So refreshing to see someone with a 79 not claiming that every engine mod is essential. I have had mine stock for 4 years and no dramas. Though mine certainly has worked as hard as yours.
Exactly all the self proclaimed experts that think they know better than Toyota are just making their rigs unreliable with catch cans, pre fuel filters, gvm ‘upgrades’ etc etc
@@calamarininjabeast5866it’s all marketing gimmicks to sell their products.
Unless you do extreme overlanding (ex.CSR,Simpson dessert, tele track) there’s no need to modify and upgrade. Toyota will be fine.
So much shit you do not need mate, cheers.
still waiting on my 75 or 80 series to die so have a excuse to buy a 79 series. both have stock engines not the best on fuel economy but they just keep going just under 1mill kms between the 2 of them.
Thank you mate.......atleast we still have people like you that really use this cars for their intended purposes.❤❤❤❤
Thank you mate, glad you enjoyed it.
I enjoyed your honest options mate. Simple and reliable. Keep up the great content.
Cheers
Thank you mate, much appreciated. Take it easy 🤝
Awesome video mate! Great to see you using the vehicle for what it was designed for and not just a show pony with thousands of unnecessary accessories.
I also have never run catch cans and pre - filters or had tunes on my toyota's.
Your air intake tract will be full of greasy sooty shit then
Thanks mate, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Howdy, at 5.50 min, tip for putting cover on is how I do it as well, makes sense to locate the top cover. Ive got 275,000km and no issues with dust.
For the clutch, no worries up to 250000km either, but did go HD clutch and newer gearbox, as my bus is a keeper.
Good to see real world bush driving experience not product placement.
Top work bruz.
That's good to hear mate, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🤝🍻
On my 79 I chose to fit the Terrain Tamer air cleaner box strengthening support. The story was they thought the box was flexing and letting dust in. So far so good, and I use both Terrain Tamer and genuine filters. No dust at all when going to Cape York and back.
Well that's bloody interesting mate, good to know. Cheers
Good vid
I’ve got exactly the same model cruiser and I’ve just completed a 16,000 km outback trip with about 8000 k’s of dust. What I did was remove the snorkel and silicon and it to the car and silicon where it joins in the middle, so that all of the air entering the snorkel has to come through the pre-cleaner, the second thing I did was install a Terrain tamer airbox spacer, and so far I have incurred zero dust passed the element so far
During that trip the element needed to be replaced once as it was badly contaminated.
I am using genuine Toyota air filters
Keep up the good work with the videos.
That's very interesting mate, I wish they came with a one piece actual snorkel, that Pre cleaner up top would work to its full potential, but yes great idea. Thank you, that's really good to know. Gets me thinking 🤔
Thankyou again for sharing your considerable experience and in particular demonstrating the correct way to fit the air filter lid. I've serviced my own Landcruisers for almost 40 years and always had a small amount of fine dust get past the filter. My VDJ78 has done 80,000km and has not had any significant dust get past the filter (but has done less dirt roads than yours). Too many people ditch the factory snorkel without realising the cap is a dust spinner.
No worries mate, thanks for watching, yep, the Pre cleaner up top is a good thing from factory.
Yours is a real Farm truck and a perfect test case for the 79 series.
Definitely mate 👌
Unifilter solved the dusting issue for me, I just replace the foam panels every 10k instead of washing them and give the MAF sensor a squirt with MAF cleaner. Then replace the whole unit about every 50k. Huge big chunky seal on the Unifilter and I haven't had any dust at all on the clean side of the airbox. I've been waiting for the new Donaldson set up as well, the type of filter they are using in the 200 series setup works extremely well in earthmoving equipment that is mainly stationary in aweful dusty conditions.
Great to see someone racking up the klm's on a facelift model 👍
That's the go mate, and good to know, i definitely need to try something else. Cheers
@@OutbackOffroadNT second the Unifilter
Great montage. In the UK I can categorically say that dust will never be an issue for me.
Thanks, yeah, I reckon you'll be right mate 😂🤠
But water intake would be still 😂
The old 1HZ Airbox is Perfect without any Problems
Bloody bollards!! Great review cobber 👍
Hey mate awesome video, so nice up the way, love the Coldplay music in it, it goes so well with the landscape
G'day! Thank you, im bloody stoked you enjoyed it
I have fitted a Terrain Tamer ,it is a kit, bracket which reinforces the box so it does not warp in warmer climates.I also used a bowel pre-cleaner on my Safari Snorkel when on trips out your way ...........Tanimi.😁
Yeah a pre cleaner up top is the way to go, the factory one is good I reckon, I just wish they ran a factory one piece snorkel.
The guard design is a non issue, its done that way on the 150s, 200s and 300s, they just have a plastic cover over yhe the gap, good vid
70K kms. It's not even broken in yet. 😁 There's a reason 70 Series LandCruisers are very popular in the outback. And it's not because of their luxury appointments and comfort. It's good to see a ute being used for what it was designed for. 👍
She's still fresh as a daisy 😂
Great episode the last 8min is bloody epic, bloody epic.
Thanks mate! Legend 🍻
Thanks for sharing Brother.
That dust getting though is interesting hey.
Keen to keep an eye on ours going forward.
Good little tip on reinstating the lid. 👌. Didn’t know that.
That 7 minutes footage is Epic hey.
You video editing skills are Epic.
Great Rig. Great Bloke. Great Videos
Cheers
Brad & Fi 🤙
Than you brother! Ya big legend 🙌
Really glad you enjoyed it, and its always good if someone gets something useful out of an episode. Rock on 🤘
Any updates on the new filter?
The vids just keep getting better 👍 Look into the Water Watch pre-filter. They make a lot more sense than the std fuel manager pre-filters. Water in fuel is the no.1 enemy, detecting it early is what the Water Watch does best.
Thank you mate, yeah I ran a fuel manager set up on my previous cruiser, I may run a secondary filter one day. Water watch would be good.
Great Honest review on a vehicle designed to be used as a work horse. Not a show pony that someone spent another $100k on modifications. Love the scenery and drone footage out there.
Good on ya mate thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed! Its a proper work horse 🐎
Bloody legend. 70k in only 9 months 90% in dirt and harsh bush. Fuck the rest of hero TH-camrs. you are my man. I am only 1400km after 6 weeks. Long live the king (70 V8)
Hey look out! 🤣 cheers mate. Yeah she cops a floggin that's for sure.
Really good advice on the airbox mate I’ll use that. Also interested in this new filter you’re talking about too. As for the dents and scratches I wouldn’t be to concerned as you’re using your rig for it’s intended purpose👍My 2024 79 has 1500km on the clock and I’ve already torn a mirror off it on a tree in a tight track plus scratches down both sides and bent the passenger side tail light bracket hitting a steep track haha! Besides all that Regan, your confidence on camera now is top notch and it shows. Well done mate 👍👍
@@dustyfarmer lol, if I start saving now my grandchildren might get one.

@@dustyfarmer Is it ? Let’s give a shot at least for this year. If nothing happens then I believe you. If they introduce, then thank Perth diesel performance 😃
No worries at all mate, bloody legend, thank you very much. Yeah I'm not to worried about the battle scars, gives her some character haha. Ooh already busting up your rig hey! Thanks again mate.
Excellent video. Ive justvretired from the auction industry after 37 years. Ive had 40,60,80,100,200,300 75, 78, 79x5 v8s. Hated the 300 btw. Sold my 2020 79 dual cab because the clutch let go (nil hard work) and toyota wouldnt admit failure/issues from 5000km. Never had one do that before.
I still do Valuation work for mining and in Newman all the v8 79s are fitted with an aftermarket airbox as the std toyota filter distorts slightly allowing that distortion you see.
In 2022 a major mining client advised me they wanted the 2.8/auto instead of the v8. Also improved safety for pedestrians.
Hey presto here we are with the 2.8 and a wobbly bonnet and softer upper guards for that safety.
What i did was kept the fj45 sold the 300 and 79 and bought a hilux to see if i can live with the 2.8 etc. yes I can. So a new 79 will be bought in 2025 once any issues are sorted
Nice read mate, very interesting appreciate the comment. I wonder what air box and filter they run...
What did you like more 100 or 200?
Why didn’t you like about the 300?
Awesome vid ! Got the 2.8 cause I’m lazy on manual😂 but I’m totally love it . And my Mrs can drive when doing long distance too . Happy wife happy day
Cheers mate, beauty, that's awesome
That spear horn clean skin at the trough gave me an adrenaline surge I think flashed back back 30 years to my horse back ringing days as the last white boys to work cattle on some of the old peninsula and Gulf runs before they got handed back to national parks & indigenous. RIP my brothers our dogs & horses that never got to get old enough to enjoy the soft life.
Great video of a cruiser doing what is was meant to.
Is there any maintenance meant to happen on that dust spinny raised air intake thing?
Thanks mate, great yarn. No that Pre cleaner isn't a bowl type, it's a good thing I just wish they ran a proper one piece factory snorkel so that all the air passes through that Pre cleaner.
I run grease all around my rubber seal on filter on my 79. N seems to work a treat 145000km in no dramas stock filters housing.. bro in law gave the tip he worked in the mine s on all the trucks 70.s to big dogs. N mechanic by trade.. nothing is full proof but little things to add helps
How'd he reckon the 70's went in the mines mate?
@@OutbackOffroadNT the.mines.make.the votes what we get if it works there then it works for us
Mate I put in a Terrain Tamer spacer for the airbox lid. Completely fix the dust in the lid issue. Before I did it, inside my lid looked like yours, I could wipe my finger across the inlet hole and get fine dust come off like you did in the vid. Not anymore, completely gone and I still use the same factory (or aftermarket what ever is on hand) filter elements - I haven't noticed a difference between Toyota genuine or Ryco or other brands after I put the spacer in. It's a simple piece of stainless that stops dirty air bypassing the side of the filter element and getting into the clean side. My opinion is that the airbox lid is poorly designed.
Before I did the spacer, I was running a dual pannel oiled foam filter element from Unifilter. I got the shits with having to deal with oily muck and wash filters ect. but it didn't let any dust through.
G'day mate, thanks for watching and leaving such a detailed comment, that's very bloody interesting I might have to give that a go myself, no harm in trying I suppose.
Best way to check if your getting dust in is do oil sampling, if you have high amounts of silica then it's getting dust through.
Possibly look at going a k&n filter. That's what all the off-road racers use as they let the least amount of dust through and keep performing even when covered in dust unlike all other types like papper and foam (look up david vizards video on it also explains why they don't do good on cheap filter tests needs the pulse the engine to work correctly)
Keep up the good work
I will do an oil sample one day out of curiosity. I service every 5000km, definitely the way to go with any machine being used like mine is. Thank you mate much appreciated 👍🍻
Great content, I have a LC200 series I fitted a Donaldson PowerCore so far I am happy with. Fitting the factory element correctly is important as well as don't over stretch the element replacement. In my opinion, if the element is very dirty the turbo drags air past the element seal and the element housing. Contact Donaldson I believe they are working on an element for the 79. I am in no way affiliated with Donaldson. P.S. I don't mind the look of your office ,I was out your way last winter and I loved it.
I hear there will be a Donaldson set up for the 70 very soon, so I'm waiting to have a look at that. Yeah she's bloody nice out here mate, not a bad office at all. Thanks mate 😂🤝
Cool video mate, mine is a bit of a highway queen lol. I did buy it to pull my boat mainly and does it with ease after the tune…
Mall crawler haha, nah that's cool mate, good rig to drag the boat behind, that's awesome 👌
awesome 79, no need to do engine mods, these Cruisers get the job done
That's it mate, I'm happy for now.
Noice bro rool noice!
Great review 👍👍
Thanks! 👍
Thanks for this video, a problem that I thought was known. One would think they would have fixed this potential issue.
Is this filter the same one as used in the Prado's?
Must admit I also worry about this issue
Yeah it's definitely not a good thing to see. I'm unsure of the prado filter mate. Cheers 👌
Hey mate
I like your videos their interesting, different and educational. And you're doing your own thing being real and honest which is rare in you tube. Please keep it up.
Two Questions for you...
1. What's your preferred psi for long drives on corrugation for comfort?
2. Your diffs... I see you do lots of creek crossings and I assume since you have no engine mods you wouldn't have diff breathers? My question is now you've done 70 thousand ks have you checked your diff oils? How is it? What's your opinion, do you need diff breathers?
Thankyou 😊
Johnny Gray.
Thank you I really appreciate that mate!
1. Right now, with these tyres and this suspension set up, with what I weigh, I'm running, 22 psi front, and 25 psi rear, no dramas at all. However, a good place to start and what I'd recommend, is between 25 and 30 psi.
2. My bearings and diff oils have been changed out a couple times now, and in regards to breathers, I will extend them if I'm going to any really deep water crossings in the future. Cheers
Rigs lookin sick mate. If you decide to tune it down the road look into getting your egr turned off and blanked. In these models it’s possible to do without having to delete the dpf also
Cheers mate.
Its never been the box... its always been the filter.
I hear Donaldson is going to introduce their own Airbox as is for 200 series for 70 series later this year (2024).
Yeah I'm hearing the same mate, I'll probably go that route I suppose.
This is a good commercial for Toyota.
I'm employed to look after their marketing now 😂
No filter media is 100% efficient. That non-woven media is not particularly efficient. Dusting is often incorrectly attributed to the seal.
Yeah that's it mate 👍
Toyota have had filter media problems for a long time since going to the V8 air box. Even the 1KD prado media was crap. I lodged a complaint with Toyota and gave them a failed sample, but of course no response was given.
Donaldson - send this guy the new 79 series airbox your working on.
Will be worth it in advertising and "R&D" for you.
Yeah DONALDSON, what he said ⬆️🤣
🤣
Some how I don’t think you would be interested in the 2.8 4 cylinder 79
Okay?
Toyota will say dust ingress is "within Specifications"
😂 I'll find out soon and report back!
@@OutbackOffroadNT be interested to hear what they have to say 🤔
Grease ya seals also mate!
Sorry mate but I have been in the 4x4 industry for a long time and the airbox is the problem. See it time and time again on the 200s also. Toyota won't admit it's a problem.
Its a funny thing mate, I've never had dramas with the air box, others say they do, some say they don't. Some say the filter let's some dust through, others say it doesn't. Then, If you ask Berrima diesel they'll tell you there is absolutely nothing wrong with the air box or factory filter 🤷♂️ bloody strange.
@@OutbackOffroadNT a new motor from Toyota is $40,000++
A new airbox is $800+
It's not something I would gamble with.
get a tune, ur missing out. good vid ur channel will grow
Cheers mate 🤝
Look it's just me but it is still unacceptable for any dust to be going through the filter.. yes a lot of people do pinch the seal and that's poor form from qualified mechanics. BUT I would 1 see if you could make the Donaldson 200s power core work with new custom brackets.. or buy once and cry one on a GSL fab air box.
Apparently the Donaldson set up will be available for the 70 soon.
@@OutbackOffroadNT kinda upsetting for a company like Donaldson took so long to come out with these air boxes. Considering it's been a problem since 2008..
Yeah I bloody wish there was something bought to market a lot sooner.
Unfilter, pre oiled and much thicker than the junk toyota filter. Stopped my dusting completely.
That's the go mate, but I'll never run an oiled filter.
Typical land cruiser are box all the same 45,47,75,79 ,all the wagons. None keep dust out
Interesting, but like I said, box seems fine I think. Air filter seems like it isn't very efficient.
Air CHEAP filter boxes FLEX and do let dust thru as a result COMBINED WITH the airfilter BEING TO SMALL .
Proof is cheap chinese agricultural machines suffer from this in very dusty environments which is 99% usage .
Micro dust most definitely wears engines.
If not using a donaldson airfilter oil change every 5000km
I do service every 5000km. Definitely the way to go.
Such an overrated car ...
In what way you reckon? Thanks for watching mate. 🤝
@@OutbackOffroadNTclutch and airbox?
Fair enough, yeah the clutch is a weird one I reckon, some folks have no dramas at all, others like myself replace it. Air box is fine as far as I can tell, the air filter seems to be not as efficient as it could be. Other than that, bulletproof work horse for me.
Yeah right, were you not watching the video. Not many vehicles could handle this day in day out abuse.
@@ZaZa-ra OH FFS get off the Toyota tit
Buy a $30 Nulon oil test kit, use it and send it off to them for testing. They tell you if theres any dust in your engine oil and if the engine wear is normal for the km or not?
