This bike wasn't ridden much but simply was neglected out in the rain. Happy you rescued it! The next owner really gets a solid bike ready for thousands of miles.
What a great idea. Maybe you could find someone through a local charity who could benefit from the gift of a new bike? I like the idea of it going to someone less fortunate. Keep up the great work!

That blue headset looks tasty. Will be interested to see what ideas you get for passing it on - you might have seen I have a free bike needing a good home too! Not my free Scott though, I'm keeping that (not least because I can't yet be sure it won't explode and kill someone).
One of those moments you realize again how scarcely seeded the idea of sustainability was in the nineties and noughties. My appreciation for cleaning and fixing this (or any other) bike
Are you sure youre not confusing something there? I think in the nineties it was still quite normal to buy things to keep them many years. Today we buy things to trash them and buy something new next year. Today we get flooded by cheap bikes, electronics and stuff from China. Today it's so special when someone repairs an old bike, that we make and watch videos about it. From how I experienced it, there was still much more sustainability in the nineties and noughties than today. At this time sustainability just wasn't just a buzzword like it is today.

@@jeanyluisa8483 I just rebuilt two 90s mountainbikes last year. With spares being fairly expensive, it would have been cheaper to just buy two new (crap) bikes instead, but where's the fun in that?
(Apart from that, one of the two sat in the garage for 20 years and man did it feel good to finally fix it up!)
Heh, my free bikes often come from skips or the backs of old sheds that are being sorted out ready for chucking in the bin. I think we can safely say they're a bit dirtier/rustier than that one was (but they the tend to be a bit older too). Good quickie restoration though. I've sent quite a few "saved" bikes to local refugee groups (often run by local councils) as they are people who have lost everything and really appreciate getting some wheels.
Two free bikes here.
About twelve years ago, I was given a 1984 Carlton Kermesse. Otherwise it would have gone to recycling in the metal section. It was in a real state, but now it is a real wonderful ride. It was a daily commuter for ten years, and so after ten years of work, it does show sign of use, if not abuse.
Two weeks ago I was given a [c, pre-1970] Raleigh "Wayfarer" that I am cleaning sympathetically with paraffin. There is a certain amount of surface-rust in the insides of the mudguards and fairly minor scuffing on the general enamel. I plan to de-rust the frame enamel damage [minimal] and do a bigger job on the inside of the mudguards, to prevent early rusting. Then electrify it! Make it a real heavy-weight electric assist bike that does not involve any modification to the original that can cannot be put back to original stock issue.
It has some lovely original period accessories like a high quality ally pannier frame, and stand.
It had a Sturmey Archer front hub dyno-hub and light set, but that will not do nowadays. I would like to get a proper front wheel without dyno-hub, so that I can remove the old dyne-hub and replace with an an ellectric assist front hub ...
I am sixty in two months, so the pleasures of the high geared Carlton are for high days and holidays!
The Raleigh will be a real practical bike for an old guy.
I shall do a walk around video of the two of them when the Raleigh is finished in non-electric re-build.
The two bikes are complimentary. Each in their fashion, wonderful.
Love your vids, though the MTB posts are less interesting, as one who thinks that paths should be walked!

Hey George. Sound like you got some good finds there and have definitely made good use of the Carlton! Will you be keeping the 3 speed on the Wayfarer too? I can assure you the only paths I ride on are cycle routes :)
@@MonkeyShred Yes, I am going to keep the three speed hub-gears. My hope is to keep the bike very nearly original, and when [or if I can ever afford it] the electric assist front hub is fitted, it will be easy to remove if I [or the next owner] wants to go back to original.
Sorry. I did not mean to suggest that you rode MTBs off the proper paths, but quite a few people do and that does bug me a bit.

Bought the 2002 model for cheap last month, it was a good bit more work to fix it than yours as it was super grimy, but very satisfying to finally get there!

I'd fix up more bikes if it was possible to sell them on without making a loss. my Racing Expert would owe me 70 euros (20 for the bike, 50 for new or used spares, not factoring in the reusable parts I still had) and nobody would be willing to pay that. Shame really that most people would prefer a brand new 200 € bike with far inferior quality

Got a circa 2000 Bianchi mtb, very simple, full rigid, Altus groupset and so on, for 15€. Free of charge i got some surface rust and worn out decals. After a good clean and 30 euro between cables and brake pads (a bit overpaid I guess :p ) it rode like a champ. Sadly i'm 5ft7 and the frame was a 21", so I rode it quite stretched out just a couple times before selling it.
But it made me want to get another bike, properly sized this time, to fix and enjoy!
Scott have always had the best paint jobs!
I don't know about that... Alpinestars / Klein / GT... loads do rad paintjobs!

Few years back I used to do a lot of fixing at a COOP. This was some kind of ASMR. Great video!

For a bike I’d be selling on not really worth changing a headset just maintaining bearings with fresh grease. I’d also recommend a washing up bowl, brushes and fairy liquid it seems basic but is the best way to clean parts like these without an ultrasonic cleaner.

Idk why but that rear hub looked wonky, like the axle was slightly bent.
Not elusive at all in USA. Find in garbage all the time.

I bought a similar model (Comp Racing) in similarly grimy state last week, cost me the equivalent of 50 quid. Still worth it as the frame really is quite light! Truing the rear wheel was annoying though...

I do have a question, I'm a MTBer from the 90s with an old Kona, and I'd love to turn my hand to one of these. Where do you find the parts and bikes?
eBay or Facebook market place are both good places to start depending on where you are shpock and gumtree might be worth looking at too. I know someone who gets stuff from the scrapyard and builds up bikes.

2nd hand Deore? Those usually go for 20 or so... 60 should get you much snappier XT shifters (sl-m770)

think I'd have been tempted to go drop-bar, 1X and cantis - just to change it up :-)
If anyone can help me, the teeth skips between the chain when I try to add strength to my pedalling. I changed the cogs on the rear derailleur which did reduce the number of chain skipping considerably but it is still there. I think the teeth is not that worn out. What do you think is the problem??
Skipping is usually caused by a worn drivetrain, you're right. Just changing the jockey wheels on the derailleur won't fix anything. It's probably a badly worn chain / cassette. You can buy a cheap chain checker to monitor wear. If the whole system is very badly worn it could even be the front chainrings. Mixing a new chain with old cassette can also lead to skipping chain.
Or a badly aligned rear derailleur could do the same thing.
@@MonkeyShred thanks for sharing knowledge! Yes I have a brand new chain on it so I am mixing the old cassette and a new chain. But can you teach what am I then suppose to do? Should I just keep on riding it until the chain starts to fit with the cassette?
