    Thanks, Annie. I am starting to learn because I have several Vietnamese friends. I am beginning with numbers. Please continue to explain the pronunciation and tone levels as clearly as you do. I have a severe hearing loss and your explanation helps me very much. Regards, Bob

    Oh my goodness! This was the most fun and informative video I have seen yet on basic numbers! Annie you are as cute as a button and your hand gestures help a lot in getting the correct pronunciation down.
    I’ve only seen this one video of yours and had to subscribe immediately! I’m not Vietnamese , just someone interested in the basics of the language after watching the Vietnamese channels on tv at night…
    Thank you for the most helpful instruction!

    Great lessons! I'm anxious to try them with community college Viet friends and at the local Asian supermarkets and restaurants. Mr. Tran at his "Pholicious" eatery will probably smile more as I get my guoi cuon and banh xeo! Thank you ever so much!

    This was great! I have watched so many of your videos, but I skipped this one because numbers is one of the few things I already knew (my boyfriend taught me back in high school - we lost touch and then met again 15 years later and now we're back together, and I'm trying to become fluent to be able to talk to his parents!) But I finally watched and I'm glad I did - you corrected a few things that I was mispronouncing, and it was fun to read out the numbers! It made me realize that wow, I actually know my numbers pretty well!

    Hello Annie. I came to this lesson to renew my Vietnamese, and I have a question. In the video, you said despite the spelling, the a in SÁU and Bảy are pronounced shortly just like ă. Is there any rule for this? When should I pronounce the a shortly as ă? I've watched all the video about pronunciation, and I believe this is not explained yet. Could you help me, please? Cảm ơn rất nhiều.

    • @LearnVietnameseWithAnnie
      @LearnVietnameseWithAnnie  11 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Jiang. When the short vowel ă goes with u and y, we remove its "little moon", so we have au and ay. So the sound is short ă, but the spelling is a. :)

    I don't know why but I mostly seem to forget the number 7 in VN, I have to think about it longer than other numbers. I'll just have to keep repeating all the numbers until there are really stuck in my head =)

    Xin loi, Joseph. "When in Rome (of Danang?) do as the Romans do." Here in the Southwest, learning the dialects of Spanish and indigenous nations has a level of respect by trying to imitate and use their intonations and pitches. Just a thought...

    is this Northern or Southern pronunciation? Thank you for very clear explanation!

    • @ThanhaoCong
      @ThanhaoCong 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evgeny Maslennikov It's Southern accent. Central accent is way more difficult to listen to lol. And actually north people pronounce 's' as English 'sh', south people pronounce 's' and 'x' in the same English 's'.

    So, does this mean "au" and "ay" are always pronounced shortly? Is there anytime that "au" and "ay" are regular "a+u" and "a+y" and pronounced with regular length? Cảm ơn Annie.

    • @LearnVietnameseWithAnnie
      @LearnVietnameseWithAnnie  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Jiang,
      The vowel in "au" and "ay" is always pronounced shortly (because it is a short vowel). Their two counterparts are "ao" and "ai", and we pronounce them with the regular length. So: au is different from ao, ay is different from ai because of the length of the man vowel (short or long a), not because of the final vowel (u or o, y or i). Is it clearer now?

    ugh all these tones and accents are really confusing...

    • @HeyKevinYT
      @HeyKevinYT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But accents are what distinguish words with completely different meanings, such as "cỏ" and "cò"! We Vietnamese need them to make words _less_ confusing :)

      Yes, and on top of that the things you might learn here, or on another site, do not even matter when you are in the presence of a person who the South, or the mid-North, or an old person who speaks the defunct vocabulary.

    You should eliminate the phrase, "easy, right?" Vietnamese is not easy, just like the way you mispronounce "Foreigners" every time. I do like this video, but please get rid of "easy, right?"

  • @danielcunningham9214
    @danielcunningham9214 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why does she have the words in English beneath? I think this is stupid and distracting.
    Other sites have the teachers saying long sentences that are impossible to follow - all the nuances such as tones, dipthongs, aspirations that have to be done right in order for the words to make sense - this is where the spoken words should be printed below the speaker.
