For everyone saying that I mistook her staff for a wand:
I was using Staff and Wand interchangeably. The Japanese word used is "杖" (pronounced "tsue"). The translation for tsue is: cane; walking stick; staff; wand. So I was using them both since it can mean both in Japanese, and I wasn't thinking about it as just one thing. Especially considering that imo a staff can never be a wand, but a wand can be a staff. And the show is not limited to staffs, as I would consider Wirbel's wand to be a wand.
But either way, staff is a more appropriate word for it, so you are not wrong. So I'm sorry I wasn't perfect for your standards 🙃

@@MrAaronOXX sure. The story is good, but it’s not an all time great. In fact, I probably should have taken more points off. Because it’s not the focus of the series. The character development we have seen is good, but it’s too early to call it a 10 and I don’t think it’ll be a 10 anyway. I have it a 9 because I believe the series will follow through well, but right now it’s more like a 7. I mean just compare it to AoT, FMA, Ashita no Joe, or any other classic and it’s really just not comparable. As for voice acting, it’s good, but it’s not what carries the show and none of the VAs really standout for this performance compared to other anime. Idk what I gave it originally cause I’m on mobile and can’t see my old comment, but I’d give it an 8.

@@meee_5155 I love this show so much I want to give it a 10 in every category too, but I agree with your reasoning. Story is focused around character development like you said, however I kinda disagree that the character development is a 7 right now. Imo it's just really really subtle. I've probably just noticed it from watching so many reaction videos. Maybe the character development is slow because time passes so fast for Frieren. I completely agree with an 8 for voice acting. It's good but it's not blowing anyones mind. The only 10 I'd give for VA is Himmel, I think his VA in the first episode is what makes it so emotional tbh. He sounds so kind, warm, and forgiving, which the VA does by itself. On paper many 'perfect heroes' who help everyone might seem like they have ulterior motives since it sounds impossible to be that perfect. I think the soft VA is what makes it immediately believable that he's truly that kind and benevolent without a doubt. So basically the only thing I disagree with is character development being a 7 right now and a 9 in potential. I might even give story a 9 because of how easy it is to find answers to your questions by yourself. For example, why does Ubel's magic go through defenses unlike others? Even if her imagination is crazy, other overconfident mages should be able to do what she does. Rewatching it though, it's her spell that allows her to use that crazy ability. She says that it's her spell specifically that can cut through anything she thinks it can, not any spell.

I may be reaching here but, it could also be a call-back to one of the first episodes. The one where Frieren gets Fern the hair accessory for her birthday and Fern said how she appreciated how Frieren Tries to get to know her which made her happy. Cut to this episode where Stark reminds Fern that Frieren is still trying her best to understand her like before and it was proved true when she saw her repaired staff waiting on the bed for her. I think that call-back also reaffirmed how great a master Frieren truly is even if they don't see eye to eye every time. Again, maybe I'm just overthinking it but I love how this show allows for this kind of thing with so many subtleties going on in the background of an already well-thought-out story.

The show had always shown Fern to be way too mature for her age in early episodes of the show, so having her to show these moments make her character a bit more realistic, im pretty sure the Author did this intentionally to balance out Fern’s personality

One of my favorite parts about the arc was its focus on some of the side characters. Specifically Denken, Laufen, and Richter. Their interactions have been my favorite amongst the side characters. Denken basically treats Laufen like his own granddaughter and was imparting advice to the more cynical Richter like his own son. After the first exam, they could've just went their separate ways completely, but Denken and Laufen convince Richter to join them for dinner. They formed a small bond after that exam in a way that didn't feel too forced or out of place. They weren't best of buds. Inviting someone to go out to eat after all that work is just a nice gesture that can improve friendships.

It's not that Frieren doesn't understand the emotion, but being an elf she has a very different relationship with items. Elven lifespans are stupidly long, no matter how much something might mean to you, no matter how important it is, it's going to break, it's going to essentially turn to dust no matter how well looked after it is. Everything is fleeting so something precious just breaking and moving on is something they get used to.

2:25 This statement was established false in the previous episodes, when Fern explained that the reason she is traveling is to see Friren smile. It would be pretty weird if she would have went from that to I hate Friren, the reason she didn’t respond is most likely just because of her personality to which I can relate as I’m also one of those people who just doesn’t respond until I understand why the other person is speaking to me. Meanwhile Stark knows that, so he response for Fern for there to not be an occurred silence.
3:00 Meanwhile the words “will I fail if I respond no?” Can just be interpreted as “Is this a part of the test?” Because let’s be honest who wouldn’t be confused Ferns place, if the most powerful mage in the world just asked you to become her student after just a couple of words being exchanged while you know you are loyal to someone else.
Fern is absurdly complicated, because she just lost so much when she was a child. This is probably the reason why she has such a hardcore push and pull dynamic with everyone.

While I believe he went too far in saying Fern wouldn't consider Frieren her teacher, I do believe her lack of a response in that instance was due to her moodiness. A person can feel strong negative emotions toward someone they love, especially teenagers. It's a common occurrence to be temporarily frustrated or angry with friends and loved ones over misunderstandings, to the point where mentioning them could set someone off; I'm fairly certain that's what's happening here: mentioning Frieren just put her in a bad mood and she didn't want to respond. This is the angriest we've seen Fern, after all. Even lots of food and snacks couldn't dispel her mood.

Frieren is a great example of a story that does not assume the audience are idiots. They never give too much "tutorial" or "lectures" on how things work, but we as audience still somehow figure it out and enjoy that process. Makes us feel involved somehow.
In contrast, there are many series out there which either dedicate a whole character or episode to explain/world build the situation for the audience before anything actually happens. Not a bad approach, but now it don't feel like a story, but a news article.

That’s EXACTLY how I feel about shows. That’s what kind of driven me off anime recently. The majority of anime or shows in general these days spoon feed you the story. I want to think what is happening off screen! Like you said, that is what makes it a story, and not a news article.
And even if I didn’t get what happened when I watched it the first time, the joy of figuring it out (either by myself in a later episode, a rewatch, or a video essay) is what makes a fictional piece so good. And with shows like these, there can be different perspectives on the same scene.

It also provides depth when someone decides to rewatch it. When watching a show the first time, the spoon feeding is bearable. But when rewatching, you know about the story and the characters, so when the spoon fed scenes happen, they are incredibly boring. With the subtle style, you enjoy the series way more because you’re like “hey, because of xyz, that’s the reason why xyz happens.” It’s a lot more entertaining on the rewatch

One of my favorite take away from this ep is that it also give us grasp of the difference in experience of the 2 elfs. In both strength and life.
Frieren used to be very indifferent to other's flow of time. She casually spend 10 years on a journey, absentmindedly said lets meet up 50 years later to watch a meteor shower, didn't think too much on how her friends had changed through the years. Only after Himmel death has she started to be more mindful. She listens to Fern concern of not wanting to spend months if not years to look for an extinct flower, she understands how a mere 3 years of time living in a foreign village was enough for Stark to face his fear head on, to protect the villagers that cared for him.
On the other hand, Serie said it unfortunate taking in human apprentices because even tho their potential could rival Frieren, they simply can't because their time couldn't afford it. But she still asks again right when she see Fern's special. In the end, Serie prioritizes the specialities of oneself rather than dismissing it because of elfs prejudice on the length of human life.
It seems Serie already been through this lesson of seeing and appreciating the uniqueness of ephemeral life.

About Frieren being indifferent to other's time, this is best shown by the timelapse in episode 1. The whole 50 years flashed by quickly. For Frieren, it is just a mere 50 years, it might just even be a week for her.
Another way of showing it is by the "XX years after Himmel's death" we typically see at the start of each episode. At first, the gaps are huge, sometimes even taking a year after the last one. Then slowly, the time gap between the two gets shorter and shorter, showing that Frieren is slowly being mindful of her and Fern's time and not wasting months or years in one place.

But unfortunately she can't go against her nature, her desire to see them bloom is way more than her want to not see them wither.

This episode highlighted one of my favorite parts of this show with the mother daughter relationship Fern and Frieren have, like sure they fight but they both take pride in being there for each other even little things like the staff, and how Frieren knew that Serie couldn’t overlook her student because she’s just that good especially since Serie’s own student could never sense the fluctuations in her aura even after 50+yrs but Fern did immediately

Of all the anime i watched, this anime has charm close at heart, i can't explain it. It's not trying to entertain you in a way like most anime, like who's more powerful or weak or at least it doesn't make it the whole point of the story, it doesnt like to standout. It just tells you a story, a good story that's perfectly told. The pacing, the character development is flawless, i mean, i can't imagine someone in this era of AI, can write story such as this.❤

1:49 We have seen it throughout the show that Fern has trouble socializing while Stark doesn't, it feels like she has a hard time talking to strangers and obviously Richter is a stranger to her because they didn't interact in the test. Stark knows that so he helps her by responding in her place.

The little scene with Richter, Fern, and Stark was not in the manga. It's only the second time they've added a scene like that (after the secret door scene in the Tomb of the Ruined King), as opposed to just embellishing what was there already (like the ballroom dance), and it was perfectly done.

My thought as to why she did not answer if she was Frieren's student was more that she knew that was a magical shop and if the staff was basically unsavable (as Frieren told her) she knows he knows that her staff was destroyed and he might try to sell her a new one, something that she was not yet prepared for even though she knew that was likely the case. It was uneasiness with being confronted with something she was not ready for, not that she was reluctant to associate herself with Frieren.

a lot of beats in frieren is similar to a George Lukas quote about star wars "It's like poetry it rhymes"
a more silly example of this is when the first exam ended stark was with this old man saying that stark has learned the essence of a warrior and at the end Wirbel commented that watching stark fight he now knows how a true warrior fight.
most of the time this is used in the flashback scenes comparing frieren's experience with the hero party and her own experience in the present.

Serie only care about Fern's potential, but Frieren actually care about her. Frieren already told Fern that she's gonna pass no matter what so she could have just taken Serie's offer, but it's that one thing that made Fern feel certain Frieren is the best teacher for her.

I understood both sides of the fight. Yeah Fern has sentimental attachment to the staff and that explains her side Frieren however is over a thousand years old and has likely dealt with many things simply deteriorating into shambles through her life regardless of her feelings toward them, so she would see the staff as something that could only ever be temporary.

My favorite thing about this episode is how Serie contradicts herself throughout the episode. She didn't want to teach magic to anyone, but she establishes a magic association. She says that Flamme's favorite spell is the most useless one (I don't remember what she feels specifically about it), but there she goes standing in the middle of a garden appreciating the flowers. She said it's a waste to take in a human student, but with no hesitation asks Fern to be her student after realizing how strong her observation is.

You glossed over extremely important details regarding the hierarchies: Fern suppresses her mana, so the fact that Serie's supporessed mana equals Frieren unsuppressed (as the other character mentioned) it would leave Fern realise just how strong Serie might be and justify why she was so shocked upon entering the room.
Throutout the anime "realising someone is strong" has been a common theme, especially inasmuch as hierarchies are concerned. The anime underlining idea is not just that everyone concerned with a hierarchical power is missing meaning, love, care; but they're even lacking real power and real potential, because hierarchies can be beaten by society/culture as a whole, just like with how quickly humans developed magic by demons (who live in a hierarchical structure).
I wouldn't say the underlying narrative is complitcated but the timing is def something else.

Serie definitely is OP in terms of mana. She suppresses her mana so people won’t be scared but also to tempt/lure people into fighting her. 😂 That’s why there’s instability in her mana, because she’s suppressing it. She really is obsessed with fighting.

wand != staff, frieren != fern the amount of times you mixed up names is crazy

    • @Akumada
      @Akumada  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I was using Staff and Wand interchangeably. The Japanese word used is "杖" (pronounced "tsue"). The translation for tsue is: cane; walking stick; staff; wand. So I was using them both since it can mean both in Japanese and I wasn't thinking about it as just one thing. Especially considering that imo a staff can never be a wand, but a wand can be a staff. And the show is not limited to staffs as I would consider Wirbel's wand to be a wand. So if you want to be that nitpicky then that's fine; you don't ever have to watch my content again since it offended you so much lol
Also, I did not mix up Frieren and Fern. I was pronouncing them more like how they are pronounced in Japanese since I watch it in Japanese. So you might have mixed up what I was saying.
