My issue was mysterious coolant leak and wet carpets on the driver side. The T-25 screw securing the coolant pipes was loose, and water was leaking from this place when the temperature reached about -15 Celcius and the car was parked. But new heater core and o-rings are now installed, there are no leaks, and the volvo is ready for higher milages. This video was of great help, thank you!
Thank you for this video I remember it saved me $1200 dollars back in 2015 when I had my first Volvo (1996 850 T5 platinum edition)and was 21 didnt have much money but I had the will power and was handy with tools. Once I did this job I really went all out and fixed 95% of my Volvos problems. I still have the car to this day. But I have also bought a 2003 Volvo xc70 and they've both been wonderful to me. Thanks for the video and for keep a Beautiful Volvo on the road by allow me to fix and keep it all these years.
Nice video. Thank you. Pinching off the heater hoses, looked like a lot trouble and they were hard to reach. I left all the hoses connected and caught about a gallon of anti-freeze in heavy-duty trash bag. That worked well with no leaks or spills.
Great video, Ken - saved me £1300 (!!) from my (UK) Volvo main dealer quote. Never tackled heater system before but this gave me the confidence to try and succeed first time. Well done. Volvo V70 1998 2.5 Tdi.
Great info. Thanks for the instruction. It helped me fix my Volvo coolant leaking issue. One thing I'd like to mention is: the heater core can also be pulled out and put in from driver side. The nuts on knee bolster of my car were very tough to dealt with. So I did all from driver side.
Wish I would have found this video about a week ago - I ended up busting the plastic bulkhead fitting (interface btwn inside and outside) and had to replace. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.
Excellent video. My sons 1999 s70 was leaking antifreeze so I checked youtube and your video came up. I followed it to a T and I was able to change it out in about an hour. Can't thank you enough.
Great video. I followed it to the letter on my '98 S70 and it took me less than an hour start to finish. It really is as easy as it looks and it sure is nice not to have that antifreeze smell in car any more. Thanks!
Thanks for awesome video and explanation. Did installation this morning, took me 2 hours and everything went as expected. Did not have hose pliers, so I took a spare hose and connected upper and lower ports on the engine bay side. Did the trick. Tip: Put some grease on o rings to prevent premature cracks
i love this. learned a lot. will do it in my 97 850 t5. you can tell that you want everybody to take care of their volvo rather than than just getting the job done.
Very useful video. Had it next to me on my laptop when I did the replacing. The one thing I'd like to point out though that might worry some one how to do is the fact that you really don't have to clamp off the heater hoses under the hood. I didn't have any tools for that, so I just put a trash bag under the pipes that connect to the heater core, the amount of antifreeze that came out was about maybe 0,2 litres, which isn't much at all. Other than that, really useful video.
Hey man, thank you so much. I may not have tried this repair if I hadn't seen this video. It is a great description from start to finish. Sharing your knowledge and experience with us completely took all the doubt and anxiety out of the deal.
Thank you for a quick, informative and easy to see what your doing video. Smaller Vice Grips worked great for clamps. I did manage to get the job done without removing the glove box or knee bolster.
One thing to note though, on turbo cars the coolant lines into the firewall are harder to get to. Also, with the clamp you guys sell, it can only clamp one hose at a time. I ended up claming just the top hose at the firewall, then I popped the coolant reservoir out of it's holder, unplugged the sensor and just set the reservoir down upside down so it wouldn't drain into the system. With this I only lost a few cups of coolant when I unhooked the core. A towel right below the pipes caught it all.
Thank you for the great video! I am going to do it, but don't know what it means to 'heat cycle' the car. I have a 1998 Volvo v70xc. Can you please advise?
I have a 1990 Volvo 740 and anted to know how to bypass the heater core at the rear of the engine block not near the firewall. What are the sizes of the pipes coming out of the rear of the block and what are the parts that I need?
great video, but cant seem to reattacht the two screws start that tighten the heater hose flange to the firewall--cant see down there--screws spin forever! any ideas? 2000 v70xc
Brilliant, made a virtually impossible job possible. Good filming, good dialog. I had the job to do on a right hand drive car and it was still relevant. I am not sure how dry I will be able to get the carpet, the foam rubber underneath it absorbs the coolant like a sponge. Even after a couple of months in the hot Australian sun it was saturated.
I have a 98 S70 and the Torx 25 screw is on the opposite side (between the coolant lines). any idea how to get this tightened?! is there a special tool?
I saw this video it is informative. I have 92 Volvo (740 Turbo wagon). Need to replace the heater core. Is it similar to this video? Any suggestion how to install it if different from this one. Thanks.
+Themostpower Symptoms matched extremly well, dissapearing coolant which cant be traced and residue on the windshield which is annoying as hell and hard to get rid!
Great video. One suggestion: tell the users to clamp their hoses BEFORE removing the Torx bolt holding the core to the pipes! If someone were to follow the video "as is", they'd lose all their antifreeze before getting to clamp the hoses!
Hey ipd, any idea about a 940 heater core replacement? My 940 heater core is leaking all over the foot well carpets. I have disconnected the hose on the outside leaving the car with no heat. The process of replacing a 940 heater core seems to involve a lot more process compared to a 850/70?
BTW, if the foam under the carpeting gets saturated with coolant, and stays that way, it will cause the metal underneath, as well as the plate on the bottom side of the carpeting (mounts plastic nubs for securing the floor mat) will rust. Coolant can easily get into/under the foam if the top vinyl layer of the foam is cracked. I let the heater core leak in one of my cars go on for way too long, and I now have to address some rust spots on the floor boards.
What a useful video, many thanks for TAKE the time for share this,I had a customer who have a C 70 with 350K on the dash... And i have to replace it,because it's leaking long time ago.. Nice channel keep it up 👍👍 1 subscriber more since now The tips and the info it's well done.. It seems you take your time to produce the video 👏👏👏
I'm very frustrated can you please help every time I put the screws back in the heater core keeps falling off I don't know what screws to put back in can you please help me get through this because I really want to fix this and I can't and I can't drive my car and is very frustrating
I installed a new heater core in my 1994 Volvo 850 and the screw that goes to the pipes is not long enough so the pipes don’t get tightened and the antifreeze leaks on the ground lol. Gotta find a longer screw
I would place a heater or something similar in the car and let it dry. But normally this should not make the vehcile rust. Ofcourse if its let sit there for a long time you may have problems with more then just rust, electrics etc.

Great video. I followed it to the letter on my '98 S70 and it took me less than an hour start to finish. It really is as easy as it looks and it sure is nice not to have that antifreeze smell in car any more. Thanks!
I've just followed your video to replace the heater core in my Volvo C70, it worked a treat! If you come to England I'll buy you a beer! Many thanks!.
Thanks for awesome video and explanation. Did installation this morning, took me 2 hours and everything went as expected.

Top notch step by step, easy to follow, including which torx drivers to use. Highly recommended. Thank you.

Just did this job, super easy with this video! I would recommend a large towel. I used an old bath towel, and the coolant that come out SOAKED it.
Hey man, thank you so much. I may not have tried this repair if I hadn't seen this video. It is a great description from start to finish. Sharing your knowledge and experience with us completely took all the doubt and anxiety out of the deal.
Just tried this, I did NOT crimp my heater hoses enough. Definitely do that. It's definitely a mess lol
Thank you SOOO much! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge so freely and clearly.
Thank you for a quick, informative and easy to see what your doing video. Smaller Vice Grips worked great for clamps. I did manage to get the job done without removing the glove box or knee bolster.
Amazing video, ALMOST paid someone 400 to do it until i saw this video. Youre the best!
I would like to know if the same instructions can be followed for a 2001 Volvo S80 T6? Thanks in advance. Great video, will recommend your channel
thanks... Can you access the A/C evaporator without removing the dash?

Any idea what year they started putting the aluminum heater pipes in?
Wow, thank you very much for uploading this! A daunting task has been de-mystified!
Thank you for the great video! I am going to do it, but don't know what it means to 'heat cycle' the car. I have a 1998 Volvo v70xc. Can you please advise?
Cheers for this, took twenty mins for me to do after watching this link. Thanks man....Andi from the UK

I'm on the tools myself and have already done a couple of these abeit on a rhd model (UK) but have to say a very good video and well edited too.
is the core still bad if not leaking inside?
Awesome video.. I have a 99 crosscountry wagon.. Would it be the same process.
great video, but cant seem to reattacht the two screws start that tighten the heater hose flange to the firewall--cant see down there--screws spin forever! any ideas?
2000 v70xc

I'd like to see a video on a 2001 v70 core replacement. This model looks like a piece of cake!
I saw this video it is informative. I have 92 Volvo (740 Turbo wagon). Need to replace the heater core. Is it similar to this video? Any suggestion how to install it if different from this one. Thanks.
jou can push the shifter cables to the side. And i normally remove them to the driver side, works both ways.
Outstanding tutorial ,thanks for the tips too Ken !
Would love to see a simple "how to" diagnose the ECC system. Have had many more issues with ECC than heater core. But a good video anyway! !
'wow thank you so much! I will be doing this in a hour or so and realized a couple things that I will need to do, great help!!!
wery nice totorial, thanks a lot! :)
but do u know does it will fit to C70 2001 2.4 ?
GREAT video, will do this to my 850 -95 in a week or so!
+Themostpower Symptoms matched extremly well, dissapearing coolant which cant be traced and residue on the windshield which is annoying as hell and hard to get rid!

Is this the same or almost the same for 850 turbos? I have a 1996
Amazing video!!!!! well done thank you so much. You just save my family a lot of money. God bless you and your family.

Size of the o-ring seals?
If Ken reads this, is the 2001 S60 as simple as this? Any insight is welcome.

Use the machine screw not the self tapping screw. Also connect and tighten to the pipes before putting in the other screws.
the video was so helpfull.it made the dreaded less painfull:-)
I installed a new heater core in my 1994 Volvo 850 and the screw that goes to the pipes is not long enough so the pipes don’t get tightened and the antifreeze leaks on the ground lol. Gotta find a longer screw
the inside of my 2000 s70 glt is flooded, will see if this is the problem.

They engineered a solution to the problem OEM heater cores constantly encounter. Cheaper than OEM and out lasts them.
thank bro

Drain the antifreeze.out of car cleaned out before working on.it;
You mean steel pipes. Aluminum is a metal
Thank you! Great video.
