In the future the only gas mowers will be have 3D printed decks made at home powered by Briggs and Stratton flat head engines donated by the owner's grandfather.

I've always enjoyed mowing since I was little. Even when I was 2 I remember trying to help my dad in the yard. Along the way I've gained skills and taught myself a ton about small engines, fixing them, and even built my own go kart. Currently a jr in high school and one might say I've got some rare skills these days for a gen z kid!

I've been resurrecting and reselling lawn mowers for about 5 years now on the side, and I can tell you within that time only one person that I sold one to actually asked me questions pertaining to the maintenance and upkeep of the mower. Most times, people will show up at the appointed meeting time-- cash in hand-- and just ready to take said mower away with them. Typically, they do want to make sure they start before leaving with it, but other than that that's all they're really interested in. I've made attempts numerous times to educate them on what type of oil to use, the brand of air filter, and so on~ but usually I can tell the lack of interest on their part so I've just basically stopped this practice-- sad but no sense in wasting both of our times if there is no interest on their end. Oh well, at the end of the day I get my asking price, so that's all that really matters I suppose.

FIRST rule of owning anything: READ THE MANUAL. Unless you already know everything there is no know about a particular device, NOT a particular TYPE of device (Snapper model xyz123 vs generic class of 21" rotary mower), READ THE MANUAL. If your parents did not tell you that, they were idiots. Why you ask? Because "common sense" means nothing because it is composed of knowledge you acquired, not born with.

You can holler "It's Made in China" all you want but what happened to American made? Snappers? I thought they were a premium brand. They shake and rattle just like another American made General Motors automobile. The real American made has "prioritized money" above all else. As manufacturers we (the United States) have lost our pride. We have to have it "Made in China" cuz we won't allow the Mexicans to come over and give us a hand. Enough industry will also envelope Mexico and then no one will want to come over and then dependence on China will be pretty inevitable.

Pump gas even ethonal for a standard 4 cycle engine will last much longer than 3 months. A well known small engine mechanic on TH-cam showed gas over a year old in numerous engines still started, (OTOH two cycle mixed gas has a much shorter shelf life). The primary issue is evaporation, which can happen very quickly in the bowl of the carburator due to the small volume (even though the engines started, all but a motor using non-ethonal gas showed a gummy residue that is a known result of 10% ethonal gas after evaporation) Best practice is to install a shut off valve if not present and then run the carburetor out of gas prior to storage. If you have a vented gas cap, screwing the cap over a plastic bag will minimize evaporation in the tank during storage, or just remove the gas from the tank. Since most 2 cycle engines don't have a carburetor bowl it's not usually an issue as long as you run the carburetor out of gas but you should definitely remove the gas from the tank as most 2 cycle engines have small and vented gas tanks which can cause the mixed gas to evaporate and quickly go bad. I have actually been shocked how long mixed gas in a sealed container lasts (literally over a year but I used synthetic oil and a stabilizer), the more volume the better. OTOH the oil is a completely different matter.

I've been a Honda mower fanatic for 30 + years (not kidding it is almost a religion).
A friend needed a "working" lawn mower he dropped off 2 older domestic brand units, both in dire need of care. He really preferred to have the self propelled back and told me to keep the unpropelled for my troubles.
After completion of the repairs for the mower of preference was returned to him, I set about making the remaining one functional. It was pinkish / orange from sun fade none of the factory labels remained. The Tecumseh engine was tired and beat up, but would start by the second pull every time! This became my loaner to any friends that needed a temporary mower. For more than 20 years that loyal steed protected my precious Hondas from the destructive nature of people who borrow tools. I truly lament the day I pushed it to the curb with a free sign attached to it. I will never find another piece of equipment like it again, it sat outside 365 days a year, tuned it up every other year. Always started by the second pull...😢
As a side note, the original owner didn't want it back because it did such a poor job of mowing.
When I checked the blade it was sharp as a new one, only one problem . The sharp side was covered in grass clippings, and the blunt side was smooth as could be. Someone had installed the blade upsidedown.😂

The lawn that I mow is approximately 2500 to 3000 sq. meters and me and my father and I also mow the lawn fore some relatives and that lawn is about the same size.. these are recreational properties so it can be a week or two between each mowing, so due to both size of the properties and the length of the grass, a reel-mower does not sound appealing AT ALL to me 🤣🤣 I think I will try to keep taking good care of our gas powered Husqvarna Lawn tractor and rider..
Giving a gas mower some care and attention should no be above most peoples abilities (I hope).. In the las few years I have done work on our ride-on mowers and other power equipment, that I never thought I would dare to or be able to do.. A lot of it has been a lot less difficult than I imagined.. So learning to take at least basic care of a mower should not be beyond the means of most people..

It certainly isn't built like even the 95 conventional deck Snapper I have. Other than the different normal style deck the drive system is just like my original Snapper pro red deck Snapper that finally refused to run anymore. The parts are still easy to find and cheap.
I finally got a electric cordless mower with a couple of big batteries for it because the yard at my house I bought is much smaller than my old long term rental so I don't really need to run the Snapper unless the yard is really overgrown. It needs a new belt and the idler wheel replaced so not high on my list now.

One guy brought his line trimmer to me to get fixed. I've not seen as dirty mower as this one. Last mower I worked on was my own. Tomorrow, I'll be getting my mower out, cleaning the dust off it, putting fuel in it, starting it, run it for a few minutes, then change the oil. Years ago, our local dump wasn't run by anyone. My brother & myself rescued lots of mowers from there. Most of them only needed a new spark plug. We fitted new plugs to them, new blades, changed the oil if they were 4 stroke jobs, cleaned them up, lubed the throttle cables, tested them & sold them. One we had sheared the key on the crank for the flywheel. Put a new key, same thing again. Put a heavier blade disc on, trouble fixed. I was amazed with the number of mowers people chucked away because they didn't do minor servicing, such as changing what was then a $2 part!! One mower was less than 6 months old.

Seen one mower with the whole deck fractured. Pulled as many useful parts off it as possible and scrapped the metal.
