I played Klarg as a leader that wasn't down for what his king was having him do to people. Yeemik saw him as weak for his great love of raising animals and wanted to depose him. He is now a beastmaster ranger NPC in one of my campaigns. The main reason the party didn't outright kill him was his selfless nature towards the wolf and cub he'd been shielding from the fight.

The Adventure Zone's version of Klarg is ICONIC. If you fancy a chuckle look it up

In my campaign, Klarg was the prince of the Cragmaw Kingdom, and the son of King Grol. Klarg wanted to prove his worth to his father by conquering Phandalin and making a name for himself as the "Scourge of the Triboar Trail," so he replaced Duke Yeemik (yes, I gave all of the named goblins titles) as the ruler of the Cragmaw Hideout, which Yeemik wasn't very happy about.

Favorite quote from DMs that run this. Half the party is unconscious or dead and we hear ''Oh shit. I guess Klaarg is supposed to run after you down Ripper." Cracks me up every time

My player's halfling bard managed to get a charm person off on him. Combat over. They are now buddies. He wanted to show the halfling his horde. They went to negotiate over the prisoner (Klarg wanted to trade for the dragon born monk, he looked like good eating.) and the goblins chose this time to try a mutiny. Klarg crits the ring leader and liquidates his skull. sigh...

I always found it odd that Gundren had so very little text devoted to him than nearly all the rest of the villains and NPCs.

      I agree.

Party essentially went straight from Goblin arrows to kill the 3 wolves to Klarg... got their behinds whipped and ran. (2 down PCs dragged down the narrow rock slide leading to Klarg's area)
One PC did try to feed and befriend the wolves, but another decided to just skewer them.
I was going to let them use the wolves against the goblins that had been mistreating the poor creatures. I described the wolves as emaciated and looking to be poorly treated. It appeared occasionally someone/thing had splashed water into shallow depressions in the floor and signs of scrap boned well chewed in the area. Some rotted meat out of the wolves' reach...
To reward the PC / player for coming up with dumping everyone down the slide, I had Klarg just laugh at them as they ran away.(and keep the PCs alive) And said Klarg didn't fit in the narrow passage.

Our party had a similar experience, they fed the wolves, and then the paladin was first up the chimney. He failed his stealth check and basically fell in to Klarg's chamber, had to face off against Klarg, Ripper and the goblins alone while his allies scrambled up the fissure. The rogue and fighter arrived fairly quickly to support him, while the sorcerer got stuck in the fissure, blocking the path for the cleric behind her.
Above, the fighter, rogue and paladin were quickly outmatched by Klarg and his allies. They took down Ripper, but the paladin and fighter both fell (the former captured and the latter murdered by Klarg), leading the rogue to leap back down the shaft to escape.
The surviving three beat an ignominious retreat.

Klargs speech pattern could work with Fallouts super mutants

Klarg could also be total heel wrestler, or if Mr. T was an evil bugbear.
My DM gave him the barbarian's rage and reckless attack. Could be a good idea for a DM seeking to make Klarg much tougher if they're running the adventure for more than four or five players and/or letting the players create their own characters rather than use the pre-made ones included.

I plan into giving him these abilities if he ends up fleeing. My plan is to have him flee and attack the party later in the campaign. Having him become an ongoing villain.

First time DM running this for first time players. Klarg was warned ahead but his ambush failed (rolled terribly) They went after Ripper right away and killed it, so I had Klarg scoop up the wolf’s corpse and run off in the second round. They finished off the rest of the goblins in the room, and haven’t found Sildar yet. But I’m trying to decide what to do with Klarg now. It says he flees the cave- so where should he go? Would he head to Cragmaw castle, or try to find more goblins to join him and set another ambush for revenge?

I thought about this as wel, let him show up in the redbrands hideout, make sure he can flee again and then let him show up somewhere else. The party Will get attached tot his sillyness and IT wil be a fun easter egg to Every place to get a good chuckle.
Maybe give him a new pet everytime, like a moose or a killer Duck or something silly
