One thing to consider with how the Redbrands are operating: they're closer to mafia than modern gangs or traditional bandits. Protection rackets are very much the calling card of that sort of organization, so it might be worth inferring a bit more structure than the book does directly. That said, the murder of the woodcarver is in direct contrast to that - lacking the discipline of those more serious organized crime groups.

just whent to Goteborg and back in a rental car from Denmark, listening to your podcasts (and other DnD podcasts as well) all the way. 2x6 hours of solid content. I am a very exp GM with 30 years of gaming, and I always try to make my game relevant to the players. That means that moral, value and personal dilemmas always weighs heavily, and also direct roleplay like conversations, interaction and relationship building. It needs to be balanced with combat though. In the end it take massive time to prepare, because all NPCs must be considered in detail, so they truly come to life and spark a feeling within the players. Your podcasts does just that. Amazing and I really feel inspired by the way you describe NPCs and the DnD world. Thanks you for this. I am your fan.!

Prepping a side-game of LMoP right now ( two of my regulars are having a baby, so the main campaign is ON HOLD) and the way I'm dealing with incorporating the Redbrands is that Gundar knows he'll need to either A) deal with them or B) have some muscle. The party is being hired to act like they're just escorting the goods, but are being brought to town as Gundar's support against the Redbrands. So in the set-up the party should already have the idea that maybe the Redbrands had something to do with the kidnapping.

This is a very strong hook and a smart Dungeon Master story link. Much better than the original adventure.

I'm meticulous about keeping track of provisions, arrows and other expendables.
    I also carefully track encumbrance.
We have weight limits and costs of these things for a reason. It is part of the game balance.
If encumbrance doesn't matter, then why would the PHB list the weight of every item you can buy? Why is there a max carrying capacity based on STR score?
If there is no chance of running out of arrows then why do they come in packs of 20 instead of ever-full quivers?

Do it how you want. I don't worry about it that much.

D&D is a system that caters to several different styles, it all depends what the focus is. A narrative focused DM often allows plot points to dominate, while a dungeon crawler DM is going to go much more by the rules. Tracking of provisions, expendables, and encumbrance is the realm of the simulationist. The system is designed to cater to all of these approaches.
Honestly, there's very few situations where game balance would be horrendously changed by accounting for encumberance or not, Who cares if the paladin is carrying 50 greatswords, he can still only swing one at a time. The only place where it really makes a difference is with characters with low strength having plate mail, and there's a specific rule in the armour section for that.
Ammo and food/water supplies have a bit more of an issue in endurance situations. Crossing a desert or lost in the Underdark, you're going to have to worry about that, but a small group foraging on the road in a fertile area is pretty reasonable.

@@rashkavar one could also consider the group stumbling upon a decanter of endless water (magic item) at some point of their campaign, if at some other point they will have to cross a desert.
A bag of holding could resolve the problem of weight carried and keeping track of this.
I know that magic items are supposed to be rarely found, so it could be found just around the time the players level up to lvl 5, and should finish the LMoP adventure.
It could maybe be a reward from Gundren to the paty?

Ironic that you mention that: the reason I mentioned the idea of crossing a desert is because I'm playing in a campaign that bears some geographical resemblance to North Africa: fairly fertile savanna south of a big F-off desert in the north.
In the 10 months since I posted that, our party has not only acquired a more tame variant of the decanter of endless water (it's always full of water, but doesn't do the geyser thing the official Decanter can do), but has also acquired an alcohol version that produces whatever alcoholic beverage was last poured in it.
We've also had a bag of holding for quite some time, and we also have a cleric who can make food and water appear in containers with a 3rd level spell (which, at our level, is not a huge problem)
