    IT’S DONE!!
    Thank you all for the support and comments during this build. I’m so happy with how it’s turned out and I hope you all like it too.
    The bike was purchased for £20 from the original owner back in January. After all these years it was nearly completely original, having only had a replacement wheel in that time. Naturally that meant the seat post hadn’t been adjusted either and it was seized solid. It was a massive fight to remove it!
    When it was out I took the frame to get powder coated, order some awesome decals from the US and set about thoroughly cleaning up all the components. That’s pretty much where you find me in this video so grab a cuppa, sit back and enjoy.
    The build total is around £200 now but seeing as it’s staying in my collection... I don’t really mind. It’s worth every penny.

    I have a dark emerald green 1993 Specialized RockHopper. I rode it for 16 years until 2009 and then I had kids and well it ended up unused in the garage. During some remodeling in Aug 2017 it ended up in the back yard left exposed to the sea air and elements. Flash forward to Feb 2019 and I decided to clean out the backyard. It was a well worn bike already although only a few impact marks but I figured it would go to the dump. Alas I decided to give the girl one last wash and WD 40 treatment mainly for nostalgia reasons. The changeable parts were mostly rusted but remarkably the frame, breaks and rims are in great condition and the decals still in place including the Made in the USA to the left of the “Specialized”. I have a new project. Your video inspires me! Cheers mate.

    Idk what it is about the retro mountain bikes but they just put a smile on my face. Great job, man. I cleaned up a 94 univega alpina 5.3 that was in great condition and then did a giant atx 760 (idk what year) but it was too big for me. It could have used paint but i sold it to an older guy on craigslist who seemed happy with it. I'm picking up a 90s Hardrock tomorrow after work. I am gonna take time and have this one painted. I'll probably run it SS and put avid single digit 7s on it. I have a 2018 marin pine mountain that is setup for off road touring. I want a bike that i can just go cruise around on mindlessly. Hopefully it turns out nice like this one. I love thoe decals!

    Came across your Channel a few nights ago and have watched alot of your videos in that time.I myself have restored 4 of my own bikes that was lay in the shed for years all date around early to mid 1990s no resprays needed all stripped down cleaned and fully serviced.Now on my 5th bike which needs a respay its an early to mid 1990s Dawes Impulse. So after watching your videos so I think I'll do a video of the rebuild. Really enjoyed watching keep the videos going.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! You have a Dawes Impulse eh? It wouldn't happen to be the mint green and silver version would it...? I'm doing a build on one of those tomorrow :)

    • @dinsycycling1016
      @dinsycycling1016 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the bike was origianly Blue on the rear green in the middle and White on the front of the frame, the forks was the same colour off blue, I hope this makes sence. Also the previous owner decided to try and respray it mint green and silver he also put different components on. The bike had been laying about in damp sheds as the paint job wasn't very good the frame has a lot of surface rust so sand blasting then powder coating I'm going to do it a gloss black I think. I have seen that frame on your facebook page was waiting to see if your doing a video on it.

    Great job, usually, I prefer skin walls on a bike of this period but here the black tyres suit the grey frame just fine. The only thing I'm not understanding is, after going to the trouble of powder coating, new decals and cables you neglected to fine detail the chrome work. The metal/chrome on the hub quick release leavers and brake components could have been de rusted further quite easily. Doing so would have made this bike look brand new. Never the less a very nice build.

    I had the 88 Ridgeback 602 which was a poor man’s equivalent for about £100 less than one of these. All I have left of it today is those Exage brake levers, it’s perhaps my life’s greatest regret that I let the Ridgeback go. I’m particularly impressed that you found such a perfect saddle plus the Cosmic Trail bag - not easy. Also I love the home-made looking Shark Fin - even though there are NOS Deore XT ones all over eBay, that’s far more authentic to what most of us would have had as kids. Lovely touch.

    Watched at 0.25x speed & learned alot, thx! Had 2 Qs:
    i) easy enough to install front suspension on this model? I’ve seen another of your videos doing such, but did not quite understand how to assess the bike for upgradeability (to front suspension fork).
    ii) how to determine year of manufacture?
    I’ve got an early 90s RockHopper from orig owner, and wanted to try air shock on front (had my beloved ‘98 same model stolen here in Mesa, AZ).

    The Rigida Laser rims are designed with a 'lip', the inner face never sat flush with the braking rims and over hung a couple of mm. They were probably not that worn. Just In case you come up against them again mate. Actually bulletproof rims, early 90's midrange Diamond backs and Raleigh Dynatechs had them as standard.

      Not sure off the top of my head. I don't have the bike anymore. I think another one I had recently had a 117mm BB. I mention it in the video. (Check recent videos)

    Hey, where did you get the decals? I just got an 89 rockhopper and the decals are in rough shape!

    How does it ride? I have a 1998 rockhopper. I replaced the original shock and handlebars. I also liked the 21 speed gripshift. But sadly I got hit by a car last fall and rims and shock and derailer are wrecked. Now I’m bikeless. Gonna try and save up for a new rockhopper.

      Great. Really smooth. The friction on the front ring is actually quite nice. It allows that little bit of extra fine tuning. It won't be hitting the trails though. It's too nice for that

    Nice work man! I recently acquired an older Rockhopper that I'm working on, how can I determine the year it was manufactured? I located the stamp on bottom of frame it reads PW307784. Any help greatly appreciated.

      I worked mine out by looking at the components first to get a rough date. Shimano are always stamped with a date code. Then I just Googled Specialized brochures from that time and found the matching bike.

    What's the tool called to remove BB? Looks like an Octalink type socket.

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's just a "regular" bottom bracket tool. Shimano type I guess. There's so many different "brands" making them.

    do you have any tips for buying parts at a lower cost?

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This might sound strange but try and buy a whole bike... Sometimes it's worked out cheaper for me to buy a whole bike and sell off what I don't need than to try and piece together what I do need from single items. Also look for "job lots" of people clearing their own "junk"

    Was it Hloyd cycles that ignored you?

    • @MonkeyShred
      @MonkeyShred  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, not at all. It was some random site I found on Google. They're in the UK however the site doesn't look finished and possibly inactive. It still let me add things to the cart though which was weird.

      Do I fancy one? Not really George. If it still has the rear disc that's a cool little part though! I've actually just bought another retro MTB and it's over on Insta... but... I think you've seen that as I've just realised you follow me!

      Yea i bought it as a display piece, it has the wheel disc and has been ridden less than 10 miles was thinking of riding it for eroica but lost interest. I understand having too many bikes I am thinning the collection atm
