My version of Sildar was a bit younger. After being captured and tortured by the goblins, he was very brooding but still continued with his mission for the Lords Alliance using the party as his Muscle to get Gundren back. He was also in a relationship with Sister Gareale, who frowned on him putting his life in danger. At the Battle of Phandalin, his sense of Honor compelled him to join the fight against the Red Brands.

I've ran LMoP close to 20 times for new players, always making tweaks and changes. My most consistent reason for Sildar being in the adventure and going with Gundren is Iarno (Glassstaff) who is also a member of the LA. This game I'm doing right now for some co-workers, Sildar, Gundren, and Iarno were a party of adventurers at one point. Even saving one of the party members in their backstory because his people were seen as vermin. So the party knows Gundren fondly and some even know Sildar and the others. Which will make the Redbrands interesting to say the least.

I had him healed by a companion healer, and gave him a short sword from a fallen goblin. Through some incredible rolls, a high charisma Rogue managed to free him by having the entire goblin detail believe a whopper of a story so they left the cave where he was kept captive.
Thanks for the video! I'm an absolute newb and our DM is new aswell. We got Sildar killed last night and I'm just glad to hear it won't ruin the entire campaign. I know you said not to watch if I'm a player so I only watched till 9:20. That way no spoilers. I feel much better now 🤣😂

My sildar has joined the party with droop. Since my group still didn’t trust him by himself. On there way to Conberry they were attacked at night by a owlbear and when I rolled to see which unlucky sleeping bag would get attacked sildar drew the short straw and immediately got clawed and mauled taking 32 damage. His horrified screams woke up the party. Btw he survived lol

I had my players start from neverwinter. And had them camp twice b4 they leave. Had sildar tell them the watch schedule something my players would not hVe thought of and rolled random encounter but they faced a pack of wolves during the night. GR almost died. They liked the encounter and learned to do a watch. No body died and they trust eachother more

Sildar met Gundren in Neverwinter while he was investigating the disappearance of his old war buddy, Iarno Albrek. Iarno was dispatched to Neverwinter as a liaison to the settlers beginning to take root in nearby Phandalin. Iarno succumbed to the seductive wiles of Halia Thornton, however, and the Zhentarim. Turns out Iarno has been feeling his years of late. He feels he earned more in the wars than the Lord's Alliance rewarded him. Halia has played no small part in amplifying these childish caprices. Regardless, Iarno is madly in love with Halia and has decided that in his twilight, NOTHING will do but to have whatever she wants and promises (no paltry portion, mind you. Have you seen Halia? Whew! What's an old man to do?).
Why so much drama, you ask? Because like you, I want a hook with which to stretch LMoP's plot through at least a few more levels.
When the adventurers confront the Black Spider and ultimately defeat him, they will probably succumb to their own weaknesses for coin and glory, returning him to Phandalin for trial rather than dispatching him outright. Consequently, when Halia shows to break Nezznar out of jail, she seems surprised to find Iarno there as well. With Nezznar and Iarno together (ever dated 2 girls and ran into them both at the bar? Awkward...), Halia all but ignores "Glasstaff" and plays the role of concubine to the Black Spider.
Iarno pouts all the way to Neverwinter where he and Nezznar get busy rallying Zhentarim troops planning a swift retribution to the heroes of Wave Echo Cave.
However, old friend Sildar has been humiliated by his old friend Iarno for the last time.
The Lords Alliance rewards Sildar for his heroism with a "severance package" of sorts, supporting his request to retire to Phandalin as the official Townmaster and unofficial L.A. consultant. Harbin Wester could not be more pleased! The Redbrands had siphoned him empty of political ambition. As Sildar's first order of business, he appoints Harbin Wester Secretary of Treasury, solicits the adventurers for help delivering real justice to Black Spider and Glasstaff, and begins investigating the prison break... tracking his old friend, Iarno to Neverwinter.
Having grown exponentially more confident in their heroes and in themselves over the last few eventful weeks (The Redbrands have been run out of town, the local trade routes have been cleaned up and fortified, family and friends have been saved and avenged, and several settlement heroes have been returned from certain doom for Dumathoin's sake!), it's not long at all before locals are all but lined up to report having seen Halia Thornton uncharacteristically exploratory around town of late. She's even been witnessed uncharacteristically overdressed and burdened (with tools and extra cloaks, perhaps?) on her way toward the jail at suspicious hours. "I'd recognize that ass if she were wearing an ankle-length fur cloak," reports Carp Alderleaf. (Snitches.)
The adventurers don't hesitate to "investigate," and suddenly Mirna Dendrar - the recently rescued widow - is the new Chief Executive of the Phandalin Miner's Exchange. Halia Thornton put up a helluva fight. She was one tough succubus.
Iarno inadvertently gives away the Black Spider's location when he offs himself in the streets of Neverwinter. Authorities cooperate with the new Townmaster of Phandalin and show him Iarno's suicide note... partly because it's addressed: "Sildar Hallwinter, my friend." Glasstaff died apologetic, evidently, if completely psychotic. Poor ol' bastard.
The extra heat (from the Neverwinter fuzz, not from the sun) dampens Zhentarim momentum, and Nezzy is about to break for the Underdark when the adventurers - this time supported by a rather impressive Lords Alliance force spurned by wounded egos and something to prove - catch up to the foiled and fleeing Zhentarim just NE of Neverwinter at the southern spur of the Crags.
Dass yo ASS, Mr. Postman!
Campaign Conclusion? Or do we chase ol' Nezzy into the Underdark?
But wait!

All that to say this: No way in 9 Hells Yeemik is killing Sildar Hallwinter. I'll TPK those disposable adventurers in a bonus action before I let them waste my story! If they can't keep Sildar alive, they don't deserve my imagination!!!

I always found it odd that goblins were able to ambush Sildar and Gundren. And that the module doesn't make him more insistent on finding Gundren. He just plops off to the Town Hall and thats it. I always thought he would want to help find Gundren out of his sense of guilt on failing to protect Gundren. Thanks for the video to help flesh out Sildar!

I have this new starter set and I'm in the process of building a large portion of the terrain. I have the Cragmaw hideout done and the first encounter. Im going to post up some pics on the FB group in a bit.

Just waiting on the approval for the group and I have to work. I'll begin posting pics as soon as I get home. I'll start with my oldest mini's from 1974 maybe.
Me and my players are newer so stuff takes a while. I'd prepared for some Yeemik/Sildar interaction but my party saw the amount of goblins and decided to explore the rest of the cave leaving the sounds of a suffering human and cackling goblins behind. They fought an epic battle against Klarg with 2 near death experiences, and unfortunately for me Klarg didn't escape in the end. Pesky fighter chased him down the chute and Klarg missed. They promptly took a long rest.... Now I'm left to determine the fate of Sildar with an extra 8 hours left in goblin captivity. I am going to have the people keeping watch notice some goblins during the night but they scurry off to inform Yeemik and don't attack. They have not tried talking to anyone yet even when I gave Klarg quite the personality, so I need to orchestrate at least some conversation between them and Yeemik.

Im about to DM LMoP for the first time, after my initial read of the booklet I can't really see a way that Sildar doesnt die in Ctagmaw hideout.
It's difficult for a group to save Sildar, but it is possible with good luck and a solid plan.
The group I am running had a little bit of each-- a couple of solid archers and they were able to sneak in and snipe the two goblins (Yeemick and a second one that I placed up there) on the upper level with Sildar. From there it was just a matter of them mopping up the other 4 on the lower level.
My players rolled really high on persuasion rolls and got Yemick to hand over Sildar and his loyal goblinsto help them kill Klarg. Once they finished killing Klarg, they killed Yemick too... I know I went too easy on them and gave them way too much. Lesson learned...
My sildar got a replacement sword from Phandalin. But his *family crest* Greatsword is in the castle. So he isn’t useless if they tell him to be in the front. I agree he is better in the back where it is safer but i left his fate to the players

So my players arrived in phandekin and immediately went to the sleeping giant. They beat the ruffians and wanted to enter the tavern. The problem is, there isn’t any description for the tavern. What do I do?

The Tavern would be anything you want, as long as it's full of redbrand thugs.
I put 12 Redbrands and a doppelganger as the barkeep. The 2 players who actually went in, turned around and walked out saying sorry wrong bar lol

It is a throwaway line that the tavern owner is Grista. A dwarf female.
Up to you how the tavern is laid out. It’s not important enough unless you make it so. My version of the module has alt Redbrands. 1 being a Redbrand variant that is a tavern brawler, the brawler congregate mainly at the tavern.
The phandalin map also has a smithy next to Barthen. The smithy has no description or NPC, and the “blacksmith” functionality is handled by Linene, who sells arms and armor
