  • Complete strip-down and restoration of possibly the roughest S-Works mountain bike on the whole of TH-cam. This one has been butchered, fitted with rotten parts and whipped by years' worth of salty air.
    It came up a treat and is once more a super lightweight, pro-class vintage XC racing bike worthy of being cherished.

    I've had so many hobbies over the years--cars, watchmaking, gunsmithing, aquariums, aviation, PCs, but man--bicycles are something special. I'm currently restoring a 1982 Trek 311 and your channel is just the inspiration I need to keep going. You are doing great and deserve more subscribers and views. Keep it up! Oh, and I've noted the watch addiction on your end as well.

      You sound like me and all the male Cheshers before me - we've had lots of obsessive hobbies and collections but bikes is the one that's stuck with me. I hope you're going to document your Trek build? Share link if so. And yes - lots of different watches in shot, I've noticed that too! Very few of my "special" ones get worn in the workshop (except the '70s Longines Conquest at the end of this vid), but I do have quite a variety.

      @@red_dread When you are doing a restoration channel, you kind of become a hand model, so the watches make sense! I've been pretty crap about documenting the Trek resto so far, just been enjoying the process of researching everything.

    Great retro bike and very good and light steel frame. These XTR M900 cranks look as they were stored in a salt mine for decades. A Rock Shox Mag 21 would look awesome on the S-Works steel frame. The end result is very nice :)

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cranks are indeed dreadful aren't they? Pretty sure it lived outdoors on the Northern Scottish coast for some years. As for the fork, the Mag 21 would indeed look great with its gold colour - the original suspension option was the Judy FSX, which was developed especially for this bike in a partnership between RockShox and Specialized. I wonder how much internal technology they actually share with the Mag 21? I have occasionally seen them but the prices are silly and I prefer this bike rigid anyway!

    Nice video! A few suggestions that I’ve learned from rebuilding and cleaning bikes:
    - Use a pipe cutter for precision in cutting tubes to length. It also reduces the need to file the edges and using a power saw to straighten.
    - Fine steel wool pads can help further remove the rust on chrome. There’s a product out there that can also help remove the rust and its waxy film serves as a protective barrier for a few months. Check out a video from Jay Leno’s garage
    - Consider clear coating your frame to protect the decals. Clear coating will also give nice shine to your frame and make it look brand new

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I'm terrified to try wire wool on that fork but I have to try something. Great tip on the Jay Leno channel, I already subscribe to him so I'll go have a look. As for clearcoat, thankfully the S-Works decals are already lacquered over so all it needed was that lovely top wax. You may have seen my Dyna Tech however, where the decals all need sealing back down. Regarding pipe cutters, I have some but couldn't be bothered. I much prefer a shower of sparks for the camera!

      I agree, an original Manitou would look amazing on this build. I'm enjoying keeping it rigid though, just because I love the light weight and twitchy feel of it. Later in the 90s there was actually an official partnership between Specialized and Manitou - in fact my '99 S-Works M4 was available as standard with a Manitou Ti Spring model, although I got mine as frame only.

    just started to watch video, looked at the forks could not have said it better and then thought at that time a pair of pace RC30s several minutes later in your office and what appears, brilliant choice, great restoration not over the top just how i would do it. I did see a video a while back chap has 1994 Kona explosif in good condition, strips it takes cantilever mounts of turns into modern bike , i still have sleepless nights over this.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha, you may or may not like my later vids in which I restore this bike to full XTR as nature intended, and anoint the fork with a pink rattle can. Entirely period correct at least. I tend to agree with you that "restomodding" a classic bike with modern parts is not for me, however we all have different cut-off points for our definition of retro/classic. For me it's 1995. If it had V-brakes when new, it's fair game - as you'll see from my restomodded Bianchi Frankenbike in another video. That thing has bits on it from the mid-90s to the present day and it runs great. Won't keep anyone up at night either, because it was never a thing of beauty. But yes - this S-Works was an abomination that needed to be saved.

      @@red_dread for me, I find that modern mtb's lack character, fragile looking rear mechs which look as if they're about to fall apart, look cheap, look plastic and look mass produced. To me they lack class, but then I started off with a Ridgeback XT in early 85 but soon replaced it with the Saracen Conquest that Nick and Richard Crane took up Kilimanjaro and have had about 20 others since. My current bike which I have had since 2007 was a GT Aggressor for £50. It was used as a trade in and not looked at by the shop and I primarily bought it for my girlfriend at the time as she wanted a smaller frame. However, she declined so I took off all the crap and put on XT 94 gruppo. Love it. Love the channel with lots of reminiscence.

For the crank arms, some 1000 grit sand paper, then a good polish should cut through the corrosion. In Canada, we’re no stranger to corrosion.

    Love the Pace rc30 rigid fork.
    Done the tin foil trick on many chrome parts more recently a 90s GT but started using on chrome from my dads classic car in the 90s does work well.
    I had a flite trans alps on my bike back in the 90s still use it today don't find anything else quite as comfy.
    Shame you can't find some ritchey megabites (I think?) tyres difficult to find but then old tyres and riding is difficult.
    I tried to get an old Sintesi Bromont frame mounted on my bedroom wall at home but my wife didn't like the idea... her fault its now going to cost more because I said if I can't hang it I am rebuilding it...

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was scared to go too hard with that foil - I think it only works if the chrome isn't already peeling. Need to find a more permanent solution. I never rode Flites back in the day but have been putting them on a few of my builds recently because they look so cool. I did once have Megabites, there were recently some gum-coloured limited edition ones on ebay that would have cost hundreds. I think these new Terra One tyres look the business though. I used to have my S-Works M4 frame hanging on the wall but then I rebuilt it to tow my kids' trailer. A lot of my bikes are ornaments nowadays, but on sunny days they'll still get ridden.

    I just recently came across your channel and I share the love of the original old bikes. I do have questions. I don't ever see you checking the interior of the frame and forks for internal rust and when you do find internal rust how are you treating it? How do you know the frame is still sound for use?

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. I do occasionally check but (1) have never bothered filming the process, and (2) have never done a particularly thorough job of it, usually just by eye. I did once have a Reynolds 853 frame with a rusty streak coming out of a drainage hole at the dropout junction, so I dried it out and sprayed a can of Framesaver down inside. But that was a relatively new frame so I guessed my efforts would have nipped any problems in the bud. As for this old S-Works, it's only ever going to get used for light duties on sunny days in its retirement, so I'm not particularly worried! The alloy spoke nipples will fail under my weight long before the frame does.

      Those pink grips now reside on an '89 Saracen where they look perfect. This S-Works nowadays has clear ones so you can admire the blue anodising on the ITM handlebar.

      red_dread That's the one thing that's not stock besides the tires and chain. It uses a custom fork by Rock Lobster. This bike is too pretty for a suspension fork. Its really light for a steel bike and rides really smooth. Ive forgotten, were these frames made by Tom Ritchey? I haven't seen this guy in over a year.
      We both live fairly close to Specialized headquarters. He's right in Morgan Hill. There's lots of those nice old steel frames still floating around here. But Mostly the steel Allez's. This is a rare one indeed. My company sells the most Specialized's in Wackofornia so we are pretty close with them too. I had one of the original Stumpy's but unloaded it.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      RollinRat I’d no idea if Tom Ritchey himself had a hand in these frames, but that might explain why it wears the special Works badge instead of being branded as a standard Stumpjumper. What an honour to have one in my collection! As for original Stumpjumpers, the first one I saw was the 88 one with the Browning Automatic electronic transmission, which blew my tiny mind. I used to work for a S dealer too, so I’ve been very spoiled with lots of S-Works models.

      red_dread Dont get me wrong. I'll never own an SWorks nor a modern Spesh after knowing what I do. As far as I'm concerned they are Special Ed. I just love old steel bikes.
      All I buy are custom made frames from friends I know I can trust. Quality is horrible in the bike industry. I used to be a mechanical inspector!
      I see Special Ed's stupid designs and vindictive business practices. They're certainly not the worst out there, I am just very careful how I spend my money. I once worked in a machine shop building carbon satellite structures. I KNOW how it's supposed to be done. The bike industry can't even come close!

    I’m searching for a 17”-20”, 1995-2001 Stumpjumper M2 or an S-works frame if anyone has one or a lead on one please let me know. My rockhopper frame just started to get hairline cracks so unfortunately need to replace it, figured I’d see if I can get lucky and find a stumpy or Sworks. Even if you’re reading this in a few years from now, I’ll always be interested. Just drop a reply comment and I’ll see it in my notifications and get back to you. Thanks! Love the retro MTB community- you all are great!

      Did you know Specialized has a lifetime frame warranty? As long as you're the original owner of the frame and have some proof of purchase - I recently got a no-quibble replacement for my 2002 S-Works frame after it developed a hairline crack, and that was after about 15 years of hard use!

    You could try various grades of wet and dry (used soapy wet) on the crank arms. I've brought back worse to a mirror finish. sadly, you'll lose the XT graphic. I'm looking for a reliable way to replace component graphics... any ideas? I note your disgust at the bomber forks. Please don't watch any of my videos as you'll end up smashing your computer screen ... my builds are budget, not big buck LOL !!

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm still toying with the idea of sanding a couple of sets of cranks. As for replacing graphics, there's one seller on eBay somewhere in Eastern Europe that sells decent replacement graphics (in the form of decals) for M900 XTR cranks - which look the same but will never be as nice as the original etched and varnished finish. But for others such as XT you'd just have to paint them back on or live without I fear.

    Beautiful build and entertaining commentary, still I think any direct drive cromo fork would look much nicer...it completes the silhouette of a stumpy, which an S-Works steel basically is.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I still don't know exactly what fork this was meant to have - I always thought the Direct Drive was a bit ordinary but perhaps there was a Ritchey-built upmarket one that ought to go on this. I'd never find it though.

    • @red_dread
      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry to say that Bomber is already earmarked for another build. It's a bonded 1" steerer anyway, so would never fit any '02 bike because they would all have been 1 1/8". Yes they are great forks, really simple and robust and deserve their place in history. I just think this bike is a very different style and doesn't need a "big-hit" fork.

      @red_dread  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jdmEg6 I'd guess the 93 Stumpjumper is 1 1/8" steerer but not sure. That's your only constraint really because you can always upgrade headsets/stems to threadless. Period suitable options would be Specialized Future Shock, Manitou II, Rock Shox Mag 20/21 or Quadra. Avoid later longer travel forks, just because your geometry isn't designed for that and it'll throw your handling. Personally I'd keep it rigid and use nice fat tyres for suspension!
