Ever since I saw this movie as a kid, I've always wanted to try this dish. Studio Ghibli always makes the food in their movies look amazing and this was no exception. Thanks for sharing.

Alvin continues to be one of my absolute favorite additions to the BCU. He's charming, funny, and his voice is excellent for cooking voice-overs. Plus, there are TONS of anime dishes to recreate, I can't wait to see more!!

I was searching for this comment. The first time I saw this film I was rather young, and this scene in particular along with the one where she saves Tombo at the end are the only two that stood out in my memory due to the strong emotional associations I had at the time of seeing them.

Canned herring? This is new! I usually use fresh herring. The city Kiki moves to is by the sea, so it's not unlikely the old lady would be able to buy some fresh. I layer it herring, bechemel sauce, baked and mashed kabocha and then puff pastry!

I'll admit some slight disappointment when he finished the fish decoration and he didn't say, "You sir, are are fish." But I suppose that's too much of a weird crossover to be expected.
As a Jew who’s Zaida (grandfather) once said that the most important part of a festival dinner was the herring (so many different types of pickled herring, Danish herring, chopped herring etc.) and the rest of ‘mains’ is just nice to have sometimes, I would be very happy to get this pie from my gran 😊
My man! I rarely hear anyone talk about that show! Back when I was in college I tried to make my own version of the Yakisoba pan, altering some instant ramen and using rolls I got for cheap to save money! lol

It's probably because of the video title length. "with Alvin Zhou" usually gets cropped out in the previews for me, especially on mobile.
