We've had several British icons in the Classics World garage, but there's been a distinct lack of Landy. We decided to sort that by purchasing a very late Series 2A Safari Station Wagon! When CEO Steve fancied reliving childhood memories of riding in a Land Rover, we sought out this remarkably tidy 1971 Series 2A as the next project car for Classics Monthly Magazine. The later Series 2A models featured flush-fitting headlights and slight differences to the controls, mildly updating the aging Landy to compete with the likes of Jeep and the Toyota Land Cruiser.

I remember a teacher owning one back in the 1970's it looked agricultural then, I couldn't imagine what it would be like today, good luck with the project.
Looks like a good example. Given this is a channel re classic vehicles, I don't understand why people bother to be negative in comments below - but that's social media for you! I would note that, a few years back, that Lancaster Insurance were not interested in insuring my 12 seater Series 3! Due to number of seats! So maybe not a great fit with your sponsor!
Reminds me of a 'posh' Scout Troop Minibus Circa 1980's! Sadly my Troup couldn't afford such luxury! but we did see them run by other scout groups who had more members! We made do with whatever the scout master and parents had!
That Great British spirit of optimism: Points at puddle of water in old Land Rover and declares, "Hopefully that's not a leaky top".... Ha!
Fun project, actually the basis of a very desirable vehicle being a full StaWag. It's easy to tire of other common British classics, but a Land Rover is so useful and such an experience every time out, you'll somehow struggle to part with it.. and you can arrive absolutely anywhere in a Land Rover.

interesting choice of a classic vehicle, but why not be different? All the best with this project.
That’s ready to roll. Don’t need anything doing to it. If it’s basically original you’ll not impress or improve by fitting loads of britpart and exmoor trim bits, the fifty years old stuff is way better made, exmoor do good canvas but the seats aren’t comfortable and they tear up something rotten Showroom condition on a Landy is where you start, not where you aim to end up.

Honestly if that were mine I'd fit a set of the correct size tyres, find and fit the correct grille, get it serviced and enjoy it, looks like a great example!

Interesting he says there is no synchro on 1st and 2nd, as very late IIA station wagons supposedly had full synchro gearboxes.

Looks good don't mess with it when it's cold you will know put 12 people in there and it will struggle to do 40mph and wait until you hit a hill be quicker to go on a bike ,saying that I got 3 series out back steve was correct when he said what's coming down the line it will out shine all ecu vehicles, but the get into your blood and hard get rid of.Aidan in Ireland.

Have a couple of these on farms near me here in Au with trees growing thru them. There's reasons for that.
Land Rovers look all wrong when they're clean and shiny. This one, with its faded paint, dented panels and rusty wheels looks absolutely perfect. Beautiful old thing.
Wheel/tire combo look small, perhaps they're SWB rims. Take it for a spin behind a car with an accurate speedo to see if it over reads. I'd do very little cosmetically, mechanically unless you want to keep originality. A good 200tdi engine and box swap will make it more daily driver friendly along with parabolic springs. I will be watching this with interest.
Yes it should be on 7.50x16 tyres.
No!! Don't put a horrible Tdi in it. It would ruin a beautiful classic.
Do you remember your first ride in a wheel barrow? There’ll be one or two other times when you’ve had as much fun in a vehicle, but driving a series Landy will be one of the best if you have red blood in your veins.

No, 1971 it's a late IIA. This have little motifications to the "old" IIA and a Pastic grill.
Go to the Vinyl shop and put some zebra stripes on it. That should get it noticed.
Tidy example of a true icon! Keen to follow the progress! Those fuel cap padlocks are a common feature on Series Landys before lockable fuelcaps came along. The 3 piece 2nd row seating on the other hand, never seen that before.. My '82 Series 3 5door SW has the 2nd row bench seat but i'm interested in what other 2nd row seating setups are out there if you have any info on that? Cheers and great video!
3 part middle seats is normal on UK market series station wagons.
@@onetonlandrover Mine is an Australian spec Series 3 Stage 1 so that would explain the difference, cheers!

My 1982 109 has a bench seat in the second row. It was exported as a LHD and then converted to RHD and brought back to the UK.
I've just purchased a 1984 series 3 109" full canvas tilt ex mod 2.25 petrol 3/4 ton truck/utility and have three front seats and installed 6 troop side seats with lap belts in the rear SQI report and registered on the log book, great modification as it's now a multipurpose vehicle, I can remove the rear seating for use as a van. Classic/Vintage tax and insurance.
Has the exhaust been replaced, in 51 years???

Project? That’s not a project…just drive it, do the odd spot of maintenance and jobs a good’un. Oh and if you fit an overdrive it will turn it into a daily driver.

Whilst I can see that the bulk head is a series 2A the front is modified to look like a series 3, a series 2A should have the headlights in the recess between the wings.
The lights moved to the wings in '69, to keep America happy apparently! Yes not sure about the s3 grill.

Have a word with any former British armed servicemen about their views on the Land Rover, although be ready for lots of swearing and brace yourself for their negative views.
Poor you! Land Rovers are supposed to be bloody horrendous things to drive, literally agricultural. They have their use, purpose and home but the modern road isn't it. Off road yes, on road then you'll struggle to find a worse vehicle. They are also horrendous for towing trailers unless you like the idea of spinal reconstruction!
🤔They should have kept the Bentley Turbo. Even that would have been more practical for regular driving on the road, than than this vehicle 😳.
Yes I have driven some of these old Land Rovers and they are not the best to drive to put it mildly. I remember the whole gear stick coming off in my hand on one of these, had to use a monkey wrench on what was left of the base of the gear stick to change gear and get me home. It would be quite interesting if they used it as a project car to make it more a civilised drive so replacing drums with discs, replacing the engine with newer more powerful, however they will not do that as it will lose its originality and not sure if it will be worth the cost
Ah, the Land Rover. Noisy, slow, agricultural, roasting in the summer, freezing in the winter, suffocatingly smelly, uncomfortable, ponderous, unresponsive, rattly, thirsty and unreliable. I suppose they look pretty cool though. If I never have to use one again I shall be overjoyed.
