    The fact that Gol D Roger was his dad and Ace's life was a living hell because of it. Edward Newgate was the father he wanted. I get Ace's actions.

      And in the end, blood ended up proving true because he acted just like his bio dad would have, but also... just like his actual dad did. It's such a tragic and painful character moment because once you read the ace, luffy and sabo history, you see that he's always been that way. Then it connects back to Alabasta and being unable to leave until he was sure Luffy was safely away from Smoker and his obstinancy in protecting the Spade pirates when being recruited by Whitebeard... ugh, heart. ;.;

    I believe that choosing Duty over Family has left Garp a broken man. Sengoku knowing Garp's state of mind knew the whole time that Garp could end up turning on them which is why he kept looking at Garp and questioning him during the war. Garp betraying Marine would give * "EMOTIONAL DAMAGE" to all Marines. For Garp is the "Hero of the Marines". It'd cause chaos to those who idolize him as his "HERO". What even is Justice, if Garp saved Ace, A criminal, Big threat, to the World Government?

    "What changed post-timeskip?": I think I'd say the story become less character-driven and became more plot-driven. We basically stopped getting new crewmates post-timeskip, so the focus was less on the characters and more on world-building. Pre-timeskip, each arc was basically driven by solving a problem for someone we got to know and care about over the course of the story. Post-timeskip, each arc is more about filling us in on the politics of the world and how everything connects together. Wholecake was kind of a exception, since we got to learn a lot more about Sanji, and I think it was a stronger arc for that. Post-timeskip, a lot more of the mysteries of the world came into focus.
    I think this is partially why everyone keeps expecting different characters to join the Strawhats, like Carrot and Yamato. We've been trained to think that every character we care about WILL join the Strawhats, because that's how the story worked Pre-timeskip.
    And it's no secret the other Strawhats, other than Luffy, just haven't gotten as much time to shine, Post-timeskip. They're almost background characters in the manga. We really haven't gotten as many heartfelt or emotional moments with them as we did Pre-timeskip. But, that's because they're NOT the focus, the world-building and politics and mysteries are.
    There's also the smaller power issue. Pre-timeskip, the Strawhats were basically the scrappy underdogs, having to try to be clever to get around the problems they came up against. Post-timeskip, they're all a lot stronger and more capable, which makes grunts and smaller enemies a non-issue. Pre-timeskip, there's NO WAY Usopp could handle a dozen grunts, but he can one-shot the group of them now. It changes how the fights work. There's also a bit of inconsistency, since characters like Nami and Usopp feel like they can vary in strength almost from scene to scene.
    There's also the panelling. Over the years Oda has just crammed more and more detail and panels into the page-space. Compare a page from the manga from the beginning to today. Where before, he might have a few pages that only had 3 larger panels on a page, nowadays almost every page is 6 or more panels PACKED with detail. It's impressive...but it can also feel a little claustrophic. It's all just a bit much, and it kind of messes with the flow a bit. And I think it's kind of hurt the appeal of Gear 5 a bit for me. It's a over-the-top cartoony form that FEELS like it should be breaking page-borders and be huge...but it's kind of constrained by the smaller, more numerous panels.
    Each arc has also gotten MUCH longer Post-timeskip. Where before we had a few smaller arcs, Post-timeskip has been made up almost exclusively of longer arcs. Maybe this is part of the world-building and how each arc feeds into one another, but it changes how the pacing works, too. Wano was the biggest offender by far. Wano was long. Maybe too long. But, like Skypeia, I'll bet there's a reason why we spent so long there.

    There will never be a time when EVERYONE who reads/watches any piece of media will all be happy about it. There will be things one group loves while the other hates it.
    As for new members to the crew, almost every arc has had that one or two pseudo members that will be kinda apart of the crew for that time. They won’t always fully join the crew but they’ll basically be an honorary member. While not official, Yamato and Carrot are Straw Hats, much like Vivi is basically apart of the crew
    Each crew member has their reasons for being on the crew. Vivi, for instance, is but has duties elsewhere so she can’t SAIL with the main body. One day, at the end of One Piece, the Straw Hats will have a MASSIVE party involving everyone they’ve made friends with and it will be the biggest event in history.

      I think he had major plot points mainly figured out early, but then as we know about his character design, he would get an idea and weave it into existing characters and his world. I mean look at Lola on Thriller Bark, who knew she was Big Moms daughter when they were partying after Moria fell because at that point we'd barely heard about the Emperor's let alone seen one besides Shanks or shadows of them when mentioned. Oda is one of my favorite world builders in fiction and is up there with George Lucas, Tolkien, and others who created massive fictional worlds.

No author ever has 100% planned from the start because idea's can change or branch out as you write. Having the main narrative planned and building onto it is what has allowed one piece to have such depth because he has never scrapped the main plan and only built on it with tons more depth as the story had gone.

    I understand the tension argument, but I don't have a problem with it.
    Pre time skip, all of the Straw Hats barley got by in a cruel and harsh sea with the determination of their wills. Luffy was pushed to his breaking point with Crocodile and Lucci, Zoro got destroyed by Mihawk and from there every major fight was life and death, and he never got enough time after thriller bark to recover. Sanji walked away from his fight with bonclay talking about how many bones were broken, Enel was untouchable except by sheer luck that luffy eas rubber, etc. All of these build the tension.
    Contrast with post time skip: the crew spent 2 years doing nothing but train--this is much longer than the strawhats have traveled together. The prepared and over prepared for the new world, and it shows. They crushed everything until they were forced to face Yonko, *and they deserved those overwhelming victories.* Most of the tension comes from the collateral damage they may cause. Whats the point of being strong when everyone around you gets hurt?
    Honestly I'm fine with this, and now that we're post Wano, a place where they were all pushed to pre time skip limits, i expected to see a return to classic One Piece tension

      IDK, I feel like the build up to Wano is very much an Enies Lobby moment but on a longer track. The reveals, the history and the connections finally drawn and put to rest really make it a non-stop ride for me. It may be that people need to re-read since week-to-week does make it feel less than, but it has such the same build. Man, Wholecake vs Enies Lobby is mirror.
      I wrote a whole theory thread but they're literally retreading the same story beats through the New World as they did in Paradise. WCI is W7/EL, Wano is Thriller Bark, we're currently at Saobody again, so shit's gonna get realllll.

      To me it's more a matter of how post time skip things have gotten so much more plot driven than anything. I mean this series was always more plot than character driven, but personally I just miss the amount of zany and endearing dynamic interactions the crew used to have in the first half of the series.
      Like Zoro and Nami's specific brand of tongue slashing and contrasting personalities for example is one of my favourite recurring bits of character interplay within the crew and far as I can recall they haven't even had an onscreen argument with one another since Zou.

    How Ace reacted was very human and normal. To think his death or his character was badly written because it was avoidable and/or he was dumb is flawed thinking. He reacted very human. People don't always make good decisions. They often make rash and emotional decisions that end up having major consequences. He (like many characters, especially the pirates) never really had a real family. He had found family. He chose who his father was and respected and loved his chosen father more than anything else in the world aside maybe his chosen brothers Luffy and Sabo. So to have someone disrespect someone he loved, respected, and idolized so much very believably ignited an anger in him that he couldn't control, causing him to make the second biggest, and final, mistake of his life.

    The Wanted posters have been One Piece's version of "power scaling", and I've always thought that it was a good approach. It's not so much objective power levels that matter to the world so much as perceived relative strengths, as those inform the actions of players such as the World Government.
    For example Shirahoshi's power is terrifying and would surpass any other character by far if properly harnessed, but since it remains secret it doesn't "break the setting".

  • @killuel6578
    @killuel6578 ปีที่แล้ว

    The strength of a story is in its hability to connect emotionally with the audience, and one way authors manage to do that is by relying on a good narrative structure. Japanese stories famously follow the Kishoutenketsu 起承転結 formula which consistes in 起 (introduction) 承 (development) 転 (turn) 結 (conclusion) and that's consistent from the smallest scale (a single chapter to sometimes a single page) to the bigger ones (a hole arc to the hole story).
    That is all to say that if One Piece was not able to administer the tension on a weekly basis producing a satisfying chapter each time, it would have been quickly cancelled (specially because Shonen Jump takes in high regard the weekly surveys readers do answering what series they liked most each time)

      Arlong Arc: Luffy stuck at the bottom of the pool, Gen-san keeps his head above water so he doesn't drown
      Loguetown: A random lightning saves Luffy's life
      Alabasta: Robin saves him from death after his first fight with Croc, the blop of water falls on him after he got sucked dry by Croc during second fight.
      Saboady: They were fucked, then Kuma came and saved them
      Impel Down: Luffy got rotflstomped by Magellan, luckily Iva's right-hand person came and saved him.

    Big mom was leagues ahead of Kaido as both a villain and a character. Her presence in wano caused him to be overshadowed in the arc he was supposed to be the big bad in. He felt like a wall in luffys way and she was a actual well developed villain because of the whole cake arc. None of the beast pirates except queen had any depth at all. jack had zou and that was it. King fought zoro and that was all. The flying six showed up at onigashima had a random battle and lost and that was it. only page one and Drake were seen before the raid. And Hawkins. But at least with the flying six you have the they are minions excuse. Doffys guys didnt get a lot of spotlight in Dressrosa. But when its kaido that excuse dont fly. Doffys group felt more menacing overall aside from King and queen were just made to be stronger because of powers. But i really think that big mom being in wano took away from Kaido. The depth that doffy and Big mom had in back to back arcs just wasnt there with him. Big mom and orochi both overshadowed him. Orochi for being a piece of garbage. And big mom a all around better villain and character. And from like the mid way of wano the arc started feeling like the plot got lost somewhere along the way. I think oda tried so hard to make the arc epic that it ended up actually hurting the overall flow of it in the long run while its not bad. It wasnt as good as Dressrosa and whole cake overall because Kaido was a disappointment as was he and kings weak one or two page flashback. it felt overly rushed and empty compared to Doffy and big mom in comparison.

    I see that most of the complaint about One Piece moving too fast usually always being pinpoint at the end of Wano. Which I'm not denying. But Egghead so far is very much moderately pace. And yet people are still lingering on the complaints but cannot find any reason nor example that can be shown through Egghead. Just because Oda make one small hiccups, they already exaggerated it, assumed and concluded that the whole series will be like this moving forward. They use that one hiccup to justify their hate over post timeskip One Piece.
    It's Dressrossa all over again but with opposite reasonings. People complaint that Dressrossa was too long and too slow, then use it to justify how post-timeskip has dropped in quality and is worse than pre-timeskip. Than they use the exact same complaint but completely opposite reasoning with Wano. In Wano's case, they argued that Oda just want to be done with One PIece and is rushing the story to the end. In Dressrossa's case, they argued Oda is milking and just want to drag things out. The arguments are so inconsistent. Especially considering pre-timeskip One Piece have inconsistent pacing with some island we spend a very short time while others we spend significantly longer time. But somehow pre-timeskip is perfect stories that can almost do no wrong.

Roger must have discovered the same fruit on Laugh Tale, the island of joy, and that’s why he and his crew laughed so hard. The fruit was the source of their laughter, and Luffy inherited it. That also explains the X mark on his chest, which is a symbol of the fruit.
