i’ve made this kind of strawberry and cream shortcake before and it was hands down one of the best cakes i’ve made and one of the best i’ve ever eaten, i made it for my family, which included my aunt who has been a professional pastry chef for over 20 years, and she said it was brilliant. The thing that really made it so light and fluffy was i separated the eggs at the start, whipping the eggs white to soft peaks, then gently folding in the remainder of the ingredients as per the recipe.
How does that cake rise without baking powder or not smell like eggs? I just made it and it was such a fail. Pls help
I watch a Korean baker who is constantly making a varient of this kind of cake, almost all of them including the soft whipped cream...or gellatin, lol. Sometimes both in the same cake, sometimes not. But they always look really soft, which I'd love to try.
@@Pavme i’ve also been baking for over 10 years, trust me i’ve made a lot of mistakes, but it’s all about trying again and following the recipe to a t
@@Pavme I use baking powder + use vanilla aroma (or vanilla sugar) to nullify the smell of eggs

Not just death note. like a million anime. Japan loves its strawberry cream cakes. Probably right up there with golden curry and rice balls when it comes to iconic foods seen in anime.

Well a lot of Japanese confectionaries are delicious so I can't really blame them. They have some of the best desserts I've seen and tasted, one of which is a crepe cake

When it cut to Kendall, she looked tired but also like her eyes were shining, so when she clapped, she looked like an extremely proud teacher applauding her student, lol. It was adorable.
Also, while perhaps easier, I would've loved for the potato chip to have been a video, especially using the English dub. I think that's my favorite moment in all of Death Note for just how aggressive Light was about it 😂

I do think it’s strange that most of their anime clips are in the Japanese sub when if an English dub is available, it’d be better and funnier for their primarily English audience. Their relevance and humor would hit more, just a thought
@@dear_totheheart My guess is because a lot of anime fans are subs over dubs people. I prefer dubs in most cases, so I also wish they'd use that instead, especially since the screen has to be made so tiny to avoid copyright, making it it hard to see the text.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley yeah exactly! Like I totally get the sub vs dub debate preference but the choice in this case and for this audience to me doesn’t seem the wisest or most accessible. Oh well, hope the makers see this and consider!
Alvin is really pumping out content like a madman and I like every single piece of it. It's also nice to see Kendall show up in a few more videos and I think they make a great team!

Alvin always does his best. He is so precise and patient and those two qualities are the key to a successful result. This is why his culinary works are always masterpieces!

Those Strawberries are from the company OishiI from just outside of NYC, I recognize them from the packaging. Much superior to the Driscoll strawberry, found in most stores, by being softer and much more flavorful. They are hoping to get them down to a $ per berry in a year or two when their larger production facility come online.
Missed opportunity, this could also double as a strawberry shortcake from Kirby since Kirby did turn 30 this year 😁

When i was a kid and school ended for the summer, we always had a picnic and my mom always made something similar to this. Just with normal sponge cake, and strawberry jam and vanilla pastry cream on the middle layers (always 3 tiered). So this cake means summer for me, even though it hailed outside while i was watching this lol.

You know a lot of L's weirder character traits are apparently based on the author Tsugumi Ohba. You can see the same thing in Professor Yoneda from Platinum End.
First off Alvin, I love how much your sense of humor is prevalent in your copy, and the light-hearted atmosphere you help foster on the channel as a whole. Seriously. Babby bringing you on was a godsend.

After the discussion of how expensive those strawberries were... yeah, I guess I can see why those kind of cakes are popular in anime. The things you take for granted for sometimes, right?
Fruit in general is really expensive in Japan because it's all imported but the quality of the fruit is always superb
Yeah fruit can be expensive in japan but bear in mind that there are tiers of fruit. The one Alvin has are usually reserved for gifts. Not to mention these were probably imported from Japan. Regular strawberries aren't going to be as expensive or else no one would be able to afford it.
It's not true that all of their fruit is imported, and the quality isn't always superb. If you're getting the expensive, gift tier fruits, sure. Japan's not some special perfect country. They do grow their own fruit. A lot of orchards and farms will sell the less than perfect fruit for much lower prices
A lot of fruit is grown here but there's another note to add why fruit is so expensive in Japan. Like the previous reply said, most fruit enjoyed in Japan was originally only accessible by import, it was considered something to gift rather than eat yourself.
The tradition still exists now but as more people are eating fruit themselves, the price still remained expensive.
Most fruit here isn't really worth the price, imo

I used to make this for my family growing up because my mom would make tres leches cake and it’s essentially the same just without the milk added to saturate the cake and make it wet. It’s been a long time since I made this. Guess I know what I’m making my mom for Mother’s Day
Japanese Strawberry Shortcake or Christmas Cake holds a very special place in my heart. It's the first kind of cake I made in college that set me on a path to being a baker and working with sweet things. I still have a picture of that first cake and it was lovely to see you make something similar, and using Rie's recipe too! I really like both of you and what you do so much. Thank you! 💛

Alvin is an absolute delight to listen to and watch! He has the kind of soothing voice and dry wit that got me to love Andrew, but with his own distinct flair and personality! So excited to go back and watch the older episodes and see the new ones come out!
i love this so much! i love it when bakers show mistakes it makes me feel normal because sometimes baking can be hard to get perfect and sometimes it takes more than one attempt. this really shows the beauty of baking :) I'm having a tea party with my friends soon I'm bringing this one for sure!

These cakes remind me of my dad! There was a bakery near the place he used to work at and every year on my birthday he would get me a strawberry cream cake. Today is his 68th birthday and this video just gave me the neat idea getting one for him! 🙂
If you want an icing that’s not too heavy, but still tastes like icing, mix together one part normal frosting (buttercream, cream cheese, etc) with one part whipped cream. It makes it lighter and less overpowering, while still maintaining a bit of the flavour of icing. And it’s surprisingly delicious with cream cheese icing

FYI, something about the colour correction in your videos looks a bit off. I think you should turn green down a little? You can see that the strawberrys and the cake doughs have a green-ish tinge in the shadow. For example at 9:46.

A lot of the recent videos have had a weird color correction I've noticed. In the Katsu video, the katsu looked too green.
Gotta admit, I've always enjoyed your silent videos with the cheeky subtitles. But your delivery is so much better, and makes it that much funnier!

instead of just putting in the butter and milk mixture, you need to fold in a little bit of the whipped egg mixture into it so it doesn’t deflate the rest of the batter. I hope this helps!

It is a really beautiful cake...but I'm pretty sure the only reason the Japanese get away with that kind of robbery for those strawberries is that obsession with perfection and symmetry...😬😬😬😬😬
Plus, that cake looks incredibly similar to Norwegian Sponge Cake, so pretty sure I would love it.

Honestly strawberry shortcake is a classic this was a long time coming with or without death note
I'm impressed by how much Alvin's opened up. When I saw his first episode on this channel, he came off as real dull, like he was trying to channel Babish's ASMR-quality voice but just appeared dull. By this video, he's found a voice that's more distinctly his own, and it improves the quality of the video greatly.
One of the only animes I fully watched. This brings back some memories
I am going to 100 percent use that trick of piping in-between the fruit from now on. I always have the hardest time frosting with whipped cream over fruit and that looks so much easier than haphazardly dolloping on cream and hoping for the best.
Alvin seems like he's getting comfortable and really hitting his stride.

I just tried to make this cake and it turned out like a hockey puck. I have no idea what I did wrong, followed the recipe exactly except for the dtand mixer part since I don't have one I just hand mixed. The cake didn't rise at all, I don't get how they're getting it to rise without baking powder
