there are multiple attackers commiting these crimes now. The days of the mugger with a switchblade are over.. now its' 3 dudes with pistols that blind side you with a pipe first. If you get to your car, you should never lock your doors and then do anything BUT drive away!! Drive. Don't sit in your car with your head down, that's another great way to get robbed or killed.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As with most recommendations in life, these are generalizations - 3 guys waiting for you with pistols and pipes is (though not unheard of) not the 'norm' when it comes to most crimes of opportunity. With everything in life, there is a starting point, and more advanced 'techniques' - this video is geared more towards the foundational principles of situational awareness.

    • @TroutWest
      @TroutWest 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah always variations to what's possible with criminals. The key is to never assume it happens one way or the other. A lot of times, people say "that's the first time that's happened around here"

    Wow! So i clicked on a video about a backpack i thought seamed to be cool by the title (which it was) and went to the channel to hopefully see other similar videos and came across a few interesting videos such as this one. Now i know i can't change anyone's mind nor am i attempting to this is just a comment about more clarity i am getting i thought i would share. As i am watching this video all i can think about is how extremely successful (the powers that be) are in manipulating the minds using fear to control people and the Population causing divisions all from a fear based seed planted through multiple channels of media, advertisements, etc. There is a very thin line between self defense and paranoia which leads us into acting based off fear and causing heartache. Which makes me wonder a lot of times when i am watching the news or have weird interactions personally, LIKE WOW THAT'S THE REAL VICTIM because to be mentally taken advantage of (tought & persuaded) to the point to where we think of violence or defense before help, peace, or love is a serious mind screw, however i do understand it's not in the best (profitable) intrest to spread love and unity, i guess being safe is good too. Lol. I do like your videos i've seen and peace and love to anyone who happens to read, like, dislike, love and hate this comment i do understand it's necessary for these times we are in and being stirred towards so trust me i understand and can handle the love, hate, and misunderstanding.

    • @LastLineOfDefense
      @LastLineOfDefense  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I spread a lot of love (and peace) in my day-to-day life - happiness and joy as well. If a crazed person with hate in their heart rolls into a restaurant wanting to shoot a bunch of people up, or if a scumbag in a dark alleyway wants to do somebody harm - peace and love isn't the answer in that moment... well, unless I feel like letting those I love, and myself, die.
