  • I spent the morning with Nene Overland; home to very possibly the largest selection of Land Rover Defenders in Europe.
The Range Rover in question is from Nene Overland's custom house; Rivolve.

I love Land Rovers Defenders. I crashed one in Germany when I was in the military. I backed it into a parked 4 ton Bedford truck parked on a tank run test road whilst on guard duty. I thought I was going to jail for life, but on colonels orders I was marched in and when asked to explain myself I was nervous…and said well Sir the Bedford was painted camouflaged I never saw it. He looked up over his glasses and laughed, he followed up by saying I wonder if they can take a 110 defender and shorten it to a 90 series 😂😂😂 I lost a weeks pay and was restricted to barracks for a month 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ was a fair deal considering the damage I did to it. Enjoy the trip, I drove these land rovers in the Deserts, Canada, America, Germany, Bosnia and Northern Ireland. They will always have a special place in my heart 👍👍👍

They are nasty. Utterly useless in any military scenario other than basic base duties. There’s a VERY good reason why every terrorist group insists that the CIA supply them with Toyotas - they work. Having served in Southern Africa when the local terrs (also involved in a Rockefeller/CIA proxy war) were in the habit of planting Russian land mines on roads and tracks. In such situations I would rather be on foot or a decent bike. Too many lads lost legs and more driving those useless Land Rovers in the bush.
And this is before we address their total inability to stop even a stray 7.62 short round with their aluminium panels. Ludicrous.
But it’s easy to see why these Starbucks addicted hipsters have got into them. They fulfil their need to pose in the latest trendy ‘retro’ toys - whilst everyone who has ever been off-road knows that a Land Cruiser is vastly superior.
The only thing worse than a Land Rover is a VW Beetle or an upturned French pram!
      Peace

Freddie, the green vehicle you thought might have been a 1950s Toyota, is actually a 1950s Willys-Overland, kind of the original SUV. So you got the decade right! Willys was a company that made many of the jeeps for the U.S. armed forces during WW2, so it has that jeep heritage. Willy also made a convertible version, the Jeepster, which has the same jeep-style front end as the Overland.
I hope this helps. Keep up the excellent work. Liked and subscribed. 👍

Iconic British vehicle , like an E-type or a Bonny! I grew up in the countryside with them trundling down the lanes
and over the fields and its the only vehicle from my childhood that still looks modern and fresh today! Amazing.
I can remember my dad navigating the narrow lanes, trying to avoid crashing into them being 'enthusiastically' driven by
the offspring of the local landed gentry ...it was a terrifying trip to school most mornings!!
Mind you ... As I found out years later the ones from the 60's were horrible to drive any distance !

    • @duncanjowett5575

Yup. A staple of rural British life.
But, as an ex Landy owner and someone who lives in a farming community in Yorkshire...I know of 3 Landys locally. A Defender & 2 Series (one a show diva and one I assume is a non-running project)
All the farmers these days drive pick-ups. And their wives drive those "Range Rovers" that Posh Spice designed. They take the kids 200 yards to the village school in them.
Land Rover got left behind & vastly over priced.

To see that 4x4 really made me smile, amazing memories.
One of my uncles in the 60s had one like the 4x4 next to the Land Rover ? Camel Trophy, it was popular in Argentina in the 60s and 70s. We called it " Estanciera ". from Ika .
I am sure there are a lot of them still driven in Argentina.

Lying in the back of the vehicle with the roof rolled back admiring the scenery in the sunshine listening to the cricket on Radio 3. This was before seatbelts where mandatory! Later that holiday a rear half shaft broke and our driver replaced it himself! I can understand and enjoy your excitement. Rather more expensive than the Fiat to run though. A new bike and Land Rover at the same time, will be a hard pull between which to drive, thanks for the insight to Nene Overland, never seen inside their place before, it certainly is a cool place. Have a happy two weeks, had the pleasure to drive a new 2007 Air Con Defender hand top back in the day with wait for it, electric windows! Those small little comfort made all the difference. It will be interesting to see how noisy a soft top is, I wonder do they add any extra soundproofing in the upgrade? Hope you and Monika have a great time driving around. My memory was of how many people would stop, smile and chat when they saw a Defender, and that in Ireland where they are not as big as the UK.

    • @FreddieDobbs

I think it’s genuinely neck and neck with which draws more attention (Dax vs Defender). Switching from one to the other feels like a dream because they’re such polar opposites.

@@FreddieDobbs because the internet is so accessible by phone, I was swapping my car's and bikes 3 times a year like an addiction. I've started looking on Rightmove at property which is great because swapping house's isn't so easy. Plus you definitely need to run that past the Mrs 😂. Always thought those little Dax monkey bike things are cool! Bet you could easily fit a tuned up monkey bike engine in one 👍

Really enjoyable vlog Freddie even though I have no passion at all for Defenders but they do look butch and your enthusiasm was as welcomed as ever, love it, closest I've owned to one of those was a Range Rover Evoque for 4 years which was very good, out of interest I now drive a Cupra Formentor VZ2 310 bhp and it ticks all the boxes.
Enjoy your 2 weeks in Cornwall with the Defender both, we spent a week there pre covid only in the summer visiting the many touristy fishing villages.

The 2.4 diesel was one of the best engines to go in a Defender - probably because Land Rover had nothing to do with it. The vehicle you've been loaned is luxury compared to the Series Land Rovers it evolved from. The big storage box between driver and passenger is a legacy of the third seat that used to occupy the space. I always liked the three-seat layout, particularly when changing into second or fourth gear if there was an attractive woman sitting next to me (too much information probably). You mentioned celebrities sniffing around Nene. I always used to fill my Sprinter up at North Oxford Services because I could stare at the bikes at BMW Motorrad across the forecourt. One day David Beckham pulled up in a navy blue LWB station wagon. He was in his full "Duke of Norfolk" outfit and was very "look at me, look at me". I obviously ignored him, but must admit I liked his Land Rover. I've only got one tip for your Cornwall trip - never try to turn that thing around in a country lane, you'll be going forwards and backwards till Xmas.

One the worst storms in years and I spent an entire night shift towing people out of ditches and rescuing people from floods. They are fearless machines! I assume by now you have discovered the appalling turning circle? Part of its charm.
