I've gone ahead now and put the terrain tamer gasket on mine. It's similar to what you are doing there, but stainless steel with gasket maker rather than foam. The stainless also has the advantage of making the surface a little wider for the filter to sit on as well as preventing the airbox shape from deforming over corrugations and under suction, especially when hot. It's about $90 delivered but comes with an air filter, so it's actually pretty cheap and only takes 10 minutes to fit.
Hey mate. Great video. Agree with most things. One minor detail is that the foam increases the compression not tension. The tension is increased on the clamps.
I love the cyclonic heads, though they do provide an addtional restriction (in comparison to a ram head) so there will be addtional vaccuum on the clean side of the filter, putting added strain on the seal.
Some good points there. I guess it's all a compromise in the end. From visual inspections, I'm so far impressed with the current setup. Be interesting to see if anyone has achieved different results from a standard RAM head. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Nathan.

@@XploringOz Huge difference, I was running one on my BOBCAT S150 skid steer & I would easily empty a cup full of dust a day & the paper filters were still clean. I run a Safari ARMAX ram air head & it sucks the dust & bugs that get onto the dirty side of the element, mine last a maximum of 20K before replacement with dust offs every 5K.
Theoretically this would would well, however the O-ring would have to be made for purpose and fit perfectly otherwise you would risk letting dust past. Cheers, Nathan.
Nice video. The factory airbox has a dust spinner built into it just where the snorkel hooks up to the airbox. It spins dust into a catch can that can be cleaned from inside. But Safari in their wisdom chop that out when you fit an Armax snorkel. The previous safari snorkel is better when it comes to dust.
Thanks Phil, I did notice this spinner, but have also noted that it has been removed during the installation of the ARMAX snorkel. Hopefully my Donaldson pre-cleaner will do this job for me. Thanks, Nathan.
@@blackpearlpastoral No but the vehicle had less than 9000km on it so prevention is better than cure. Just completed 12000km trip up into the Kimberley travelling on a quite a few kms off the seal - no sign of dust egress to date. I have also just put a Terrain Tamer metal frame in the airbox lid as well! See if that as any positive a=effect over time?
What size of tape did you use. I have a tape that is 6mm wide and 3mm thick. Would the 3mm thickness help create a better seal or should I try and get a thicker tape. Thanks
Gday mate is there anything you can do to determine if a car has been dusted, I’m in the market to buy a second hand 200 and very wary of this problem and the potential cost to replace engine. Or are we just rolling the dice and hoping the car we buy doesn’t or hasn’t suffer from this problem thanks for any advice.
Nathan, Would it be better to apply the seal on the top side of the air filter. I understand the dust gets around that top seal, no benefit fitting seal around the underside of the air filter.
You could, however I don't think it's the surface type of the material itself, more so the pressure between the two halves of the box. If you add an aftermarket seal on top, it has to be perfect without a single defect otherwise air will find it's way past. If you add it below, it will increase the tension on the sealing edge (by simply making it thicker) and where there will be a likely defect (at the join of the aftermarket seal) air will only get sucked into the lower side to then be filtered by the factory filter. I hope my logic makes some sort of sense. Cheers, Nathan.
I think the filter on the old 1hz was designed better. It was cylindrical and had a cyclone separation effect on dust, forcing solids away from fines. The problem with 1vd is that square shape won't filter evenly l an next stop is your engine!
For sure, cylindrical filters would theoretically have better filtration. This is another reason I run the Donaldson Cylinder Pre-filter on the top of the snorkel. This helps seperate heaps of the course material from the ultra fine dust, preventing unnecessary build up in the filter box.
Does the 200 series Sahara have one or two air conditioning compressors? Mine is only working on drivers side intermittently and strangely when I went over a bump it worked fully again for a short time on drivers side as well. I live remote in Arnhem Land and no mechanic has got to the bottom of it despite charging me money it still plays up?
Hey mate, yes there are two condensers in the cruiser. One up front and one in the rear passenger quarter panel. As far as I know though they control the front and back temps, no side to side. So not quite sure what is going on with that issue you're experiencing.
Cheers mate, all the best for your vehicle! Can't be too careful. Also, might be interested to check out my video on the Unifilter, to be honest this did seem to have a better result than these mods. Cheers, Nathan.
I have a K & N performance filter, with a smear of petroleum jelly around the lip as it sits in the air box, cheapest way to keep fine dust out. I will also add, getting a pre-filter for your snorkel if youre going to do a lot of dirt roads, im sure theres a heap out there, i got mine from unifilter ( uniflow ) for my TJM airtec ram head. The amount of shit they catch is unreal.
Great stuff. Glad you found a fix for it. Seems everyone has their own little fix for it. It's a bit disappointing that we have to find our own fixes in the first place, but as long as dust isn't getting through, happy days. Cheers for watching, Nathan.

Great video thanks I'm searching for the Moroday Multi-seal tape. Bunnings appear not to stock it. Where did you find yours? Is there a similar product? cheers
Hey mate, unfortunately I can't comment on this. I don't have any experience with the pickups and not sure what system they run. I can't say that I'm aware of the same parts running in other vehicles. Cheers, Nathan.
Could work, potentially a little costly, but I guess it would depend on how you plan on using the vehicle. The Donaldson cyclonic pre-filter I'm using helps to seperate the larger dirt particles before entering the air box.
Another good video. I guess if doing your method, it is essential to make sure the new foam seal has good integrity where it butt joins (ie the two cut ends). Any small gap would likely introduce a bigger breach than the original. Would it be worth tapering the join of the foam rather than square profile? Or do you find the compression of the foam adequately ensures there is no gap at the join? Anyway, great job again...appreciate your effort in putting these together.
For sure, you want to make sure the foam seals up nicely. This is another reason I've put het foam on the underside of the box. If for whatever reason there were to be a small gap, being on the lower side, it would just promote air being sucked into the dirty side of the box. Leaving the factory seal against the top of the airbox means that you have that consistent and flat seal around the entire box.
Doing very regular oil changes in dusty conditions is imperative IMO ..!! Did an oil change on a friend's ex miner cruiser and the filter was full of dirt, Ugly it was
It's hard to tell here in Australia. It's not something that is often reported, but there are so few petrol variants its hard to know whether it's not an issue, or just not common here...
Rubber seal is on the wrong side, have a look at where it gets in, seal should be on the top seal. The dust gets in thorough the lid of you look at all affected airboxes.
Whether the seal is on the top or the bottom, the idea is the increase the compression of the seal, which this does. Further the reason I mount this on the bottom is, if for whatever reason there is a flaw in the seal, or a small gap where the seal starts/ends then the air will be sucked into the lower box, allowing it to be filtered prior to entering the intake. If there is a flaw in a top seal, this will allow air to be sucked directly into the clean side of the box and potentially make this problem much worse. Each to their own, but this works for me. Cheers, Nathan.
@@XploringOz yes....but ...if you want to stop all dust top seal is the go, that way you are not just relying on the notoriously poor dust seal from the filter alone. All the dust I had was from through the top seal, in putting the seal on the lid you have a better chance of keeping the dust out. Look at what Project200 did and see how poor the filter seals are.
SOS..same old story. Seal problem!!! Not Filter problem Your video is spot on, no doubt showing Toyota’s problem since years. Toyota has made over the years a minor improvement on the seal height. But it is in my opinion not enough. The seal design to improve would not be rocket sciences!! And would cost in production a few dollars more and every customer happy, but not Toyota and their dealer ship!!!! Commercial interest in selling expensive spare parts or engines. That is my opinion. Can’t be so difficult to design a seal with 2 higher lips in OEM spec. Sorry mate, I am not a designer and have no access to it. Just only in the same position as you and can’t justify the horrible expensive stainless steel aftermarket air box when a proper reusable rubber seal for 10.-AUD could solve such problem. Cheers mate and safe travels
Thanks mate. Yeah, I agree. I couldn't imagine it would cost Toyota that much to create a solution to this, but I figure with the 300 series on the horizon, I don't believe that's going to happen now. All the best with your vehicle and thanks again.
Good video, but when you said you cant justify spending money on an after market air box ($1000.00) on an already expensive vehicle add another $29.000 dollars for a replacement engine if yours is dusted. The price for an after market box sure looks good....just saying.
From my knowledge, I believe the entire series is susceptible to this issue, however some owners claim that theirs have no issue. I can’t comment as I don’t n ow why history the vehicle has. Definitely worth a check over as a bare minimum though. Cheers, Nathan.
I tried a AAA air box, no improvement. I now run a unifilter and no dust! The dust gets pulled through the standard paper filter. I also run the same cyclonic pre filter.
Interesting to hear. Yeah, I think I’ll be sticking with the unifilter for the foreseeable future, seems to be the goods. The pre-filter is definitely a good thing in my opinion 👍
Its already being mentioned in the comments but I think the seal is only half the issue. Heat causing these flimsy plastic airboxes to warp (especially under heavy acceleration) is why your still getting dust even after improving the seal. Most people incuding myself are opting to use a uni-filter and they are extremely good with everyone getting similiar results, that being no dust. I also changed out the airbox as the cost of a new engine scares the hell out of me lol. Consider around a $1,000 for aibox & uni- filter or you can still run a genuine toyota filter. Compared this to 25 to 30k for a new engine?? I know it shouldn't be an issue but it clearly is for you and if you dont address it, it might cost you dearly. Still a great video mate and I enjoyed watching it. 👌👌
Thanks Brett! I completely agree, these air boxes need a complete overhaul by Toyota, but with the impending release of the new 300 series, this is unlikely to happen now... I understand where you are coming from, the thought of a new engine scares me, I guess I'm prioritising some other modifications and fixes, but I'm sure it will come sooner rather than later! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Nathan.
I have the same air box for 250k miles and my motor is running top notch. Strange. I change my filter every 40k km and mine doesn't burn any oil and it is running just fine. (edit) mine is petrol 4.7 v8 2uz-fe
Glad to hear that yours is working well. It would appear (from researching others experience) that this is a problem, primarily in the 4.5L diesel variant.
All that generation of 200s and 70s have the problem , you showed even with your mod there's dust , thats still dusting the motor any dust at all is bad dont kid yourself. Go spend 1500 on a decent air on and just solve the problem considering you probably spent 70k on truck .
Toyota are aware of this issue and quote that it is normal and safe for the engine. There are no fixes required if Toyota is consulted regarding this issue.
@@XploringOz to be honest I’m with Toyota on this one. The actually issue is 15 year old apprentices slapping in air filters incorrectly and us as owners suffering the consequences. Have you thought about using a large O-ring around the bottom of the filter next to the factory seal?
Theoretically this would would well, however the O-ring would have to be made for purpose and fit perfectly otherwise you would risk letting dust past.
Cheers, Nathan.
Absolute gold mate! Thank you.
Cheers mate 👍
Great mod, I just taped my vehicles airbox as per your tutorial. It will be interesting to see how it performs!
All the best, hope it improves the filtering performance for you too.
So far it seems to be working great, no visible dust in the air box after doing quite a few dusty roads up in the Kimberley over the last few weeks.
@@jorobson1 Awesome, thanks for the update. Glad to hear it's working well.
Did u have a problem to start with
@@blackpearlpastoral No but the vehicle had less than 9000km on it so prevention is better than cure.
Thanks
Nice clean engine bay.
Thanks mate, it gets a clean a couple of times a year 👍
Gday mate is there anything you can do to determine if a car has been dusted, I’m in the market to buy a second hand 200 and very wary of this problem and the potential cost to replace engine. Or are we just rolling the dice and hoping the car we buy doesn’t or hasn’t suffer from this problem thanks for any advice.
Nathan,
Would it be better to apply the seal on the top side of the air filter.
@@XploringOz I did both .....
Great info Nathan. I’ll definitely try your method. 👍👍
Thanks mate. All the best, hope you get some good results too!
Excellent work! Thanks for sharing them to our LC community!
Thanks mate!
Very informative and a great vid.
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks appreciate your knowledge I’ve watched a lot of your videos since getting my 200 series
Bloody rippa advice mate.
Definitely going to be doing this.👌
Cheers mate, all the best for your vehicle! Can't be too careful. Also, might be interested to check out my video on the Unifilter, to be honest this did seem to have a better result than these mods.
Cheers, Nathan.
@@XploringOz will do. Thanks

Hi mate, great vid where about sis the information on the rubber seal tape you used
Cheers mate. There’s a bit more information on the seal online. It’s the Moroday Multi-seal. I purchased it from Bunnings. Cheers, Nathan.
Great video thanks I'm searching for the Moroday Multi-seal tape. Bunnings appear not to stock it. Where did you find yours? Is there a similar product? cheers
All good found it at Bunnings
Thanks for video😀who details your 200?
All detailed myself, got a couple of videos actually about exactly how I do it.

Is this airbox shared with other Toyota products like the Tundra?
Hey mate, unfortunately I can't comment on this. I don't have any experience with the pickups and not sure what system they run. I can't say that I'm aware of the same parts running in other vehicles.
Cheers, Nathan.
I can confirm the new 300 series having the same issue 😂
Ahh man, not a good start 🤦♂️
What about custom made centrifugal pre intake?
Could work, potentially a little costly, but I guess it would depend on how you plan on using the vehicle. The Donaldson cyclonic pre-filter I'm using helps to seperate the larger dirt particles before entering the air box.
Thats what I did about a year ago. Great to ensure a tight seal Great Work
Thanks mate, so far it’s holding up ok. Here’s hoping for the future 🤞
My lx 570 has a second filter element above the main one.
That's a good idea. I'm guessing this is factory setup?
@@XploringOz looks factory. 2010 with 5.7 V8
Would a pod intake be better by any chance?
Personally I wouldn't just as there aren't many POD filters that could cope with the dust and dirt that we subject these vehicles too as 4WD'ers.
@@XploringOz clean it after a 4by 🤷♂️🤷♂️
@@lauchlanstill6677 Could be an option, haven't seen a lot of data of review on these styles of filters though...
Did an oil change on a friend's ex miner cruiser and the filter was full of dirt, Ugly it was
Yeah, sure is a good idea. Especially when using the vehicle under hard conditions like we do when 4WD’ing or going heavy loads. Cheers, Nathan.
You got a Donaldson yet Nathan? Just did 3 days in Big Desert and found a LOT of dust on the clean side of my airbox. Bugger!
Ahh, hope it hasn't caused to many issues 🤞
Yes, I have the Donaldson and have been very happy! Will have a follow up video coming in the future 👍
Is this an issue or as big an issue on the petrol v8?
It's hard to tell here in Australia. It's not something that is often reported, but there are so few petrol variants its hard to know whether it's not an issue, or just not common here...
Excellent. Thanks man.
Thanks mate, glad it could help.
You need a Donaldson XLC200K mate.
Have one now! 💪
I’ll check it out, thanks mate 👍
That's true. I might come around one day. For now, I'll do this and see what happens. Cheers for watching,
Do the early 200 series have same issue 0
Personally I’d go for a custom air box with the guarantee it will work better than killing ur engine ❤
Running the Donaldson Powercore XLC200K now. Much better than anything else on the market 💪
Thanks!
All that generation of 200s and 70s have the problem , you showed even with your mod there's dust , thats still dusting the motor any dust at all is bad dont kid yourself.
Go spend 1500 on a decent air on and just solve the problem considering you probably spent 70k on truck .
Explains why the 80 is the best off the crop
The 80 is definitely a beast, but both models and pro's and con's. Depends on what the driver is aiming to achieve.
Can't believe you have to find your own solutions, that's a joke! Love the 200 series had one for a brief period, kinda glad I didn't keep it.
Yeah, it's probably one of the more disappointing features on the 200 series, but each vehicle has their downside I guess.
If there’s a dusting issue why wouldn’t u take it back to Toyota?
Toyota are aware of this issue and quote that it is normal and safe for the engine. There are no fixes required if Toyota is consulted regarding this issue.
@@XploringOz to be honest I’m with Toyota on this one. The actually issue is 15 year old apprentices slapping in air filters incorrectly and us as owners suffering the consequences. If your mechanically minded enough to install a complete new air box for 1000s of dollars then I think you’re clever enough to check your filter has been inserted correctly.
@@blackpearlpastoral I know where your coming from, however I've run several tests with different filters and stock filters and I'm fairly confident that my filters were fitted correctly. Much like anything, these things are a matter of personal opinion and that's fine, I'm happy with some of the testing I'm completing at the moment.

Mate, the Air filter gets blocked and the plastic distorts under the vacuum and pulls air from around the sides. Why we making so many videos on this stuff.😂
What is amazing is how crappy toyota are at dealing with this issue.
It is a little disappointing to see this is still an issue, despite the amount of awareness around it...
