Everything is true about this video, appreciate the truth, been in the bodywork since I was a kid, and any type of painting, the preparation is 3/4 the work, painting is the east part., so pay attention to this dude.
Been using SEM for 15 years. Great product. Acetone is perfect prep. Sometimes mixing 50/50 acetone and 99% isopropyl alcohol helps it not flash off to quick on the leather. With leather I noticed that when it gets a little tacky from the prep it’s the best time to spray it, perfect bond.
I used SEM Color Coat after I saw a mechanic use it to change color on a salvage yard steering wheel. So I did it, prep is key to success with all painting. I thought Duplicolor only did exterior paints. I'm very happy with my results. Your upholstery work has helped me alot. Thanks.
"Don't get brain hurt" Probably the best advice I ever heard. Try the heavy yellow gloves that are sold for washing dishes, they hold up to lots of solvents and strippers. Much better than latex or nitrile

My Dad was in the printing industry. I used to go to work with him in grade school. He taught me the in's and out's. I learned about quality, the different paper stocks. We'd go to the back of paper Mills and get broken boxes of high end paper stocks incredibly cheap. Clients were very impressed with his attention to detail. (I liked your comment. It reminded me that spending time with my Dad taught me a lot. Thanks. And this channel is Awesome.)
Very helpful thank you. I've removed then spray painted a few pieces of interior plastic with good results. I haven't painted more because I'm concerned that I won't be able to reattach what was removed. Taking the plastic off is a tricky procedure. Be very care and take photos before removal to reference when reattaching the plastic.

I chuckled when I saw those Vette interior pieces. I was thinking "high risk" as a first thought. (Lots of damage and neglect over the years.) The end product looked GREAT! 😃

Experience creates good advice. Here is you visual guide with tips. I prefer to use a rattle can sprayer. I bought one in 2010 and will never spray can paint without it. Fits most any can, is handle is on and shaking, double check the spray window before using. Great info!

Thanks for covering this and presenting SEM products to the masses. A lot of people are not familiar with their products. Was a little surprised you didn't use some variety of scotch pad or SEM's grit based soap to abrade the surface.
Hello J, You are so welcome! Acetone always gets the job done. It is very harsh on plastics and vinyl's. I was using that decades before there ever was a pad or grit soap. I have never had a problem. Don't be too surprised and although those might be helpful I don't think they are always necessary.
Also with the acetone use a proper nylon bristle brush, with a wood handle, unpainted, to clean in the tiny crevices, and get all the dirt out. You can use isopropyl alcohol there, to get the dirt free and out, then use a blonde medium paint brush with the acetone to degrease and prepare the surface, stripping off the top layer of oxidised material, which is what the acetone does on plastic and leather. Do not leave the surface wet for any time, the acetone will destroy the plastic is left in contact, you want the minimum time on surface to clean and strip, nothing more. However for plastic where it has a embossed surface that has worn away, you can actually use the acetone to restore this, using a terry cloth rag folded into a flat even pad, that is pressed into the surface wet for around 30 seconds, to make the surface ripple and match the rest somewhat. Also works for surfaces that have been plastic welded to fix them, to sort of hide the weld line.
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Yes, only thing I would like is a way to fix soft vinyl, that all eventually cracks and peels away from the foam underlay, that looks good.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I needed this simple tutorial to find a temporary solution to changing my vinyl color from light blue to semi gloss black on my Checker A-11 Taxi!
I’ve been doing interior painting since 03 and this technique is 💯 but I just started putting clear coat to protect it from scratches and it last for a long time. The one flaw or recommendation is if you going to clear you dashboard use semi gloss due to the fact when the sun hits it it’s going to give a mean glare but it’s nice at night tho.
Hello Dare, I have never used a clear coat myself. Being that SEM is a lacquer, you could put a top coat of enamel clear over it. Give it a try! Please keep liking and watching!

I used the Shadow Blue for my 85 Suburban door panels, and it is a very close match to the original color. I washed it 3 or 4 times with soap and water and did a bit of light sanding to remove the sun damage / flaking Cleaned it with acetone and 3 coats of SEM, Fantastic results! I just did one panel to start, to get the hang of it.

I'm glad I found this video, and now I know what to do with some interior parts of my 01 Sonoma that's been showing years of fade under the California Sun.
If longevity is more of a concern to me, would using a material like a faux suede wrap or similar help. I know for complex pieces this isnt really optional but for something simple like the A pillars im considering it.

Great information thx. I’ve just recently found your channel and subscribe. Love what you do here. Thx for sharing your years of experience working with interiors. Much appreciated 👍🏻✌🏻
I have always used laquar thinner instead of acetone. Is there a difference? I also lightly sand the vinyl/leather as well. I have seats I did 20 years ago with still awesome results today! Even though I love the spray vinyl cans, I prefer using the liquid dye I apply with form brushes or spray with a gun. The "liquid" is definitely more durable. I have it mixed "flat" with no shine at all! I have heard of applying an overcoat to protect the color, but have never used it. Again, I would use "flat"! I hate shiny leather!
Hello Richard, Lacquer thinner does work, but acetone is harsher and makes the surface rough enough for the spray dye to stick to plastics and vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!
Wow I really appreciated this how to paint plastic interior parts video. Besides cleaning with the acetone, I saw that SEM sells a plastic adhesion promoter.....have you used and recommend that ? thank you again sir for this video.
Hello Silicone, You are so welcome! I myself have never used the SEM adhesion promoter. For 44 years, I have been using Acetone decades before there was a SEM adhesion promoter. Please keep liking and watching!
I only wish I would have found this channel a week ago… had no idea about acetone. Looks like I’ll have to redo my interior next summer…. With SEM products…. Instead of this cheap a$$ duplicolor…Fantastic video sir will definitely be watching more of your videos.
Hello! I saw on another video that someone used some Scotch pads to scuff up the center console they were painting. Do you use that or sandpaper to rough up the plastic or vinyl so the paint will adhere? he was using duplicolor so it wasnt a laquer
Hello Mathew, I have used scotchbrite pad in the past, but I would not use sandpaper. Lacquer is very thin and will not hide the scratches. Acetone is very harsh and etches the vinyl and plastics for the spray dye to adhere. I saw a video where he inadvertently sanded off the fake vinyl grain off the plastic. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Thank you so much! this helps. would you ever use a scotchbrite again or is acetone enough that you dont need to scuff it up?

Hello H, You are so welcome! I always serve my customers when ever they need some help. I would give them a left over can if they request it. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Lance, Thank you so much for saying so. I would not sand before painting as the SEM is a very thin lacquer and will show grit scratches. Adhesion is the purpose of the Acetone. Please keep liking and watching!
Great video! I've been wanting to do this to my boat seats and been trying to decide between Duplicolor and SEM. There is also another company called Colorbond. Has anyone used their vinyl paint?
Hello Ben, Thank you so much for saying so! No scuffing, just Acetone. Be careful of scuffing or sanding beforehand as because the dye is really thin lacquer, you could see grit scratches. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello O, Yes it is for vinyl and leather. Fabrics and carpets it will work but it will be stiff and not look so great. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!

hello, i have sprayed my seats and looks good but when i put a finger to see if it is dry, a dust of spray remain on my finger.. what can i apply to not stick to my clothes?

Hello Judy, I agree with you. I try to show the more affordable alternatives to the more expensive products. There is so much you can do with Acetone for adhesion, and Mineral spirits for cleaning and removing glue. Please keep liking and watching!
Thank you for this video. Regarding the issue of the paint scratching, are there clear coats that could be sprayed over the paint that might help protect the color layer from scratching?
Hello Jeef, You are so welcome. Technically, being that it is lacquer, you can spray anything over the top. I myself, have never done that. Please keep liking and watching!
I saved a bunch of money, almost $5 per can vs locally, by getting my SEM from eBay. I think I paid $16, but after I got 6 cans, I noticed the price jumped. I don't know how much it matters, but I scuffed the surface, washed with dawn, used acetone, sprayed an adhesion promoter from SEM (I heard of bulldog too), then sprayed SEM paint.
Hello G-body, I hear ya. I always bought SEM from suppliers and it just got more and more expensive. I think Bulldog is similar to Acetone. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Concept, As a painter, you probably use "Bull Dog" or something similar. As in the video, I use Acetone which is a similar adhesion promoter. I used to use Bull dog as well before I found that Acetone was much cheaper. Please keep liking and watching!
Rudy, another straight shooter video!! With respect to OEM plastic trim parts, aren’t they all finished with a color coat that may be prone to wear and tear?
Hello Hobson, Thank you so much for saying so. Some manufactures had painted parts, some the parts are in colored plastic. The paint can wear off. The colored plastic can fade. Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks for the feedback, I have a 97 Dodge Ram 2500 that I have been in the process of restoring the plastic parts. I had to pretty much start with a good sub core dash assembly and a new dash cap from LMC. I prepped the replacement sub core by using 80 grit sanding on the inside of the dash assembly and then epoxy glassed everything. The ABS plastic Textron used for Dodge dash parts was subject to UV damage after a few years, especially in the southern states. This will keep the dash from falling apart and cracking. Next I got the trim color code from the interior and contacted SEM technical support, they said the Mist Gray was only available in spray on mix. So they gave me the formula and the name of the local SEM jobber, they also provided me with products for clean, prep and adhesion. I followed their instructions and the dash came out practically factory!! I was impressed with factory color match and sheen. This project has been the proverbial peeling the layers of the onion back, always something to repair or replace…lol

@@joaquimt.duarte2538 Hello Joa in Portugal, Thank you so much for saying so! Really, I still think the secret is in how well the surface is prepped for anything to stick. good day sir, I recently purchased a vinyl seat but the colour is so off. I was just wondering if I could use this product and completely change the colour of it to something more universal like black or brown instead of re-order the whole thing ? will it last just as good as stock colour ?
Hello Mighty, I am so sorry to hear about your common bad experience with aftermarket seat covers. You can change the color using SEM or other spray dye products, BUT. It is better to stay close to the vinyl color for better coverage as a contracting vinyl color will be more difficult to cover. Also, know that spray dye products are not permanent and will rub off over time. Please keep liking and watching!

Questions...I know you're an avid user of SEM interior paints, but could I use the exact paint from Everest Auto and get the same results you did in the video if I wipe down the doors with acetone first? I want confidence in knowing that I'm using the right paint, I don't want different-colored doors. Also, should the door panels be removed from the car before being painted? No sanding needed, right? Please advise. Thank you!

Another great video, to the point, concise, logical. The right way.
Hello 31, Thank you so much for saying so! I really appreciate it! Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Sean, yea, just like you said! Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Yes, only thing I would like is a way to fix soft vinyl, that all eventually cracks and peels away from the foam underlay, that looks good.

Hello Darrin, I have made some mistakes so you don't have to. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Early, You are so welcome! Thank you so much for your wonderful kind words! Please keep liking and watching!

When spray painting a dash, do I need to sand it first?

Thank you for this video. Regarding the issue of the paint scratching, are there clear coats that could be sprayed over the paint that might help protect the color layer from scratching?
Hello Jeef, You are so welcome. Technically, being that it is lacquer, you can spray anything over the top. I myself, have never done that. Please keep liking and watching!
I saved a bunch of money, almost $5 per can vs locally, by getting my SEM from eBay. I think I paid $16, but after I got 6 cans, I noticed the price jumped. Hello Kenneth, You are so welcome! Please keep liking and watching!
As a painter, we would use an adhesion promoter before spraying on plastics.
Would you recommend something like that for interior as well??

I don't want to paint over all my controls, since the screen transfer printing is still ok, but do you have any advice on motorcycle handlebar controls (aluminium and plastic) to make the black black again, and leave the red switches red, white lettering white, etc.?
Thanks!!!
Hello Paradox, I am not sure what you have. But I would think if the controls are always touched, they should have something like a hard shell finish like a thick enamel. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery mostly, the plastic had faded, so I was wondering if there was a treatment like a trim restorer that would not color over the writing... I might try a trim restorer, or a rubber product, like tire shine.
Do you think the SEM products work on outdoor fabric and vinyl?
Thanks for the quick reply!!!!
@@paradoxworkshop4659 You are so welcome! I guess you can try some of those things. I would not suggest s spray for fabrics, but on vinyl, the SEM should work for outdoor vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!
Awesome!!
Hello Unfinished, thank you so much! Thanks for hanging in there with me! Please keep liking and watching!
I love your channel and I learn so much from it. Watching you have given me the courage to repair and paint my own leather seats. I plan to spray Seat Doctor's Leather Dye on the seats via air compressor. Will my results look as good as yours? Thanks!
Hello Dat, You are so welcome! I think your leather seat dye project will be just fine. Just go for it! Please keep liking and watching!
Must agree with David Boy! I’m also into upholstery as a beginner and your channel is probably the best I came across, much love from Portugal, if you come here count me to help you having the best holidays and a place to stay!
Doing my plastic interiors for a BMW e39 530d and really want to do it well, you should make a whole video on dyes, pigments, understanding it if you are into it. Just like you doing with other techniques.
I am thinking why we don’t make an epoxy over the plastics cover which can be sanded so it becomes more nice to the eye and feel, does that make sense? Do you have an opinion?
@@joaquimt.duarte2538 Hello Joa in Portugal, Thank you so much for saying so! Really, I still think the secret is in how well the surface is prepped for anything to stick. The design of the SEM is to mimic the look of vinyls and leathers. If you wanted a more durable and shiny look, you could use an enamel for plastics. Please keep liking and watching!
Your pretty good at what you do , I like your videos you don't need to put that grime on the pieces to make them look worst just keep your honest videos going
Hello Jose, The customer attempted to clean the plastic and vinyl parts with Acetone himself to save money. That is what they looked like when he handed them back to me. Please keep liking and watching!
good day sir, I recently purchased a vinyl seat but the colour is so off.
I have a 1963 MGB Roadster in Guards Red.
It has a hideous Camel colored interior, door cards, kick panels ETC. also Camel colored genuine leather seats.
I want to go black.
I bought all the SEM products to do this , any recommendations.
Thanks.
Liked and subscribed a few months back.
Hello Jeff, I like the older MGB's. Thank you so much for the sub, I really appreciate it! The best advise I can give is make sure you apply plenty of Acetone for the prep. Don't worry too much as it dry's quickly. Please keep liking and watching!

Can one use this on leather seats or is dye better? Thanks !
Hello The, You are so welcome! SEM spray can be used on leather and vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!
Great video, thank you! Do you have any suggestions for a 2002 Lexus IS300 with the sticky dash problem?
Hello Green, Thank you so much! Do you mean sticky as in adhesive sticky, or the vinyl itself became sticky? What i use for glue removal is mineral spirits. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery On the 2002 IS300, the dashboards are sticky, leave fingerprints to the touch and look gross. The factory refused to replace or help out. They are defective.
@@GreenEyesAnthony Hello Green, Yep, sounds to me like the material or compound used to form the dash. I have never had to try to fix that. Please keep liking and watching!

Can you do the seat belts with this color coat
Hello Tlan, Sorry to say that It does not work well with seatbelts. The seat belt material just soaks it up and does not cover evenly. Please keep liking and watching! 😀
Can you paint leather too or just vinyl and plastic? What would be the best way to paint the interior without taking all the different parts out of the vehicle?
Hello Patrick, Yep good for leather too. You don't have to remove all parts, but the result will always be better if you do. Please keep liking and watching!
Ive used this brand and it's great
Hello Major, Yep, good 'Ol SEM. Please keep liking and watching!
So, how would you suggest changing interior colors? Trying to go from a light grey to black.

@@oldschoolautoupholstery Follow up question, how do you restore brittle old plastic so that it isn’t as brittle? I’ve got an 84’ Fiero that sat in a yard for 21 years, and I’m working on the interior now. Naturally, all the plastic bits are dry and brittle. Is there a way to re-hydrate them so they aren’t so bad?

Excellent video Rudy. I have a quick question, I'm repairing a Holden Torana lower dash panel, which is made from pressed metal with a vinyl textured paint finish. It has a crack in the metal (it might be a replacement part from a wrecked car I recon) that has had a dodgy repair done previously and has opened up again. Can I V-out the crack and fill with a metal filler, then just clean with acetone and spray with the SEM Colour Coat, or is there a better way that you can suggest? Cheers Andy
Hello Andy, Thank you so much for saying so. I'd say a metal repair would be first. The SEM is for vinyl and leather, not metal. Maybe a special body shop can handle that repair? Please keep liking and watching!
@oldschoolautoupholstery Thanks for your your swift reply Rudy. I may have to look into finding a local restoration shop for this one. I appreciate your honesty mate. Keep up the good work 👍

Hello Richard. Thank you again for a very informative video. I did have a question. I wanted to touch up my leather gray sofa. Can I use mineral spirits instead of acetone? I'm worried I'll damage the leather. Thank you so much.

Hello Leo, You are so welcome again! Hehe. Mineral spirits will do a good job of cleaning the leather but will not do anything for adhesion. Acetone is the adhesion promoter you need. Please keep liking and watching!
Been using SEM since the mid 80s. It's the best hands down
Hello Brian, I could have also said the same thing. Maybe we have parallel lives? Hehe Please keep liking and watching!
Greetings! VERY cool video! Thanks for taking the time to post! Would've LOVED to have seen the final results in the car!! I have acetone as part of my cleaning arsenal, so I'm part of the way there to re-painting the interior doors of my 2022 Chevy Malibu. Although it is used (Only 43K miles at the time of purchase), it is new to me! The interior doors are vinyl and have scratches that I want to remove. The color is "Dark Atmosphere." I found the exact color on Everest Automotive (WA303X - OEM ). They claim that it's a premium polyurethane base coat. SEM has a similar color that they named Med Neutral (15883 SEM). Thank you!
Hello Chelsa, Thank you so much for saying so! Sorry to say that I have never used Everest auto paint, therefore I do not know a result. I think removal will give a better result. No sanding, because you will see grit scratches. Just use the Acetone. Please keep liking and watching!
