    This week I’m building a Scott 696 and converting it to a 1x10 setup. Originally the bike would have come with 3x8 gearing but as a bit of a tester and to modernise the bike I want to do the conversion. Most modern mountain bikes now come with the 1x setup with either 10,11 or 12 speed on the rear and some cassettes can even go up to 50 teeth. I’ve chosen to go a bit smaller and went for an 11-40 tooth cassette.
    After checking all the cassette, derailleur and shifter were compatible, this is what I’ve come up with. I think I could have gone down to a 110mm or 107mm to bring the chain line in a bit more but it seems to be working fine as it is. I also really want to change the XT V brake as it’s not lining up the pads properly. Despite those 2 things it’s a nice bike to ride. Great for climbing, not so much for top speed!

    Ive done that too, my old 1990’s Marin bike started life with a 3 x 7 drive. Last week I converted to 2 x 11 drive train with a 11 - 40 Cassette. Ditched the old forks for rockshox and disc brake. Still have rim brakes rear. Also gone tubeless tyres. All I’ve knocked 2kg off weight of bike.
    You loose some top end speed with 2 x 11 but I hardly ever used the big front ring so no loss really.
    Great vid nice see a bike build.

    Great video mate. I’ve got my 1992 Kona Hei Hei titanium with rigid Project 2 forks and velocity quill stem set up 1X9 with full XTR 950 drivetrain and hubs. Lovely, fast ride with 1.95 touring tires and 42t narrow-wide up front wth 11-32 in back. I’m using a 9 speed dura ace bar shifter converted to thumbie.

    Just caught this. Excellent vid. Did a very similar conversion about a year ago using a crappy old Raleigh Spirit Nexave a mate gave me. Used many of the same components as you. Spooky! I agree about the Charge Spoon. Very comfy. Used a Stronglight ST55 40t (it's cheap and it works - with a clutch mech) and a Sun Race 11/40 cassette. That combo is just about perfect for the Cornish lanes. Shod it with the Schwalbe City Jets you're not so keen on (cheap and I like 'em). 28lbs (oh yeah!) of fun, fun, fun! Keep on pumping them out, man.

    Clutch is to reduce chain slap & floppy chain (less noise) but also to help chain retention on 1xchainrings. Personally could never get those mech to work superslick in a 1xconversion but worked ok.

    Sunrace cassette - (Sunrace MXC if correct) comes in 11-42 or 11-46 , use to run a 1x10 conversion and I used the 11-42. Race mountian bike XC so now on SRAM NX Eagle 12-speed. Love my retro's too as raced MTB XC/ridden MTB's since 1990 and some 94&96 Kona Kileaua with cantilever's and original XT 8-speed. I raced those Scott comp racing frames in 97/98 bit was the alloy version of what you have.

    • @BruceChastain
      @BruceChastain 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      for like 99% of riding I think big gears are over rated. I've actually been riding a 30 X 11/32 one by on my road bike this year. Yeah it's limited, but it's still possible to cruise at over 30 kph, which for my group rides is enough. That said I'm looking for about a 34t chain ring now.

    That’s a nice rebuild. I think the 1x gears are always a bit limited as I find with my modern Cannondale trail. I run out of spin when my cadence is about 105rpm and I am only doing 24 mph. I have now changed from a 30t to a 32t for slightly better top end but I think it will always be a compromise with 1x but I love the bike.
    My mate with his older 3x MTB has a much better range for all situations.
    Also with the chain line, I have restored an old Raleigh classic racing bike from 1975 this winter and replaced the original bottom bracket with a Shimano cartridge of the same axle length. Didn’t realise that the offset would be different so the small chain ring touched the chain stay so have fitted a 2.5 mm spacer. All appears ok on the service stand but waiting for dry weather to road test it.
    What strikes me is with a derailleur the chain with only ever be straight in one of the gears anyway.
    Thanks for another great video. I learn a lot from you.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a bit of a compromise for sure at the top end. It love a 1x setup for the cleaner design but I do miss the top end of a 3x sometimes! True about the derailleur too!

    no grease on headset cups and seatpost?Man that hurts as well as the rusty screws and rusty scratches on the steerer tube :)

      Grease isn't always necessary on the headset for installation but I have since put some on the seatpost.

    Nice job. But hold bike by the seat post.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hold whever you want really. "Best practice" does go by the seatpost though. For anyone that doesn't know why... If you're over-zealous and crank the clamp tight you run the risk of crushing the tube. You risk damaging the paint too if the bike starts swinging in the clamp.

      @@MonkeyShred fair enough. Working in a bike shop in the 90s and 2000s and a Pro mechanic for while has taught me that there are certainly more then one way to get the job done.

    I think that mothers 1x stuffs is made for hardcore mtb only .. That sort of the bike that you made is more universal .. Tarmac, bad roads, gravel, easy trails will need more range from 2x .. My opinion only
