    Plans change again. I bought this Dawes Impulse to “upgrade” and replace my Peugeot Electra. I’d picked up a set of carbon forks and a Shimano 105 groupset at Eroica and I was all set to combine them with the Reynolds 531 to make an awesome bike. Unfortunately the bike ended up being too big for me, the carbon forks didn’t fit (just) and the callipers were just too short to reach. Fortunately I worked it all out and it was an easy sell.
    On the plus side I’ve still got my complete Shimano 600 groupset ready and waiting to go on a special frame... now to find one.

    Just a quick tip for touching up you can get acrylic paints inexpensive weatherproof but spray it with clear ideal for touching you

    I think the orignal looks great, love those steel lugged forks better than carbon forks on retro builds

    Sweet build. That will be a nice, high-speed commuter. Not missing the carbon fork. That lugged 531 fork is perfect!

      I so agree! My heart sank when he said he was replacing this one with carbon....

    I found a few days ago your TH-cam chanel. It´s good to see all this restorations and upgrades for the old bikes. Sometimes I do the same with parts from other bikes and is very rewarding. Cheers.

    I love this stuff. I'm fiddling on a same era bike. I converted the threaded fork steerer to threadless by pinning, and welding, an internal collar into it and extending the tube. Works good. Plenty tough, and I can use shimmed straight ahead stems and modern handlebars. My next mission is to turn the horizontal dropouts into verticals.

    Nice job I have an 1980s dawes galaxy that I will be rebuilding this winter. They make nice bikes. Love the color on that one

    Good choice on the groupset. This 105 set is likely better then the Dura Ace equivalent, of these days.

    Very nice bike, too bad it doesn't fit. Someone will get a great daily rider. On my steel frames I'm salvaging I'm using Hollowtech bottom brackets to save some weight and I like the silky smoothness of them too. Keep up the good work.

    Nice build! I am currently doing this on my ralleigh bike wich I bought painted cheapish red allover and the seller even told me it was a batavus😂 grew really fond of the bike in the last 2 months of owning it and really looking forward to the result, even bought some nice original ralleigh stickers! Im putting a shimano tourney 7 speed derailleur on it paired with a shimano 7 speed freewheel 13-28(chainring is a 50t so okay ratios) and some chinese brifters as I couldn't find any shimano 7 speed brifters in my country.

    As usual a fantastic video Monkeyshred. glad that your shoulder is on the mend.... Looking at some of your previous videos, getting the right distance on the caliper brakes can be a challenge. Maybe most older bikes have 57mm calipers?

      It looks like it. The medium reach seem to be a safe bet for early 90s bikes.

    Some Nail varnish is good for touching up random coloured frames

    More retro upgrades. Like Rayleigh banana with full ultergra and carbon fork,wheels and seat post. Awesome

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would genuinely love to do a Raleigh Banana. Problem is, I'd have to have the 531c version and that expensive... plus people might lynch me for buying a complete one and then modernising it. I'd still do it though if I found the right one.

    The original fork looks great. I think a carbon fork would look out if place on a more classic looking bike.

    Just picked one of these up. Beautiful ride. Recommend tan amber wall tyres that are truer to original and look better

      Tan wall are definitely back in vogue now. You have to pay a premium for good tyres in tan wall though unfortunately.

    Nice vid, but would've liked to see more of the actual work cleaning the frame and fixing up the rust/paint ... rather than just before-and-after shots.

    really wish you rode a 52, I've got a 51cm Lemond Zurich that i could send with a 6500 groupo that would serve you well... the Dawes looks great good job. if you were in the states I could use you at the shop i work at.

    These road bike rebuilds are great. How possible is it to do a disc brake conversion, hydraulic or cable? The brakes on my '86 BRC are TERRIBLE

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should be pretty simple on the front if you can find a fork. I'm not sure how common a 1" threaded of threadless fork with a disc caliper might be.

    hello, You said that Dawes is 57 whereas You prefer 54 - is that really so much that Dawes seems to be to big for You? I am asking because I have Scott Laredo that is 52 and Trek 7600 (which I really like) but is 56. So I wonder whether Scott is to small or Trek is to big for me.. Anyway, how tall are You :) ?
    ...and as always, great video.
    regards

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was unfortunately. When I rode it I felt small on it. That could have been a combination of the original bars, the stem length and the frame size but it didn't feel it fit me to my proportions. The 54cm Raleigh Record Sprint fits me perfectly though. I have gone down to a 51cm on an old fixed gear aswell and that felt great.
