I found this exact same Snapper put out on the street a couple of weeks ago. It started right up but smoked like a mosquito fogger. The oil level was way high. Drained it, and it measured out to be twice the amount needed. Put in new oil at the correct level, cleaned up the mess in the airbox and sold it for some easy cash. Simply amazes me how people don't follow the most basic of maintenance or diagnosis!

First, I usually leave gas in the tank over the winter. Up to now, I've never had any problems.
The last few years since I've been watching videos like yours, I have been taking better care of keeping my equipment up to date on upkeep. Simply cleaning the wheels then oiling them does make a noticeable difference.
I've also been having a lot of fun taking old equipment that's been discarded and getting them running again!

My wife is always asking me "how many things you going to change the oil in" . I maintain my stuff pretty good. Each time someone makes fun of me for it I remind them I'm the one that still has 30 year old equipment in great condition. Its worth it to keep up with it if you can afford it. I understand some folks can't and they do what they got to do.

Good overall mower use / maintenance video. My dog will change the oil by now. He has a slight problem torquing the sharpened blade I gave him. OOOPPPS.
Another thing I always recommend for long engine life is keeping the fins around the engine free of dirt and grass clippings. All air cooled engines are dependent on airflow. Pull the top off and use compressed air to get rid of the grass and mouse nests that build up. Great video as usual

I have the industrial snapper with the electric start I bought a used. It didn't have the Key to it but I have the wires that I can make it start like that and it's the best mower I've Bought. The rear tires are losing the meat on them. And starts every time. A paid 50 bucks. thank you for the video.

I often wonder how many read the owner's manual before using these for the first time? I could hear Mr. Con Rod telling us he'll be leaving soon!! Mid next week, I'll be servicing my mower before using it. Oil change, check the spark plug, check & clean air filter, etc.

@@Only-Memories-In-The-End Being raised by a mechanic does not mean you know more than I do. The way you're bragging tells me you're an idiot. Not reading owner's manuals states this. Not all 4 stroke mower engines use the same oil. Service intervals vary from one engine to another. I used to work in the mechanical engineering industry, mostly automotive. I've worked on cars that require special tools, & this is no different to some mowers, or line trimmers. Now go away, & be an idiot elsewhere.

i have a snapper self propelled i got off the side of the road and this summer will be the third I've used it, I love the little mower and I've never done anything besides sharpen the blade, I think I'm gonna do a oil change before this season. the little thing always runs great and has never let me down, the least I could do is change the oil.

I own that mower, and it's not a snapper, it's made by MTD. That said, it's an ok mower but an actual snapper is much better. For the question, yes I have neglected maintenance in the past, while I am much better now, I'm not always up to date on the maintenance schedule, especially oil changes, but I do replace the air filter once a month. I buy them in bulk so they are about $1 each.

I have almost the same mower. It's a 2012 Snapper SP70. Bought it new in 2013. It has the 675ex briggs. Other than the deck rusting out underneath which is partly my fault due to not cleaning it often enough, it's been the best mower I've ever had. Starts on the first pull almost every time.
The way the air cleaner base looked i bet it was ran without a filter for years and it wont last a lot longer, I just got a free troy bilt because it was smoking and when I checked the oil it was a few inches above the fill mark and the air filter was oil soaked . My guess is thats what happened on that one and they removed the air filter and never replaced it. I would of did a compress test when you had the top cover off with a drill to bypass the compression release. Great video as usual
not sure but it was definitely done for a long time.
What I do when I change the oil on my mower I first make sure the oil level is fine , then I put the old oil in a measuring kitchen cup. My mower measure around one cup of oil or so, get a new measuring cup ( at the dollar store they cost $1.25), measure the same amount as the old oil and put the new oil in the mower without the trouble of checking your oil dip stick but me been the perfectionist that I am I always check it anyway.

All the dirt going in the engine probably caused blowby, and since there was oil coming from the crank case vent into the carburetor, dirt probably stuck to the oil that built up from the vented oil

It looked like it was run without an air filter. The two round inserts should be clean just from removing the filter. I service small engines on the side, and I'm amazed at the number of machines that come in without the air cleaner, esp. string trimmers and blowers.
Wow. Only 3-6 years? I just changed the fuel line on our Honda and there was a 2010 date code printed on the line. And we mow year round, once a week.

My current push mower, a Toro Recycler with a Briggs flathead, had what I thought was a rod knock when new. I took it back to the dealer, who claimed it wasn't knocking. A few yrs later, the governor spring broke. I think it had been installed incorrectly. When I put on the new spring, the RPMs increased, and I could no longer hear the knock. I think the engine speed had been too low the whole time. You mentioned that the engine speed is low, so maybe if you adjusted it, the knock might get better. Of course, this video is a few months old, so I fully expect that this mower is no longer in your possession.
I have skipped an oil change every now & then, but I never let it go more than 2 yrs.
unfortunately if the "knocking" noise presents at any speed, low or high it's still indicates excessive wear on the connecting rod

If you run across a Weedeater FB 25 blower that needs to have the spring rewound, will you make a video on how to do that? I do not think they are made anymore, so you would likely see them on the side of the road. My ran really well and I did turn the rpm's up a little. Have good days!

I had the same model of engine on my husqvarna and it ended knocking just like this one. It had a slow oil leak around the base gaskets. And the time realized, it was too late
that's a real shame.

it varies as to the application, but I use, WD-40, Lithium grease and sometimes if needed I'll use heavy duty grease.
You can hear the piston slap on that one!

Mower is in good shape, but The rod definitely needs to be replaced. Show a disassembly video and show us how bad the rod is. Would like to see it installed and run again
this mower is not mine, but I'm working on one right now, that I'd doing that very exact job. So yes I will just on a different mower.

I'd like to think of my maintenance, such as it is as continuous since I'm prone to get laid up with no warning (Army). The last time was for all winter and a while the previous fall BUT everything still started right up, except for the electric start for the Missus. That will be forthcoming! And EVERYTHING is a tradeoff. Whether you deal with gas and oil and oil changes and oiling OR charging a battery and taking it indoors to extend the life expectancy in winter and oiling oil points, there is ALWAYS a tradeoff. Whether to swap non-fumes for a nice MMMMMM, there's still stuff to do and a battery job will cost you a LOT as a gasoline mower will start out cheaper but has the add-ons as gas and oil. ALWAYS a tradeoff. On EVERYTHING! Salesmen/dealers would like you to believe there isn't but there will be somewhere. BLESSINGS!

@@HomeGaragechannel You're welcome but I'm a Nam vet and that whole thing was a BAD joke and was totally worthless except the Higher up people that made all the BIG bucks supplying and making stuff for it. WAY too many folks killed and maimed and at the least, made lab rats BUT I did learn to run a crane there and made a living running draglines and all kinds of diesel stuff after I got out. THANKS for doing a wonderful job!
What type of socket do you need to get to start it with a drill?
any six point will work, 3/8 or 1/2 drive works, just needs to be the right size for the flywheel bolt. they're not all the same size some are smaller but this one is very large

I love the lack of maintenance that is necessary on my lawn boy's, but I feel conflicted because I don't get to spend time understanding the wear on the engine by looking at the oil. People neglect to change the oil despite the fact it is an amazing opportunity to understand engines thar power the world around you

That's actually important. When draining, opportunity to survey the drive belt (self propel), get the dried grass out from under the deck. Check blade edges. Same for autos, CV boots, leaks anywhere. You get the Bad News Early, & when you catch things early, you get no surprises later, or the big bills. A shame most don't drain their own oil, solves so many issues. Some people never learn. But they do pay. Over & over.
That oil looked really nasty. I wonder if the next oil change has the forbidden glitter in it.

I have a lawnmower that has been sitting for 5-7 years with oil in it. I am looking to get it working again and I I’m not sure where to start. It’s in good condition and from what i remember it started/worked when last used.
If the fuel tank is empty, add a couple of ounces of gasoline in the tank, and try starting it.
Try putting some fuel, in the carbs throat, and then try starting it again.

I do leave gas in mine but I give it a heavy dose of stabilizer and sea foam the I let it run for 10 minutes then I put it away

6 years is a good life for a lawn mower? I guess with today's crap that's on the market it may be good but I've got a Toro Whirlwind from 1974 with a 3 HP B&S that still sees several hours per year as a back up mower for the rougher areas of my yard.

I have an EGO and I'm long overdue (3 seasons) to sharpen my blades and lube my wheels. Not sure what other maintenance you do to battery mowers.
mower wise that's it besides cleaning any stuck grass, under the deck. The real maintenance is keeping the battery healthy thru the winter.
What do you recommend for that? I try to keep them fully charged but not leave them on the charger so its not trickling.

between my car and my lawn mower I have the hardest time reading oil dipsticks. I clean the stick once and then pull it out again I can never really tell where the oil starts and ends 😞
I know it's hard, I would always suggest putting a measured amount in, according to the manual. After that use the mower for 10 minutes, let it stand, for about 5 minutes and then the oil will be much easier to read.

Check the oil after it sits overnight. This assures the fill tube doesn't have any oil on the sides caused by moving it around or actual use. AN oil change should be done after the mower is used and up to temperature. then I measure the new oil using an old Briggs and Stratton oil bottle that came with my machine. It holds exactly the amount of oil the engine holds. Then I check it before next use before rolling it outside or starting it.
I'm guessing when you say "something more personal", you mean wood?...I save broken rake/broom handles to make old fashioned pull cord handles. You can sand the paint off and stain or oil. It increases the value of the mower by at least a doll hair.

from another engine, like a connecting rod.

no, I think it's the linkage system on it.
@@HomeGaragechannel I will try to adjust the govener linkage and there is a gold screw in the middle of the carb I think it controls fuel flow

nope not at all as i look after my stuff yearly and i do keep up with the maintenance and it starts very well after doing the simple basics whether it,s a 2 stroke aka 2 cycle or even a 4 stroke aka 4 cycle engine and i,d rather do it than creating a costly job in the long run etc.

that was brutal that poor mower haven't seen oil that sparkly in years let alone the amount of dirt that has gone through the engine i would say the oil level was fine until the dirt entering the engine caused enough bore/ring wear that it started to burn i would have checked the valve lash must be bad from the dirt acting like sandpaper on the valves and seats also if an engine just has a slight knock like that one 15w-50 oil will quieten it down a fair bit
yes the engine is on it's way out, it's a real shame, but then again it's been thru a lot in the last 8 years.

I find the OHV engines to be sensitive to no oil changes where the older engines are less. And by design ,yes the OHV are much better at fuel consumption
most people either dont know or just neglect the maintenance since they dont give a damn about it.

personally I use an old and battered Honda I bought online from somebody next town over.
I really didn't know much about them 10 years ago, but after some time, I realized it was on
its last leg. well that was 10 years ago, and it's still going strong!
What mower do you use?
I bought this same Snapper mower from my local Walmart. This version is NOT the same as the original Hi-Vac with the aluminum frame - not even close. What I found interesting was the engine manual instructing the new owner that oil changes were not necessary. All one had to do was to make sure oil was maintained at the proper level and you would be good to go. I find this advice highly questionable and downright irresponsible on the part of the engineers at B & S. I, of course, ignored this amazing advice and usually change the oil using full synthetic every 15-20 hours, along with the air filter. I would love to know how many new owners of this engine actually took this advice and didn't change their oil, and how long before the engine nuked because of lack of maintenance. I'm also not wild about the plastic carb and the engine cover/starter. The recoil starter has a plastic tab under the spool where one end of the spring rests. It is easily broken, and if this tab, the pawl or dogs break (all are plastic), the parts are not available separately. You must replace the entire blower housing because a $3 part is not available for the recoil starter. Earlier engines have rebuild kits available that include the spring, pawl, dogs, and replacement rope, and remain available to this day. B & S used to be known for the longevity of their small engines, and I would love to know why the drop in quality.
yes it is quite unfortunate, and I have met several of those that have fallen for the advertisements
I hate these engines, whenever I saw one even a little low on oil or with a dirty air filter, they all knocked or had excessive blowby. They just self destruct so easily.

@@HomeGaragechannel seen plenty of old quantums and old sprint/classics low on oil that never fail at the frequency of these newer engines. Many of them were off the dipstick but still ran fine once topped up.
the older machines were made a lot more durable from what I can tell.
