How To Paint or Dye Vinyl and Leather

  • Changing the color of your interior can be done in several ways, and in this video, we show you how to paint vinyl and leather. With just a few bucks for a can of paint, painting your seats, door panels, or other interior pieces can be pretty simple. By following a few simple tips and tricks, the final product can look good and last a long time. On the contrary, if some of these are not followed, it will look like a pile of trash and not last long at all.
    Changing the color of carpet or cloth (velour) seats can be done with a Dye like RIT, which can be sponged or sprayed on. However, for this occasion, we're dealing with changing the color of a vinyl console cover. Leather will be treated the same way as we do the vinyl.
    First, as with just about any procedure, cleanliness is next to Godliness. Make sure the surface you are treating/painting is free of dirt, debris, and contaminants. Warm water and dish soap is always a great general cleaner. Once clean, ensure that the surface is thoroughly dried. Be sure to tape off any areas that you don't want to be painted. As a final prep before painting, wipe the entire area with a Wax & Grease Remover (this can be purchased at a paint supplier), or you can use Isopropyl Alcohol as well.
    Now that you're ready for paint, I can't stress enough that you have to use light coats. You'll be tempted to cover everything with paint right out of the gate, but don't do it. Make the first coat a very light dust coat. You're literally just building tack coats for the next coats to stick to. In fact, it may by 3+ coats before all the area is covered. Let the coats dry to a uniform color before applying the next coat. We applied at least 5 coats to this console cover, and we achieved great uniform coverage and something that will last for years without rubbing off.

    I have fairly extensive experience with this particular paint, and I am telling anyone watching this. that he is RIGHT.. This is a GREAT how to do things properly video. The first few light coats ARE the key to a recover job that actually STICKS. DO NOT BE IMPATIENT. You will regret it. This is the MOST accurate vinyl tutorial I've come across on you tube that fully echoes ALL of my experience. My only criticism would be that "wait a few minutes" is a bit vague ... Pretty sure he means 5- 10 minutes from my own experience with similar products.. ( the SEM vinyl paints he mentioned are what I have more experience with) Why am I looking at vinyl painting videos then You might ask...? I'm not.. I'm looking for videos on how to repair holes in vinyl and this one came up... Not what I was looking for.. but, I'm always up to see if I can learn any new tips!. Glad to see there is some actually good advice on you tube still.

      What about the smell? I wanna do my seats in my bmw, but I don't want me car smelling like paint for a month

    • @kalynnkallweit7940
      @kalynnkallweit7940 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@cartertaion I wont lie, it IS going to smell for a while, I highly recommend you remove the seats from your vehicle to paint them, and wear a respirator, or at the very least a particulate mask. As for how long it will smell for, That depends on if you put them back in the car right away, effectively sealing the smell of the paint drying/ offgassing insie your car, or if you leave them out of the car to air out for a week or so. You'll probably be able to smell the paint for a week to two after that a bit, but honestly, that "new car small" people seem to love is literally all the plastics in the interior of the new car off gassing just like your paint will be doing for a short time. Happy painting MMIX

      The video was for vinyl ie a soft surface. Is painting a hard surface like a dashboard the same product and same technique?

    • @kalynnkallweit7940
      @kalynnkallweit7940 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dave7655 I would say yes, the application would be the same on a mroe rigid plastic surface like a dashboard, but SEM also makes a spray product called "Bumper Coater" which is designed for harder plastic surfaces. Color Coat would work in my opinion with enough dry time I am sure, but Bumper Coater would be a slightly more appropriate choice for things like dashboards or, obviously, bumpers etc.

    If you are trying to change the color of a dark color to a lighter one, then to make the color "pop," first paint the vinyl white and then lay down the desired color. I do this with any dark color I wish to change to a lighter one.

    Great advice to gp slow! I've been painting plastic parts with vinyl because it looks amazing. But the vinyl has been chipping with repeated impacts. I thought it would be more durable because I had originally painted a piece where the vinyl bonded crazy good, without adhesion promoter! But I suppose different plastics will behave differently.

    It’s all in the prep work, I just repainted some donor seats for a 63 Mercury Comet, in high gloss black. Even with Matte Black it will be a bit glossy. You can scuff before hand or clean clean clean. Degrease it, use Soap, make sure it is dry. Use isopropyl alcohol 80 percent preferably or get a grease and wax remover. Make sure it’s dry.
    Then follow the instructions to this video. Prep work is everything. Follow instructions then you’ll be in the clear.

      Shop Tool Reviews I am pretty anal about prep work cause it’s so important, the seats sat out for theee longest time and had years of dirt on them. The foam was still good so I salvaged them. I spent a day cleaning them. Degreasing, soap water, sopping up the dirt and it kept coming back through the pores each time. I waited till I was satisfied, pretty much the best I’m gonna get all things considered. Did a final scuff next day I painted them up. Your video was very very helpful. Thank you!

    Does Dupli-Color make these vinyl/fabric paints in a wide assortment of colors? Several manufacturers make replacement headrests for the front seats that are fitted with DVD players for the back seat occupants. They all sell them in three standard colors; black/tan/gray. This looks like an excellent way to make them exact match the original OEM leather color, especially because the headrests are usually a low wear application. My Lincoln is a very light tan, almost white, called "Stone". Can Dupli-Color match it?

    Curious about what to do if you get fisheyes. Had some show up while testing on a piece of hard plastic, under dash trim. I’ve always thought it was some kind of contaminant but I’ve read it can actually come from the can as well?
    Also wondered about a 2 tone interior. If you have to tape off a section, will it possibly pull the paint? Assuming I waited until the first color was completely dry (a few days?)and using painters tape. TIA for any suggestions or answers.

    I have a 2011 xc 60 Volvo and my dog put teeth masks on leather steering wheel cover. Is there a way to perhaps use super glue to fill in teeth marks then light sand and spray it back to original ?

    This gives me hope for a project I want to undertake. It's a very large project. I have a King size 4 post bed with this type of leather on the headboard and matching bench. The bed itself is dark "wood" that is fake obviously, I think it's filled with a type of styrofoam..I intend to chalk paint that part, which I have researched to death. The leather is exactly the same as this you've shown...My issue is, it is black...and I want to paint it a light kind of sand color because I am going to antique white the bed itself. My question to you is, do you recommend a base coat of any kind since I will be going from black to a very light color? Or should I just put on as many light coats as it takes to get full coverage, even if that means 20 coats or more? Thank you so much for this video!!

      I'd recommend you do exactly as I showed. You just may have more coats. Very light coats to start with. Make sure you have it degreased really well. Many times, furniture gets years of furniture polish, pledge, and other substrates in the fabric/vinyl/leather, so be sure it's very clean. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I've got an office chair that had the normal peeling paint to make it look like black leather. I have taken all the peeling material off and now left with whatever material the manufacturer has used underneath. What processes do I need to do now to get the chair back to normal? Is the paint you use in this video what I need?

    I know this ain't plastic but if I'm correct on plastic is wax and grease remover, adhesion promoter, and base color correct? Oh yeah and before you even apply that wax and grease remover is washing also considered?

    No need for adhesion promoter? I ask because I did this same job on two leather seats and used the adhesion promoter that they recommended and the paint did not stick well. I cleaned the seats really well and now kinda lost hope with the process. Now that the seats have spots that the paint came off, can I just reclean and spray light coats over it again?

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No real need for adhesion promoter if it's thoroughly clean. That's a bummer that it came off. Be sure to clean really really well. Make sure you use some sort of grease & wax remover for the final clean. KleanStrip Prep-All works and you can get it on Amazon or most auto-parts stores. Thanks for watching.

    • @Shoptoolreviews

      For a felt or velvet type material, I would recommend using a liquid dye, like RIT. You can find it at Walmart or online. You just sponge it on with a damp sponge.

    I bought a rear roll up cargo cover my my Acura mdx. I have black leather interior. The cargo cover only comes in a grey color. All the other colors are discontinued. The roll up material is a vinyl. Will that be ok to paint it since it rolls up within itself when not used? Thank you very much!

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this should work great. I would just make sure to open it all the way up and clean it very well. Make sure it's totally dry before rolling it up. In fact, I'd probably let it dry in the sun for a day or more. Then, it should be fine to roll up. Thanks for watching.

    Great informative video. Quick question. Vinyl leather seats exposed to elements like summer sun, rain in fall & cold winter, does this work on those? I wanna paint my motorcycle seat. If wet does the paint stick to my pants if riding the bike? Thanks much.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you apply the paint correctly, with a very clean surface before painting and applying light coats, it should be fine. Just make sure that the paint is completely dry. I'd leave the seat in the sun for a few hours after painting. You shouldn't have any paint bleeding after that.

    What are your thoughts about adding a clear coat for sheen after? Any type of product you recommend or process to keep in mind?

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As long as the clear is a fabric type of paint, it should be fine. I would test it first, just to make sure it works with the base paint. Thanks for watching.

      Would you recommend this for an overpriced sectional that cost 3k that started to wear & scratched easily after the first year? If so, what about changing the color all together. Debating sectional cover as well. HATE looking at it & certainly can't sell it at a reasonable price in this condition - Ty

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your '67 GTO would be vinyl, not leather. Yes, this paint would work perfectly for this. In fact, we have '71 Olds 442 project car (cousin to your GTO), and we painted two of the bucket seats with this same process. Thanks for watching.
